Slava Trukhno doesn’t look like he’s progressing. He’s at 47gp, 6-18-24 -11 (.511 points-per-game) which is down from last season’s less than stellar performance (64gp, 14-21-35 -16 .547 points-per-game).
He has not improved since Rob Daum took over as coach and looking at the boxcars he looks like a guy who might be nearing his peak as a professional hockey player. He is not a checking winger and despite having some ability on the powerplay and some impressive outings in TC it looks for all the world like he’s stalling out in the AHL.
Let’s look at those situational stats to see if there’s a silver lining.
- 07-08 EV: 64gp, 5-11-16 .250ppg
- 08-09 EV: 47gp, 4-10-14 .298ppg
So there’s some improvement at EV strength. It’s not a huge step forward (it works out to 2 extra points over a season) but let’s give credit where due.
- 07-08 PP: 64gp, 9-10-19 .296ppg
- 08-09PP: 47gp, 2-7-9 .191ppg
We see a huge drop off in this area. Trukhno doesn’t have a PP point in quite some time and it may be that he no longer plays regularly on that unit. Generally speaking you’d like a player to be performing well at evens since there’s little chance of extended PP time when the prospect arrives in the show for the first time.
- 07-08Shots: 94 in 64 gp, 1.47 per game
- 08-09Shots: 82 in 47gp, 1.74 per game
For what it’s worth he’s shooting more and that should have a positive offensive impact. Finally, let’s look at team scoring in order to put this in context:
- 07-08 Falcons: 214 goals in 80 games, 2.68GF per game
- 08-09 Falcons: 153 goals in 66 games, 2.32GF per game
That’s a significant decline in GF. Trukhno was involved in 16.3% of team offense a year ago and is now involved in 15.7% of team offense this season. One suspects that if we broke it down to EVs Trukhno would improve season over season.
I don’t think he’s progressing enough as a prospect to be considered a legit NHL player down the line. I ranked him as the organization’s #13 prospect in the winter rankings and should he continue at this rate Trukhno may not make the summer 20.
He needs to be better.
