Oilers Recall Potulny

Late tonight the Oilers called up Ryan Potulny. Potulny is the best forward on the Springfield Falcons and was an obvious callup in light of the Oilers current rash of injuries.

  1. PDO says:

Doesn’t he have to clear waivers?

  2. Lowetide says:

PDO: I don’t know. All I know is it hit the AHL Transactions log a little while ago.

  3. Jonathan says:

Waivers on the way back down, not the way up.

He’ll clear. Best forward on the Springfield Falcons doesn’t mean as much as you’d like to think,

  4. Lowetide says:

It’s something of a curious callup in that it likely means he’ll stay for the rest of the year (reading between the lines ala Jonathan’s info).

I suspect this is bad news for Brule in terms of NHL GP.

  5. Asiaoil says:

We’re saved! The ship is righted! Happy days are here again!

…or maybe we just have another AHL scrub that MacT can play on the top line and get killed.

…or another center Moreau can kick out of the circle when he feels like losing a d-zone draw

…or another soft offensive dwarf since Lowe seems to have some sort of fetish for these guys.

    Take you pick…

  6. Lowetide says:

This is a pretty good player by the numbers. He’s a shooter, having a good season, has some NHL experience (24 years old and 44 big league games played) and can play LW. This is a better callup than a few we’ve seen this season (specifically Sestito).

  7. Jonathan says:

It’s not a bad callup, considering the options, but Potulny’s a guy who could conceivably help the fourth line.

And that isn’t the problem right now.

Of course, I’m probably being overly pessimistic right now.

  8. Asiaoil says:

LT – yeah I know it’s not a bad call-up – but it’s hard not to be a cynic watching Rome burn while Lowe fiddles and MacT puts weiners on a stick.

  9. doritogrande says:

Lost in all this is the fact that Springfield now has nobody representing them at the AHL all-star game.

Kinda sad, but I’ve been pulling for this guy all season long. He lost his spot on the NHL roster in TC, but unlike other players has really earned an NHL job based on AHL performance.

  10. bookie says:

Everything sucks and I have given up, I probably will stop watching…

Historically this is a really good sign as when I reach the point of frustration where I give up on the Oilers completely, they tend to start playing pretty awesome!

  11. Cloned says:

The Oilers are apparently interested in Mike Fisher.

Source is the Ottawa Sun and TFP.

  12. Asiaoil says:

Not interested unless at least one of Moreau and Staios is going the other way – preferably both.

  13. B.C.B. says:

Having Potulny up and returning Brule to work on minor league pitching is a good thing. It stops us from using all of Brules last 9 games before waiver eligibility kicks in, and finds a shooter that can play in the bottom six (replace GenX) and sub in for Hemsky (while doing a terrible job, but who wouldn’t).

LT: I don’t know if this means he is here all year, but wouldn’t be surprised if he was (which means only having two goalies, hahaha, to fit him on the 23 man roster).

A trade for Fisher (for Moreau) would be good, but would still add about $2 million to the books (so about 1million since the season is half over) and would force another trade- for a draft pick- me thinks.

  14. amw says:

    From the Ottawa Sun today:

“…Edmonton would like to add a hard-nosed player, like Fisher.

Senators GM Bryan Murray, who was scheduled to return from scouting meetings in Fort Lauderdale, is willing to move anybody on a team sitting 29th in the league heading into yesterday, but Fisher has a no-movement clause until the end of the 2009-10 season.

Besides, Fisher is one of the pieces the Senators would like to keep in place”

Hard to tell from this if this is even a possibility — depends on what we’re offering them and whether he wants to leave Ottawa.

His stats this year are, uh, terrible. I was thinking, yeah maybe he’s only got 3 goals but maybe he’s a faceoff genius… nope, only 50%.

  15. Matt N says:

I was wondering why The Hockey Jesus didn’t get the call so I checked his stats since he last got demoted.

    Before call up

    GP/G/A/P/+-/shotspergame/PPG
    18/1/11/12/+2/1.5/.66

not bad, not great, got the call up where he played well the first two games, got 3 points and then was invisible for 2, got demoted.

    Since call up

    GP/G/A/P/+-/shotspergame/PPG
    12/2/3/5/-9/2.16/.41

All this against weaker AHL opponents according to Jonathon

    http://www.oilersnation.com/2008/12/springfield-falcons-quality-of-opposition/

I am pretty much done with this guy.

  16. Garnet says:

I think we’re with you on Schremp, Matt. It’s like there was only one dud London Knights prospect in the last eight years, and we managed to find him.

  17. Julian says:

Hey, we got Syvret too! He… oh.

  18. Matt N says:

While I am at it. A quick look at JDD during his conditioning stint.

    GP/WinLoss/GAA/SV%/Shotspergame
    5/1-4/2.73/.906/27.8

His last outing he got pulled after 2 periods after giving up 4 goals on 18 shots. The game before he lost a shut out bid in overtime, facing 30 shots.

His first 4 games seemed pretty solid, by the numbers anyway. Especially considering that the Falcons seem to be a really crappy team overall.

For the love of all that is holy if Mike Fisher is traded for, I’m sending the Oilers front office a flaming sack of human crap.

Potulny might give Mac the ability to move Nilsson up to where he belongs:

    Penner – Horcoff – Nilsson
    Potulny – Gagner – Cole
Moreau – Cogliano – Pouliot (*sigh*, poor, poor kids)
    Strudwick – Brodziak – Reddox

Please hurry back Hemmer and Fernie. Please.

  20. godot10 says:

Mike Fisher is a good hockey player trapped in a bad situation. One has to buy low, and sell high. One is never going to get a good player when he is looking good.

Apart from Alfredsson, who isn’t going anywhere, Fisher and Vermette are really the only forwards of interest in Ottawa.

I don’t think Heatley would fit into the Oilers system, just like Lupul didn’t. Heatley is a much better player than Lupul. The Oilers already have shooters for the powerplay in Souray and Visnovsky. Hemsky is the quarterback. Heatley doesn’t do puck retrieval in the corners.

Grebeshkov and Nilsson for Fisher makes a lot of sense.

And my feeling on Spezza are well known. The worst value for money in the NHL. Uber-soft and won’t pay the price in the hard areas.

  21. Scarlett says:

And now Nilsson is out for the game (suffered some setback at practice). Sheesh, this is going to be a fun game to be at. Damn season ticket.

And check TSN for some not nice words for Robbie. True, sure but everyone sucks right now. Not just him.

  22. Coach pb9617 says:

Mike Fisher is a good hockey player trapped in a bad situation.

With the worst contract in the league.

  23. godot10 says:

“Mike Fisher is a good hockey player trapped in a bad situation.”

//With the worst contract in the league.//

$4 million doesn’t buy much anymore in the NHL. Spezza’s contract is worse

Jordan Stall just got $4 million per year. If Jordan Stall is worth $4 million per year, Mike Fisher certainly is.

Any good young defensemen get $4 million per year.

Mike Fisher can play hard minutes, and has played his best in the playoffs.

Heatley doesn’t do puck retrieval in the corners.

    Uh, what?
