The Edmonton Oilers share a few memories and personalities with the Coyotes franchise. Those battles in the 1980′s were wonderful, the best of them being the 1990 series (from an Oilers POV) as we watched Bill Ranford go from zero to hero in one spring.
The Coyotes come to town tonight as the clearly superior team, something Jets fans dreamed of back in the olden days. The Coyotes are in a tie for 8th in the conference (8-5-5) and at the same time the Oilers are hanging out in the basement (4-10-3).
There are still some things they have in common. Each has a Whitney at the top of their scoring, each has a plethora of first round picks in their lineup. The Coyotes have two things the Oilers lack: balance and quality. The Phoenix outfit boasts all of those veterans the Edmonton club doesn’t (names like Ray Whitney, Eric Belanger, Radim Vrbata, Wojtek Wolski, Lee Stempniak, Adrian Aucoin, Vernon Fiddler) as well as quality from the department of youth (Yandle, Turris, OEL).
The Coyotes are a pretty nice template. Hire good people with solid resume’s, let them do their jobs.
