I think it is at a point where we should be concerned about Sam Gagner getting signed. Steve Tambellini and Kevin Lowe have made the circuit (media) this week and Gagner (and Cogliano) have also recently gone public on the situation.
“All is fine” seems to be the mood of the negotiations, but if true we should be hearing words like “close” and “middle of next week” and we are not hearing it. In Steve Tambellini’s media walkabout yesterday (and I’m using David Staples excellent update which is here as a reference) he did make some comments about Gagner. He talked about Gagner playing a more prominent role (“if they’re ready to do it” which is hilarious. Note to Steve: Gagner can read a depth chart) and that in terms of leadership “we also think it’s time for guys like Gagner to show up.”
Which is true. Gagner turned 21 earlier this month and has three NHL seasons experience. He’s a smart kid and has posted three seasons of top 5 in team scoring (3rd, 5th 2nd by season) and can help the new kids adjust to the rigors of the NHL game.
Ethan Moreau taught him well.
