I suspect these are the final days for Ethan rifles. It is clear that Steve Tambellini is finished evaluating and remaking an organization that hasn’t changed much in decades. So far, the changes have been window dressing and deck chairs. If you look at the moves from a business viewpoint, he’s changed the background culture without really addressing the face of the club.
Ethan Moreau’s exit will change all that and usher in a new leadership group. A new captain will be named (Horcoff is the obvious candidate but Tom Gilbert has been mentioned several times as a leader of the younger crowd).
The Oilers no doubt shopped Moreau at the trade deadline (and couldn’t have been asking for anything dear) without success; there is at least a chance they’ll get a similar reaction this summer.
If there was a “trading Ethan Moreau” betting window, my money would be on “yes” and “depth draft pick or AHL calibre player.” Moreau’s value isn’t zero, but it is also true that his salary/cap hit towers over what he’ll bring to his new club. If they can’t trade him, my guess is they buy him out. Steve Tambellini has gone this far, why stop now?
