The Edmonton Oilers have parted ways with one of their trio of college defensemen from the mid-00′s drafts and it is no surprise that Cody Wild is the one to go. Oiler management have not hidden their opinion of Wild over the years and we’ve discussed them as a group here there and everywhere.
I’ve never understood the disconnect between the Oilers and Wild, and would give money to have an honest opinion from a scout like Chris McCarthy on this player. We know that two coaches (latest being Daum) don’t like the physical element he brings to the game and that the team sent away Wild today for a journeyman.
I think the trades of Wild and Grebeshkov in the last two days may be a sign of things to come. Look for the Edmonton Oilers to load up on knuckle draggers and Coke Machines again, as the cycle begins anew. Apparently we were collecting the wrong shiny rocks.
The new hire is big Matt Marquardt (6.02, 222) who is on his third NHL organization (Columbus, Boston) and has played 113 AHL games along with a trip along the Reading Railroad to play for the ECHL’s Royals for 9 games.
The Oilers no doubt feel they’ve added another big body to their pro roster and the Bruins no doubt feel they’ve acquired a hockey player. And they’d both be right.
