Flames at Oilers PS, G6/09-10

The Edmonton Oilers are slated to run a mostly-NHL lineup tonight against the Calgary Flames. It’s probably safe to say that any at-bats given to bubble boys from here on in means said players are under serious consideration for the final roster. Here are tonight’s projected lines and pairings:

  • Horcoff-Jacques-Hemsky: The top line auditions continue, although at this point the smart money would be on Dustin Penner returning (the Comrie-O’Sullivan chemistry probably sealed the deal). Jacques’ seems to have improved conditioning this fall and he certainly does have some skills.
  • Brule-Penner-Nilsson: Big game for Brule and Nilsson I’d think, if this line popped a couple of goals it might help the chances of Brule and Nilsson making the big club.
  • Cogliano-Moreau-Brennan: Interesting line here, Pisani would seem to be the obvious choice for the Brennan role. It’ll be a tough night if Brennan ends up being overwhelmed by the Flames’ veterans.
  • Comrie-O’Sullivan-Stone: I can see this line staying intact for opening night. Stone gives the line some grit and aggression, O’Sullivan has some experience in the NHL and Comrie can help an offense.
  • Souray-Gilbert: It’s a logical pairing if we assume Gilbert is the puck mover/guy who pinches and Souray is the stay-at-home guy until they need the Field Marshal.
  • Grebeshkov-Visnovsky: This has potentially hilarious possibilities. If Grebeshkov forgets the tinfoil hat and Lubo goes walkabout the Oilers might be looking on a few three-on-none’s going the other way.
  • Strudwick-Smid: I wonder if Strudwick is in any kind of trouble on this roster. They have Chorney on the roster currently and Strudwick might be vulnerable. Not likely, though.
  • Khabibulin: SO in his first game, make it two in a row?

  1. bookie says:

Replay looked like a fall actually. Sometimes its hard to tell without a good replay

  2. Woodguy says:

    Also,

    I really miss $1.3M/yr Glencross.

  3. bookie says:

Yes, there is no way that Smac makes this team. Makes you wonder why he was here last year really.

  4. Jonathan Willis says:

Well, the reffing hasn't been good, but that was a fair call.

  5. kris says:

"Cpt. Lou Albano on the big screen!"

    I'm still laughing at this.

  6. Woodguy says:

This Chris Lee ref is laughable.

If it were a regular season game I would need blood thinners.

  7. SK Oiler Fan says:

Idiots. How many examples does the ref have to give that he's calling it tight? Figure it F'in out!
PK's getting lots of ptactice anyway.

  8. kris says:

    Hemsky is a bad PK'er.

  9. Dennis says:

Initially, I thought the best thing about the 2nd period was hearing "Hot Dog" but then it looked like JFJ flattened Reghier.

Then we saw it was just Robyn falling down so, yes, "Hot Dog" was the highlight of the period.

  10. Oilmaniac says:

Rod is crying a bit much..
weak hooking call, but thats more a reflection of the leagues mandate to enforce that weak sauce..

  11. NBOilerFan says:

    Coach pb9617 said…
The Brule experiment should come to an end after tonight. Fella just chases the puck like

I'm a Brule supporter and I'll admit he hasn't shown much prior to this game in TC, but I think he has looked pretty damn good here tonight.

  12. spOILer says:

I don't know, I'd like to see the replays again. It did look like he got one right hand in hard and flush on Regehr's ugly mug and then they fell.

  13. Jonathan Willis says:

    NBOF:

In places I suppose, but he's looked pretty bad on a couple of shifts too.

  14. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Oilmaniac,
Rod is way way over the line tonight.
    Unprofessional, regardless of the circumstances.

  15. Woodguy says:

Then we saw it was just Robyn falling down so, yes, "Hot Dog" was the highlight of the period.

Damn. I was really happy when it looked like a right.

I am a huge Horcoff apologist, but dammit he can't handle a pass at all.

Someone get a bucket of chicken and take that curse off his sticks.

    Putting Smid/Struds together = bad
Putting Smid/Struds on ice with Hemsky/Horcoff = coach on glue

  16. doritogrande says:

I'm a Brule supporter and I'll admit he hasn't shown much prior to this game in TC, but I think he has looked pretty damn good here tonight.

Can we agree that Management's angle is that he's good because he hits people? Yes?

Problem is, he's bouncing off every player he attempts to hit because he simply isn't big enough to play this sort of game at the NHL level. He's not among the 14 best forwards for a balanced NHL roster. It's plain to see during the 6 preseason games so far.

That Management is desperate to hold on to him just because he's waiver elligible is an absolute fucking joke. It's Jani Rita's scenario all over again. How's he doing in Finland by the way?

  17. Oilman says:

After seeing the replay it looks like Jacques was trying to land a kidney shot and Reghers ear absorbed most of the punch.

  18. Oilmaniac says:

    Agreed SK,

Its only pre-season Rod!.. I feel for the guy, cus his job hasnt been getting easier over the last few years.. me thinks he is already toeing the line of giving up on this crew..

  19. HBomb says:

    Good thing or bad thing?

JF Jacques has been the best player on his line tonight.

Horcoff's having issues out there, but at least there's hustle. Hemsky just looks to be flat-out floating most of the time. Those two need to pick it up, stat.

  20. bookie says:

t's Jani Rita's scenario all over again. How's he doing in Finland by the way?

30 points in 58 games for Jokerit Helsinki

  21. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Woodguy,
Horc must bring Rum and smoke to Joeboo. Take fear from sticks.

  22. kris says:

    Yeah,

Brule is fast and he releases his shot fast, but he's not looking like an NHL'er. He needs to give up on the hits; he's not the new Peca.

I mean, it's a mystery. The kid has every tool he needs to succeed, but he doesn't seem to be doing it.

  23. doritogrande says:

JF Jacques has been the best player on his line tonight.

I wouldn't say best player. But he's easily in the top-3 with Penner and Visnovsky.

  24. bookie says:

JDD in net, is that bad?

  25. Jonathan Willis says:

Did anyone see that little play where Stone passed it into the feet of the defenceman (Bouwmeester) rather than to his linemate? At first I thought it was a mistake, but looking back, I think Stone did it on purpose so they could hit the off-balance defender.

Of course, that isn't exactly the Comrie/O'Sullivan wheelhouse.

  26. doritogrande says:

I've gotta say, I love the Metallica/Megadeth intro they've got going for each period, but you've gotta keep that going. Changing the song after just doesn't keep me as pumped as a fan.

For example, and Icecastles and Showerhead if you're lurking out there, Jump by Van Halen still get's me yelling "Ladies and Gentlemen, your WINNIPEG JETS!"

  27. Jonathan Willis says:

    Penner – Horcoff – Hemsky.

    Finally.

  28. Woodguy says:

    HORPENSKY STARTS THE FIRST!!!

    ALL CAPS TO DENOTE EXCITEMENT!!

  29. Yeti says:

Does JFJ have a game misconduct for his dubious hit?

  30. Jonathan Willis says:

Whatever. A high stick is a high stick, Rod.

  31. Woodguy says:

    Woodguy,
Horc must bring Rum and smoke to Joeboo. Take fear from sticks.

    Awesome.

I do think Horcoff's stick is closer to a cursed glove than a bat that fears curve balls.

  32. doritogrande says:

It takes Rod 2:30 of game time, and three breaks to finally announce that Deslauriers is in net.

    Is this normal?

  33. Woodguy says:

JDD in net, is that bad?

    Can't see it being good.

  34. Jonathan Willis says:

    Woodguy:

You were watching Khabibulin, yes ;)

  35. Coach pb9617 says:

Edmonton goalies should never leave the crease.

  36. kris says:

Moreau does nothing while Cogs gets abused.

Isn't he the toughness and the captain?

  37. Oilmaniac says:

    FKK! Moreau has NO GUTS…

Cogs gets head shotted again.. and
    and… and… nothing…

    Send that douche outa town…

  38. doritogrande says:

Phew. Jacques is back. Now Penner can go back to his proper spot.

    Wait…

  39. kris says:

Jacques shows why he doesn't belong on a scoring line.

    Refs save Jaffrey's life.

  40. Oilmaniac says:

I think i've found my goat for as long as he lasts this season…

  41. HBomb says:

Oilmaniac: you're late to the party. I am piloting the "Moreau sucks" bandwagon.

Yes, there will be cocktails served at all weekly meetings.

  42. Oilmaniac says:

    Haha.. V'rr Nicee…

  43. Coach pb9617 says:

Deslauriers is all calm and easy going. Khabibulin plays like he is using with Grebs.

    Fear.

    Fear.

  44. doritogrande says:

Deslauriers is quickly becoming one of my favourite Oilers. He's rarely out of position and has some damn good athleticism.

Really hoping he proves the trust Management has placed in him this season.

  45. bookie says:

and JDD can get some crazy Gumby action going.

  46. Jonathan Willis says:

BTW, over at ON they're calling JDD "Delorean".

    I'm a fan.

  47. doritogrande says:

    HAHAHA!

    Drink that beer Emokid!

  48. bookie says:

    Classy

  49. B.C.B. says:

I have to say I like Smid's skating. Now if he could use that great stride to skate towards someone and hit them I would be happier.

  50. PunjabiOil says:

dantencer: Deslauriers in for 3rd. Khabby not on the bench. Injured? Don't know. Either way, I'm told he isn't making the trip to Winnipeg tomorrow.

    _________

    Well done Steve.

  51. doritogrande says:

    4-3.

    We're not done yet.

  52. Jonathan Willis says:

    Comrie!

Anyone else notice how they keep using the low play on the PP? I'm optimistic that will continue.

  53. Woodguy says:

Good things happen when Penner stands in front of the net on the PP

  54. B.C.B. says:

what happen to the feed on nhl.com?

  55. Oilmaniac says:

All summer has prep'd me to look for a 'Penner on the ice for a PPG'.. haha..

  56. doritogrande says:

    Comrie (Penner, O'Sullivan)

  57. SK Oiler Fan says:

Never been a huge fan of JFJ, but tonight he has been what the Oilers missed all of last year. An A'Hole. (Tambo translation – tough to play against)
If he can keep Regher occupied most of the night he's done his job.

  58. bookie says:

So Khabibulin is broken, How did DD look as a backup?

  59. spOILer says:

    Keystone cops.

  60. Jonathan Willis says:

So, the only person I'm letting off the hook there is Moreau.

  61. doritogrande says:

Grebeshkov's acid is making its way around our defense.

Guess he passed Kindergarden after all.

  62. William says:

If Jacques didn't drop Regher in the fight, then that hit behind the net made up for it. And Penner doing great tonight. And then there's Strudwick…

  63. Oilmaniac says:

    oh my.. oh my…

time to figure out what else to do with the next ten minutes of life..

this one just got done-ugly styles..

  64. Woodguy says:

Moreau's man untouched on the rush.

    Not sticking up for Cogs.

Cut this piece of shit already.

  65. B.C.B. says:

Damn you gods of hockey: I lose the feed, the Oilers score, my hopes go up, and then it comes back about 3 seconds before the Flames score.

  66. Coach pb9617 says:

If this keeps up…you guys thought I was obnoxious about Penner LAST year.

Wait til they get a load of me…

  67. doritogrande says:

So Khabibulin is broken, How did DD look as a backup?

Paging Manny Legace, white courtesy phone.

  68. striatic says:

the only good thing about that goal was that there was nothing JDD could do about that crazy deflection of Smid's hands.

it looked like some ugly positioning on his part at first.

  69. godot10 says:

//If he can keep Regher occupied most of the night he's done his job.//

He can't keep Regehr occupied if he is on the 4th line, which is why you have to try him on the first line, though not on the power play.

  70. Jonathan Willis says:

    Manny Fernandez remains unsigned.

  71. Oilmaniac says:

    Woodguy,
If he didnt go half speed and actually strip the puck on a backcheck that fourth goal woulda never.. alas…

  72. Traktor says:

"If this keeps up…you guys thought I was obnoxious about Penner LAST year.

Wait til they get a load of me…"

    Hey look kids!

  73. spOILer says:

Stauffer and Philips are in pre-season form. Searching for names and stats like they're hungover from trying to outdrink Wes Montgomery at the Greenbrier last night.

  74. SK Oiler Fan says:

Didn't know that many highlights of Staios existed.

  75. Coach pb9617 says:

Paging Manny Legace, white courtesy phone.

    *SIGH*

  76. Yeti says:

He can't keep Regehr occupied if he is on the 4th line, which is why you have to try him on the first line, though not on the power play.

I don't know. The name Brad Winchester keeps coming to mind.

  77. Woodguy says:

    Woodguy,
If he didnt go half speed and actually strip the puck on a backcheck that fourth goal woulda never.. alas…

Between what you and JW I obviously missed the whole play, just saw enough of the replay to see Moreau's check put the puck in and thecaptain bang his stick on the boards.

What do they say about assuming?

Its thecaptainethanmoreau so I usually err to the side of douche.

  78. bookie says:

Sorry, did he just say Gretzky had a heart issue last night??

  79. bookie says:

Ok, found it on Google. Dave King had a heart issue, Grezky is just skipping training camp.

  80. godot10 says:

    King, not Gretzky.

Gretzky is cashing his paycheques and playing hookie from work.

  81. bookie says:

Keep in mind, its preseason and none of it matters, not one bit.

  82. SK Oiler Fan says:

This game seemed like six periods.

    In the Doghouse:
    Hemsky
    Horc
    Gilbert
    Studs
    Khabby

    Feel free to add…

  83. doritogrande says:

    In the Doghouse:
    Hemsky
    Horc
    Gilbert
    Studs
    Khabby

Definitely add Souray to that. Too many penalties.

  84. bookie says:

Did you guys know that American Beer and Canadian Beer have the same alcohol content, its just that the Americans measure beer alcohol content by weight whereas Canada and the rest of the world measure it by volume. So a 4% beer in the USA has equal alcohol content to a 5% Canadian beer.

Anyway, that's my commentary on this game. Preseason doesn't matter…

  85. spOILer says:

Brule and Cogs kick Horc's ass at the dot. Can't see that happening too often. O'Sullivan was 1 for 7.

  86. SK Oiler Fan says:

Dam, I wish Glencross was in blue.

  87. Oilmaniac says:

    HAHAHAHA,….

"Its thecaptainethanmoreau so I usually err to the side of douche."

    alright, cheers y'all..
    g'night..

  88. spOILer says:

Judging by his ice time tonight, Lubo is not 100% yet. Quinn really likes Gilbert though, sheesh. Over 27 minutes while Smid and Grebs get 16 and 19 minutes each. Of course, all the PKs don't help to cipher out that distribution.

  89. Woodguy says:

Stauffer just mentioned that Penner had the best GFON/60 on the Oilers last year on the post game show.

Didn't know Stauffer used advanced stats.

If he starts referring to them on a semi-regular basis, perhaps the luddite media in this town might start paying attention.

    Probably not.

  90. Jonathan Willis says:

Woodguy: Every so often, he does. Stauffer's an interesting sort.

  91. Ed says:

at least the pk looks better.

  92. Jonathan Willis says:

    Khabibulin "dehydrated", not injured: Quinn.

  93. Jonathan Willis says:

"When I look at our centres, I don't see a shut-down centre right now." – Pat Quinn.

So, Horcoff on the 1st line and PVP?

  94. Bar Qu says:

"Until the Oilers commit to their defensive game, they will continue to fight just to make the playoffs" – Mike Rogers FAN 960 Calgary.

Everyone in the league and around the league knows that it is goals against that is sinking the team, everyone that is except the Oilers management and players. They still think they need to score more.

Will hitting my head with a hammer make the pain stop?

  95. spOILer says:

Woodguy, back in the day Stauffer used to stump us with arcane baseball stats and stuff like who pitched a no-no in the 5th game of the 1957 World Series. He is a voracious reader when it comes to sports.

  96. spOILer says:

How man of us have been saying that all summer. Goals agaist is the issue and it was again tonight. And judging by Quinn's comments, it sounds like he can see the same issue.

It also sounds like LT's going to be right–there's going to be a trade.

    But damn you Manny Malhotra.

Quinn sounded quite happy with Brule's play tonight.

  97. Bar Qu says:

But spOiler, how much sledding uphill can Quinn do? I think he sees the problem the rest of the organisation (and players?) don't.

At this point I would simply be happy for Brule to be sent down in favour of Stone and then let the first few weeks of the season work themselves out. Good or horrific.

  98. Steve says:

Stauffer and Philips are in pre-season form. Searching for names and stats like they're hungover from trying to outdrink Wes Montgomery at the Greenbrier last night.

Didn't Wes Montgomery die a couple of years ago? Or did I make that up? I do that sometimes.

  99. spOILer says:

Steve– Yes, but I believe the Greenbrier died first. I sold my Cutty Sark stocks the next day.

Bar Qu– Brule showed courage, had active feet, was on the right side of the puck most of the time, but I can't fathom keeping another waterbug.

Goals against though is a much bigger problem than Creme Brule. Quinn called the defense out a bit tonight, but also wondered where he was going to find a two way centre out of this group.

  100. spOILer says:

I'm thinking back to the PP goal. IIRC, it was the 2nd unit that scored and PaddyO was on the point. Did he not play on the point for LA's 2nd PP too? Would that not have a negative effect on his much maligned shooting percentage?

To my eye he got back deep and supported the defense far better than any other centre tonight. Too bad he makes Cogliano look like a star on faceoffs.

Cool. JFJ's hit gets the kudos on Sportsnet's highlight roll.

  101. SK Oiler Fan says:

    From Sportsnet:
"I understand that not everyone of our older guys is going to be a leader. They may still be in the league because of what they can do and how they play but that doesn't mean they can lead. Right now they're just more concerned about themselves and nothing else," said Quinn.

If that isn't a dirct shot at the men wearing letters I don't know what is.
Staios and Moreau are in trouble. On and off the ice.

  102. spOILer says:

    SK

How do you know it's not directed at Vishnovsky, Horcoff, Khabibulin, Strudwick, etc?

  103. doritogrande says:

I think the one player that flew under the radar tonight (again) is Nilsson.

Dude put up solid, albeit vanilla effort tonight. Another assist leaves him at a point per game. And it wasn't like it was a fluke "pass to someone and let them do the rest" kind of assist either. He gained the zone with speed, cut back and found the trailer in Strudwick who in turn got the puck onto Penner's stick. Given the inconsistent season Nilsson just went through, I'd say there's nothing wrong with vanilla performances, because at least you know it's going to be consistent.

I think his spot among the top-14 is safe. And it's really hard to say that about other people at this point. For me, it's no longer a question of "who do we cut", it's now a question of "who deserves to be here the most". And when I (and I'm assuming others) believe that we don't have people in camp who deserve a spot on the team, this team seven kinds of screwed.

  104. doritogrande says:

If that isn't a dirct shot at the men wearing letters I don't know what is.
Staios and Moreau are in trouble. On and off the ice.

I take that completely the other way man. Hemsky (and possibly Lubo)just got served.

  105. DBO says:

Was at the game. hemsky looks totally disinterested this pre season. Very little jump, and he gets stripped of the puck every rush.

Quinn's comments after tha game seem to indicate that he doesn't see a "checking" line, and that he wants a big guy on every line. he mentioned Jacques, Brule, Penner and Stone as guys who are playing well. And while I do think staios has been bad, Struds is no better, and we'd need to sign a solid vet dman to take his place.

I begin to wonder what role Gagner will have, seeing as Cogliano has been better this pre season. Anyone think he may be shifted to wing, especially if Quinn wants an evergy line centered by brule?

  106. Jonathan Willis says:

Quinn defended both Horcoff and Hemsky in his presser.

  107. spOILer says:

He talked about Hemmer sitting for most of the first with the parade to the box… difficult to get his legs going, that sort of thing. And Hemmer did look a lot better in the third.

  108. spOILer says:

Dorito, Nilsson didn't look that bad to me either. But a body or two has to go.

  109. kris says:

Just to go back to the issue of who was most responsible for the SHG, Grebeshkov or Horcoff.

In his post game interview on oilers.nhl.com, Quinn blames the defenseman.

After viewing it again, so do I.

Of course, Horc.s play was brutal too, but Grebeshkov is the goat.

  110. Grog says:

Love to see Jacques bring it and play with an edge again tonight. I'm not sure that he can stick with the two guys that he was playing with, but it looks like he's starting to figure out how to open the toolbox.

On another preseason note, anyone else surprised that the blond ice scraper girl on the zamboni side hasn't been cut yet? It must be her hotness keeping her here because she looks like she's constantly on the verge of falling and she can barely lift the shovel. You'd think that being able to skate would be a pre-req for the job.

  111. Grog says:

Also, Quinn mentioned in post-game that Pouliot and Pisani were supposed to play Thurs vs Lighting. Any word on what's up with Pouliot?

  112. NBOilerFan says:

    doritogrande said…
Problem is, he's bouncing off every player he attempts to hit because he simply isn't big enough to play this sort of game at the NHL level. He's not among the 14 best forwards for a balanced NHL roster. It's plain to see during the 6 preseason games so far.

True, he is a bit undersized for the crash and bang role, however, at least he understands that what is required of him to earn a spot. And he is giving it an effort.

I'm not saying that Brule has earned a spot, he hasn't done enough to prove that, but I do think he played a good game last night.

IMO, neither Brule nor Pouliot has shown enough to make it on this club at this point. Certainly I'd give the edge to Pouliot at this point, but IMO, neither player is teh answer. A veteran defensive centerman is, which is what I thought Tambellini was intending to do when he signed Comrie.

Whether that means you waive both these players, or you trade one or both, whatever, but that is the answer.

Choosing Brule over Pouliot or vice versa is a mistake either way, IMO.

And for the reconrd, I agree that Stone has earned a spot out olf TC and if he doesn't get it, then this managment is full of shit. He has been twice the player Moreau has been.

  113. Master Lok says:

He has been twice the player Moreau has been.

    I don't recall Stone getting 8 PIM's per game…
