G60 Flyers at Oilers
If you could fly to 1975, hockey fans would tell you the Flyers had enjoyed a charmed life when it came to goaltenders. Parent and Favell at the expansion draft, 2 Stanley’s and then Bernie’s career ends. They grab 1968 Olympic goaltender (Canada) Wayne Stephenson and things roll along. After that, Pete Peeters, Pelle Lindbergh, tragedy, but Bob Froese is there and soonafter Ron Hextall. By now we’re 25 years into the franchise and the goaltending has been sublime.
I’m not quite sure when it happened–maybe it was the year Curtis Joseph was out there and the club signed John Vanbiesbrouck, or maybe it was the year they sent Toronto two firsts for a second stringer–but the Flyers have been born under a bad sign for a long, long time.
Jaromir Jagr had some pleasant things to say about Ales Hemsky in yesterday’s EJ:
“If Wayne Gretzky got traded, anybody can be traded. Whatever management wants to do, they’ll do. Might be good for them, might be good for (Hemsky) He’s got talent. Maybe if he went to a different team it would like a new start. Maybe he gets 100 points. He’s that skilled.”
Steve Tambellini may be in some luck as things are happening as the deadline approaches. If the Oilers plan to deal 83–and that’s my guess–then Koivu’s signing and the early deals outside the Oilers possible targets (a F for DET, NAS, SJS, LAK, BOS, NYR, possibly PHI) should bode well.
There’s no way the Oilers get full value, though. Hemsky’s season is recovering, but not in time for the deadline.

This is the only year he has.
Doesn’t have history of doing it.
This year looks like an outlier.
Career .617pts/gm
Turns 32 next month.
Pass.
A good period by the Oilers, Krueger might never return to the Oilers after this season but he’s really showing the organization some creative thinking with the line combinations. And I have to say that Whitney appears to be improving and the defensive group as a whole looks capable.
I don’t know how many times we have been able to say that against a team the calibre of the Flyers but man this is a nice little glimpse into what happens when the goalie is solid and the defense is working plus getitng support.
AND to my eye they’re not overplaying the 4line.
Should be interesting 3rd……Hartnell needs to be dealt with.
Go earn your pacheques 16, 55, 25! If not Hartnell then, mabe Giroux or Briere!
On the other hand, I guess Gagner is clearly off the trade table after these last few games! That kid is playing great!
I can’t remember being this excited watching an Oiler powerplay.
Even in the 80′s.
They’re feeling it.
Hartnell’s hit has to be reviewed by the league, no? Long, angry run at MPS long after puck is off his stick. I agree with SK Fan… Hordichuck and Eager for the last few seconds of PP, trolling the visitor’s penalty box.
Plays like Hartnell’s is WHY you dress a player like Hordichuk. You have to have him pay that back with interest.
I’m not drunk, the powerplay was ok in 80′s, but the bread and butter was 2 lines of 5v5 killers against anyone in league.
Hartnell will be suspended. Its usaully hard to tell whether knee on knee hits are on purpose or “reactionary” plays but its pretty obvious when Hartnell gets hit a few seconds earlier then attacks Potter and then knees MPS.
Wow, Lombardi even got the 1st conditional on making the playoffs (if they don’t make it, its a 2013, not 2012 pick)
I wonder if Howson knows where his jock is?
The 2013 pick is probably the better plan anyway. Much better draft year according to the experts.
Second period was very entertaining Hockey. Oilers did not look anything like a 29th place team. Too bad 24/7 is wrapped up… would be interesting to hear Laviolette addressing his team right now.
Would love to see a cross checking penalty sometime.
The officials in this game should be ashamed. I’m not usually one to complain, but these guys are a joke
How are these refs missing everything?
I don’t mind “letting them play” a bit, but this is just dumb.
Reffing is a joke league wide. Its nothing special. Refs these days are just fucking bad.
3 cross checks and a high stick to the goalies face. These refs are terrible.Wtf.
Jesus what rules are these refs calling the game by? Prison rules?
fuzzy muppet,
Love that shot of the official talking to Hemsky’s at the bench. Something like…
hemmer : wtf?
Ref: sorry dude. The fix is in
WTF is going on? That’s 3 blatent penalties missed within 5 minutes.
I like Grossman just outright tackling Hall. Hard hockey I guess.
Kneeing when angry is two minutes when east coast league marketing is in charge of officiating.
This is embarrassing. Even if the Oilers pull a “Last Boy Scout”, the refs better keep their whistles in their pockets.
Hartnell has had 1 shift so far. Real stand up guy…..
I don’t like much of Belanger’s game, but dam he can win faceoffs.
Lowetide,
I have a feeling that LA’s 2013 pick will be later than this year.
Might not make a difference, but its still a Lombardi point. He killed this deal.
Last 10 minutes will say alot aboiut the development of this team. Last few years in this situation, against a premier team, the oilers tent would fold in….
HUMANGAS BIG SAVE.
Bryz got his groove back?
So now the zebras try and calm the Hartnel situation down by sending an Oilers D with him to the box. They’re consitent – consitently bad.
Great games by both goalies. Really like seeing the oilers continuing to press. Renney who?
Flyers have basically said “Fuck It” and are just trying to injure Oilers now. Coburne thinks he’s in the WWE or something.
WTF?
Colburne tackles Hall without the puck and sits on him while the ref just watches????
Too many men, hold on Hall, Tackle on Hall – I think we’re at 10 missed calls in one period.
If a player ever wanted to take his stick and two hand an opponent across his head this might be the game to try it.
…..
Seriously? After all the shit they let go they call that crap?
Unbelievable. It sure looks like the fix is in.
Awful officiating.
A call on Hall??? WTF
Unreal.
I’ve counted 14 missed calls on the Flyers in the 3rd and 6 missed on the Oilers, but the Flyer ones have been the more visible, egregious sort.
I haven’t been this choked about reffing in a long time. Not even against the leafs.
Hilarious.
Seth Meyers is an Oilers fan? ! -)
Refs are trolling now.
FFS now they’re buying whatever Simmonds is selling. Unreal. Kozari and Kowal in case anybody cares.
The biggest problem I have with the reffing is the media gives it a free pass every time, regardless of which teams I’m watching. Its like they refuse to or are scared to.
I’m surprised they actually called that….
I once attended a dinner function with one of Hartnell’s siblings, during his Nashville era.
From How the Flyers winger got his groove back
Yeah, on the basis of two data points, I suspect the whole family straddles the line. It wasn’t anything obvious, but there was some kind of smokey bog fire behind the eyes. Pleasant enough I suppose but didn’t pass the “hang with” test. It was probably mutual. Whatever it was, Scott got three helpings, judging from his on-ice antics.
A bit like the Sutter thing. Like Gertrude used to say: a Sutter is a Sutter is a Sutter is a Sutter. Why she stopped at four is beyond me.
That’s one situation I wish it was a penalty and not a penalty shot.
Can a team decline the shot and take the PP?
Marc Joannette is watching this game at home with a big grin on his face.
Now we can only hope Hartnell gets a meaty suspension (if one at all..) and that Paajarvi isn’t too badly hurt.
They can never get an empty net goal for some reason.
Well fought by the boys. It seems like they are starting to get it.
Lord knows i’ve said THAT before
Good performance by 40. Good game overall. Hope 91 IS ok.
Fun game to watch except the reffing.
DD had a great game. Best Oiler.
Hemsky, Hall, Eberle also with nice nights.
I like the way these guys play together.
It will hurt their draft pick, but these guys will win some games down the stretch if they play like this.
Reasonably solid team D, good offence.
Hope they sign Hemsky.
Good for DD – well deserved.
Still disappointed Hatrnel didn’t have to answer.
Does Philly play like this all the time? Man they shoul have had 10-15 minors tonight.
Good night – Leafs and Flames Lose, Jets win.
You can really see what can be done with some balance. Goalie isn’t giving up rebounds by the dozen, defense moving the puck expertly and not running around like a chicken with their head cut off. Plus they seem to be getting healthy–Whitney, Potter, Gilbert. And Smid God love ‘em was the one guy who played some smashmouth.
And sweet Jesus Taylor Hall is a monster. Finally all those words Pierre uses in a single player. Whammo! Kapow! Monster!
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Just to be clear, is LA captain Dustin Brown in play? As in being shopped? Yes, absolutely. But that doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to move.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
LAK will decide based on quality of offers. But given considerable interest from multiple teams, decent chance he moves. #TradeCentre #tsn
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
We’ll talk tomorrow about the “why” of Kings considering a regime/culture change by possibly moving their captain. G’night. #TradeCentre
Why? Horcoff is one of the best in the NHL in the shootout.
I think Renney should stay as the eye in the sky.
Really like how Krueger runs the bench.
I am kind of wondering if Smid may be the team MVP for most valuable contribution to coaching excellence.
Didn’t see the game–so did MPS leave and not return? Any word on the injury?
Great game all around. Goalie to coach. Wonder if Renney is taking Spanish lessons on his headset… he may have time to travel soon.
If Hemsky is gone by Monday and Brown is in play, what would it take to make that happen? My trade deadline day prediction… Dithers mulls Hemsky offers all day, pressed to make a decision at the 11th hour and 59th minute, he doesn’t get the paperwork into the league office on time to secure a transaction. Book it!
So I was talking to a buddy during the second intermission and he was talking about how we don’t need Hemsky any more. I explained the way the Oilers have run their bench to shelter Eberle this year, and that if Hemsky moves there’s nobody to protect him.
Nothing, didn’t change his opinion one iota. Eberle can play against anybody, and there’s more kids coming up who need roster spots.
The conditioning job that the Oilers and media have done on this town is absolutely incredible. It’d be inspiring, if it wasn’t so frustrating.
Yeah, knee-on-knee by Hartnell. Right down the tunnel, no weight on it. Didn’t return.
Uncle Feaster calls out his team between periods. Flames lose in a shootout.
Does the Flames GM have the stones to do what must be done and blow that team up (for the future?)
Tracy @TreenasOil
#Kings have offered Dustin Brown for Tom Gilbert as per Garfield
Tracy @TreenasOil
Hemsky looking for 4yr deal Oilers have offered 2yr
wordbird,
Either that or take a run at Nash while Kipper and Iggy still have something left in the tank. Don’t see how they have the assets to do it, though.
I could have made up the Treena rumours just by reading this thread…
She is full of sh*t, right?
Really like D Brown but like Gilbert better
If we trade our best Dman for their 4th best forward… I will know that I’m alive and well in the right universe.
Dammit.
Bra and panties hasn’t had a hit since July, and I’m not sure s/he was first with anything.
Had nothing on Sutton signing before or after.
Well let’s see,
Hemsky >> Dustin
Gilbert >> Whatever D Hemsky gets back
So…
Book it!
Clusterfuck on its way.
On the other hand, I bet dithers probably listens to the coaches too, maybe one of them will clip Jagr’s comment, “guy has 100pt chops”. Now that there’s a team around him why wouldn’t we let him enjoy it. He’s been here thru the shit, his contract should be tradeable.
So what, exactly, is the problem we’re trying to fix by dealing out the guy? Am I missing something?
Has Hemsky lost the room???
Gilbert and Hemsky for Brown and Forbort,
Do it,
Brown is better than Hemsky.
Wow.
According to Denis 5 and 58 out chanced the opposition:
Smid 10-1
Petry 10-3
Their most common opponents (besides Bryz) were:
Giroux
Simmonds
Hartnell
Coburn
Grossman
3rd pairing D, but top forward line.
Their most common forward team mates were:
Hall
Hemsky
Horcoff
Well done by those 5 against a very good line.
Their scoring chances were:
Hall 9-2
Horcoff 9-3
Hemsky 9-4
I hope that line stays together for a while…
It’s like wondering if a God exists. Tough to tell either way. Teams yak all the time, mostly unreported, and she has nailed some stuff early. Insider early. Very little about what teams yak about comes to fruition, as best I know (and maybe the GM book readers can chime in here if tthat’s a myth), so I’m not surprised she has a poor record. She certainly doesn’t get Dreger-Mckenzie cred in my books, but neither does she get Eklund’s.
Oh yeah?
Based on?
Trollin’ trollin’ trollin’
His best ever season is 60 points. While playing with one of the best offensive centres in the game. On a team that can’t score worth shit.
Brown’s a nice player, but if him and Hemsky swapped spots Brown would keep being a 50 point guy and Hemsky would drop 80+ points a year in LA with those centres.
I’ll wait for you to cherry pick one stat to try and make an ever-changing argument now.
I wonder if a mid season puck to the head would have done MacT any favours? The back to basics approach seems to be doing wonders for the teams play. The healthy bodies are of huge help of course, but there appears to be a clearer gameplan in place here with Krueger leading things.
I can’t help but to chuckle when I think of what Tom Renney was watching when he came back early to coach a game. It must have been a giant blur.
That rumour scares me because it fits in exactly with Tambellini’s m.o. thus far. Petry shows a few games of real results, which means its time to put Gilbert out to pasture and replace him with Petry.
I must have missed this bit…why was Couturier not playing?
Sign Hemsky. Move Barker and Peckam and Bulin for anything. Draft BPA. Sign a solid d to round it out in off season, and make a run at Harding. Happy times in 2012-13.
Off topic, but I wonder if Nashville could be the sleeper team for Nash. They need to show Weber and Suter they mean business. They have good young d, a good young goalie, would move their 1st pick, and could add Radulovs rights. Columbus drafts the young Russian first. Adds Radulov, a young goalie, and pushes an offensives style. Top it off with an overpay for Semin as a ufa and you get and all skill Russian top line. Sell the fans on the fun no defense hockey.
Sorry, should have been more clear.
Whether DB is Hemsky is immaterial, and to be fair DB + 2M cap space is nothing to sneeze at.
But that’s not the decision point here.
The problem is Gilbert goes to fill DB into the hole that is created when Hemsky goes. If he doesn’t go, theres’s no hole. If he does go and DB gets backfilled, who the hell fills Gilbert’s hole?
The problem is losing 83 for nothing creates a roster spot hole. If one day he’s got to go, trade him in better form into a better market. If his shoulders are good, and none of us frigging knows that so I won’t argue the point – but if they are then he’s a player. No point selling at the bottom if there’s a reasonable likelihood he can come back completely.
Dreger on Twitter:
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
As I said earlier, teams are circling with interest in Hemsky. But, don’t rule out the Oil making one more push to re-sign him.#TradeCentre
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
2 years, $10 mil (5 per) might keep Hemsky an Oiler…might not. Options being considered in Edmo. No doubt about that. #TradeCentre
There’s no way there’s a trade in place for Hemksy that improves on Gilbert enough to justify trading Gib for Brown. Unless its something like Hemsky and 2013 1st for M Staal and a conditional, and I have a hard time believing anything like that because it predicates other trades.
And that’s assuming switching Brown for Hemsky and salary is a wash. Which it fucking ain’t.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Further to @DarrenDreger’s tweet on EDM try to sign Hemsky, postgame buzz tonite was GM Tambellini in dressing room area to meet with Hemsky
Guess we will find out Friday if there was enough traction to get Hemsky deal done. Stay tuned. #TradeCentre #tsn #rustneversleeps
Dustin Brown is a good, even a very good player. But we are in desperate need of defensemen. More, not less. Trading Gilbert for almost anything would be insane.
In fact, we need the opposite: trade a quality forward for a quality defender. I’d hate to see Gagner go, but I think trading him makes the most sense, provided we get a quality D in return. Enstrom from Winnipeg? Buy low, sell high. Gagner’s value is high right now.
And speaking of buy low, sign Hemsky!!
It is really too bad we stink on D. Dustin Brown riding shotgun for some of the young’ns would be perfect.
Top six: Eberle, Hall, Hopkins, Hemsky, Gagner, Brown. LTFO.
I would think that LA is so immediately desperate for D that they’re now going to get screwed by any team they tap. They maybe should’ve made that deal concurrently.
Hemsky might have a higher point potential than Brown but Edmonton could use Brown more than they could use Hemsky imo.
The last 4 seasons (not counting this year) he has average 27 goals per season and over the last 5 years the only player with more hits is Clutterbuck. In the last 7 years Brown has only missed 7 games total.
Eberle/Hemsky is nice but Eberle/Brown is a lot more balanced IMO.
I’m not suggesting we should make that trade or that LA would even consider it but there is a lot more factors than just points when comparing Hemsky and Brown.
And both is better than any of that. Both and you’re set for a LONG time.
I don’t think LA is desperate for D.
Doughty, Mitchell, Scuderi, Martinez, Greene, Voynov, Drewisky.
Losing JJ was addition by subtraction.
Agreed.
Lombardi is in full scramble mode in LA and he’s going to do whatever he can to keep his job. One of the local sports radio guys made a pretty good point yesterday. GM’s of underachieving teams aren’t necessarily going to make moves that are the best for their team 5 or 10 years down the line. They are going to make moves that ensures they are still at the Draft table come spring time.
Hemsky hasn’t scored 60 points since 2009.
Might he match his career high of 77 some day again.
Sure, but there’s a better than even chance that he won’t.
He’s currently on pace for 47.
GFON/60 – 1.77
GAON60 – 2.65
Hemsky is of course playing the toughs but he’s getting killed.
Brown brings a lot more than scoring to the table in that he hits like a truck, fights and is very hard to play against and yet he’s outscoring Hemsky on a team that can’t buy goals.
GFON/60 – 2.04
GAON/60 – 1.74
Additionally, Brown has scored 20+ goals 4 times including a career high of 33.
Hemsky, despite a longer career, has scored 20+ only twice with a career high of only 23.
Hemsky might score 80 points playing with LA’s centres but that sure hasn’t worked out for Penner and, in any event, Hemsky would have to stay healthy to accomplish that.
The smart money says there’s little chance that will happen.
Brown has missed 9 games in the past 7 seasons.
No brainer.
