As the Oilers sink slowly in the west, we’re getting more specific trade rumors. An example would be Jim Matheson throwing out an “Andrew Cogliano for Peter Mueller” item in the EJ yesterday.
Although this isn’t a deadline style trade (they could do that deal anytime, both players are miles from free agency) it does address some of the Oilers needs’ (size, right wing) and rids them of one of their 12 small forwards.
On the negative side? Mueller is an rfa in the summer and makes $1,700,000 (including bonus). Cogliano’s number is lower ($1,133,000) and he is very likely to be a less expensive signing based on poor performance (Mueller is no screaming hell but is having a better boxcar number season than Cogs).
Edmonton needs to shed some cap dollars but they also need to improve the number of forwards with a wider range of skills. Mueller may be such a player. He has size (6.02, 205) and has deceptive speed, good hands and will take a hit to make a play. He scored 22 goals as a rookie, but followed that with 13 goals and has only 4 this season.
EDIT TO ADD: Elliotte Friedman is writing a killer column for CBC these days and has an item on one of the Oilers struggling blue. He says “one player Edmonton is getting calls about is Denis Grebeshkov.” It’s point #6 and I agree with his take completely.
