Oilers pick at 99: Kyle Bigos
Big, big kid. Among the internet notes:
A big bruising defenseman who manages the defense in his own end. Bigos also displayed a heck of a shot with Vernon this season. One scout compared him to a bigger version of Scott Stevens (not a bad compliment).
Also this from the EagleTribune: Bigos likely has the best chance of getting picked, some scouts believe as high as the second round. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound defenseman wrapped his junior career in May by being named the MVP of the Royal Bank Cup (Canada’s junior hockey national championship). Several have indicated that the New Jersey Devils are high on him.
6.05, 230. He turned 20 in May.

Brodziak gone? WHAT THE hell? To move up 2 spots?
More size and character. Hopefully more than 4 points to show for it.
I'm only half-joking.
Shows some aptitude at hockey. More promising.
The weird thing is that I heard something yesterday that suggested the Oilers were talking extension with the Brodziak camp that was getting close (3 years @ 700K per was what I heard).
So this definitely is a head scratcher.
As for this pick – Kyle IS Bigos. 6'5", 230lbs.
The 101st pick makes up for the 3rd round mistakes. TONI RAJALA nice!
We didn't move up, we piced Rajala @ 101 also.
another player with a brother who is a personal trainer, too. i guess that's a good thing

Confirmed that Brodziak is traded. I don't like this one bit – unless Harding comes back the other way.
They picked Rajala as well.
Not to move up.
Ok, Brodziak for the 99th overall – that makes (more) sense.
Btodziak for 99th and 133rd, says official website.
Way too much for Brodziak. The guy was an established player, who put up strong numbers on the 4th line, and was a good bet to outperform.
What a terrible start to a Saturday
If I'm reading this right, Bigos is already 20 years old and played with the Vernon Vipers in the BCHL last year. He's such a hot prospect that HockeyDB hasn't updated his 2008-09 stats.
Trading Brodziak is one thing. Turning around and burning the fucking pick is something else again.
I'm very, very bewildered by this.
^Should have read "Not enough for Brodziak"

Great. Fucking great.
Those are some awful, awful, jerseys.
More on Bigos
Brodziak was a much better player than he demonstrated this year under Mac-crazy-T this year. I don't really see the gain in dumping him. He was low cost and effective with a good upside (solid 3rd liner).
Maybe he was a problem in the room or something?
Seems strange unless there is another move coming that is closely tied to this one.
Still more on Bigos
This is a little more promising, although I'd be a lot more interested if the guy was 18. Anybody happen to watch the Royal Bank Cup this year?
I think the Brodziak thing boils down to Brodziak asking for too much money in a 4th line role. Aka, we can get a veteran UFA 3rd liner for the kind of money he was asking for.
Thanks for the links, Bruce.
I've never heard of the guy but he sounds like a pretty good player to have around.
