Cameron Critchlow

The Edmonton Oilers have invited Cameron Critchlow to their summer development camp in July. The story is here, his career stats are here.

Edmonton has been doing this a little more lately, signing 20-year olds graduating from the CHL or NCAA kids who went undrafted. The club did a lot of this early in the Kevin Lowe administration, with high water marks being Marc-Andre Bergeron (QMJHL) and Ty Conklin (NCAA).

Oilers won’t know what they’ve got for years, and of course he needs to impress enough to earn a contract.

Go all Pisani in the playoffs and you will catch the Oilers’ eye.

If they sign this fella and let Blain, Davidson and Czerwonka walk, I’ll be pissed.

If things break right for him, he gets an AHL contract.

Not so sure about that. If he impresses, I’d go in.

We have a limit of 50 contracts and if later draftees with 2 more years in the CHL can’t hack it, then why should we carry them?

I’m down in the Phoenix area (Chandler)

Been coming down here semi-regularly for four years

Just heard hockey talk and a ticket give away on the rock station I listen to.

Was in a Best Buy on Sunday and there was a big crowd watching the hockey game in the TV section

Game was on in the bar i was in as well with everyone paying attention

Was at golf course and they guys in the starter shack were talking hockey

Never seen this level of interest before, nice to see.

Ask people if they go to the games and they all say the same thing, “once in a while, but it takes too long to get to Glendale”

The Scottsdale/Gilbert/Chandler area could probably support a team.

From the east/south side of Phoenix, it can be 45-60 minutes to get to a game

    Gonna be 110F+ here today

    Hockey weather

The ice will still be better than Rexall’s (its a dry heat).

MacKinnon’s mentor & linemate? I see it all now: Toonces is drafting Murray because we’re just going to trade Hall & Petry for the Mackinnon pick. Boom. Stanley Cup.

Lol… Matheson must be mailing it in from Mexico these days. In today’s Ask Matty he insists Myers was not taken by Buffalo with the Edmonton pick. He says Edmonton would have picked 17th, so apparently we made the playoffs in 2007. He gets the second rounder wrong too. Well, at least someone is buying Barry margaritas down there.

    Woodguy,

I played in the Coyotes Alumni Golf tourney at the end of March. Talk then from one of their PR guys was when the team sold, the new owner would get a discount in the price. This discount was to match whatever it cost the new owner to fix up the old arena where the Suns play. ie if it cost 30 mil to update the arena that would come off the purchase price.

The guy who told me that was the same guy that said last year they weren’t going to Winnipeg. If anybody was moving there it would be Atlanta.

Critchlow is a Dec 91 birthday. He got 50 pts in 68 games (.73 ppg) and is a 5′ 10″ winger.

Blain is a March 92, has good size and got 50 pts in 58 games (.86 ppg) last year as a defenseman.

Czerwonka is a July 92, has good size and was injured lots last season. He went .8 ppg.

Davidson is an Aug 91 and put up 49 in 69 (.71 ppg) as a D

If you are using precious contracts, it seems obvious who the least qualified prospect is.

  9. Moose says:

I’m all for signing Davidson and Blain, but Czerwonka’s a late round pick with skating and injury issues. Not the kind of prospect that screams “give me a contract,” especially when you can hit the re-set button for 2 years and draft a similar player this year. You might as well give Triston Grant a pro contract, at least he’s proven at the AHL level.

  10. LMHF#1 says:

Has there been any talk of scrapping the 50 contract limit in a new CBA? It really is one of the most useless things they put in there. Costing both players and teams at this point.

  11. commonfan14 says:

Either a lot of people are extending their long weekend, or this guy stinks.

  12. Jordan says:

    commonfan14,

    Could also be both.

If the thought process is that inviting him here might help to buy points with Nathan, I could understand it at a strategic level. But, at the same time though, if you’re drafting first overall for a 4th year, I don’t think it matters.

    New level of suck there.

  13. spoiler says:

The important thing is they’re looking under lots of rocks. It’s just an invite to a development camp. It might even be a favour to someone. The kid deserves a little reward and a little window of opp after the Junior career he’s busted his butt off to put together. If, if, IF, he earns a TC invite and then if, if, IF he earns an AHL contract (he’d take that at this point in his career), and takes away a spot from a recent draftee, it will be because he’s, again, earned it.

Wow, Glendale would get totally screwed.

Surely, there’s a no move clause in there somewhere.

That would be quite the white elephant.

I go to alot of the Halifax Mooseheads games and this guy has been a rock since he came over in a trade for draft picks. All throughout tthis years playoffs he anchored the Moose, scoring big goals when needed and being generally a pain in the oppositions neck with his gritty play. He’s got a sweet touch and isn’t afraid to get physical….I think Edmonton would do well to take a close look at him….his numbers early in his junior career are by no means indicative as his performance this year in Halifax showed.

  16. Bruce McCurdy says:

Summer development camp & even rookie camp is a long way from one of the 50 contracts. There is absolutely no harm in giving the guy a chance and a look. Oilers invited a few good kids last summer & fall like Brett Ferguson & Wes Vannieuwenhuizen & Colin Smith & so forth. I think the only one who got an AHL contract was Ryan Lowery, but the other guys did get a taste of it.

In another day we used to call guys like that “training camp fodder” but I’ve come to respect them as a group. Lots of deserving kids in there.
