#19 Prospect: Olivier Roy

Current Rank: #19
Summer 2009: #17
The selection of Olivier Roy in the 2009 Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers wasn’t a surprise; the team isn’t exactly flush in teenage goalie prospects.
The surprise came in where he was selected. Roy was ranked much higher (even hard markers Redline Report slotted him top 60) than his final slot (Edmonton announced his name at #133) and is one of a few goalies his age with a national profile. Proof of this came this fall when Roy was announced as one of Canada’s camp invites for the World Junior team (he should be headed there to join Jordan Eberle and Philippe Cornet for the Christmas tournament). He’s one of three goalies who’ll fight for the two G spots on the National team.
We have a bunch of quotes on this player and I’ve chosen two.
- Cape Breton Goalie coach Scott Gouthro: “extremely quick reflexes and when he challenges is very hard to beat. His competitive nature and desire to win is exceptional.”
- Cape Breton Head coach Mario Durocher: “He’s a warrior and he reminds me a bit of Marc-Andre Fleury. He’s got quick legs and he likes to challenge well out of his net. He practices really hard and that’s why he’s so successful.”
