    $$ = 89?? :(

  2. OF17 says:

    "Mike will help us."

It's true. Very little risk with this move and huge potential for reward, either in the form of a guy who helps us into the playoffs or who is a big trading chip on deadline day. Why don't the Oilers make these types of bets more often? I'd like to see guys like Niedermayer, Bonk, Malhotra, Betts, Moore, or others get one-year cheap try-out deals like Comrie may be getting.

  3. Doogie2K says:

    "Mike will help us."

    It's true.

How so? His skillset is duplicated elsewhere in the lineup, and doesn't address any of the team's deficiencies. We've already got four second-line forwards who are theoretically centres, we don't need a fifth.

  4. PunjabiOil says:

He's referring to Pisani's comment that "Mike will help us"

    As per Dan Tencer twitter.

Though you have to wonder why it hasn't been made official yet.

  5. HBomb says:

Talk about trying to pound square pegs into round holes and stocking up on small forwards. The cap hit of 1.3 million (rumored) would be a good value if this team didn't already have Gagner, Cogliano, Nilsson, and O'Sullivan.

Do we have firm confirmation yet that this is actually happening?

The only good thing? This pushes Rob Schremp even further down the depth chart. Good times.

Oh – I'm having beer for lunch. I love being on vacation from work.

  6. Mark-Ryan says:

If it's true, Nilsson is done and they're taking the 10 extra goals and 700k in salary space.

I like Rowbert, but I got to say, that doesn't seem so bad.

  7. Scott says:

    Terms?

  8. Hockey Noob says:

What about Malhotra, lol? I would rather see him signed for somewhere around $1.5 if possible than Comrie.

  9. Lowetide says:

HBomb: No confirmation yet, but this looks done.

    1. Get yer fucking shinebox Robbie!
    2. One of the young small F's is done.
    3. Could the Heatley trade be back on?

  10. Dennis says:

    Nothing surprises me anymore.

  11. HBomb says:

Lowetide: this doesn't make sense on it's own, there's got to be something more to it. Has to, right? RIGHT???

  12. PunjabiOil says:

Dustin Neilson of team 1260 has also reported on this twitter that Comrie's equipment has been shipped to Rexall place.

It looks like it's done. Warmed up to the idea that it's an over-performing contract.

Hopefully they're also fielding a call to the hobo that is Michael Peca.

  13. kris says:

    LT,

Adding Comrie for cheap only makes more sense if we're doing a two for one to bring in a star player.

But making sense is not the Oilers thing these days.

  14. Lowetide says:

HBomb: Well Healy resigned to remain true to his principles, maybe Lowe will too.

  15. Doogie2K says:

He's referring to Pisani's comment that "Mike will help us"

    As per Dan Tencer twitter.

I know what he's referring to. I was responding to the "It's true."

  16. Doogie2K says:

Hopefully they're also fielding a call to the hobo that is Michael Peca.

I would be happy with this.

  17. Lowetide says:

Comrie, Cogliano, Gagner, Hemsky, Nilsson, O'Sullivan.

    Jeebus.

  18. HBomb says:

Lowetide: I'd have preferred if Lowe had resigned on July 1st 2006 then. Prior to:

    - The Pronger trade to Anaheim
    - The stupid extensions to Moreau and Staios
    - The Smyth trade
    - The Souray and Penner signings
    - Trading Torres for Brule
    - Letting Glencross walk

Then again, if that had happened, we may not have had the Hemsky contract or the beauty Visnovsky acquisition….

  19. misfit says:

I don't like to pretend I know more about hockey than the guys running the team, but if this is indeed true, it just goes to prove one of two things:

    1. Tambellini has no idea what this team needs to be successful.

    2. Katz is way more involved in putting together the roster than any owner should.

  20. kris says:

If all they do is add a player without sending someone out, will someone in the MSM please ask Tamb. why he continually lied about not being able to bring any player -even a cheap 3C- in without also moving a body out.

Pleaaassseee have some backbone media people.

There's no point in having access if you don't care about what you're told being true.

  21. Lord Bob says:

Theory: Tambs is going to sign Comrie then flip him for Perry.

Alternative theory: Tambs is gunning for the Oilers to get a contract filming "Lord of the Rings" sequels.

  22. HBomb says:

Lord Bob: alternative theory more likely.

Sad fact: if Lowe had taken the Perry deal and done what he should have (insisted on Getzlaf for Pronger), that dynamic duo could have been playing here (even though Perry on the Oilers would have made me puke a little).

    Sigh.

  23. DBO says:

misfit: Katz is more involved. He negotiated Horcoff's deal, he wants comrie because he thinks heatley will come here since they are buddies. I just hope we go back to Murray and say same deal but sub Nilsson for Cogliano. take it or leave it. Murray has no power since they absolutely have to move Heatley. And we haven't even mentioend that getting heatley means moving salary, probably from our d corps.

    Heatley-Comrie-Hemsky
    Moreau-Horcoff-Pisani
    Cogliano-Gagner-O'Sullivan
    jacques-Pouliot-Stortini

Not a bad lineup, just wonder who we move from our defense on top of Smid.

  24. Mark-Ryan says:

"I don't like to pretend I know more about hockey than the guys running the team, but if this is indeed true, it just goes to prove one of two things:

    1. Tambellini has no idea what this team needs to be successful.

    2. Katz is way more involved in putting together the roster than any owner should."

    3. Tambellini genuinely feels that goal scoring is a hole that needs to be addressed on the open market and has upgraded on the current talent level.

They have never acknowledged the need for this "tough minute centre" we're clammering for (me included). They want Pouliot and Brule in those roster spots. Bank on it.

  25. kris says:

Comrie, Cogliano, Gagner, Hemsky, Nilsson, O'Sullivan.

    The Smurfs:

Hemsky as 'Hefty Smurf' (heavy lifting…)
    Nilson as 'Lazy Smurf'
    Cogliano as 'Brainy Smurf'
    Gagner as 'Baby Smurf'
    Comrie as 'Grouchy Smurf'

    and so on…

  26. OF17 says:

The absolute worst case scenario is that Comrie flops and eats up $1.3 million of Katz's cash. We lose no assets, agree that the signing wasn't great, and move on with our lives.

Best case scenario? We have a dynamic 30-30-60 forward who will either help the team make the playoffs or be big trade bait on deadline day.

And as evidenced by his playoffs with Ottawa, this isn't the Mike "Sugartits" Comrie we shaw when he was an Oiler. He plays with more intensity and actually back checks, to the point where he isn't a big liability defensively. The signing would also open up room for a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 trade for a highly-skilled guy to play in the top-6.

  27. RyanB says:

This just makes my head hurt. We do nothing all summer only to drop this in. It addresses none of the teams issues in any way. There has to be a trade coming with this as well.

  28. DBO says:

If they do sign Comrie, it means they are going to go for it. let's just hope they do not sacrifice all our youth for one or two years. Then go sign Malhotra andbetts for cheap, send Nilsson, brule and pouliot to the minors, do not tender schremp a deal (let him walk) and go into the season with vets. you can't sign an undersized veteran and not address the glaring needs of size and 3C.

  29. Lord Bob says:

The worst-case scenario is that Comrie is sucking wind in the lineup for eighty-two games and costing us $1.3 million in already scarce cap space we could use to fill an actual hole.

You might say that they could bury Comrie in the minors, but this team never does that. Not even with Steve Staios.

  30. B.C.B. says:

    Are Seven Dwarfs:

Doc- Hemskey (for his precision passing, it is like surgery)
    Grumpy- Comrie (not explaining)
Dopey- Brule (from all the pain medication, for the early career injuries)
Sneezy- Patty'O (it explains his shooting %, someone get him sudafed and it will improve)
Sleepy- Nilsson (which would explain his play last year)
Bashful- Gags (never said "Sam Gagner Hockey", or refers to himself in the third person)
Happy- Cogs (for not being traded)

  31. Lord Bob says:

And co-starring Rob Schremp as Gargamel.

  32. kris says:

No, no LB. Nice try, but you must be too young to remember the smurfs.

    Rob Schremp as 'Bigmouth'

And there's no such smurf as 'F-Bomb Smurf' or I'd have gone with that. He'd have ruined the cartoon, though.

Smurfs: "La lala lala, oh let's sing a smurfing song.'

F-Bomb Smurf: "Shut the fuck up you mother fuckers.'

  33. shepso says:

I've been silent all summer, (too busy moving across Canada and preparing to defend the 100lb baby known as my thesis), but I cannot remain silent any longer.
I know grumpy smurf personally, don't like him, don't see how he can help and really hate this. I know at this point it's purely rumors and conjecture, but this reeks of stupidity, irresponsibility and nepotism. It almost makes me want to take the year off from both blogging and my beloved Oilers, perhaps even the sport of Hockey itself, (olympic tournament excluded), and just hide under a rock in humiliation and disgust. He will not help us. He is redundant in this current lineup and does nothing to address the team's glaringly obvious needs. The question here is why? Why would this decision be made? Who is to blame for this. I don't want to believe that Katz would do this just because he's Mike's Dad's good buddy. If a trade is in the works, fine, as long as the trade addresses a legitimate need (3C, players with heart and intensity, someone larger than 5'9/165, someone who can consistently put puck in net like every second game). I just don't get it. Is Katz the new Illitch? Are our beloved Oilers turning into the "Dead Things" of the 80s? I just don't understand.

  34. Lord Bob says:

Katz isn't the new Ilitch, because the Oilers haven't signed every college senior in the United States yet. Which is a shame, since at least that way we'd get some good players.

  35. Coach pb9617 says:

    Big Ben?

    Parliament?

  36. Lowetide says:

Ilitch bought the Wings in 1982 and the won a Stanley 15 years later. This gives us a timeline for an owner who figured it out but they had some bad hirings and trades over the years too.

I'll be close to 65 then, the blog will be called "Sundown" and Dennis will be down to 12 Pronger mentions a year.

  37. shepso says:

And I'll be Dr. Shepso at that point, but I'll still hate Mike Comrie…

  38. HBomb says:

Coach "Z" (Derek, if you don't get this particular Homestar Runner reference, I'll be disappointed):

I did not see Traktor post in this thread – did I miss something?

  39. PDO says:

Only makes sense if there is a two for one deal in place with someone, somewhere.

Nilsson would presumably be one of the forwards, and either Penner or O'Sullivan the other one…

  40. fiftymissioncap says:

Comrie will sign, but it turns out the terms are actually $3 million for one season. Then all the people thinking this is an okay move will be pissed, ie. everyone will be pissed, ie. all will be right with the Oiler fan world again. QED.

  41. Big Dave Semenko says:

Apparently, the 'You must be at least this tall to be a top six forward' sign is still on backorder.

  42. Psyche says:

Lord Bob you totally beat me to the Hobbit comparison.

Maybe the plan is to have one big guy on each line (Penner, Stortini, Jacques, Moreau) with two little buddies.

Seriously though, can Comrie pot 25 goals as a top six forward with the Oilers? Will he need to eat up heaps of PP time to accomplish that mark? And ultimately, does he make this team better today?

  43. Hockey Noob says:

@PDO, Timo Seppa from Puck Prospectus had emailed me some data the other day. He has a new metric, ESTR, which attempts to evaluate the value of a player at even strength while balancing out various factors such as qualcomp, qualteam, etc.

Anyway, I posted the data yesterday and Nilsson was our 2nd ranked forward by this particular metric. Who was number 1? Yup, Dustin Penner, lol. Clearly these results have met with some controversy.

  44. bookie says:

Last week I said that there was no evidence that Katz was playing King here, and I still don't think there is (solid evidence), BUT there is a pretty strong suggestion that Katz+some members of management are in disagreement with other members of management (due to the quote that "This is not happening as we do not need what Comrie brings" – Note:paraphrase.

    So, here are my theories.

Katz and Tambi – For signing Comrie
KLowe – Against (and source of quote) based upon past history.

    or

Katz and other management – For signing Comrie (though signing concept initiated by Katz and Lowe and Tambi are following).

Against – Some high ranking Player such as Moreau who had been consulted by management about the possibility of signing and thought that he had killed the deal.

    or (Terrible Senerio)

    Katz – For signing

    Against – Tambi

Oh, dear god we are doomed….

BUT, I want to reitterate that I think Katz is contributing to the decisions, but not dominating them. At least we have no evidence to counter that.

  45. hunter1909 says:

In so many ways I hope they sign the little creep. I'm just itching to jump off this ship of fools that's the Oilers bandwagon. His pathetic persona should be the final straw, even for me.

  46. jdrevenge says:

I dunno… I think that if the Heatley thing doesn't go through. Which I doubt it will. Despite his size Comrie might be a better fit on the top line. And at that price if he falls to the 3line and can muck it up thats fine too.

  47. Coach pb9617 says:

I did not see Traktor post in this thread – did I miss something?

No. But since he rarely posts, Comrie has become Horcoff.

    Or something.

These people try to fade me!

  48. bookie says:

also, I am ok with the signing if the $$ is quite low and there is a willingness to relegate the worse performer (Comrie, Nillson, etc.) to the minors.

  49. Hockey Noob says:

@PDO, are you suggesting that we dump one or the other of our two best ranked forward skaters at ESTR, or do not really buy into this metric? Timo's got his data posted on his own site now:

    ESTR

  50. Coach pb9617 says:

Wow, in a race to the bottom, it's Montreal and Edmonton.

    Bottom meaning floor, of course.

  51. Oilman says:

Comrie, Cogliano, Gagner, Hemsky, Nilsson, O'Sullivan.

    Jeebus.

    What position does Jeebus play:o)

  52. hunter1909 says:

Oilers need one of those height measuring signs like Tom Hanks had to stand under in "Big".

shepso: Nice writing. Couldn't have said it any better myself.

  53. bookie says:

    Penner = Giganto Smurf

It just seems wrong to leave Penner out of Smufdome

    Schremp = WTF Smurf

  54. PDO says:

    Hockey Noob:

It's clearly trying to do too much.

Nilsson played with good players against the dregs and finished +2.

Horcoff played with the best against the other teams best and finished +9.

Yet it's ranking Nilsson higher? Yeah, not buying it…. again, it's just trying to do too much and it's mucking the results up.

  55. Boondock says:

In so many ways I hope they sign the little creep. I'm just itching to jump off this ship of fools that's the Oilers bandwagon. His pathetic persona should be the final straw, even for me.

I've been trying to see the bright side of a Comrie signing all morning and I just may have found it.

  56. shepso says:

Thanks Hunter! It seems that bitterness tends to bring out the best in me. I wish I knew what to make of this. I'm almost glad the NFL season is starting soon. It'll be a great distraction from what I feel will be known soon as the season of discontent in Oil Country.

Also, just to put it out there in advance: To any of the regulars on this site that live in southern Ontario, we should discuss the possibility of a road trip to an eastern market (Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit etc) in full force. I have a vehicle and am located in Kingston, so half way between basically everywhere out here. A discussion of such things should be had in the not-to-distant future. I may be bitter and jaded, but I still want to see some live NHL action at some point, even if it is simply to be able to curse at Comrie in person.

  57. Oilman says:

Comrie, Cogliano, Gagner, Hemsky, Nilsson, O'Sullivan.

    Jeebus.

    What position does Jeebus play:o)

  58. knighttown says:

The league is full of players that make a career of scoring 50 points on bad teams. They score the big goal that brings things to 5-2 from 5-1. They have 3 assists on the PP in the 7-3 loss. However, they go 0-fer and -2 in the 2-1 must-win game.

Mike Comrie is that player…always was. The bad news is, today we found out we are that team.

When these players go to good teams they get benched (Sykora/Satan-playoffs 2009), healthy scratched (Huselius-Flames 2007) or traded (Lupul-Philly 2009). Poolies and the un-washed look at David Backes and Mike Comrie and think they are equivalent.

    We know different.

  59. Black Dog says:

Maybe Katz is going to enter a club in the Quebec Peewee tournament?

  60. Coach pb9617 says:

Also, just to put it out there in advance: To any of the regulars on this site that live in southern Ontario, we should discuss the possibility of a road trip to an eastern market (Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit etc) in full force.

    Well screw you Shepso!

Gee, I wonder if THIS was the "Mike" Pisani was referring to…;)

  64. Coach pb9617 says:

    my response to tencer:

    @dantencer You're an asshat.

  65. shepso says:

Sorry Coach: I will rephrase. To Anyone in anywhere in southern/eastern Ontario or Quebec regions, we should get in touch and plan a road trip of sorts. This is an open invitation to anyone anywhere nearby that might be interested, not to just the folks like BCB in London or MC79 in Toronto, but anyone that wants in. I have a car, maybe some of you do to, but a full-fledged battalion of Oiler fans invading an eastern city would be a really good time-again, even if it's just to curse Comrie and get a little drunk…

  66. mc79hockey says:

    I hate you.

  69. Hockey Noob says:

    @PDO,

Thanks for the feedback–a very good point. I like the idea behind the ESTR metric, but I am not quite sure how he has it weighted. It's possible or likely perhaps that's it is over valuing one of the parameters which is why Nilsson ranks so highly. At the same time, it does a somewhat decent job of stratifying better players higher like Visnovsky and weaker players lower like Moreau and Staios.

  70. shepso says:

@Coach: What the hell? If this goes down, I would hope that you'd be in on it…but feel free to hate me anyways. I'm a douchebag grad student. Sometimes I hate myself…

here's mirtle on faceoff from 2005, when sillinger was no. 5 man in the league:

  81. Ribs says:

    To answer my own question….

Internationally Sillinger represented Team Canada on two occasions, winning a gold medal at the 1991 World Junior Championship and leading his country as their captain at the 2000 World Championship

They must have a list of these guys.

  82. shepso says:

Sillinger isn't a bad option in this role. I still have beef with that other mike though.

@coach… good. I can deal with that. It's been a long few weeks.

  83. gonadsgo says:

I may be in the minority, but independently, I don't think this is an awful move purely based on who our coach is.

The largest argument against this team is the lack of balance, but is balance as important now?

MacT was all about preparation and adaptibility. Players who could bring many different things (Pisani, Horcoff) were relied upon and 06 was as successful as it was because the team was filled with them.

Quinn is not this kind of coach. Quinn's teams take their games to the opponent and force the opponent to adapt because they play their game better than the other team can.

Under this assumption, what's wrong with adding Comrie? Imbalance can work as long as you are better at what you do than anyone else…

While I'm not suggesting we have the same level of talent on this team, the 05/06 Sabres were one game (and 4 starting defensemen injuries) away from meeting us in the Stanley Cup Finals. I'd bet most of us that remember believed that Carolina was the better matchup. The Sabres were better at what they did than anyone.

Given our personel, would any of us have a problem if the Oilers decided they wanted to play run and gun every night?

  84. DBO says:

any actual word on the presser? did they just announce Sillinger? If he can have the same impact as Peca, then I'm happy since he brought both horcoff and Stoll up a few points on the dot.

And to answer a previous question about why i would suggest Nilsson to the minors, it has more to do with money then anything. No one will pick him up, and it frees up $2 million under the cap, allowing us to sign Comrie and a guy like Betts for the same cost.

  85. Hockey Noob says:

DBO, yes the Sillinger announcement has been made. It's on the NHL website.

  86. kris says:

We have a pretty good 3rd line, checking line if we can ice our coaches and managers:

    Tambellini-Sillinger-Buchberger
    Lowe-Quinn

Oddly, the oilers.nhl.com site has Sillinger's bio up under coaches, but no announcement he was hired.

  87. Lord Bob says:

Sillinger. Good move. Not thinking about any other Mikes right now.

  88. doritogrande says:

    From the Oilers.com press release:

As a member of the Oilers Hockey Management Team, Sillinger will work closely with all Oiler draft picks in the junior, college and European ranks. He will also be working with Edmonton’s prospects in the AHL and ECHL.

So it's not Gagner or Andrew "Mendoza" Cogliano he'll be helping with faceoffs. Means great news for the likes of Riley Nash and Chris Vande Velde however.

  89. DBO says:

A few weeks in camp with Sillinger may be enough to at least give Cogs and gagner a boost on the dot. Can't hurt.

  90. rickibear says:

Coach: PA boy! Did you go to Comp.

  91. bookie says:

    Today's Edmonton Journal

Notwithstanding persistent rumours, the Oilers are not in negotiations with Mike Comrie and have no plans to sign him at this point, Tambellini said.

“Mike’s a good player,” he said of Comrie at an announcement Thursday about Telus’s new sponsorship of the Oilers. “No decisions have been made to add any player to our roster. We’ve got a full roster, we’ve got salary cap issues. Nothing’s been decided at this point.”

    Somebody is punking us

Maybe this is all a diversionary tactic, so that when the team trots out Malholtra and Betts and announces the trade of Ethan Moreau for a 7th round draft pick in 2014, they'll be able to create some true buzz. (This is immediately followed by the straight up Steve Staios for Dan Hamhuis trade, when Nashville's GM is quoted as saying they wanted the extra stability Staios' two contract years remaining brings, as opposed to Hamhuis being a UFA next summer).

    Dare to dream? Yeah…

  93. mc79hockey says:

Shorter Tambo: "My owner wants to do this even though I think it's nuts."

  94. Ribs says:

I sure hope Tambellini is BS'ing us. Otherwise I'd start to think that he has no idea what's going on with his own club. It seems pretty clear that someone from management has been talking with Comrie.

  95. Oilmaniac says:

Alternative theory: Tambs is gunning for the Oilers to get a contract filming "Lord of the Rings" sequels.

    Hahahaha,…

  96. raventalon40 says:

    Heatley-Comrie-Hemsky
    Moreau-Horcoff-Pisani
    Cogliano-Gagner-O'Sullivan
    jacques-Pouliot-Stortini

    I don't like this.

The best Oiler lineup features Horcoff on the 1st line and Heatley nowhere in it.

  97. Bruce says:

No time to read past the first few comments right now, but couldn't Pisani have meant "Mike [Sillinger] will help us"?

  98. Ribs says:

Who knows, Bruce. I'm assuming that's the deal.
Tencer didn't bother to give us any context to go on.

"Mike" could be just about anyone, really. Now if Pisani said "Duffbanger will help us"…Then we'd have something.

  99. Hockey Noob says:

Anyone else notice that Lowetide changed his blog subtitle a few days ago? It used to be "A Sense of Wonder." Now, it's "A Period of Transition."

Does this reflect the coaching staff transition?

  100. B.C.B. says:

I vote Detroit for a road trip: they have beers the size of my head for like $7 US. Oh and the sightlines are good. But then again, I would like to see the Oil win, this year.

  101. DeeDee says:

I'm just confused if we are supposed to keep booing him if he comes back, or does this make him good again?

In fact, its hard to keep the Boo List straight. Pronger, Smyth, Heatley, Comrie…

I think I am missing at least one, oh yeah, Nylander.

So hard to keep this stuff straight.

  102. flamingpavelbure says:

All this fuzz for… Mike Comrie? Really? Mike Comrie? LoL it's just… well i don't know, it makes it look like we're really desperate lol!

  103. Jonathan Willis says:

    Hockey Noob: Ownership, I'm thinking.

  104. shepso says:

@Dee Dee: Smyth doesn't get booed. All others you mentioned are perfectly acceptable, as is anyone wearing a Flames jersey on the streets of Edmonton and of course Brian Burke…But not Smyth. That mullet didn't want to leave and didn't do anything to disgrace the city or the team. He was a true warrior for the team through some really dark times and left it all on the ice. There is no need to hate Ryan Smyth for any reason as far as I am concerned.

  105. Travis Dakin says:

"there is no need to hate Ryan Smyth for any reason as far as I am concerned."

    Yes there is…. $100,000 worth.

    haha

  106. Doogie2K says:

Wow, in a race to the bottom, it's Montreal and Edmonton.

Yeah, and I cheer for both teams. Greeeeat. Montreal's shrimps are all overpaid, while Edmonton just has too many of them.

Fortunately, I just bought a Blackhawks Winter Classic Jersey at the new mall in Balzac today (they have a dedicated hockey store — I insisted my mom apply), so I'm fully equipped for bandwagon-jumping in case it all goes tits-up come March. ;)

I was scared as hell of that Buffalo team. I figured they'd have won in six if they'd made it.

  107. flamingpavelbure says:

To reply to the Montreal ''Shrimps'', the club in 2007-2008, wasn't really big, and it didn't really empeached them to win. Yes we did get smaller on Offense, but did we get rid of Physicial guys anyway? Kovalev, Koivu, Tanguay and Higgins, No absolutely not. And we did man up in D with Mara and Gill. Being Small isn't always a negative thing. A thing Oilers fan should learn to live with. Adapt your style to the team, not the opposite.

(Referring to the Western Conference still, Run and Gun should be better for this Oiler team)
