I remember the North Stars of Worsley and Goldsworthy, of Maniago and Grant and Parise and Harris. As long as I live, the face of this franchise will be mannish boy Mike Modano. For those who don’t remember the 12-year old miracle that was G7 between these two teams, the two outer limits performances that night were Curtis Joseph on his 30th birthday and Mike Modano playing out of this world on a night when lesser men fade into the darkness.
Dallas is once again ahead of Edmonton in the standings and they’ve got some stars, baby. James Neal, Loui Eriksson, Brenden Morrow, Brad Richards, the list goes on. They’re a half dozen points ahead of the Oil and 7-3-4 at home. Father time has robbed Modano but he’s still a Star all the same.
The Oilers aren’t that far out of a playoff spot and I think that game the other night gave this team a template for winning. Toughness up front, a simpler game on the blue and big saves when you need it. If the Oilers win today they’ll be exactly 5 points behind Dallas (8th) with 53 games to play. Injuries have impacted this team but O’Sullivan is a streaky player and surely the kids (Gagner, Cogliano, Nilsson) will get hot soon.
Deep in the heart of Texas would be a mighty nice place to start. Oilers win today. Book it.
