The truth is the Oilers could go any number of ways and win the day. If they select RNH at number one, trade up to get Ryan Murphy and trade for Ryan Smyth I’ll consider it a grand day. Should they trade down to number three and get Adam Larsson or another center, pick up Duncan Siemens later in the first round and lose Smyth to Calgary it’ll be a good day for MBS and another day of thinking for Steve Tambellini.
If the Oilers draft RNH, trade next year’s first round pick in order to get Adam Larsson and lose out on Ryan Smyth, we can congratulate another team on their efforts to select an elite level player next season. Should Steve Tambellini end up dealing the Nail Yakupov pick (or another elite player from next year’s very deep draft) for Larsson (Robin Brownlee has mentioned this a few times at ON–where there is smoke there’s fire) then it’s probably the death knell for his GM career.
If he trades next year’s lottery ticket and then makes little or no effort to add NHL players (like Ryan Smyth) then we must fear the deal is ownership sanctioned deal and there is no job danger for anyone in the front office. Imagine finishing last and watching Dale Tallon draft Sidney Crosby.
All will be revealed today.
