Stone Soul Picnic

The Edmonton Oilers have signed winger Ryan Stone to a 1-year, two-way contract for 2009-10. Capgeek reports the number for NHL time at $600,000.

Stone is in a good position to see some NHL action this season. Above him on the depth chart (LW) are Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano (apparently), Ethan Moreau and JF Jacques. Steve MacIntyre is the designated knuckle-dragger for the portside.

Stone’s grit and ability (he’s a solid AHL player) make him a nice callup option for injury. The Oilers forward group appears to be in flux as the team heads to training camp and it is possible he wins a job over some of the men above him on the depth chart.

I'm torn — good contract, not an NHL player.

    Hmmmmm.

torn over what?.. like you said, an AHL player.. wont count against the cap.. makes the AHL team better by instilling qualities the franchise wants to promote.. last year the AHL team was embarassing to anyone whom identified with it (me guesses), so its good to see them upgrade (and retain quality ahl players for) their affiliate, imo…

I'm torn on LT's suggestion of Stone making the team. It would be good for the cap but bad for the team.

    Can Stone PK?

    Can any of our AHL'ers.

Who can PK, should be a big thing at camp, IMO. Should be, not to say it will.

I think he'd be behind Reddox on the depth chart too.

It makes me sad that Potulny isn't likely to get a shot this year.
