Red Wings at Oilers, G11 ’10-’11

Love this photo. Fans of all ages in the stands (and not one jersey) and very few “long hairs” among the males. This is probably 1970, so I don’t think there are too many Woodstock attendees in this crowd. On the ice, Buffalo’s goalie (I believe it’s Joe Daley) is doing the swim. Howe’s by the goalie, and it might be Gerry Meehan (Sabre) turning away in photo. #10 for the Red Wings is definitely Alex Delvecchio.

I think heaven must have lots of books full of photos like this one. Beer everywhere, beautiful women and pictures of old timey hockey games that you can stare at for hours (the entire crowd looks like they ordered their clothes from the 1970 Sears Fall Catologue btw, except for the fellow wearing yellow).

Hell? I think it’s probably playing for the Oilers when they’re down a man. The Chilean miners would turn down that job, the PR guy for BP is enjoying good times compared to standing out there on the Oilers PK.

Working the Oilers PK is the toughest 10 seconds in hockey. After that, there’s a nice break and the faceoff goes out to center ice though, so it’s not all bad.

Detroit looked pretty strong last game, demons on the forecheck and their goaltending looked solid. Enough skill guys to kill you and enough rugged fellows with energy to wear you down. And Daniel Cleary is a former Oiler so we can expect between two and three goals for the second most famous native of Carbonear (and he’s gaining on Boyle, the showoff).

The Oilers are shuffling lines and defense pairings. The lines are interesting (Hall, Horcoff, Hemsky and Gagner with the other two kids) and the blue pairing are a giggle (Whitney-Vandermeer; Peckham-Gilbert and Smid-Foster). I wonder a little about the starting goalie tonight, but suspect NK will be in net.

It’s a busy weekend, with all kinds of action involving Oilers prospects. The Barons play tonight, tomorrow and Sunday (the AHL schedule appears to be based on picking nights when everyone drinks). Keep an eye on Martin Marincin in Prince George (WHL) too; this kid is on his way to an exceptional season in the dub.
