At training camp, prospects are trying to stand out in a crowd. It has been extremely difficult for any AHL level players to get traction at Oilers training camp this fall.
There MAY be quality there, but its kind of like being Bobby Vinton 2 weeks after the Beatles arrived: life as you know it has changed drastically.
The Oilers today are all about the future, and that future comes in the form of kids like Taylor Hall, Magnus Pääjärvi and Jordan Eberle. Even a prospect like 23-year old Linus (and it DOES rhyme with Venus) Omark can’t get much black ink after a solid display last night. The problem? Eberle stole the show, and the game before that it was Pääjärvi and the game before it was Hall.
The Oilers cut 20 early, and there’s been a trickle since:
- Sept 21: send Olivier Roy to Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL). Still on big league roster:45.
- Sept 23: send Cameron Abney to Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL). 44
- Sept 24: send Tyler Pitlick to Medicine Hat (WHL). 43
Today, the club sent 6 more away: Teemu Hartikainen, Brad Moran, Gregory Stewart, Johan Motin and Jake Taylor were sent to Oklahoma City. Stewart and Moran will need to clear waivers before arriving in their AHL homes. The Oilers also released Jared Aulin today.
The roster now stands at 37. I could guess the next group will include Ryan O’Marra, Ben Ondrus, Alex Giroux, Taylor Chorney, Martin Gerber, Colin McDonald and JF Jacques for re-hab. That gets the roster down to 30, with those final 7 cuts offering the real suspense of this TC: JDD or DD? Peckham, Strudwick, Belle, Petiot? Reddox, Vande Velde?
Interesting week ahead.
