Flames at Oilers, G3, 09-10
Sometimes I say things out loud often enough that they become (to me) true. One of them is “there are probably 60 players in the AHL who could play in the NHL in a support role” and this season it looks like the Oilers are going to test the theory.
Ryan Stone and Jean-Francois Jacques have some NHL qualities and some things that grade out at below average. However, Pat Quinn decided in training camp that the team needed size and strength up front to protect the minute men and that meant playing time for the two gritty wingers.
Things are breaking right for both, as injuries to veteran forwards and bubble players means extended looks for them. Eventually I’d expect one or the other will be placed on waivers and either head to Springfield or another NHL city. Eventually one or both will end up having a Toby Petersen-style career: famous enough to get chance after chance in the NHL despite being about as good as 5-dozen AHL regulars.

Ales Hemsky is due. Baseball announcers used to say that about big league hitters who were in slumps. If we can agree that a MLB regular gets about 4.3 at-bats a game, then Hemsky is about 8 at-bats into his season with one rbi and very little to show for his efforts. I’d bet a lot of money on his having a big game in the next week or so and then settling in at a slightly-less-than-point-per-game pace before finding the range in a real way as we approach Christmas.
Having said that, the last team on planet earth I would pick for Ales Hemsky to have a breakout game against is the Calgary Flames. And if he does have a big game tonight, how much of the credit will we give to Dustin Penner?

Okay. That's just fucking ugly.
Dion Phaneuf wearing an oilers jersey….I'm not sleeping tonight.
Oh god, my dad just texted me saying its time for Horcoff to move on. Not another one. Not my dad. Ferfucksakes.
Oh god, my dad just texted me saying its time for Horcoff to move on. Not another one. Not my dad. Ferfucksakes.
I'm more surprised that your dad can text than what followed.
Seriously, were you the high-school baby?
Ryan Stone is an awesome hitter.
Not exactly an awesome hockey player, but he'll do.
You know it's a good hit when you break your opponent's stick in half in the process.
@NBOilerfan,
No way the SNWest game will all be blacked out. I think they just messed up the feeds. The BUF/PHX game was showing on two channels at once (both were BUF feeds), which isn't normal. One of those channels (530 for me) was supposed to show the EDM game. No dice.
I watched all games last year between CAL/EDM, VAN/EDM that were on SNW. Should be fine in my opinion. Bummer for tonight though.
Seriously, were you the high-school baby?
Not sure I follow. Then again, there was no such thing as texting yet when I was in high school.
But yeah, my dad started texting specifically as a way for us to chat back and forth during Oilers games since we've lived in different provinces for years. Kinda fun actually… until he brings up the Horcoff crap.
Penner was a force on that PK. And in some TSN studio, Mac T is watching this game with smoke coming out of his ears.
(Sitting on his piles of money.)
F.U.C.K.
That's what happens when you don't win face-offs.
Not sure I follow.
Let's try this again. What if I reference Family Guy's "Prom-night dumpster baby" skit?
My dad can barely answer his cell phone, let alone text. Got a real pretty onion on his belt though. It was the style back in his day.
Penner was a force on that PK. And in some TSN studio, Mac T is watching this game with smoke coming out of his ears.
I don't know why MacT would be fuming for that. He used Penner extensively on the PK to start last season.
Bad feeling about this going into the third.
Hope it's not anything serious for Souray.
Dang, I was a little distracted on the Flames goal, but I thought I at least saw number 10 on the ice?
Sportsnet Ontario/Toronto games are always blacked out in Ottawa.
Sportsnet Pacific/West Edmonton/Calgary/Vancouver games are blacked out typically when Sportsnet East has an Ottawa game scheduled for that night.
For some unknown reason, I get Ccnter Ice channels 1 through 9 on my Bell TV VDSL service gratis, last year and this year. last year and this year, I could never get CI channel 10. The Edmonton/Calgary game is on CI channel 10 tonight, so I can't get it, but since I don't pay for the service, I can't exactly call and complain.
Mild concussion for Souray.
Wouldn't appear he'll be out for long, but certainly not tonight.
Given past history, this team would report a decapitation as a "mild concussion".
Scott Reynolds said…
I don't know why MacT would be fuming for that. He used Penner extensively on the PK to start last season.
Only because Penner never looked as good on last year's highly effective PK as he has tonight. That said, I know we're looking at an infinitesimally small sample size.
And Scott Hartnell bites Kris Letang.
LOL! The furious redhead strikes again!
Smytty with 1G, 1A, and +3 in the 1st.
Man I miss that guy in Oiler silks.
Dreger with a prediciton that he'll make Team Canada. I'm not counting him out.
@ Godot… yea, the Sportsnet_W chaneels is usually blacked out here in NB as well. But the CI blackouts are just about protecting local teams feeds. So games like teh Ottawa game tonight was blacked out in my area to forse us to watch it on the sportsnet feed. But that is only about local feeds. No way that Edmonton games should be blacked out in CI. This is what it says on their homepage…
WHY ARE THERE BLACKOUTS?
Blackout restrictions exist to protect the local television telecasters of each NHL game in the local markets of the teams. Blackouts are not based on arena sell-outs. Keep in mind that blackout policies and restrictions are different for every sports package that your system may carry. (Remember, if you ONLY want to watch your home team, then NHL CENTER ICE should not be purchased. NHL CENTER ICE is designed for the NHL fan who wants to see NHL games other than just those which involve their local team).
But good to know about the channel #10 thing… perhaps that ties into what Thrillho said about the feed just being unavailable tonight as some type of glitch (or so we hope).
GD: so you've been getting it for free all this time?:)
Nice!
My buddy has Bell TV but he doesn't have CI so I'm not sure how those folks are with troubleshooting. I know that early on, BEV were idiots and I'd be on the phone just railing them – I remember a Car vs Oil game in particular that was delayed and had me fuming – but for the last couple of years, if I don't see the feed immeadiately, I'll just click on an online feed and wait for them to smarten up.
As far as Eastlink, my Mom uses their service back home and I've had some problems with them. The level of red tape is demoralizing.
My whole problem with the Iginla play/penalty is it looked like he made a dangerous play by sticking his stick in 44's skates and then when Souray goes down, Iginla pulls his old "I'm Iginla so I can't do anything wrong" act.
Later on, he has to awnser the call from one of the only guys in the league who's a bigger tomato can than he is: thecaptainethanmoreau.
Anyway, I have the Oilers winning the chance battle 15-12 after 40 min and the Flames have done fuckall since the first 16 min of the first period. I think the Oil will be fine if they stay out of the box though I am looking forward to seeing when and if Quinn pares down to nine forwards and which three guys don't make the cut.
Lastly, here's what I see about Khabby so far. He doesn't get pulled around the net and he's very smooth and poised and is apt to make the spectacular save.
The rebound control is another can of worms however.
Who cut Khabeeb's tether?
It's kinda of retarded to block the games for the East.
a good 90-95% of the time, the Habs either, finished theyr game when the Oildrop's game begin, or they simply don't play the same day.
It's just retarded.
You can blackout simultanous games… but when it's not… cmon who is it serving? I wanna watch the Oilers on tv God damit!
I thought for a moment we'd see Smid trick Phaneuf into fighting. That could have been good.
goddamnit.
What's with all these tip ins. Every f'in goal these guys score is a deflection!
Nigel Dawes picked up off of waivers. The Flames have been very good at picking up useful and cheap 2nd-4th line forwards.
There's no denying Vis ice time now.
JFJ doing his job tonight. He's been in Regher's, Iginala, and Boumeester face the last 3 shifts
Are the Oilers even trying to maintain control of the puck moving into the attacking zone? It seems as soon as they are in the neutral zone, they just start casually poking it ahead six feet in front of their bodies as if they think it's a foregone conclusion that they'll be stripped of the puck.
I think Visnovski is back. Didn't take as long as I thought it would. He's all over the ice tonight.
Great pace to the third period.
I'm going to be a little miffed if we're still running 4 lines after this break though. Seems to me the purpose of rolling 4 is that in the third period, when we need that next goal, our scorers still have what's needed in the tank. This should be the time where we drop Stone, Jacques and Stortini to the bench and let our offense fly.
Being the first season that Bell is providing CI (and considering less then 2 months ago they were telling me they weren't going to be offering it) there will definitely be a steep learning curve.
Oilers avoiding the slot like the Flames have a 25 foot wide piece of plexiglass in front of the goal.
I think Visnovski is back. Didn't take as long as I thought it would. He's all over the ice tonight.
I was going to make a snide comment that he's been our best forward tonight, but he's actually had a (for him) pretty responsible D-game tonight too. Couple spooky mistakes, but he's recovered well from them. Defeintely one of the three stars tonight.
Fuckin Hemsky scores!
FINALLY!!!!!!!
all started with the initial shot from #10.
That's three straight shifts where dump and chase has worked well for the first line.
Milliseconds after typing that slot comment Hemsky goes(to the slot) and scores. LOL
You know what, I've been as dismissive of Jacques as anybody but Bouw let Jacques win that race because he was sick of getting hit. Credit where due and all.
Great play by JFJ. Great, dump, retrieval, and then straight to the net to distract two flames while Hemmer taps it in the empty net. He's had a bunch of good shifts in a row now.
And Cogliano seems inspired by Comrie
Quinn matching the Horcoff line against Iginla throughout the game.
Jacques didn't get an assist on the play, but I have to give him credit there.
A couple of more games and Jacques is in the record books for most games played in the NHL by a forward and scoring no more than a single point.
Quinn matching the Horcoff line against Iginla throughout the game.
Are you sure? Seems to me they've been out against Gagner a hell of a lot.
Are you sure? Seems to me they've been out against Gagner a hell of a lot.
And quite often this has happened on a faceoff. I think it's much more likely that the PvP is the matchup Sutter is trying to get.
Impressive game by Brule tonight.
The 4th line out against the 1st in the last three minutes!
Watching on the PVR now, so this comment is a little behind…that fucking asshole Regher! Running for cover against 22 and 33, but as soon as he has 89 in the corner allasudden he's a fucking tough guy.
Douche bag.
Calgary PP was on fire until they had to face the legendary Oilers PK. Boo-ya.
FUCK!
Just fucking knew it.
Tipped again……..
NO. FUCKING. WAY.
I guess we kept Roli after all.
Was just going to say if another deflection goes in my laptop will bounce off my screen
Should read 22 and 32.
Caught up now.
OTC doesn't trust 91 and 19 in their own zone.
YOU ARE FUCKING KIDDING ME! 1 second left!?!?
Are you fuckin kidding me!
Dennis – awesome tale of woe my friend, all we need is a reference to an exgirlfriend sleeping with a fat guy and it would be just like old times
So – and I know this isn't the reason the Flames scored – why in the heck would Quinn throw Strudwick (Strudwick!) out after a time out for the last thirty seconds of a game.
It's close, but it will count
That's touched at the height of Gilbert's head for fucks sakes!
Unfuckinbelievable
Un-fucking-believeable!
please tell me no goal
shit… its good.
fuck i hate the flames.
Yeah, but remember Gilbert is only 3 feet tall.
The Oilers failed to protect the puck (Moreau) in the offensive zone, and the turnover lead to a rush the other way.
And Hemsky should have been able to put it into the open net 30 seconds earlier. Didn't play it very well, skated right into the D-man at the red line.
Need to buckle down mental-wize and dig deep to get the win here.
Attaboy Jason!
OK, got the gift power play in overtime, cash it in…
Oh good Christ, this will be sweet justice to win on the PP. Too bad Calgary will get at least a point no matter what, but then again, so do we.
People that made bad decisions to start overtime relating to Jason Strudwick: Pat Quinn and Mark Giordano.
which team would you give the edge to in a shootout?
Ooooh, that was close.
Horrible PP, no traffic whatsoever.
Another PP fails us!
If the Oilers lose this extra point, it's all on Moreau.
Scott, you are aware there's only 5 D available right?
If the Oilers lose this extra point, it's all on Moreau.
In fairness, if they loose at this point, it's because Kipper was dead on his game in OT.
what is with the Strudwick love in OT
Not a good dump by Penner. Need to rag it for a change
If we blow it vs. Calgary within a minute left again I'm gonna break something.
Alright, let's get 'em in the shootout.
There's only 4 D. Visnovsky looks like another forward tonight.
The Oilers are probably the worst team in hockey to hold onto a lead late in the third period.
Colorado twice last year. SJ in the season opener in 2007. Calgary last year. Calgary today.
Rick, for the sake of your furniture, I hope so.
If the Oilers lose this extra point, it's all on Moreau.
This is silly. You're blaming the tying goal on him for a pass into the slot to a teammate while in the offensive zone. There was a lot going on after that you know. And given there's still a chance that they win I don't see how the potential final goal is his fault just because ragging on the captain is cool.
Scott, you are aware there's only 5 D available right?
Yep. How many times do we normally see the 5-6 dmen in OT on other teams? How many times after a timeout with 30 seconds left in the 3rd?
I'm a bit confused on POS in the shootout… he shoots a lot, but does he have tricks we never see in games?
I thinkthe books out on Gags. Make him make his move or shot a little earlier than he wants
Wow. POS, What a release!
Alright O'Sullivan! nice one.
Need a big stop here, Khaby.
POS fired and I thought wtf was that? Crappy. Then… it was in the net! I know nothing about hockey.
Shit. That Jokinen shot's in.
FFS! Poor Khabby
Will some take the horseshoe out of their ass please?
Flames have next to nobody that scores on the shootout with consistency but the Bulin wall has other plans.
If Hemmer fans, it's in.
Should have fanned on it.
Ok. Who do we blame this time?
I need blood.
Ugh. Did we expect any kind of break vs. Calgary?
I've heard of gift-wrapping points for opponents, but this is rediculous.
Jes#s H Chri#t. What a punch in the nuts. Boys deserved better.
I Like Martine's outfit though.
Talk about crap luck tonight. That's all there is to it. The boys played well, but they got the crap end of the stick tonight.
Flames look a better team. The kind of team that scores goals in the dying seconds of periods.
It's just the way it is.
On the tying goal – the forwards up high simply stopped skating and didn't challenge the point shot – like they were standing there waiting for the horn to go.
I wouldn't want to get in Quinn's way right now. The paint will be peeling of them there walls for sure.
Someone clarify the shootout rules for me. Jokinen's shot hits the side of the net, then Khabi's pad and deflects in the net. Shouldn't the puck have been dead as soon as it hit the side of the net???
So… our captain shows once again how fucking stupid he plays this game. This man does not want to show leadership with his head. Faceoff in their end… with 28 seconds left he is all alone in the corner with the puck… does he rag it and hold it up against the boards to kill the clock? Nope, not this mental fucking midget… he tries to centre it for some reason, it hits a skate and out breaks Calgary… 25 seconds later it's in our net. This guy baffles me time and time again. He doesn't get it, never has and never will.
I fucking hate the Flames.
How many lucky breaks, high stick tip-ins and just general good luck can those pieces of shit get??
Bourque's stick was above the bar.
"Flames look a better team. The kind of team that scores goals in the dying seconds of periods.
It's just the way it is."
please…
At least they're raking him over the coals on the post game show. Doesn't do much good now.
You're blaming the tying goal on him for a pass into the slot to a teammate while in the offensive zone.
Moreau's role at that point was to eat up the time, and prevent a goal. Instead of continuing cycling or dumping the puck in the corner, he turned the puck over which lead to the rush.
Mistakes all around though, I agree.
Just another crushing loss to the Flames.
Jes#s H Chri#t. What a punch in the nuts. Boys deserved better.
Calgary: 0 for 4 on the PP despite 7 shots and multiple glorious chances.
Edmonton: 1 for 3 on the PP and 1 goal on 3 shots. PP looks awful.
EV shots in regulation: 20-17 for Calgary
EV Corsi: +3 Calgary
Full disclosure, I'm a Calgary fan, but I have to say I think Edmonton was lucky to get a point tonight.
"The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and
once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can be
scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the
goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the
goal)"
(part of rule 25.2)
another note, when did they add this?
"The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360°
turn as he approaches the goal, shall be permitted as this involves
continuous motion."
You would say that. Now take your horseshoe and trot off.
Bourque's stick was above the bar.
I think this is pretty difficult to determine even on the review. Pretty sure the video guys just went with the call on the ice.
EV shots in regulation: 20-17 for Calgary
EV Corsi: +3 Calgary
Full disclosure, I'm a Calgary fan, but I have to say I think Edmonton was lucky to get a point tonight.
I think this is pretty unfair. Edmonton played with the lead for the vast majority of the game which, generally, leads to the trailing team generating better Corsi numbers. I don't begrudge Calgary the win but if there was a team that got lucky I'll take the one that tied the game with less than 2 seconds to go.
RO,
I have a little saying for you that involves sex and travel.
Can you guess what it is?
"The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and

scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the

(part of rule 25.2)
I understand when the puck deflects off the post or crossbar. But when the puck deflects off the side of the net, that means the the puck wasn't "in motion towards the opponent's goal line"…it had already crossed it! The puck should have been dead at that point.
Fair enough. I could start a debate on who had more sustained zone pressure but that we probably wouldn't be able to come to an agreement.
Watched the replay of Bourque's goal about 10 times in slow month on PVR.
His stick is above Gilbert's crest, which is about 6" above the bar.
High quality replay officials.
Also,
Clarekstein, agreed. I would love to hear 18's internal dialogue. Something. watch me, look at me, I'm so good, ARGH where's my team mates?? Why am I the only good player on this team???
Hemsky has to bury the open net from the center line though… At least get it deep.
have a little saying for you that involves sex and travel.
Can you guess what it is?
Go fuck a donkey?
Dorito close.
If you ever seen Smokey & The Bandit, remember what Burt Reynolds told Buford Justice after Buford told him he was going to hang him.
I would have liked this game better if the Oilers had Won!
Big thoughts for the day.
The way I saw it and then a note for Pat, etc all
http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=3221
Pat: I don't remember telling the story you referenced but if you say I did, then it must be true:)
As for the game, it was somewhat predictable that the Oilers would sag in the third given they were missing two of their usual top 5 D in terms of EVTOI; 24 was already out and then 44 goes down as well. But for a long time the Oilers were doing a great job so good for them.
The good news is that the Oilers can be fun to root for in the offensive zone. 22 and 32 are out to lean on people and so is 46 and we can bring some pressure and now guys are even going to the net and I, for one, welcome our new net presence overlords!;)
The bad news is we're still somewhat of a mess in our own zone and some horses will need to be broken and others just aren't breakable.
Regarding the 3-3 goal, I'm not going to totally lay the boots to 18 for his O zone decision but it's hard to argue that he shouldn't have stuck the puck in the corner and then stuck it onto the wall with his skate.
Also, yes, 83 has to make a better decision than the one he made as well. I was hoping he'd chose an alley-opp and try and run it down and, by and large, I don't know why more guys don't use the flip as a way to make the puck leisurely change zones and thus let their own guys acclimate to their situations.
Janne Niinimaa used to do it occasionally and I loved it every time.
Just in from my hockey pool, watched the game at times on the big screen. As a Cards fan and an Oilers fan, I'm almost beside myself. Both games were a simple routine play away from being won, and disaster ensued at the last possible moment … twice. It was like having Archie (the Stomper) Gouldie give me two of his best shots, one boot in each nut. Two horrendous losses in a row, just days after the season-opening disaster.
I'm beyond swearing at the culprits or the referees or the bad guys or the hockey/baseball gods, I'm just feeling whipped. Like I never want to watch another fucking game of any description for a year.
In Hemsky's defense, I think he was trying to skate the puck out to center ice. Still, though, too many turnovers in the neutral zone from him tonight.
I'm not going to blame Moreau for that last play. That's a hindsight thing and he had a whale of a game otherwise. He knows better than to make that play, and I don't think we'll see it from him again.
The boys are playing well, right? I think once Khabi settles down a smidgen they'll get on a roll.
Horcoff is fucking garbage.
5.5 million for 6 more years.
This man doesn't have an ounce of offensive savvy or skill in him.
