Oilers at Flames, G10, 09-10

This is Frank Mahovlich. The Big M. Mahovlich was a unique combination of size, power and speed and easily one of the finest players of his era. Howie Meeker loved him, saying Mahovlich played the game as it should be played (as a young man, the Big M would race down the ice, belt the puck carrier, grab the puck, skate for a while, get belted, get back up and do the same thing over again) and until the Leafs traded him Frank Mahovlich was pretty much adored by English Canada.

They used to say “don’t wake up Mahovlich” because the best you could hope for is that the big man would become uninvolved , and that drove his coach (the redoubtable Punch Imlach) crazy. Imlach was an ass, cruel, nasty, vicious and small-minded. He would mispronounce Frank’s name on purpose to the media (“I didn’t like Mala-hov-ich’s game tonight”) and several accounts have the coach scheduling two-a-day’s so that the big M had to stay in the city between practices.

When they traded Frank Mahovlich, all the air left the Toronto Maple Leafs. They’d won the Stanley in spring 1967, but Frank had some ulcer/stomach problems and ended up in the hospital so Punch traded his ass to Detroit. English Canada was stunned, and many have never forgiven the Leafs for trading him.

When people compare a player–any player–to Frank Mahovlich, it should be considered an extreme compliment. His name is on the Stanley 6 times, and his most impressive playoff probably came with the Habs in 1971 (huge offensive spring, 14 goals in 20 games with 11 of the markers coming at even strength). His 533 goals rank him 30th all-time, although 21 of those 30 came in the following (and more offensive) era’s. Frank Mahovlich would have to rank as one of the all-time best left wingers, behind Bobby Hull, Ted Lindsay and just a very few from the years since he passed from the game (he tried a comeback with Detroit in 1979 but retired October 7th of that year).

Dustin Penner is one of the league’s leading scorers. He’s tied for 4th in goals and points, and hockey-reference says he’s 3rd in the entire league in goals created (behind Ovechkin and Kopitar). As an Oiler fan, it’s taking me some time to adjust to his impact on the ice this season–this is not Craig MacTavish’s Dustin Penner–but it is as deligthful as it is surprising to see Dustin Penner have this kind of success.

You could write a book.

The Oilers are winning but so is everyone else in the Western Conference. As day breaks the Flames and Oilers are tied for 2nd in the division behind the bizarro Avalanche and in terms of actual conference points both Calgary and Edmonton also rank in a 2nd place tie in terms of total points.

How long before I apologize to Kevin Lowe for all the venom over the Penner signing? Let’s start with Dustin Penner first and see how long that takes. If he can play at this level in even half the games this season the Oilers will have one of the very best LW’s in the game.

Time to work on a nickname, methinks. Sour Patch Kid doesn’t make it. How about Dustincredible? No. I think we need to call him Dustin Nath.

  1. Oilmaniac says:

    Thanks Steve,
    thanks for the reminder..

  2. Icecastles says:

RO – in that case, I apologize. I know better than to argue with someone who cheers for a team that thinks Phaneuf is Norris material. ;)

  3. Traktor says:

I think we should call 27 MacTavish because MacT is 100% responsible for the player Penner is today (shakes head emoticon).

Has Lubo always looked this good or was I blind last year?

  4. R O says:

I'm assuming you think Regehr should have been kicked out of the league by now RO? I mean, he's tried to end Hemsky's career multiple times from behind on violent hits…. if that's an awful play by Stortini, Regehr should have had a life time ban by now.

Some of Regehr's hits are dirty. Happy?

This is about Iginla and in this instance I think Stortini is in the wrong.

  5. pboy says:

RO: And how did Stortini get cut? That's a penalty too, isn't it?

  6. PDO says:

Has Lubo always looked this good or was I blind last year?

He was team MVP until he was hurt last season. He's been brilliant since Day 1 here.

  7. hunter1909 says:

Lubo was this good the rest of team blew.

  8. kris says:

Cross checking a guy from behind or breaking his ankle with a slash is not being a pussy. It's tough.

Especially since if you cheapshot guys, they're going to do it back.

Seriously, it takes as much courage as hugging out a fight with a guy who's roughly the same size as you while you're both on skates.

But this is no time to debate fighting and cheapshots. I'm willing to concede any of it. Just rambling about the uselesness of fights.

  9. Black Dog says:

    Good period.

I'm ready to admit it. There's going to be some down periods this season but considering the guys who are out of the lineup I think that this club is better than I expected. 89, 27, 5 are different players. 46 is becoming a guy that they can use on a more regular basis.

    Its nice to see.

Notice that Cogliano was right in there in the scrum?

A couple of big wingers like Bourque and Glencross would be nice additions down the road but this team is starting to look like they may finally be trending upward.

Cue the Flames rout now. ;)

  10. Dennis says:

First off, that was just a dandy play by 46 to end the period; just dandy!

Iginla clips him and doesn't get caught; but he does get caught admiring his pass and 46 flattens him.

    Other stuff:

    - brutal period by 77. Brutal

    - I can't understand how Bourque can crosscheck 37 in that manner and not get dinged for it.

    - 33 got school early but came back enough to only lose by a slight decision. Both sluggers can surely take a punch, though.

    - 5 and 27 are absolutely feeling it. I can't think of a better way to describe it.

    - 43's being mixed in on the blue and 22's been replaced by 46 on the third line. I'd really like to see us roll with three lines come the third and have 13 replace 18 up with 10-19.

    - timid period by 49 which leads me to believe that he still isn't up to speed from his injury.

    - a couple of sweet plays from 71 where he stepped up from the blue and broke up plays.

  11. Icecastles says:

I don't wanna become the Canucks… can't help it, always hated guys who hide behind visors and are just pussies in general.

Couldn't agree more. That's the reason I almost (almost!) cheered for Toronto against Vancouver…. they're a team that absolutely fails to get the distinction between playing tough/gritty (crusty?) and just cowardly and dirty. Edmonton is a classy team and this year, seems to know how to play with crust. I wouldn't give that up for anything… unless I was giving it up to see Boogard, Phaneuf, Regehr and Tootoo in the hospital. ;)

  12. R O says:

RO: And how did Stortini get cut? That's a penalty too, isn't it?

Different issue. That's a missed call.

He was called for roughing. Which implies that they called it for his retaliation against Stortini. As such, they should have seen the Stortini hit in the first place.

  13. kinger says:

This is about Iginla and in this instance I think Stortini is in the wrong.

And how would you like to support this argument? The only plausible argument I can see is that the hit was late, which it wasn't.

  14. kris says:

Nilsson is being idiotic on the PP.

  15. Steve says:

He was called for roughing. Which implies that they called it for his retaliation against Stortini. As such, they should have seen the Stortini hit in the first place.

They did, and reacted to it appropriately. Following through on a guy after he dumps the puck isn't a penalty. Punching a guy is.

  16. Icecastles says:

they should have seen the Stortini hit in the first place.

They probably did. Which is how they knew it was a legal hit.

  17. PDO says:

Has Calgary scored a goal against us this season that didn't involve a ridiculous play?

  18. Icecastles says:

Not much a fan of this Renée Dork fellow. Or whatever his name is. :( Why were there two Flames behind the net with the puck and no Oilers?

  19. Black Dog says:

    I'll go now.

  20. Icecastles says:

    Fuck me.

  21. Steve says:

It's okay, they're one goal away from the Most Dangerous Lead in Hockey.

  22. kinger says:

    Le sigh.

  23. PDO says:

Did that go in off his leg?

  24. kris says:

This is why we need more "actual NHL'ers"

Calagary's only paying these guys like 1MM each.

Nilsson's making 2MM and he looks like a junior player in comparison.

  25. Icecastles says:

Gilbert needs a conditioning stint in the press box.

And JDD REALLY needs to be getting one of these starts agains Calgary. He's been exceptional against the Flames, and he's going to end up rusty if they don't play him once in a while. I know Khabi's been mostly good, but I'm terrified of them burning up Khabibulin they way they did Roli.

  26. Woodguy says:

77-37 getting killed on every shift.

For Christsake at least get in front of your man and stop just reaching with your stick.

  27. kris says:

Did 37-77 start out terribly last year too.

I seem to remember they did.

  28. Black Dog says:

I tell you a guy they should pick up is Ponikorovsky from the Leafs.

Big LW, can PK, 20 goals a year, always a plus player, plays the toughs, he's UFA so likely the cost would be reasonable

    He played for Quinn too.

  29. Icecastles says:

Did 37-77 start out terribly last year too.

Yeah but it was okay last year because points in the first two months of the season aren't worth as much.

  30. Steve says:

I tell you a guy they should pick up is Ponikorovsky from the Leafs.

Big LW, can PK, 20 goals a year, always a plus player, plays the toughs, he's UFA so likely the cost would be reasonable

Plus I'd feel less dirty about always having him in my fantasy league.

  31. Black Dog says:

37/77 have never played well together imo, last season 37 played with Lubo and 77 played with Souray, that is when they had their most success.

  32. kris says:

Tough to win when you're running the likes of Nilsson, Cogliano, and Strudwick against Iginla.

  33. RiversQ says:

The Flames are a really bad matchup for the Oilers. They skate too well to be beat to the puck regularly and they're too big for the Oilers' small forwards. They just got ragdolled on the two 2nd period goals.

  34. Icecastles says:

Is it a good thing that 37 will be off the ice for 2 minutes? (God I hope it's a fill 2 minutes).

For all of our depth on D, it's amazing how quickly you can be down to basically 71 and 5 as D you feel safe with.

  35. kinger says:

    What the fuck?

Did his stick break or did he just toss it away to draw a call?

  36. PDO says:

    That was a high stick…

  37. Steve says:

I believe this is Penner's cue to get five points.

  38. Black Dog says:

    Aha! He took the bait!

LT – ban the Leaf lover! ;)

He's a pretty good player, could stand to be more physical but play him Horc and Pisani or O'Sullivan and you'd have a nice tough minutes line.

  39. kris says:

    Not a high stick IMO.

  40. PDO says:

I'm going to be pretty pissed off if the Flames have a second goal given to them by the refs…

  41. Icecastles says:

Nope. Sadly, that looked like a pretty legit goal. Sigh. Dont' know that Edmonton's quite good enough to have another comeback tonight like they did against CBJ.

  42. R O says:

    Looks high to me too.

  43. Woodguy says:

That two goals the Flames got this year against the Oilers with an illegal tip.

  44. PDO says:

The entire blade was above the crossbar, and it hit the blade.

That's two goals the officials have given the Flames.

  45. kinger says:

Why doesn't the (bush league) NHL have a camera that sits at the cross bar level?

  46. kris says:

    Not even close to illegal.

  47. Lowetide says:

    This is like having diarrhea.

  48. PDO says:

    It's crossbar, not shoulder.

Part of his shaft was clearly above the bar, and it hit his blade.

    Thus, illegal.

  49. Steve says:

    Christ, we're terrible.

  50. PDO says:

If you can't beat 'em, beat 'em up.

I'd love to see someone take a run at Iginla.

  51. RiversQ says:

That looked like a good goal to me. Too hard to conclusively deny it.

Oilers are a little lost right now.

71 is an awesome player. He does so many things well. He started a little slow in the first three games, but he's been great since.

  52. Woodguy says:

    Now McCreary calls cosschecking?

He was 2 f=€«&ing feet from Bourque on their first goal, and now he calls that from 100 feet away?

  53. Icecastles says:

Is there a resource anywhere that tracks how how many goals are scored off rebounds?

  54. Lowetide says:

Well that's just a terrific save.

  55. PDO says:

Have the Oilers had a single scoring chance this period?

  56. PDO says:

    Atta boy Laddy.

  57. Lowetide says:

If Laddy came to my house I'd give him some beer.

  58. Black Dog says:

The Oilers are missing some depth up front and on the back end so they're getting exposed, this is where Sutter deserves credit and Lowe fell short so often.

Dawes, Bourque, Glencross – guys picked up for nothing and paid little and they're pretty quality

  59. Garth says:

I'm beginning to think that Smid is my favourite player in the NHL.

  60. PDO says:

Aaron Johnson should be getting 5 and a game for that, something tells me he gets two.

  61. kris says:

Jacques will be a good 4th liner.

  62. RiversQ says:

Regehr has seen some game tape on Penner. Question for the third – will Penner get the best of him on a 3rd period rush?

  63. pboy says:

If the TSN ticker says that the Oilers have place Steve Macintyre and Robert Nilsson on waivers and have called up Liam Reddox from Springfield tomorrow morning, I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

This reffing is just fucking horrible tonight.

Nice work by Laddy Pronger there.

  64. Icecastles says:

And the feed dies just as Smid throws his first punch. Fucking hell. Please tell me Smid left buddy's eyeball on the ice.

  65. doritogrande says:

Giordano's a pussy. Take your lid off if the other obliges you.

  66. kris says:

Absolutely right. Hopefully Tamb. is watching this game.

  67. Dakin says:

Well done Ladi ad JFJ. keep it going boys.

  68. Lowetide says:

BDHS: That's something I think Tambellini might be better on. He seems to be flushing contracts so the good ones don't get sent away every summer (Hejda, Glencross).

  69. Steve says:

That play by Vish was neither meat nor potatoes.

  70. kris says:

  71. PDO says:

Crosscheck to the head only gets you 2 minutes.

The Oilers are being thoroughly outplayed, but it doesn't help they're playing against the Flames and the Stripes.

  72. Icecastles says:

    Dustin thefucking Penner!!! Woooooo!!!!

  73. kris says:

Let me take my gong back.

  74. pboy says:

    So fetch!!!

  75. Garth says:

I'm beginning to think that Penner is my second favourite player in the NHL.

  76. doritogrande says:

    Dustin fucking Penner.

  77. Icecastles says:

2 points because they put the puck AND the Gagner in the net.

  78. kris says:

    The Big P!!!!

The Big P streams one into the net.

  79. Black Dog says:

If Laddy came to my house I might have to give him some beer and let him have sex with my wife. Or my dog. Or me.

    Penner too.

  80. PDO says:

    Hey, Jokinen is playing!

  81. Woodguy says:

22 still snakebite on a great tip.

These Oilers are not out of a game down 2 with a period to go.

  82. pboy says:

You guys hear that? Jokinen tried to give Horc a reach-a-round. Fag….

  83. kris says:

Jokkinen with the reach around on Horcoff.

  84. kinger says:

18 needs to wake the fuck up and get into this game.

LOL @ "another reach around on Horcoff."

    - Weekes

  85. Steve says:

Yeah, the Oilers don't need that reacharound shit; they need a simple entry.

  86. Steve says:

Now Stortini taking Sarich's shaft…where's the TV repairman?

  87. PDO says:

The same cut reopened! HA! Karma.

  88. Lowetide says:

2-man advantage and they go walkabout. Oilers!

  89. kinger says:

"Boy he took all that shaft from Sarich in the face"

    - Oake

  90. Woodguy says:

About time they started to call those assholes for their stick work.

  91. Dakin says:

PDO- That was awesome! Stortini re-opened that cut like a pro wrestler.

  92. kris says:

    Moreau, Nilsson, Gilbert, and Horcoff.

13.5MM in salary not playing like it.

  93. Kelly Milligan says:

Penner seriously looks like an elite winger when he carries the puck end to end. Hes such a smooth skater and so strong on the puck

  94. doritogrande says:

Wow. Calgary might be giving us the game here.

I'd normally hate Stortini on the powerplay like that, but he got us an extra one. I don't know how to feel right now..

  95. Icecastles says:

I've always been a big Horcoff defender and continue to be, but he's been simply awful this season and isn't getting much better. Last year at least he was doing the little things right. This year the argument could be made that exactly half of his goals have been into his own net.

At least we're going to have a positive start to the third. Three more goals are going to be damn hard to get tonight though.

  96. RiversQ says:

Weekes and Lee need to clean their shit up. Seriously, enough with the "reach arounds" and "clean entries" and "shafts in the face."

  97. Icecastles says:

Kinger & Rivers: My stomach hurts from laughing. Awesome.

  98. PDO says:

Weekes and Lee need to clean their shit up. Seriously, enough with the "reach arounds" and "clean entries" and "shafts in the face."

They're just relating to the Calgary fan base…

  99. Lowetide says:

Oilers won't win tonight but they're showing some life. Too bad, too.

  100. Black Dog says:

Rivers – you saw the After Hours a few weeks ago when they were talking about the lotions and all that?

I think the homoerotic subtext is coming to the surface.

  101. PDO says:

LT just guaranteed that we win this game for the second game in a row…

    Hot damn.

    Good times.

Get the beer ready boys, the come back is on!

  102. RiversQ says:

Yeah I'm pretty sure hockey is homoerotic enough. These two are just taking the piss at this point.

  103. Woodguy says:

The Oilers are missing some depth up front and on the back end so they're getting exposed, this is where Sutter deserves credit and Lowe fell short so often.

Dawes, Bourque, Glencross – guys picked up for nothing and paid little and they're pretty quality

    100% correct.

Hope LT is right about Tambo and the likes of 18 and 24 get flushed.

18 gets bumped off the 2nd line for 22.

    Flu or just age?

  104. Black Dog says:

What's with the head on Stock.

I look at that guy and I think of that word that LT hates.

  105. Black Dog says:

Rivers – oh, yeah hockey is definitely homoerotic, its a running joke in our dressing room.

I didn't think anyone could be worse than Crawford but Weekes has proven me wrong.

Although I did enjoy the fistful of elbows comment – wasn't that a Clint Eastwood movie??

  106. Icecastles says:

BDHS – I love his soft, strokeable hair. His just engaging the homoeroticism in his own, Ken doll-esque way.

On an unrelated topic, what the hell is with 3rd jerseys spelling out team nicknames? "Sens" was bad enough, but Tampa Bay with a 3rd jersey that just says "Bolts"? If it were any worse it would be a Minnesota jersey.

  107. RiversQ says:

The NHL is completely idiotic, so it probably won't happen, but Richards should get 20 games for that hit. Just criminal. Booth ought to tee off on his head next time they face.

  108. doritogrande says:

I don't know the name of that highlights guy. He looks like a dumbass, but he's the next Cherry for sure.

  109. dubya says:

I know Horc still does a lot of things right, but jesus…we need some offense out of him. He looks drunk and/or stoned every time he has the puck.

And I think LT made a reference about watching thecaptainethanmoreau's career die right in front of us…bang on, he's just fading away.

  110. kris says:

PJ Stock has a kind of Irkell from Family Matters crossed with Tom Cruise on Oprah thing going on.

  111. Woodguy says:

SMac with 0:51 of ice time.

    12, 46, 77, 37 all -2 so far.

You gotta think Quinn demands an actual player be the 23rd on the roster after the last two nights with SMac.

Even if Brule and Comrie are back after Sunday.

    77/37 TOI 5v5 last year 600:30 min with a net +0.099 G/60

Did they forget how to play together?

  112. Black Dog says:

Milbury says it was fine though.

I would be surprised if he gets anything.

Be interested to see if Cherry says anything – his little montage on the Euro cheap shots earlier was amusing. For a guy who talks about the old days and good old Canadian boys and honour I wonder if he ever heard of Gordie Howe. He was the dirtiest player who ever lived.

  113. Icecastles says:

Dorito: That's PJ Stock. Fiesty little bastard when he played. Really small and not a brilliant player, but mean as hell. I think he's fantastic… definetely doesn't take himself too seriously, though a lot of people seem to hate that. His hair is not usually so combed (he's being George W for Halloween apparently)… though he still usually looks like a dumbass anyway. :)

  114. Dennis says:

    Here we go:

    - I have the chances as 9-18

    - 77's first period bled into the first

    - same thing with 49

    - 27 was the root cause of the Flames PP goal because he had a chance to clear but went back against the grain to try and start a breakout and it backfired. That being said, the guy still looks great in the offense end.

    - I thought the Flames PP goal could have gone either way.

Right now, here's what we have. I believe 49 won't see the ice again as long as it remains close – same goes for 33 – so 43 will move back to D and we've got 10 forwards to try and cobble together three lines.

I think we'll score on the PP's in the early min of the third to make it 4-3 but I don't think we can come all the way back. 19's been a bit off tonight at EV and we're missing a secondary threat; even though the 89 line's getting soundly outchanced thus far.

  115. Icecastles says:

This is last year's powerplay all over again.

  116. PDO says:

That was a fucking bullet from 10.

    Fucks sake.

  117. doritogrande says:

  118. RiversQ says:

BDHS: Milbury is retarded. Have you heard him say anything intelligent ever? Do you remember the Islanders?

Surely Booth cross checks him in the face next time out though? It's a total lack of respect that needs to be punished or reciprocated.

That was pure intent to injure. Just ridiculous.

  119. pboy says:

That would have been big for Horc.

  120. Black Dog says:

    Two posts.

  121. PDO says:

Oilers don't deserve to be tied, but when you figure they've rang iron twice and Calgary has two bullshit goals..

That's an even up call on Gilbert.

  122. Steve says:

Not sure what Quinn's WTFing about there. That looked pretty blatant to me.

  123. PDO says:

    4 on 3!

It can't be for long, but for fucks sake make it count…

  124. Icecastles says:

If we keep getting powerplays, we'll never win.

  125. Black Dog says:

Rivers – no argument on Milbury at all.

    Moreau draws a penalty. Wha?

  126. kris says:

Why did Giordano get a penalty?

  127. Woodguy says:

A good defensive play 77 gets punished by idiotic reffing…. Oops make up call on Giorodano

  128. Steve says:

I don't think we can send Chorney back down.

  129. PDO says:

He broke Moreau's stick. I think it's an idiotic rule, but it's an automatic penalty any time that happens…

  130. Jenga says:

Even the scotch is not making this game easier to watch. Nillson is giving me palpitations, and not in a good way.

  131. doritogrande says:

These Sutter brothers play fucking dirty hockey.

I didn't actually mind the Flames under Keenan, but they're playing like major assholes under Sutter.

  132. kris says:

I thought Kiprusoff broke his stick.

  133. doritogrande says:

And then frankenfuck goes headhunting on our captain.

  134. kris says:

Strudwick getting owned again and again by Iginla. Jesus.

  135. Lowetide says:

I'd love to see the Oil rip three in a buck in a half here but that's not going to happen.

Scarlet Johansson is knocking on the door.

  136. Steve says:

One of these days Patio's getting a hat trick.

  137. PDO says:

Oilers look good early. If we get one the flood gates might damn well open….

  138. doritogrande says:

Can anyone be faster than 71 on this team? I know 13's got wheels, but Vis beat the defender back by 2-3 strides. Jesus.

  139. doritogrande says:

Spectacular my ass. He lifted his glove 2-inches.

  140. Icecastles says:

Looks like O'Sullivan's shot was actually going to hit the post.

  141. Black Dog says:

Well they're getting their goddamned chances that's for sure.

    Plus Lubo is ridiculous.

  142. Lowetide says:

Ethan Moreau is now sponsored by the CNIB.

  143. PDO says:

    Ethan Moreau sucks.

He's just not a good hockey player at this point.

… they've let all kinds of shit go and then they call that?

The officiating in this game has been unbelievably inconsistent…

  144. doritogrande says:

If it's been mentioned already, I apologize, but Devan Dubnyk stopped Forty-six saves today before letting in a goal.

I know we've got Chorney and Peckham with the big club but hell, is the team defense in Springfield really that horrendous?

  145. Black Dog says:

    Oh Horc.

He needs a vacation. Like a week to relax, clear his head.

    Come back refreshed.

  146. Smytty777 says:

Moreau looks past his best before date.

  147. Icecastles says:

Devan Dubnyk stopped Forty-six saves today.

Does that mean he scored 46 goals?

  148. Jeff J says:

Mark Lee: "O'Sullivan's going to need therapy!"

Well, sure, but what does that have to do with the play?

  149. pboy says:

Ethan Moreau is now sponsored by the CNIB.

Death, taxes and thecaptainEthanmoreau making that pass are the only guarenteed things in this world.

  150. RiversQ says:

    doritogrande said…
And then frankenfuck goes headhunting on our captain.

Yeah, he's a jerk because he missed though.

  151. Dakin says:

Black Dog- I was thinking the same thing. Let whatever injury he clearly has heal.

  152. PDO says:

    And that's game.

  153. doritogrande says:

Fuck. Dawes. There's probably the best waiver pickup this season.

  154. pboy says:

  155. Dakin says:

Has anybody else noticed that Habiboblin sure lets in a lot of goals.

  156. Icecastles says:

Why the hell won't they play JDD against Calgary? At least put him in now and give him some practice.

  157. PDO says:

It's a good thing TheCaptainEthanMoreau can PK so well and get the puck out of his zone.

    Oh, wait…

  158. kinger says:

I'm not an 18 basher mostly because I really liked the physical element of his game. I could deal with the stupid penalties, as long as he finished his checks and stood up for his teammates.

Something has changed, he looks like he just doesn't give a shit on 80% of his shifts. Maybe he's pouting over the treatment Quinn has been giving him (less minutes, no longer playing a featured checking role), or maybe he's just past his due date.

  159. PDO says:

    PDO said…

That's the third flagrant penalty the Flames have gotten away with this period… one lead to a goal, and the other one was Hemsky getting tripped behind the net shortly after.

Anyone wanna take bets that Calgary scores a goal on a VERY soft call?

    8:43 PM, October 24, 2009

The more things change, the more they stay the same…

  160. Black Dog says:

kinger – I think the try is there but the legs are gone, same as Staios

Its a young man's league now. Lose a step and you're done.

  161. kinger says:

    That Glencross is a beaut.

  162. kris says:

Too many guys who can't play hockey.

  163. Icecastles says:

Something has changed, he looks like he just doesn't give a shit on 80% of his shift.

I've noticed the same thing. His penalties even seem to have tapered off not because he's playing smarter, but because he's just not as engaged in the game. I've not been a fan of his for a couple year, but I think at this point the reasons why he's gone south are irrelevant, because he just plain has to go. He's become a liability by almost every measure. And he's our effing captain. I don't know how it can do anything other than hurt morale, seeing *that* as your leader.

  164. Woodguy says:

Lankow trips Struds to create the 2 on 1 down low, no call, goal.

What did 22 get a misconduct for getting sticked in the head twice and defending himself?

  165. PDO says:

Too many guys who can't play hockey.

The scary part is, Nilsson, Moreau and Staios combine for well over 10% of the cap.

… that's the 3rd post for the Oilers tonight.

  166. Black Dog says:

That's it for me, wife is working so its me vs. chaos this weekend and chaos is going to be awake in six to seven hours.

Oilers need some guys out of sick bay soon I think. They have what, now, six, seven regulars out?

    Another ping of a post.

  167. Icecastles says:

LT – I'd love to see a post assessing our potential replacement captains… I think there's a good (and timely) conversation to be had there.

  168. kinger says:

Did you see that lazy backpass? Since when is 18 a fancy dan?

  169. pboy says:

It'd be interesting to see how the Flames would fare if Regehr, Bouwmeester, Glencross, Moss and Dawes were out of the line-up?

  170. Steve says:

It'd be interesting to see how the Flames would fare if Regehr, Bouwmeester, Glencross, Moss and Dawes were out of the line-up?

Are you comparing Staios to Bouwmeester or Regehr?

Face it: the Falmes are the better team.

  171. PDO says:

Souray is pretty much the only guy.

Horcoff has enough pressure already with idiots screaming $7,000,000 at him.

Staios is in the same boat.

Pretty sure Lubo was stripped in LA?

Hemsky ain't the guy. Nor is Penner.

And that's about it for guys over 26.

  172. doritogrande says:

Anyone else loving the trumpet in the background?

It's probably the best thing going about the Flames from my perspective.

  173. PDO says:

Sorry, Staios is in the same boat as Moreau..

  174. Steve says:

I was against the Heatley trade because I didn't want to lose Cogliano. I'm pretty sure he's now the one of the three I'd least mind losing.

  175. pboy says:

I thinking something along the lines of:

Not that I think Staios is close to the player that Regehr is but he is used in the same role, defensive d-man, 1st pairing guy.

  176. Steve says:

Not that I think Staios is close to the player that Regehr is but he is used in the same role, defensive d-man, 1st pairing guy.

Sure. But the fact that he's nowhere near the player but used in a similar role just goes to show why the Flames are a better team.

  177. Icecastles says:

PDo – That's about how I see it too… and Souray seems to actively want the captaincy (done a few interviews talking about leadership and accountability and says all the right things, as well as being a very clear leader on the ice).

  178. Woodguy says:

We've all assumed 10 is hurt due to his play.

Well OTC just put him on the ice with 2 minutes to go in a lost cause.

Does he do that if 10 is nursing an injury?

    I don't think so.

    Maybe he's just sucking?

Calgary has 5 home games in 20 days? Really? I thought the schedule was supposed to be compressed this year.

  179. Smytty777 says:

Not a good game for Oil, they were noticeably missing Souray tonight. He is the Oil's best Dman when it comes to breaking the cycle and that was a big issue all night long.

It will be a tough game on short rest tomorrow, hopefully they are up for it.

  180. Icecastles says:

At least Calgary actually *deserved* this win. Can't say the same about their first two in Edmonton this year.

Can't feel too bad about this one though, given the illnesses and the fact that, as has been alluded to on here already, Edmonton isn't really expected to be competing on the same level as the Calgarys and Chicagos (and for some wierd reason, the Colorados) of the West… you know, the teams that start with C. It's a tough letter. Just ask 18.

  181. pboy says:

Sure. But the fact that he's nowhere near the player but used in a similar role just goes to show why the Flames are a better team.

Fair enough. My point was, the Oilers have some pretty important players out of the line-up right now. I'd like to see how the Flames would fare if they had a depleted team like the Oilers have been playing with. I'm pretty impressed that they have been doing so much with so many guys out. I think last year it would have been used as an excuse but they seem to be persevering right now. Also, I can't stand Regehr and it puts a smile on my face thinking about him on the IR…..

  182. Dakin says:

Slow clap to you. Well done.

  183. kris says:

-Gagner, Penner, Hemsky and Visnovsky all look good.
-Khabibulin didn't let in anything terrible.
-Chorney might be close to being a decent 3rd pairing guy, but not quite yet.

-Nilsson and Moreau can't play in the NHL.
    -Cogliano apparently played. Who knew?
-Horcoff is in a terrible funk
-Gilbert and Grebs are struggling, and need Souray in the top 4.

But you know, it's hard to have depth when you've got injuries and the guys on the bottom of your roster are named SMac and Strudwick.

If we didn't have those guys we could've signed a Blair Betts or Sjostrom, etc.

What day are we on the trade watch now LT?

  184. HBomb says:

Woodguy: even though it didn't really matter, that 5th Flames goal drove me crazy. Langkow was "tripped" by Horcoff (I won't call it a dive, but it was a shit call), but then he runs flat-out interference on Strudwick to set up the goal by Dawes.

The Oil didn't deserve this one tonight, as they did NOTHING 5-on-5, but shitty officiating bugs me no matter when it happens.

  185. Oilmaniac says:

Hahaha… took the 2nd and 3rd off the board.. but I am glad to see this..

    Lowetide said…
PDO: There's no chance I screw this up. Unless a meteor hits the house. :-)

Hahaha… thats great, have a great night LT…

  186. HBomb says:

Wow, it sure looked a lot worse than the numbers are showing. Almost implies that it was close at evens.

The shorthander late in the first and the inability to score on the extended PP early in the 3rd, not to mention two goalposts, did the Oilers in, but I don't think they played well tonight, outside of the Hemsky line and the Visnovsky D-pair.

  187. PDO says:

Oilers couldn't buy a bounce, Flames got 3 suspect goals – 2 that should've been blown down before they happened on penalties, and one that was a high stick.

Meanwhile, Oilers rang iron 3 times.

Game would've looked a fuck load better if the Oilers could buy a bounce or two, never mind the momentum that kinda stuff can give…

  188. PDO says:

That said, this is when getting constantly out shot catches up to you… gives the other team a lot more chances to get a bounce, and you a lot less of a chance to get one.

  189. kinger says:

I thought 37-77 had their worst game of the season. I've always liked them as a pair (this and last season), but maybe Quinn's comments about their play is affecting them negatively. He's came out and called them soft and accused them of just keeping guys to the outside rather than trying to win battles. I actually like the way Gilbert plays D (keeps the play to the outside, uses his stick to chip the puck away and generally makes a great first pass out of the zone). Perhaps Quinn is guilty here of some undue criticism (emphasis on what style of play he wants them to play, rather than what is effective).

  190. Dennis says:

There's a difference between excuses and reasons and with us dressing our 7th-through-9th dmen and having to dress both our 13th and 14th forwards – plus the flu going through the team – there wasn't a good chance we'd come out of this with a point

Anyway, another bad night for 10 on the scoresheet but he actually finished 4/4 on the chance docket. Though, obviously, we need something from him offensively and I'm a little afraid he might fall into the offensive morass without 83 by his side. Also, it was odd for 18 to be a no-show in a game that featured some physicality.

    Other things:

    - I saw little of the EX season but I guess this was why 41 was the last guy sent down. Kid looked good again tonight, no doubt, and I don't think he's too far away.

    - PP clicked twice but also gave up three SH chances.

Finally, every coach has guys he's elevate and guys he'll demote. OTC once thought Steve Sullivan couldn't have a place in TO and just before OTC arrived in Hogtown, Mike Murphy convinced Mike Smith to give Jason Smith away for hopes and wishes.

And we know about Ron Lowe's love for Pat Falloon – look it up, kids:) – and his dislike for Whitney and Satan and on it goes.

Thus far, it looks like Quinn's far more harm than good but if there's anyone who takes the can under Quinn, I'd say the early candidate is 77.

  191. kinger says:

A quick addition to my last comments:

I did notice a strange play early in the second where Gilbert uncharacteristically stood up a guy at the blue line. He didn't get enough of that player and it led to a 2-1 down low.

My first thought was good for him for showing a physical element, my second thought was how much more effectively he normally plays those sorts of rushes.

  192. Oilmaniac says:

    Black Dog said…
    Oh Horc.

He needs a vacation. Like a week to relax, clear his head.

    Come back refreshed.

-I totally agree.. after making another block using his skates, it looked like horcoff could use some time to heal up..

  193. PDO says:

There's a guy on HF saying #10 is playing through a broken foot.

Take it for what it's worth.

  194. Dennis says:

That last post was a bit dodgey because it's getting late here:)

Anyway, I meant to say that it looks like Quinn's doing far more good than harm but 77 could fall by the wayside.

HB: Yeah, it was the flurry in the second that killed them.

I thought the Oil played an excellent road period in the first; outside of the allowance of the SH chance that turned into the goal, you couldn't ask much more of a team with so many guys in or capable of being put in the MASH unit.

But then things turned in the 2nd and the killers for me was the goal that Cgy scored after 77 was stripped to the left of Khabby; he has to be harder on the puck than that. Then 49 throws a backhanded wobbler to his partner and 37 has to take the gate and it's the PP goal.

of course, the chances began to even out because what we've seen is the leading team almost always loses the chance battle in the third.

  195. Dennis says:

PDO: it would make sense because 10's not even getting scoring chances; let alone finishing them.

But if he's hurt again this year, I'm afraid that could be the book on him and I hate those guys.

  196. PDO says:

You're right on the injuries, but there's injuries and there's injuries.

A guy like Souray you can never count on to play more than 40 games… he plays a tough game, and his body has a hell of a lot of miles on it.

Horcoff though, had never missed more than a handful of games until he blew out his shoulder.

A broken foot can happen to anyone… it's plain bad luck.

My worry is always the recurring injury. The bad groin, the bad shoulder, the bad knee…

  197. Woodguy says:

Hbomb: No GDT at your dark side of the interwebs?

Had to make my own there…..

  198. Traktor says:

"I saw little of the EX season but I guess this was why 41 was the last guy sent down. Kid looked good again tonight, no doubt, and I don't think he's too far away."

Taylor is a nice guy so I'm sure he will send a postcard to Cody Wild in Stockton.

Chorney looks great out there. Reminds me a little bit of Stephane Robidas.

Horcoff's contract reminds me of Martin Lapointe.
