Stars at Oilers, G2, 09-10

Dustin Penner seems to like opening night. A year ago, he scored twice (including the winner at 19:54/3rd) against Colorado. This season he was back at it, scoring a goal and adding an assist while clearly playing well all night long.

Last season, Penner followed up the 2 goals on opening night with a prolonged slump (10 games) and inspired Craig MacTavish’s public rant that probably spelled the beginning of the end for Edmonton’s head coach.

It looks like Penner took some of the disappointment one year ago to heart, and has been playing well since the curtain raised on training camp 2009.

He’s in good shape, he’s a great and fun (if an unpredictable) interview and Dustin Penner has a chance to turn lemon into lemonade this season. If he can score consistently, post something close to the 29 goals he scored as a rookie on the way to the Stanley, Edmonton Oiler fans will cheer him until they’re hoarse.

The Edmonton Oilers badly need an offensive Dustin Penner, and this season they may get one.
