Oilers Invite Hulak over the Border

The Saskatoon Blades will be well represented at this fall’s Oiler rookie camp. Milan Kytnar is an Oilers draftee who has signed a pro contract, and earlier this month Burke Gallimore (his linemate) was also invited.

Word tonight that the third member of the trio–Derek Hulak–has also been extended an invitation and will be part of the rookie camp in September. Hulak will turn 20 next month, was the Blades’ captain and leading point-getter.

And what's not to like about that? Love those mature juniors with leadership history. Similar words could have been used to describe Jarret Stoll and Danny Syvret when Oilers drafted them in the second and third rounds respectively. I was thrilled with both picks at the time — MUCH more than I was with Cam Abday, PJO will be relieved to hear :) — and remain convinced both will have NHL careers.

Not sure Hulak is a comp with those guys talent-wise — he has no Team Canada pedigree, for one thing — but it's a no-risk bet. 72 GP, 30-46-76, +18 are pretty nice boxcars, and it's worth noting that "his" team posted a 49-18-5 mark, which is also in Stoll/Syvret territory. Not just a captain, but captain of a winner.

    As a walk-on? I absolutely love it.

    A potential Falcons line?

Hulak's story sounds a lot like Stortini's but a shade shy of the toughness department.

But that means he could turn into a pretty solid role player in the NHL, in much the way that Montreal expects Kyle Chipchura turns out (though he has a Team Canada vetting).

Off topic, but does anyone listen to Bob McCown?

Best radio host in the country by a mile.

I love the Oiler ventures into making little moves like this. All in all likely to result in nothing, but there's always a chance you find a gem.

Much like college UFAs, this is basically having a picking of the best from a free pool of talent and if anything sticks, bonus.

I can't stand listening to him.

    PJO: love your sarcastic delivery

LT: I remember some reference to being able to sign undrafted Gallimore during camp???????

    Where in the CBA?

  8. Lowetide says:

rickibear: I recall something about that, it was either at Guy's or Jonathan's place.

  9. uni says:

It was Guy who posted it, apparently there is a small window to sign Gallimore at the conclusion of the camp.

Hulak has an awesome backstory, too. Nice work by the Pats and Blades to get him back to Saskatoon when he needed to be here.

  11. spOILer says:

I don't get it. Neither Hulak nor Gallimore are midgets.

Despite being over-age, Hulak shows nice progression in his numbers over his W career.

@ She: Thanks for the link.

She: Thanks for that, makes me feel even better about this invite. Even if the kid isn't really a player and Oilers training camp turns out to be the highlight of his career, it's the right thing to do. If nothing else he seems to have major league character, and that can take a player a long way.

"Some of the Blades' accomplishments have brought [dad] Joe to tears this season. The team clinched its first East Division pennant in 15 years and Derek stretched his iron-man streak to 175 games. He hasn't missed a start since joining the Blades 2 1/2 seasons ago, and his dad has seen most of them."

Like I said up top, what's not to like?

  14. doritogrande says:

    Great story She.

If this kid had been a first rounder, we'd be talking about the next Mike Richards.

However, to play devil's advocate here, if we sign him to a contract, that's another on the books for 3 years. It's a touching story and all, but what if he takes to pro hockey like Brian Pitton?

  15. uni says:

Dorito: I may be wrong but I don't think his contract counts until he's playing in the AHL/NHL which he won't necessarily be doing.
