G20 Oilers at Stars

Ryan Smyth has done everything else this season, maybe he can find a W in Dallas. For Oiler fans Dallas may not be hell, but you can see if from there. Of all the places for Sheldon Souray to show up, deep in the heart of Texas would not have been first choice.

Since Marchant beat Moog the southerners have had the decided edge, and that edge has stretched over a long time. On the ’06 run, I kept hoping that the Oilers would meet them in the playoffs (Colorado dispatched Dallas about the same time the Oilers were flushing Detroit) because that was one spring Dallas would have been in trouble.

I won’t be cheering against Souray, the Oilers put themselves in the position of being the bad guy in that scenario long ago. However, I’ll cheer like hell for the team to beat Dallas, and will vehemently refuse to acknowledge a feeling of impending doom even if the good guys go down 2 goals.

I honestly have no idea what to expect from the Oilers at this point. I think one of the teams will win and neither team will score 11. I think Dallas will score at least one special teams goal. After that, it’s a blur.

Rookie scoring 11-12
  1. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 19, 7-12-19
  2. Craig Smith 19, 7-8-15
  3. Luke Adam 20, 6-8-14
  4. Matt Read 16, 8-5-13
  5. Adam Henrique 15, 4-7-11
Oilers Top 12 F’s (5×5/60 mins behind the net)
  1. Ryan Smyth 3.24
  2. Jordan Eberle 2.78
  3. Ales Hemsky 2.36
  4. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 2.18
  5. Taylor Hall 1.77
  6. Ryan Jones 1.57
  7. Shawn Horcoff 1.37
  8. Lennart Petrell 0.80
  9. Ben Eager 0.54
  10. Sam Gagner 0.44
  11. Anton Lander 0.37
  12. Magnus Paajarvi 0.33

I don’t really have anything to say about the blue. The win Saturday was terrific, even the second time I watched it yesterday. However, there’s just no way this six can keep NHL forwards at bay. Here’s the EV running time from Saturday night:

  1. Gilbert 14:41
  2. Teubert 14:12
  3. Petry 14:02
  4. Chorney 13:51
  5. Smid 13:36
  6. Peckham 11:09

Gilbert and Smid were PK men for 7 minutes and Gilbert had big PP time (3:46) too. For me, Teubert looked exposed and that’s probably the guy Edmonton will send out when Whitney is better. I remain hopeful the Oilers will trade to improve the current D, but have been doing so since 2006 summer, so even the cry Wolf story went home.

According to tsn, Dallas has lost 5 in a row. They have Eriksson and Benn plus some talented scorers and their goaltending is good. Their defense looks weird to me: a bunch of stay at homes and a shooter in Souray, but it doesn’t look like a modern day crew. I guess that’s Goligoski’s job.

I don’t make predictions, especially after Saturday night. That’s why you play the games.
