Sam Gagner enjoyed a night for the ages, providing Oiler fans with a wonderful memory that ranks right up there in terms of a single game, regular season performance. Gagner is an interesting piece in the rebuild, young enough and skilled enough to play with the “touched by God” group while also being a little older/experienced. Gagner should fit with any 5-year plan the Oilers management can place on the white board.
It was a spectacular evening, one we won’t forget for a long time. 8 points is historic–tied with 99 and 7 from the Glory team–and honestly it couldn’t have come at a better time. With Darren Dreger saying the same words every 15 minutes he’s on tsn–”the Oilers aren’t offering Gagner but they badly need defenseman and that’s the name mentioned by other general managers”–it gets a little depressing to think about another rob Peter to pay Paul deal that may or may not work out.
Gagner’s evening should give pause to the Oilers organization. On the list of vital things for NHL teams, contributing directly to goals for is still the mot valuable gem in the mine.
I sincerely hope the Oilers find another way to address defense. The inner circle list of unavailable players rightly includes 4, 14 and 93; I think there needs to be a secondary circle for the build that includes valuable players like Sam Gagner. He’s suffered through the pain with all of us and has not buckled from the strain. Oilers fans have seen him develop and should also be rewarded by seeing the heart of his career in an Oildrop.
The Oilers do need defensive help, but they’ll have to find another way.
Gagner’s 5×5/60 is listed at 1.48; when the new number hits it should see a healthy bump.
