The Plante Family

This is Cam Plante. He and some family members drove all the way from Manitoba in 6 hour shifts (that’s a long drive, I’ve done it. Miles and miles of miles and miles) to get to Alex Plante’s first big league game. Gene interviewed him during the game last night and Dad sounded proud of his boy and for good reason. The odds against your son making the NHL are enormous no matter where he’s taken in the Entry Draft.

Cam Plante’s boy made the show.

Now he’s in a race with Dad for “most games played” in the family. The race is pretty tight (Dad: 2, Son: 1) but since Dad’s NHL career ended 25 years ago the kid might just make it.

Alex Plante was a fairly high draft pick (15th overall) but the Oilers have failed miserably in that territory over the past several years. Below is a list of Oiler first round picks and their career NHL games played.

  1. Ales Hemsky (13th OV 2001) 443
  2. Andrew Cogliano (25th OV 2005) 218
  3. Sam Gagner (6th OV 2007) 208
  4. Marc Pouliot (22nd OV 2003) 148
  5. Jani Rita (13th OV 1999) 66
  6. Rob Schremp (25th OV 2004) 41
  7. Michel Riesen (14th OV 1997) 12
  8. Devan Dubnyk (14th OV 2004) 9
  9. Alexei Mikhnov (17th OV 2000) 2
  10. Alex Plante (15th OV 2007) 1
  11. Jesse Niinimaki (14th OV 2002) 0
  12. Michael Henrich (13th OV 1998) 0

I didn’t include recent first rounders Riley Nash, Jordan Eberle or Magnus Paarjavi-Svensson since they aren’t in the Oilers system yet. That’s first round picks all the way back to 1997.
