The Edmonton Oilers recalled Taylor Chorney today. The need for a defenseman arose because of injuries to Ladislav Smid and Steve Staios. Ordinarily this would be seen as passing over the better-qualified Theo Peckham (who has had injury troubles all year long) but the fact is that Chorney’s play has improved over the last while and he might be the most qualified blue from the Springfield six.
A look at the progress by month:
- October 4gp, 2-3-5 -4
- December 10gp, 1-1-2 -13
- January 7gp, 1-1-2 +2
Chorney’s splits are rock solid, he’s having an excellent month. Let’s compare his numbers to the other blueline prospects in Springfield this month:
- Plante 9gp, 1-3-4 -2
- Chorney 7gp, 1-1-2 +2
- Wild 6gp, 0-2-2 E
- Motin 0-0-0 +4
- Peckham 4gp, 0-0-0 -2
I imagine he’ll play very little but he’s definitely the Oilers preference for first callup this season.
