Oilers pick at 82: Cameron Abney
Cameron Abney, Everett. Strengths: Huge frame. Excellent fighter. Actually pretty decent skater. Can throw some big hits.
Weaknesses: Has trouble contributing to the game with the gloves on. Hasn’t shown much ability to do anything but fight yet.
Summary: Never a bad idea to bring a 6-4 guy who can drop the gloves to your rookie camp. At least he’ll stir things up.

Six-foot-four and some filling out still to do (already 192 lbs).
Coke machine?
Anyone else more than mildly disappointed with an enforcer in the third round with some high risk high potential players still available?
4 points in 48 games.
WTF?
Dumb pick. Stupid pick.
Stu MacGregor, you are no longer magnificent.
An enforcer? Jesus….why waste a 3rd rounder on a guy with zero offense?
I don't like what they're doing.
I don't know these players, I can't say much about them, but there are real players on the board.
I just don't understand this pick. Stu MacGregor, you dumb bastard.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. We can get enforcers though Free-Agency. Or at least draft them like Zorg: can put in points in Junior, and is a leader.
Stupid stupid pick!

Holy shit.
I suspect this is a decision by the organization to bring in some filthy players. Sort of like Bendfeld a year ago.
The concern, as it was with the Coke Machines drafted 00-03, is that the Oilers are doing this extremely early. This fellow should have been available much later in this draft.
I couldn't care less how much he can fight. The fact is this guy can't contribute to a winning hockey team. Taking him was just idiotic.
Why not take a goalie here?
Just idiotic. Words cannot describe how dumb this pick was.
Just can't.
The one punch is impressive, but Good Lord, you spend a 7th rounder on that.
Not a 3rd.
Between this shit and the Flames picking up JBo's rights, not a good Saturday so far.
9:15am? Screw it. Beer me.
This is just an incredibly disappointing pick. There are still some projects who could be actual players on the board at the end of the third.
I'm tempted to step it up from "dumb bastard" to "dumb c*nt" when it comes to this pick.
An enforcer. In the third round. Maddening.
Nice YouTube.
Hockey is pretty dumb sometimes.
Like MacT, is the scouting staff trying to get fired?
Man I am pissed about this third round. We should have tried to trade both 3rd round picks to get Chicago's 2nd rounder and took a stab at Tatar: the little dynamo drops to 60th.
Or we could have traded down, since these 3rd rounders don't really help anyone.
That was like our 3rd for Boulerice or SMmac.
Bravo.
What a disappointing pick.
Side note: Is anyone else confused by the Islanders' draft? A goalie to start the second round, a goalie to start the 3rd round? Presumably they thought they were BPA, but that's still weird.
Oilers braintrust reeling from the J-Bo to the Flames news, pick a fighter in anticipation of those thrilling battles down those icy roads ahead.
This pick is the one that's a head scratcher to me. The Hesketh pick is a guy who blossomed late (in terms of a growth spurt and then some nice numbers post-season) and that's what the third round + is for (reach picks) but this guy won't ever return value at this number.
And I have no ties to MacGregor, but no way in hell this is anything other than the organization deciding to get meaner and more difficult to play against.
With all the talk about drafting the BPA, these guys take a bottom 6 player at 4 (With Elliot available), take an unknown defenceman at 70, and a fighter who's ceiling is MacIntyre.
At least Stortini put up semi-good numbers.
I just can't understand this pick. There's no logic behind it.
It was noted that the entire scouting staff contract runs out at the end of this year. That may not be a bad thing.
I miss Kevin Lowe today.
The days of value late-round picks? Over.
God, when you draft a guy in the 3rd round who has trouble contributing with his gloves on, you know you did something ridiculous. What the hell? Did the SMac on waivers thing not demonstrate to these guys that you can just get guys like this for free whenever you feel like it?
I'm going to post again, because it is worth repeating.
What a dumb, idiotic, pick.
Flames got a good pick right after us to. Ryan Howse.
The picks for Edmonton in this draft have gone from consensus, to a bit of a reach, to completely off the board, now down to batshit crazy. At this rate we're drafting a backup zamboni driver at 101.
I don't know that I completely agree with Lowetide when he prefaces some posts by mentioning that NHL teams are pretty good at identifying talent. But when I'm starting to agree with that point of view, there's always picks like this to change my mind.
Could have been a keying error; who knows?
I actually don't object to picking this guy. WHERE they picked him is the concern.
And I agree speeds, it's picks like these that have no chance of covering the bet that really tell us some organizations don't get it.
Ok, Kyle Brodziak gone to Minnesota now – to move up two spots.
Jesus F. Christ. This better be good.
I am utterly disappointed with the picking now.
I'm not the biggest Elliot or Rajalla fan but either would have looked like gold instead of Abney.
Harding better be involved later….
What?!? Brodziak, really?
Zack Stortini
2001-02 (16 y.o.) 65 GP, 8-6-14, 187 PiM
2002-03 (17 y.o.) 62 GP, 13-16-29, 222 PiM
3rd round, 94th overall
Cameron Abney
2007-08 (16 y.o.) 4 GP, 0-0-0, 0 PiM
2008-09 (17 y.o.) 48 GP, 1-3-4, 103 PiM
3rd round, 82nd overall
Abney was about 4 months older for the comparable seasons.
To which I can only add, WTF?
WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING?
Oilers hittin' the sauce early? or what?
Rajala
Nice gamble at this point
We got Rajala, that's cool.
Let's recap:
Best players available in the draft: Tavares, Hedman, Duschene – all go to other teams … check
Chris bloody Pronger to Flyers, instantly helping them look like serious contenders(recall 2006 anyone?) … check
Bouwmeester to Flames, thus guaranteeing our bitterest rivals forever two of the top young defencemen in hockey …check
Oilers – All talk no action … check
Bryan Hall will be taking all questions the next time he returns from that dodgy steak house he shills for… check
Is there anything I've missed here?
now brodziak: WTF I am starting drinking and I have a date after this is done. If the Oilers ruin my date, by this stupidity, I'll kill someone!
This is becoming psychotic.
I really hate to bring this one up, but imagine when the Flyers hire MacTavish, who along with Pronger go on to win the cup?
Ok, it was Brodziak for a 3rd rounder. That makes a bit more sense….guess "Vanilla Useful" MAP (that one's for you Traktor!) is our 4th line centre this year.
Good point Bruce. We know Stortini stinks and this guy can't even touch his junior numbers. WTF is right.
Button just said Edmonton had great ice. When will that finally die?
hunter
Dream on – the Flyers always need a goaltender.
We know Stortini stinks and this guy can't even touch his junior numbers.
RQ: I know you're just trying to bait me (again), but the numbers say otherwise:

At least the Oil didn't waste their third-rounder that time. This year, colour me dubious.
Obviously, Tambellini was off by a round:
"For our second pick we are going to go with a projection pick, a player that has a real big upside."
I'm trying not to think about it either:
Getting drafted would be really amazing, but I just try not to think about it. It would be really cool if a team takes a risk on me because I haven't gotten a lot of games this year
