Blue Jackets at Oilers, G61/08-09

This is Geoff Sanderson as a Swift Current Bronco. He was an original Blue Jacket at the turn of the century and had a nice NHL career as a scorer. The Oilers could use a scorer but have been unable to add one in time for tonight’s game.

Tonight’s huge game.

The Blue Jackets and the Oilers are in a life and death struggle for the playoffs. A win tonight for the Oilers (in regulation) will put them safely inside the top 8 in the western conference, and a regulation loss means Saturday’s game against the Wild would be vital.

These games are huge because of the deadline, the closeness of the standings in the west and the jobs that are on the line in our town.

  1. Bruce says:

    Fire the powerplay coach.

  2. Phil says:

Man, is that an ugly PP. Way too much thinking.

  3. doritogrande says:

I just got though the cake v pie debate and feel the need to chime in here.

There is nothing, repeat nothing to take away from a properly prepared black forest torte. My late Baba used to make the best one on the planet. Her secret? Jello pudding in the icing.

  4. doritogrande says:

Do we have the worst percentage powerplay in the league yet?

  5. oilerdago says:

Columbus looks pretty good tonite. And our PP is pathetic.

  6. Scott says:

Ossi Vaananen was just waived… I think we should claim him.

I agree completely with this potential move.

Scott: 34′s back tonight and he was on some odd lines earlier this year but he was actually righting the ship chances-wise before he went down. I know you’ve kept some files so do you have a game-by-game look at how he was doing just before he was hurt?

In the eight games prior to injury he was 24/33 at EV. In the four games prior to injury he was 13/14. Not terrible in the last four, but not exactly stellar either. He should be outchancing against the secondary toughs as a 2.5M checker.

  7. doritogrande says:

    Ken Hitchcock’s been eating pie.

    and cake.

    and possibly whole pigs.

  8. doritogrande says:

Oh dear. What the hell just happened there?

  9. Matt N says:

Goaltending pretty great at both ends, especially considering only 12 shots total this period.

  10. oilerdago says:

At least Roli is on his game tonite. He’s going to have to continue to play huge if we’re going to get this one.

  11. Bank Shot says:

Oh dear. What the hell just happened there?

    Moreau’s fault.

  12. PunjabiOil says:

    Ken Hitchcock’s been eating pie.

    and cake.

    and possibly whole pigs.

Haha I noticed that too. He better watch his diet or there could be very grave consequences.

  13. Derek says:

That ugly sequence at the end of the period was all thanks to Steady Steve taking a golf swing at the puck around the boards on the clearing attempt with miles of real estate all around. Grebs needs to get back and push Staois back down the depth chart in the worst way.

  14. Lowetide says:

Based on that period, some Oilers don’t deserve their minutes. He’s proven a lot to any fan in the last two seasons, but that was not a good period by Stortini.

  15. doritogrande says:

Haha I noticed that too. He better watch his diet or there could be very grave consequences.

Are we talking about diabetes, needing to pay for a new wardrobe, or being thrown under the bus by MacT?

  16. pboy says:

    Ken Hitchcock’s been eating pie.

    and cake.

    and possibly whole pigs.

lol. I was just going to say that Hitch would have been able to make some good suggestions on here today.

Baba used to make some unreal cinnamon buns for Ukrainen Christmas. I’m pretty sure she was putting uncut heroin in the icing because it was impossible to have less than 4.

  17. Bruce says:

Fedor Tyutin logging 10:17 in the first. Is he the BJ’s new #1?

  18. Ichiro says:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/hockeynight/2009022606

The versus feed online is nice and big. and it’s working for me here in edm. no proxy!

  19. Bank Shot says:

Rolie was good, Gilbert pretty good, Smid good, Penner good.

Hemsky needs to pick it up 3 or 4 notches.

  20. B.C.B. says:

fuck, nothing is working, I’ll have to back to watching games in bars without sound (since it is not the leafs0 and trying to drink a half pint for the whole game. Have fun tonight, I am done with every stream not working

  21. markmac says:

http://channelsurfing.net/watch-yahoo-nhl-2.php?w=11920221 is working fine too (even on the wrong side of the Great Firewall of China).

But you do have to listen to the half-wit Columbus announcers complain about what a dirty player Sheldon Souray can be and what a misunderstood saint Jared Boll is.

Great save by Roloson at the end of the period. Crucial, even if the green light was already on.

  22. Phil says:

Woot – Boston handing Anaheim their ass on a platter.

  23. Icecastles says:

Matt N said… Souray is just plain mean. I love the way he protects the crease and makes people pay. Captain without the C.

Kind of like Luongo. Once you rip that fucking mask of his prima donna face. >:)

  24. Matt says:

    Staios’ Corsi# = -10 thru 1 period.

    That’s not easy.

  25. danny says:

So are Anaheim officially packing it in now?

Tonight the Oil look like a team that needs a few breaks to win. Rarely do they look like a team that are going to make their own breaks. Columbus play much the same way. MacT is pretty much the same as Hitch, so its not surprising.

  26. doritogrande says:

“Cole getting a shot on the top line with Penner and Horcoff”

Sorry, but a line without Ales Hemsky is not this team’s top line.

  27. Phil says:

Man. That is a light assed call.

  28. Bruce says:

Based on that period, some Oilers don’t deserve their minutes. He’s proven a lot to any fan in the last two seasons, but that was not a good period by Stortini.

Well he certainly didn’t deserve the two minutes Mr. Stripes gave him. The time given him by the coach would better be described as his “minute” (1:54, 1 hit, 1 GV).

I’ve heard of short leashes, LT, but that’s mighty harsh.

  29. Bruce says:

    Raffi, meet Sheldon.

  30. reijo29 says:

I know I said this in the 1st but CBJ sure is playing like they want this game a lot more then we do.

Is Struds really better then Smid on the PK? Or is this just Mac T being eccentric again?

  31. danny says:

wow that hook on wreckum wasn’t a call if he werent a rookie.

  32. oilerdago says:

Roli brought the cadavers, er, crowd to life with that swing.

    Clean single to center field.

  33. Coach pb9617 says:

Ice looks a little tilted this period.

Must be the old ice plant.

  34. Bruce says:

4 shots total by the forwards nearing the midway point.

  35. Phil says:

You know, every time Roli does that little bat thing, I can’t help but think that, sooner or later, either he’s going to whiff, or get stick checked, and it’s going to turn into a gift for the other team.

    “Dustin Penner on his horse…”

Many jokes to be made out of that one!

  36. MJT says:

Gagner has turned the puck over a few too many times tonight. Might be a good time to give some of those minutes to Brodziak and Cogliano.

  37. Matt N says:

Nice shift by Reddox. Forecheck, turnover and another hit and chip in.

  38. mc79hockey says:

Nice shift for the third pairing there. Sweet jesus.

  39. oilerdago says:

That was a great play by Struds on the 2 on 1, blocked the pass and prevented a sure goal.

    I like his game.

  40. Bruce says:

How did Hitchcock let his fourth line get caught out there against out first line? Terrible match-up. Except they fucking owned our big guns.

  41. doritogrande says:

    “Dustin Penner on his horse…”

Many jokes to be made out of that one!

I’ll get the ball rolling. That’s got to be a fucking Clydesdale!

  42. Coach pb9617 says:

If Penner wasn’t so fat, I’d almost think that he came to play this eve.

  43. striatic says:

Phil, hopefully he practices what to do if he whiffs it.

he only does it when he has enough room to swing the stick, and i imagine if he has that much room, he probably also has some space to recover if he misses, provided he knows what to do.

  44. oilerdago says:

I’m just stunned by how flat the Oilers have played as a whole tonite. You wouldn’t know this was a critical game the way they’ve played so far.

  45. PunjabiOil says:

Getting owned in our own crib.

    Sad, actually.

  46. doritogrande says:

How was that not interference on 26 in the paint?

  47. MJT says:

Hey so if Roli doesn’t get a rest on the second half of a back to back against the best team in the west and he doesn’t get a rest against one of the bottom teams in the east, then when exactly is MacT going to give him a night off?

Good sequence for the second unit there…

  48. Bruce says:

Great work by Penner at the end of a long shift. About time the puck went down to that end.

  49. PunjabiOil says:

Hey so if Roli doesn’t get a rest on the second half of a back to back against the best team in the west and he doesn’t get a rest against one of the bottom teams in the east, then when exactly is MacT going to give him a night off?

What’s the evidence that he needs a rest?

The Oilers have only 2 more back to backs remaining – one of them is a home and home against the Flames.

Roloson has been apparently taking practices off to keep fresh.

    It’s working.

  50. Lowetide says:

It’s another one of those games where any fool can see who is going to score next.

  51. Matt N says:

How can anyone with a bit of hockey sense watch this team and think it has a chance to do something in the playoffs? Please, please, in the name of Stan Weir, Howie Meeker and cherry pie, don’t trade prospects, picks and players for rentals in some kind of misguided push for the playoffs.

  52. Black Dog says:

What is it Dennis said? Since Lubo went down the Oilers have outchanced the opp. once or twice in total. Something like that.

The little guy drives this team. And of course Grebs going down didn’t help.

  53. mc79hockey says:

You think so LT? I’m reminded of when the Oilers had a team like this, say between 01 and 04, they’d outshoot the opposition by a lot and then the opposition would pop one and everyone would bitch about how they can’t finish.

  54. oilerdago says:

//It’s another one of those games where any fool can see who is going to score next.//

LT: you’re right. I’m just hoping that this is going to be like the San Jose game where we steal a win.

That’s the only way it happens tonite.

Crowd should boo the crap out of them at the end of this period.

  55. Bruce says:

    Fuck this is brutal.

  56. Bank Shot says:

You think so LT? I’m reminded of when the Oilers had a team like this, say between 01 and 04, they’d outshoot the opposition by a lot and then the opposition would pop one and everyone would bitch about how they can’t finish.

Yah, now the Oilers just get badly outplayed and still can’t finish.

  57. Matt N says:

This is Columbus BTW. If Chicago or Detroit was in town this would be one of those blow out 9-2 nights.

  58. Lowetide says:

    Shawn. Fucking. Horcoff!

  59. Bruce says:

Paging Mr. Hemsky. White courtesy telephone please.

  60. doritogrande says:

    To Shawn Horcoff:

    Bless you.

    Sincerely, All of us.

  61. oilerdago says:

    Horcoff saves them right there.

  62. PunjabiOil says:

St. Louis winning 2-1 with ~13 minutes left in the 3rd.

  63. oilerdago says:

    Bruce that was great! LOL.

  64. Black Dog says:

Is that BJ’s defenceman who stopped Hemsky named Dan Hejda?

Wasn’t he the Dad in the Wonder Years?

Anyways he’d look pretty good in an Oiler’s uniform. Probably never play in Edmonton though.

Moreau must lead the league in edgy penalties taken 200 ft from his own net.

  65. mc79hockey says:

Not to defend that period in any way shape or form, but Columbus is a pretty good ES team. Nice to see Moreau take that o-zone penalty though.

Also did anyone else just see that ad for farmersonly.com, a dating site for farmers? Holy shit.

  66. Phil says:

If Columbus somehow doesn’t win this game, I will sincerely feel bad for them. They’re playing the way I’ve been wishing my team would play all year. LT – any chance you could reinstate your threat from the ASB?

HEY!!! They’re replaying Tiger from today over on the Golf Channel. Peace, I’m out.

  67. Bank Shot says:

Moreau must have threatened to beat the shit out of Sam Gagner if he touched the puck tonight.

    Damn you Moreau!!!!!!!!

  68. PunjabiOil says:

Wasn’t he the Dad in the Wonder Years?

That would Dan Lauria – who played the character of Jack Arnold.

That was one hell of a show. These days, all you see is garbage that is reality tv.

  69. Black Dog says:

Grabia’s been pimping that site for years Ty, that’s quality shit.

Sometimes I wonder what the Oilers would look like with Hitch behind the bench.

Or Andy Murray. Don’t look now but the Blues are coming hard.

  70. mc79hockey says:

OK – that farmersonly.com is apparently real and the top of the page has a picture of a horse with a speech bubble in which he welcomes you. I’m thinking advertising time on the CBJ broadcast is dirtcheap.

  71. Bruce says:

Shots 24-11 CBJ. Attempted shots 45-20 CBJ. Giveaways 16-4 EDM. This is freaking hard to watch, and hard to take.

  72. Matt says:

Also did anyone else just see that ad for farmersonly.com, a dating site for farmers?

You’re a damn liar, that can’t possibly exist. Liar.

Staios up to -16 Corsi now.

Also, I don’t *ever* recall seeing a hockey game where one team had a Grade A scoring chance in the final second of consecutive periods.

  73. Lowetide says:

    Does the horse resemble Penner?

  74. Black Dog says:

Wasn’t he the guy on the Remington Steel show then?

Or was he Uncle Jesse on The A Team?

  75. mc79hockey says:

Huh. Everyone on that site seems to have the last name of Sutter.

  76. NBOilerFan says:

My god… I just caught the last 3 minutes of that period… I sure hope that is not how teh Oilers have played all game. They look like this is their third game… in only TWO nights.

The looke to be coasting…. no “jam” whatsoever.

I also skimmed through a few of the previous comments…. and LT, if Frolov is available…. Friggin’ Lowe/Tambs better be making a friggin’ sweet offer. That is the 1st line LW we neeed for Hemsky.

  77. Black Dog says:

LT – Penner and the horse were in a hot dog eating contest.

Penner won going away. He even beat the little skinny Japanese guy.

  78. Lowetide says:

“Hi, I’m Frank. I don’t get to town much and since the wife died the place doesn’t look like much. However, I do have a combine that’s worth a town and I own it. Plus, I gave up snuff Tuesday. Call me.”

  79. Black Dog says:

The Leafs called up some guy named Tim Stapleton and Wilson gave him a whirl in the shootout, third shooter to win, and he scores!

    Fun stuff.

  80. Bank Shot says:

    I’m looking for:

    Men Women Goats

  81. Lowetide says:

    That’s Pat’s site.

  82. Black Dog says:

    Its Men Chickens Goats LT.

    Thank you very much.

  83. Phil says:

    Does the horse resemble Penner?

    Clearly separated at birth.

  84. Dennis says:

    Chances after 40: 9-19.

27 has four of our nine chances.

For a team with at least a few vets, this team has many less ounces of composure than it takes to make a pound.

    Seriously.

I can’t understand how this team could play like this given the circumstances.

I used to think it was Pouliot’s fault.

  85. Lowetide says:

Pouliot’s in the building and that may be buggering Ethan’s compass.

  86. danny says:

having lead feet works out great for Nascar teams.

    NHL teams not so much.

  87. Bruce says:

My better half observes: “I keep wondering if Hemsky’s injured. He’s sure not playing with much confidence.”

  88. Lowetide says:

    Sheldon!

  89. oilerdago says:

That’s what I’m talking about Souray!

  90. Phil says:

I can’t understand how this team could play like this given the circumstances.

They play like this regardless of the circumstances. This year anyway. Death. Taxes. Uninspired Oilers Hockey.

  91. oilerdago says:

Even Rod thought that shot by Nash was in.

  92. danny says:

I feel very douche in saying this, but I honestly don’t remember the oilers being so consistently laid back as they have been this season.

I could use ‘jam’ here and regret it, but it does sum things up.

They don’t have any urgency, ever. Except for maybe 2 games ive watched this season. Thats about it. One vs Calgary and one vs the Nucks.

    *shrug*

  93. Bruce says:

If they counted puck battles as a stat, CBJ would have a 2:1 edge in this game, easy.

  94. Lowetide says:

    We’re Oakland.

  95. Bank Shot says:

Why is Peckham playing so much? Did Smid get injured?

  96. Bruce says:

Hemsky’s first attempted shot of this entire sorry affair, 46 minutes in.

  97. danny says:

    We’re Oatmeal.

  98. Black Dog says:

The problem is that this game is so important because of all of the games that they have played poorly in this year.

They are young and the roster is unbalanced but this team has given away plenty of points this year.

  99. Phil says:

Maybe they’ll start wearing white skates? Would be fitting.

  100. Kent W. says:

If they counted puck battles as a stat, CBJ would have a 2:1 edge in this game, easy.

I thought about the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Would that even be possible you think?

  101. Bruce says:

    We’re Oakland.

Instead of Billy Beane running the show, we got Mr. Bean.

  102. doritogrande says:

    Fuck you Raffi Torres.

  103. Phil says:

    Fitting.

  104. Lowetide says:

That was some good coverage there.

  105. Bob Arctor says:

    Raffi!!!

  106. reijo29 says:

Nash playing like a Super Star/Franchise Player, Hemmer not so much.

Had a feeling the red headed albino would score tonight.

  107. PunjabiOil says:

Blatent obstruction interfernce on Nilsson not called

  108. oilerdago says:

Oilers absolutely deserved that for the way they’ve played tonite.

  109. danny says:

We dont make our own breaks. But man we dont catch any with the refs lately.

How was that not a holding call against Nilsson?

  110. striatic says:

that was about the least surprising thing that could have happened.

  111. Scott says:

Given how this game has gone, that could be it. Feel pretty bad for Roloson here because he’s been very good tonight. Hemsky?

  112. reijo29 says:

Hopefully Robert Nilsson never has to play D again, wow was that terrible.

    Man we suck ass tonight.

  113. Black Dog says:

I’m with Mrs. Bruce. Hemsky has been invisible the last couple of weeks.

    Something has to be up.

  114. danny says:

    This is disgusting.

I feel like my dog left me for my neighbor.

  115. PunjabiOil says:

    Dumb Fuck Moreau

  116. doritogrande says:

Why did I hear “Penalty coming up” from the attacking zone, and immediately think “Fucking Moreau”

  117. Phil says:

There’s the Moreau we all love and value.

  118. oilerdago says:

Way to go Moreau. What a leader. What a player.

  119. Bruce says:

Good aggressive penalty by Your Captain there. Just what we fucking needed.

  120. Lowetide says:

Even after the Raffi goal this team doesn’t have another gear.

  121. reijo29 says:

Any idea why Hemmer & Horc were playing w/ Nilsson that shift?
Thought Penner accounted for 1/2 of our scoring chances in the first 2 periods. Mac T sure doesn't have a clue.

  122. Bruce says:

Not only was he 200 feet from our net YET AGAIN, he was 50 feet from the goddam puck.

  123. Lowetide says:

They seem to be spotting Pisani to my eye, which has given a few guys extra shifts. Hemsky has been gassed for most of the game from what I can tell, either that or he’s hurt.

Having said that, he seems to be skating okay.

  124. Coach pb9617 says:

Brodziak should be the #2 center

  125. Icecastles says:

On the night Gretzky retired, they put a big 99 on the ice behind the net: his “office”.

On the night Moreau retires, they should put a bit 18 in the penalty box.

  126. doritogrande says:

Roloson deserves better than 2-on-0′s tonight. Jesus.

  127. Icecastles says:

Coach pb9617 said… Brodziak should be the #2 center

But is he a legitimate 2nd line centre?

  128. Bruce says:

That’s a Four Million Dollar HUA there. A 4-on-2 rush shorthanded is not the time to drop the puck behind the last guy. Especiallyu when the last guy is Steve Staios. The risk/reward ratio must be nearing infinity.

  129. Icecastles says:

Lowetide said… Even after the Raffi goal this team doesn’t have another gear.

They mostly kind of shift between neutral and reverse…

  130. Bank Shot says:

Brodziak should be the #2 center

Are you insane? Gagner will touch the puck any time now, and then Columbus will be in trouble.

  131. Black Dog says:

Roli’s going to make Lowe’s decision easy and request a trade.

OK, I’ve coached hockey and I had my share of guys who liked to take dumb/selfish penalties.

Easiest thing in the world to cure. Bench them.

Moreau is an ass but he has been doing this forever and his coach has let it happen.

Horc used to take a lot of dummy penalties and then he figured it out.

Moreau either can’t figure it out or his coach is ok with it.

Instead of fixing the problem he blathers about how he plays with an edge.

  132. striatic says:

Roloson could be the first star in a loss tonight.

if they lose here, and against the wild, i wonder if the Oilers move Roloson. he could help a lot of teams in the playoffs and we might be able to get some significant talent in return.

  133. NBOilerFan says:

With such an important game… and this is the effort we get… then we NEED to be sellers. This team won’t make teh playoffs and if they do, won’t play more than 4 games.

    We need to keep rebuilding.

  134. Lowetide says:

If they lose tonight, then Saturday is a must win. Absolute must.

Should they lose both games, there are a few guys headed out of town imo (Cole, Roloson, possibly Staios).

  135. Scott says:

I’m with Mrs. Bruce. Hemsky has been invisible the last couple of weeks.

    Something has to be up.

I vaguely remember this injury he had earlier this year that sometimes has lasting effects… a concu…

    bine?

  136. Bruce says:

Hemsky with another chance and does nothing until it’s too late. Again.

  137. Phil says:

Well, things could be worse, fellas. You could’ve been one of the unfortunate bastards that paid hard-earned money to sit in a seat and watch this running joke. I can’t imagine how pissed off I’d be.

  138. Lowetide says:

    Nilsson skating miles tonight. Miles.

  139. danny says:

One of the things that bothered me through the season is after a listless loss or a shallacking, teh comments are always the same.

    ” we played well”
” we didnt catch the breaks”
” we are going to put that one behind us “

etc.. its a common thing. You wonder if its by design, to keep the press comments neutral. But then you see Iginla after a Calgary loss, and hes almost ashamed, and you feel it from him.

Then you see the team play like Quaker Oatmeal night in night out, same comments served rinsed and repeated.

Its rough as a fan that doesnt feel about the Oilers, the way they aparantly feel about being an Oiler.

  140. Icecastles says:

Teams should be allowed to ‘trade’ coaches. We could trade Moreau for some extra pucks. And MacT for the bucket to carry them. Then he could continue to metaphorically carry his star captain.

  141. oilerdago says:

Moreau can’t even handle a pass on a simple break out.

    The word is brutal.

  142. bookie says:

I am sooo tired of this. I dont care what the problem is just start fixing – fire the coach, if that doesnt work trade the team for some AHL team and start over.

  143. Scott says:

if they lose here, and against the wild, i wonder if the Oilers move Roloson. he could help a lot of teams in the playoffs and we might be able to get some significant talent in return.

I guess it depends on your definition of significant but Huet netted a 2nd round pick last year.

This team won’t make the playoffs and if they do, won’t play more than 4 games.

I’ll take the second half of that bet. No matter who they play I’d give them at least a 75% chance to win a game.

  144. bookie says:

I don’t even want them to score cause I think it would be a travesty of justice.

  145. Bruce says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  146. doritogrande says:

we need a goal, and Pisani and Moreau are on the ice?

    Fire the coach.

  147. reijo29 says:

    Awful. Fucking awful.

Can’t wait to hear the Captain’s fucking bull shit excuses.

If we lose Saturday we better become sellers.

  148. Lowetide says:

That was poor even for this team. Very poor club.

  149. oilerdago says:

Yeah, Moreau is so good he’s out for the finish too.

    BRUTAL.

  150. Dennis says:

I will have this up shortly but the Oil were outchanced 13-23 at evens.

    So that was good.

  151. Phil says:

Touch ‘em all, Mason. You’ll never hit an easier one :)

  152. Bruce says:

    Watch Gilbert on this replay.

  153. Scott says:

Roloson played really well tonight. Good for him. He’s had a great bounce-back season.

  154. bookie says:

Every year, I spend a certain ammount of time disappointed with the team, but this year it just seems as though I feel absolutly hopeless about 1/3 of the time. What the f was that game? How?

I suppose they will go the trade route first, but there are a lot of character guys on this team (seriously), but you cant find them anymore. Erik Cole was a heart and soul guy in Carolina, Hemsky used to be the doesnt quit kid, we all were supportive of Moreau of the day being captin due to his work ethic – did someone put downers in the gatoraid? Was Jason Smith, Stoll, Smyth and the rest the real heart of the team?

Man, I would trade the whole team for a square of that crappy McCain cake that you get at the IGA!

  155. striatic says:

“Was Jason Smith, Stoll, Smyth and the rest the real heart of the team?”

    yes.

  156. PunjabiOil says:

Great. Now Nashville joins us (1 point back) in the mix. Hell St. Louis is now only 3 back.

  157. reijo29 says:

How does Penner get benched at the end of the game again?

Mac T's justification is likely to be

"Cole has played really well on the left side with Horc & Hemmer"

"Ethan is our Captain and I thought that if anyone could make something happen it would be him"

"The kids are really clicking together this season"

"Fernando was hurt for the last 43 games. Really? Are you sure about that? Really?"

  158. bookie says:

If we lose Saturday we better become sellers.

Maybe in your mind, but look at the position of MacT and Lowe. No way they are giving up the playoffs when they are 3 points out. They just about hung their careers here on making the playoffs this season and will do whatever they can to do so (other than a total sacrifice), but they wont sell players like Roli for youth and drafts. There is no way. Maybe they should, but they wont.

To be honest, at 3 points out, I dont think they should.

  159. Scott says:

On the bright side both Anaheim and Dallas lost their must-win games too.

MUST-WIN! on Saturday. Loser plays 20 meaningless games!

  160. Bruce says:

    Shots: 32-19 CBJ
    Attempted shots: 64-32 CBJ
    Scoring chances: 23-13 CBJ
    Faceoffs: 29-17 CBJ
    Takeaways: 9-6 CBJ
    Giveaways: 26-10 EDM

The 1-0 final is more indicative as a ratio than a margin.

Another teams saunters into our building and struts away with two easy points. A fucking terrible performance by the home side in a Huge game. There is no excuse for it.

  161. eidy says:

so they pull the goalie and who goes out to try to score the tying goal….. cap’n anvil. no hemsky, no horcoff, no cole…… death wears a “c”

  162. pboy says:

Disagree. We aren’t going to do much, if anything at all if we even make the playoffs. Why not try and create a little cap space and add some picks for the draft? Is there anyone out there who thinks we could win more than one game at best against either San Jose or Detroit in the first round?

  163. Icecastles says:

Sportsnet just showed the goalie stats. Apparently Steve Mason faced 19 shots, made 5 saves, and allowed no goals. Roli faced 31 shots, made 31 saves and allowed 1 goal.

    holy fucking christ, guys!

  164. godot10 says:

//Great. Now Nashville joins us (1 point back) in the mix. Hell St. Louis is now only 3 back.//

When you lose, the more teams in the hunt the better. Nashville and St. Louis undoubtedly still have games with Columbus. We want them to still be in it.

Anaheim and Dallas lost, Nashville and St. Louis won. Those were the best possible results for the Oilers.

Too bad the Oilers couldn’t take care of their own business.

  165. Black Dog says:

Very disappointing. Especially with the lead up, got some excellent ideas for our next dinner party.

Very surprised that nobody mentioned apple crisp.

    Quality quality old time dessert.

Folks talk about moving a Dman this summer and that Lubo fits the bill but since Lubo went down this team has been pretty bad.

Likely Hemsky is hurt, except for that stretch immediately after he returned he has played poorly.

The thing that is tough to take, and everyone has commented on it, is that this club has played with little passion.

This is supposed to be a rebuilding program and yet most of the kids are running in place or falling off.

A lot of guys I really respect, notably Ty, have said that a coaching change wouldn’t make a difference.

I have to disagree. This was an important game and while the BJs are a quality club the fact is the Oilers did absolutely nothing. Without Roli and some breaks its a blowout.

And we’ve seen a pile of these this year.

  166. reijo29 says:

bookie – Did you watch the game tonight?

I am fine with your reasoning for why Mac T & Lowe won't want to sell but after watching tonight's game (a must win if I've ever seen or heard of one) I don't know how a knowledgeable Oilers fan (like yourself) can possibly think the Oil shouldn't be selling next Thursday.

I will never get the last 3 hours of my life back. Fuck.

Hell of a goal by Torres.

  167. Bruce says:

If Mason made 5 saves, I don’t remember them.

  168. oilerdago says:

Scott there is no bright side tonite. This is a glass half empty situation as Nashville pulls to within a point, St. Louis to within 3.

When it counts, they don’t show up. Call it a choke (hello captain), call it a lack of heart.

This team is not going anywhere.

  169. Scott says:

Is there anyone out there who thinks we could win more than one game at best against either San Jose or Detroit in the first round?

If you give the Oilers a 20% chance at winning a road game and 40% chance of winning a home game they win two games in the series 43% of the time and the series 11% of the time. It’s not great, but it is a chance. Frankly, going down in six to the Sharks in round one is probably more valuable to this team then an extra second round pick for trading Roloson.

  170. Coach pb9617 says:

How does Penner get benched at the end of the game again?

    He’s fat.

Anyone else think the coach lost a chick to a fat dude in high school?

  171. danny says:

You know I’d probably bet that EDM makes the playoffs even after losing tonight and Saturday night, had they given some effort and lost the game in an honest fashion.

I think whats paramount on saturday night, regardless of a W or L, because with 20 games left its not truely must-win…. the paramount thing is that this team exhibits some semblance of a pulse.

I can get behind them, if theyre out there looking like they want to win. I’ll believe until the math tells me to fk off.

but this team i dunno, its hard to think they even care sometimes.

so which line deserves the beauty nickname ‘flatline’ most?

  172. Phil says:

They just about hung their careers here on making the playoffs this season and will do whatever they can to do so (other than a total sacrifice), but they wont sell players like Roli for youth and drafts. There is no way. Maybe they should, but they wont.

Taken, word for word, directly from the Toronto Maple Leaf Expansion Era Strategy book.

Jesus, watch those Boston – Ducks highlights. I’d trade Hemsky for Lucic straight up right now.

  173. Black Dog says:

reijo – I’ll give you a few reasons

A new owner just spent over 50 million bucks and his management team had better make sure he gets at least one playoff round out of it.

The coach’s job is on the line.

Even with their recent slide a win tonight would have put them into sixth place.

  174. dubya says:

Gagner, Moreau, and Pisani with the goalie pulled. It appears the Moreau was the guy who came on for Roloson.

And frankly, only one of those teams looked like it had a full time, professional hockey coach.

  175. Lowetide says:

I think we’ll know Saturday night. They win Saturday and all is not lost.

  176. relic says:

I put at least part of this lethargic effort on the strategy the coach employed tonight and how much the team bought into it. To my eye there was some compete in the 1st but the oilers were beaten into submission in the second. No answer for the CBJ forecheck, tenacious when the puck was available and disciplined when the oilers were breaking out. Eventually the D start trying to carry the puck deep, force it too much, one gets caught and raffi uses the most hated move (from the perspective of a goalie). As much as anything they were out coached tonight.

  177. Icecastles says:

Interviewer: Do you think the team was lacking in intensity?

Moreau: “it appears that way, but blah blah blah.”

But nothing. They didn’t score one fucking goal. Roli faced 31 shots. The proof is in the pudding and there is not one single metric where you could demonstrate any kind of “intensity” shown by this team tonight.

  178. Dennis says:

Here’s the way I saw it.

    http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=3080

  179. oilerdago says:

I don’t know that I put this one on the coach. This team failed to execute.

The coach doesn’t go out and skate. When the Columbus players keep getting free in the slot for good shots, you know the players are not into the game.

Just no effort tonite from the ones who mattered the most.

  180. Woodguy says:

    Disgusting.

Haven’t read the thread yet, but I imagine my comments aren’t unique.

    Out played
    Out hustled
    Out coached

Hitch had the perfect recipe against the Oilers, and MacTavish’s only response was to turn the blender on again.

My mom was over to watch the game and see her granddaughter. Mom likes “steady Steve” and didn’t know why I kept bitching at the TV when he had to puck.

I got a pen and paper and said for the next 25 times Staios touches the puck in his own end, lets see what happens.

The results were 6 turnovers, 9 dump outs, 3 icings, 3 bad passes to teammates that resulted in sustained pressure, 4 passes that resulted in the puck being moved out of the zone.

Steady Steve. Steadily sinking and bringing whoever is on the ice with him.

No one on the Oilers looked interested in winning this one.

Can’t blame them though, its not as if this game meant anything in the standings.

I hope they miss the playoffs and it brings some coaching changes….real coaching changes, not Buchburger.

It just gets really tiring watching the same thing over and over and over and over and over.

  181. Black Dog says:

Thing is LT, Scott is right too.

    Grebs will be back.

Bring in a shooter and a Dman. Which they will.

Whether they lose Saturday or not they will buy and they will try and make the playoffs.

They’ll get waxed if they make it and probably its best to change coaches regardless I would say.

Have been a MacT guy and I think he’s a good coach but there are plenty of coaches who have won Stanley Cups or gone to the Finals who have been let go.

He’s past due. Its getting stale. The kids have taken a step back. Other then Hemsky and the top four D who has had a better year this year then last? Who has taken a step forward?

    46? Maybe.

    Time to make a change.

  182. bookie says:

I am fine with your reasoning for why Mac T & Lowe won't want to sell but after watching tonight's game (a must win if I've ever seen or heard of one) I don't know how a knowledgeable Oilers fan (like yourself) can possibly think the Oil shouldn't be selling next Thursday.

I just don’t think that ‘selling’ gains you that much in the long run. I think that 3 points out of a playoff spot is not that much and I have watched enough hockey to know that boarderline teams like this tend to sometimes string together a good stretch of games.

Sometimes I think we all get a little emotional after a stupid effort like this (and there have been lots of them this season), but the team is middle of the pack in a 30 team league. The goalie is looking good and if they put together 3-4 wins, we are all happy again (as they have done many times this season).

Also, I think the benefit for this team of playing even one round of the playoffs is huge. Experience and teambuilding are well worth it.

If we could cut the team up and get a couple of good first round draft picks, then I agree – sell. But that never happens. When you sell the team though, you do end up with the rest of the team feeling that you gave up. Teams that give up like that take a few years to rebuild the attitude.

So, I guess I just don’t think the season is as bad as this game was (or as good as the Montreal game was).

Do I think they should be doing better, absolutely! Would I mind a trade or a coaching change…I think those are good options. I am just not convinced that selling and giving up is the answer. Though it is a reasonable option.

  183. Black Dog says:

oilerdago – well that’s the old argument, right. These guys are professionals and should play hard every night etc etc.

I would be interested to see how many games Columbus has mailed in this year. Or St. Louis.

I live in Toronto. They’re awful but they play hard almost every night.

The last ten games Ian White has played 24 minutes plus on the blueline in every game.

Their #1 centre is probably Dominic Moore. Or maybe Matt Stajan. Moore is probably their best player.

Missing three of their top four D tonight, two of those have been out longterm.

And they have a winning record these last ten games.

  184. Lowetide says:

I’ve felt they were going to buy for sure but now I’m not so certain. if they lose on Saturday I think this organization may decide this team is too small, doesn’t win the battles and the two things they’ve held on to (kids are developing, skill over size) aren’t worth pursuing any longer.

Which means a rebuild and more mountain men.

And of course three more years.

  185. relic says:

    @od

not making excuses for anyone, I mean you’ve got to find a way on the ice… but CBJ read the oilers like a book. 8 men in the box when edmonton tried to run and when they passed it was always into double coverage. has to be demoralizing. obviously though you lose as a team and this team was a bunch of losers tonight.

  186. Black Dog says:

Oops – have had a couple of beers and a Scotch. And plenty of pie.

    I’m sluggish.

My point is that I think that coaching has something to do with it. And I’m a fan of the coach.

And bookie’s point is right on the money.

    Good night all.

    Men Chicken Goats.

    Words to live by.

  187. bookie says:

Not trying to be silly here, but I think the coach has lost the room!

There are two ways this can happen. The team ‘turns’ on the coach and give up (I don’t think its this one).

The coach and players grow apart in their communications and understanding of one another. The players listen to the coach, but cant comprehend what he is saying (almost as though he is speaking Greek). This happens when the coach becomes mired in multiple layers of strategy (layers of overplanning and overthinking). Things like the PK get so complex that they no longer make common sense and thus it becomes impossible to execute (ala Oilers).

    OR

They simply are missing a sense of humour in the room from someone like Reasoner. A simple key cog that is a hidden functional aspect of all successful teams. The guy who can make you laugh when things are good and/or bad…

    Something…

  188. Traktor says:

Media guy: “You’re team is losing battles and it’s only going to get harder down the stretch – how do you fix that?”

MacTavish: “I’m going to give credit to Columbus.”

    Pathetic.

  189. Traktor says:

    *Your

  190. Bruce says:

Penner (Corsi +3) was nailed to the bench for the last 5:40. Meanwhile Ethan Moreau (Corsi -13) was given two shifts in the last two and a half minutes. Pisani (Corsi -9) and his rust played 1:42 of the last 2:44.

What the fuck kind of bullshit coaching is that? I’m sorry, but that is just brain dead. Penner was our best forward tonight; Oilers outshot CBJ 9-6 at evens with Dustin on the ice. Meanwhile, Oilers were outshot 8-0 with Fernando on the ice tonight, and 12-2 with Moreau out there, so whatever MacT’s hunch was, it couldn’t possibly have been based on actual, you know, results.

  191. oilerdago says:

Interesting comments from the coach. Gilbert’s frustrated with the game from the forwards and tries to make something happen.

Gagner makes a bad mistake on the goal.

You’re right relic, CBJ played great and the Oilers did not match them. Plain and simple.

If anything, I’m guessing that MacT was desperately looking for something tonite because too many guys on the bench were spectators.

And that’s a sad commentary on the team.

  192. St George says:

Which means a rebuild and more mountain men.

And of course three more years.

I could get behind that if the rebuilding team tried hard and was fun to watch. Much better than watching this.

  193. Traktor says:

“Pisani (Corsi -9) and his rust played 1:42 of the last 2:44″

Unreal. And I’m a huge Pisani fan.

  194. bookie says:

One more though (seriously, you can ignore me now, this is really just therapy for me to rant after a game like this).

Maybe KLowe and Tambi are pretty smart hockey guys. Maybe KLowe, Tambi, and even MacT know exactly what is wrong with this team. Maybe they are working the phones doing their best to get what they need and dump any ‘cancers’ in the room.

I only say this because while I like to think I could do better than any of them, I also like to think that I could win a battle in the corner in the NHL, it is probably all BS and in reality these hockey guys know more than me.

So, maybe they make some shrewd trades and get Ruutu for Cole (if that is shrewd) and maybe they dump an attitude problem in Penner or Nilson for someone with a good locker room attitude….

I dunno, the good thing is, just like an old lady watching As the World Turns, I will stay tuned and then come back here to jabber about it with the rest of you old ladies…

  195. bookie says:

With all that said, maybe the shrewd move is for Lowe and Tambi to get rid of MacT…Maybe…I dunno…

  196. St George says:

“Pisani (Corsi -9) and his rust played 1:42 of the last 2:44″

Unreal. And I’m a huge Pisani fan.

How can you be surprised at that? I tried to be cute in my comment at the start of this post, but the guy hasn’t played this year and missed a chunk of last year … it is going to take him a while to get comfortable again, which is why I thought it was a puzzling game to re-insert him into the lineup when we have a number of guys who had been playing ok on the 3rd and 4th lines (the captain excepted).

  197. HBomb says:

Well, things could be worse, fellas. You could’ve been one of the unfortunate bastards that paid hard-earned money to sit in a seat and watch this running joke. I can’t imagine how pissed off I’d be.

I didn't pay for my ticket (thanks Dad!), but I still feel ripped off having to pay for gas to get to the game.

What an absolute fucking disgrace of an effort. You'd think that after a shitty performance in a win on Tuesday, this team would have been better prepared for tonight, right?

No. This looked like something out of the March 2007 post-94 departure horror show. Might have been worse, because we all know this team can be better than this. Right now, though, they're less than the sum of their parts, and that HAS to fall on the coach.

I'm with Black Dog – MacT will get a coach elsewhere, but it's time for a damned change. Some of the shit I'm seeing out there is stupid. I didn't think Penner was great tonight (despite what the numbers may say), but to have him on the bench while Ethan "I'm the dumbest fucking pile of shit captain in NHL history" Moreau and Fernando "hasn't played in three months" Pisani are out in the final minutes? That's just plain stupid.

Nilsson's playing his bag off. We won't hear a thing about it though, but when he has an off-night like he did on Saturday, the coach is SURE to point it out.

The only difference between Staios and Strudwick right now is that one makes five times as much (cap hit wise) as the other – for the record, 43 was the best Oiler tonight. That contract needs to go, pronto. Even if they've got to get creative New Jersey style to get some sucker to take 24 and 18 off their hands, do it now.

If they lose on Saturday – sell and sell hard. Moreau, Staios, Cole, even Roloson. Get what you can. Because this team is going nowhere even if they do make the playoffs. Problem is, Lowe's going to step in to try and save his buddy's skin as head coach, we're going to see Omark for Guerin or something equally short-sighted and stupid, and it will go from there.

I'm utterly disgusted right now. I left the arena with 3 minutes to go because I knew there was no hope. I didn't even get mad knowing the refs missed a blatant holding call 10 seconds before the Torres goal (by the way, last summer I said Torres > Moreau, and I stand by that now), because the Oilers didn't deserve to win this game anyways!

I want to see this team succeed, but not for the next six weeks. If they squeak in the playoffs, I fear they don't get the change they need in the form of a new direction from behind the bench. It's that simple. Short term pain for long term gain.

  198. Dennis says:

Seems like my SC’s are matching well with Corsi because I had Penner at 8/7 while I had 27 and 34 logging 1/8 and 1/6 respectively.

I’ve defended MacT for a long time but it’s getting harder and harder. Perhaps it’s because of the losses of first 71 and then 27 but the team has been consistently outchanced at EV and if that keeps happening, you have to ask why. Tonight, the Oilers were leaving the slot unattended over and over again.

    Why?

And I’ve got no problem giving the Jackets some cred for working hard but why do the Oilers get outworked all the time? or is it that they’re being told to go to the wrong places? or perhaps they simply aren’t good enough.

Now, a big problem right now is 10′s line has gone cold and it’s not just bad luck. I’ve logged enough to know you don’t score unless you’re creating chances and right now the top dogs aren’t getting it done. And then we know they aren’t getting enough help from 89′s line and that 13′s isn’t any great shakes either.

    So, what’s the problem?

    Coaching?

    Roster construction?

    A little of both?

The things that can really drive you nuts is how we’re either always building – things like letting 13 take a beating at pivot while you won’t let 78 near the role AND not to mention 89 as the soft minute pivot – or we’re looking back to an old guard that no longer has their legs; that’s tonight with going to 18-34 with the goalie pulled.

And it’s not working anymore and it didn’t work last year except for the fact we kicked ass in the SO and according to Ty, we had an unsustainable PP shooting PCT.

So, how long do you keep changing the roster before you just say “fuck it” and you bring in a new boot to kick the asses.

I don’t get as upset about the losses anymore because I’m as beaten down as any Oilers fan:) You might have hope for a few months but eventually you don’t Let yourself imagine what it would be like to watch the playoffs.

All that being said, I think it’s insane to keep things the way they are.

Then again, the 10 line might go on a fucking tear and we might take advantage of what really is a light sked to finish the year.

But then you’ll have two or three no-show’s (most likely at Rexall) and you wonder why that has to happen so fucking often.

  199. St George says:

Then again, the 10 line might go on a fucking tear and we might take advantage of what really is a light sked to finish the year.

A steak dinner says that’s not going to happen either. The whole team just looks so disorganized whenever they are out on the ice, I can’t imagine the circumstance that would allow that to transpire.

  200. Dennis says:

    One last thing;)

The first time the Oil played CBJ this season, LT Failed to put up a picture of Torres as a tribute.

I warned him at the time.

    Since then, Raffi has

    A: concussed Smid
B: scored both CBJ game-winners in the series.

    So……;)
