Oilers Current "Pro" Depth Chart (Update: Now at 50)

The Edmonton Oilers have added a lot of pro players over the last 10 days. They are nearing their 50-man limit and while there are still holes to fill we’re at a point where we can list the players and slot them where they might land in the fall.

And then we can adjust when they start trading players away, which will happen. How do I know this? There are 3 goalies for the entire pro organization, which includes Edmonton, Oklahoma City and usually 1 goalie for Stockton.
We already know a few things: the big league team has been upgraded at center and the 3rd and 4th lines shouldn’t bleed as badly as one year ago. The blue will give Northern Alberta uclers shortly after the first puck drop and the goaltending is as addled as ever. OKC will be very young–too young–and Steve Tambellini isn’t done yet. With that understood, let’s roll the list. OKC Barons in italics, RFA’s in bold.

  1. G Devan Dubnyk: The #1 goalie as we head to summer.
  2. G Nikolai Khabibulin: May have played his last NHL game.
  3. G Yann Danis: This year’s Gerber.
  4. G Olivier Roy: Solid prospect will make pro debut.
  5. D Ryan Whitney: Health is the big concern, he’s quality when he can play.
  6. D Tom Gilbert: A fine NHL defensemen, wish we had two.
  7. D Ladislav Smid: Improved this past season and was healthy too.
  8. D Cam Barker: The Oilers saw him real good. Let’s hope they’re right.
  9. D Andy Sutton: Enforcer on the blue.
  10. D They Peckham: Tough defender, his NHL spot secure.
  11. D Jeff Petry: He’s a bubble player currently, but a quality prospect.
  12. D Taylor Chorney: Likely to be slotted in the AHL this fall, could be lost to waivers.
  13. D Colten Teubert: Probably slotted in as AHL regular and possible callup.
  14. D Corey Potter: AHL defender will see lots of work.
  15. D Alex Plante: Tough defender likely an AHL player for 11-12.
  16. D Taylor Fedun: RH NCAA defender with skill and size. New pro this fall.
  17. D Martin Marincin: Signed pro contract, could still play junior. Highly touted.
  18. D Johan Motin: Falling well down the depth chart, could disappear over summer.
  19. C Shawn Horcoff: Still has the most complete skill set at C.
  20. C Sam Gagner: The best offensive C on the team, but for how long?
  21. C Eric Belanger: He’ll be shocked with the standing O after faceoff wins.
  22. C Andrew Cogliano: Will he see Labor Day as an Oiler?
  23. C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: Wonderful prospect has a shot to make big club.
  24. C Chris VandeVelde: Will be the experienced C in OKC.
  25. C Anton Lander: The Oilers love him, he could fly up the depth chart.
  26. C Tanner House: Early returns were very good in the spring.
  27. C Ryan O’Marra: Picking up his contract was curious based on this list.
  28. C Milan Kytnar: He’s a decent prospect, but buried.
  29. L Taylor Hall: The franchise.
  30. L Ryan Smyth: The returning warrior.
  31. L Magnus Paajarvi: Tremendous skills.
  32. L Ben Eager: Agitator and a solid 4th line player.
  33. L Darcy Hordichuk: Enforcer can take and make a pass.
  34. L Teemu Hartikainen: Big, skilled and has some grit. Quality prospect.
  35. L Lennert Petrell: Veteran Euro will be relied on.
  36. L Josh Green: OKC signing will be veteran leader.
  37. L Hunter Tremblay: College scorer will get his chance.
  38. L Curtis Hamilton: A nice range of skills.
  39. L Phil Cornet: Like Motin, he’s losing traction.
  40. R Ales Hemsky: Wonderful skill player.
  41. R Jordan Eberle: One of the key kids on the team.
  42. R Linus Omark: Exciting and useful player.
  43. R Ryan Jones: Will be relied on for energy and goals.
  44. R Gilbert Brule: At a crossroads, possible LTIR candidate.
  45. R Ryan Keller: Newly signed AHL sniper.
  46. R Antti Tyrvainen: Interesting player, has some possibilities.
  47. R Mark Arcobello: Quality AHL season. Can he do it again?
  48. R Toni Rajala: Finnish skill winger is a solid prospect.
  49. R Tyler Pitlick: Gritty winger with skill.
  50. R Cameron Abney: Enforcer probably headed for Stockton.

Thw Oilers are quite close to the 50-man limit, with a goalie and hopefully another defenseman on the way. The depth chart breaks out as 3 goalies, 14 defensemen, 10 centermen, 11 left wingers and 10 right wingers. Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule, Johan Motin and several others will not be secure if room is required.
