We’re going to see these rumors until the Oilers sign Hemsky to another contract or trade him. The Blue Jackets are on a mission to save Scott Howson’s job (I’m hoping Howson stays 25 years and wins 5 Stanley’s in Columbus, and with every win dedicates the victory to his biggest supporter: Doug MacLean), and what with a skilled winger down (Huselius) many helpful people are making suggestions.
Howson no doubt has fond memories of 83 from his time in Our Town watching the sublime winger. The Oilers might listen to an offer that features and overpay which brings us to the major problem marrying these two teams to a deal: The Jackets don’t have a lot to offer.
Howson dealt this year’s first round pick in the deal for Jeff Carter, and he dealt 2007′s first rounder (Voracek) in the same trade. Ryan Johansen would certainly qualify as full value, but the Jackets aren’t going to trade a franchise center for one year of Hemsky.
The Oilers could deal for young defenseman John Moore, a fleet defender sometimes compared to Jordan Leopold and probably a couple of years away from helping. The Oilers may also have interest in the Jackets 2013 1st rd pick because it could be a good one (despite improvements the Jackets have some problems in goal and on the blueline, or so it seems).
The Oilers sleep from mid-July through end August, so I don’t think anything will happen. In fact I know it. Will not happen. No chance.
My opinion is that the Oilers should work extremely hard to sign the man. Since drafting him ten years ago, Ales Hemsky has been one of the few things we can count on over these (mostly) difficult seasons. It would be terrific to see him hang around long enough to enjoy the party.
