Over the last few days, a few more names are shaking loose from the established group of available Oilers at the deadline. Ales Hemsky has been in the rumor mill for ages, and there have been items on Andy Sutton, Theo Peckham and Darren Dreger of tsn told us this week Sam Gagner’s name is being mentioned by other GMs when Steve Tambellini calls about defense.
The Oilers appear to be active based on reports and it’s an interesting time for the organization. Steve Tambellini’s style is to observe and report, but it does appear that men like Peckham may be offloaded for the next in line with a similar skill set (Colten Teubert, Alex Plante).
I think the Oilers would want a player back for Gagner, makes no sense to deal him for picks or prospects. Hemsky might fetch a first round pick and the club may feel another bullet for Stu MacGregor is a decent payoff for a few weeks of 83. Sutton, Peckham and others are probably picks. Fair?
What the Oilers need is a guy who can play a lot of minutes effectively, at even strength and on the PK. The club has four signed blue (Whitney, Gilbert, Smid, Potter) and then rfa’s in Petry, Peckham and Barker. Plante is going to get a look in the fall, Teubert too. There were also rumors the club was talking contract with Sutton’s people not long ago. Plus you’d hope they would be looking at a puck mover.
Which means too many bodies:
Plus guys like Marincin, Davidson, Blain on the way and Klefbom and Musil rising. There’s not enough room for these guys, let alone adding a puck mover and Jason Smith. I think the Peckham rumors might have some truth to them just based on next year’s depth chart.
