Every once in awhile I’ll read an item about the Detroit Red Wings and their exceptional job at the draft table. The Wings do in fact have a nice track record at the entry draft (Hudler, Fleischmann, Filpulla, Quincey, Howard, Franzen, others since 2002) but the key difference between Detroit and Edmonton is the number of actual NHL players playing for the winged wheel.
In tonight’s game the Oilers will be playing a number of kids who aren’t ready for prime time. Detroit? Experience, a wide range of skills and players with defined roles. The coaching staff will look for matchups and look for an edge.
They’re good, well coached and have a goal. The Oilers are porridge. This won’t be pretty.
