Draft Day 2010: A Brand New Day
In the long history of the Edmonton Oilers, there have been just a few measurable changes in fortune. The Boys on The Bus begat the Glory Years; Pocklington’s Purse begat the bloodletting which begat the wandering in the wilderness after the Messier trade; then came the Weight-Joseph years filled with the prospects gathered from dealing the Boys on the Bus; finally, the long coda that was the “Boys On The Bus run the store” era, spiking in 2006 summer and then ending with a long, painful decline.
Oiler fans have suffered long enough and today signals the dawn of a new era. There are going to be growing pains and there will be more changes at all levels before the club can contend for the Stanley; but today is an important turning point in the history of the Edmonton Oilers.
A great talent–the best of his draft class–will don an Oiler uniform this evening in Los Angeles. It’s a brand new day.
