Toronto–in a delightful coincidence–ranks 30th due to alpha and coming up on 50 years of failure. I wonder if the Oilers current owner can match that record? He’s off to a very good start.

My two favorite lines about Burkie’s boys …
They have never won the cup while I have been alive and their team photo has only ever been taken in black and white.

BOOM!!! HEADSHOT!!!
Also,
Why is everyone so damn sure Suter and/or Parise are going to DET?
Playing with Lidstrom was a big part of the draw.
The 3 players they have signed long term are Zetterburg, Franzen and Kronwall (although Dats will probably re-up in 2 years)
Dats will be 34 in the fall, Z will be 32, Kronwall 31.
If I want to be on a team with a read shot of winning in the next 5 years, it isn’t DET.
They have a pile of cap room and will probably spend it wisely, but for me, the shine is off that franchise in terms of UFA destination.
Also,
Franzen turns 33 in December.
That’s an old team that must be on the decline.
Forwards don’t get better as they get deeper into their 30′s
Good points WG
It will be interesting to see how Det Goalers fair without #5 keeping the puck out of their own end for half the game. I suspect they won’t win as consistantly with average to good goalers anymore.
Injuries are starting to be a factor for Dats, Z, and Franzen as well.
Seeing as there are no obvious replacements for these guys on their roster or in their system that shows how lucky they got at the draft table with these guys.
Having said that I’m sure Holland will go on a shopping spree this summer. And the above players have a few miles left in them yet.
They don’t. The strongest rumour and talk round these parts has been about Philly taking a run at Suter.
Derek Zona has published the Oilers’ scoring chances from last year
The Oilers managed to trade away the only Dman who was positive in SC (and who took on toughest comp)
Jones is still awful. He started out well then remembered he is Ryan Jones. Cheats for offense and no clue about defense. Turned into a decent PKer though, but can’t check his hat 5v5.
The kids get a lot of scoring chances, but give up a lot of scoring chances. Standard for kids to give up a lot, nice to see them getting more than they give up.
Other interesting tidbits in there, worth the read.
Actually, the judges declared it as nothing more than a pitty-pat punch.
I agree about Detroit. They are going to lose Stuart and Lidstrom. So they need to spend a lot to get back to where they are – which wasnt elite this year. Holland is a great GM but we might say the same about Lowe if the rake stayed here. Lidstrom – what a player. It will be interesting to see if Detroit can keep its elite status over the next couple years. That fisherman scout they have might have to deliver a couple more gems to do so.
Yes, but note that the traded him for a Dman who was also positive in SC and who had a higher DIFF/15.
Selective stats are DSF’s territory.
I have some issues with the numbers there.
With 3/4 of the team on the negative side of the scoring chances metric, it’s almost impossible to figure out who is actually worth much on the team. And with the ice sloped quite heavily in favour of the 3 amigos up front, it’s not clear how much of their numbers are theirs by merit, and how much by circumstances.
What the hell is going on with MPS and Ales? Good numbers, crap points?
Are the scoring chances bad because the defense doesn’t prevent enough chances? Does the Defense look bad because the forwards can’t generate chances? Are the forwards not providing enough support to the defense in their own zone?
How much of the horrible numbers at the bottom of the lineup was because the guys playing there are not NHL-calibre players? Chemistry? Injury?
If those players are on the ice 10 minutes a night and helping keep the other players fresh, how much better do they need to be to keep things even? Make a positive contribution?
All that I can be 100% certain of looking at those numbers is that the Oilers got worked this past year. Which I already knew from watching them.
Principe tweets…
Oilers agreed to three year contract with d-man Brandon Davidson. He played 69 games last year with Regina had(13G, 36A) and 83 PIM’s.
Sorry if this is a duplicate comment, but for some reason my previous comment is being ‘held for moderation – I will use different wording this time’
Woodguy – In terms of scoring chances, Schultz actually did better than Gilbert. I know you are just quoting Zona, but Zona’s pretty selective when interpreting stats to ensure that everything looks as bad as it possibly can.
Oilers announce the Davidson signing… http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=633340
And when building a team via free agency is very tough to achieve good value/$
True, but the Oilers still traded away their only positive SC Dman.
They received a pretty good Dman in return, but Shultz didn’t play the toughs like Gilbert did.
The point of making a team better is to not trade away the good players.
So which young D are playing for OKC next year?
Marincin, Davidson and Tuebert.
I think that’s it right?
Klefbom in SWE, Gernat in WHL (or KHL), Simpson in NCAA, Musil in WHL.Bigos NCAA.
Is that all of them with Blain not getting a contract?
Jordan,
What the hell is going on with MPS and Ales? Good numbers, crap points?
Variance is a bitch.
You can still look at the players and balance these numbers with zone starts on QC.
Just because these numbers need some context doesn’t make the numbers bad, just incomplete.
Where will Fedun be playing?
So co-car poolie Holmstrom mustn’t be coming back either, right?
I don’t know that Detroit wasn’t elite this year, considering the streak. But as WG points out, building through FA will be difficult. They gave up this year’s first rounder, too.
Corey Pronman has Detroit’s prospects rated number one in the NHL, but that’s about as good as an example of confirmation bias as one can find on the entire internet.
Good news on Davidson.
Rigged.
Good one. OKC.
Belanger was worse than Jones. I was wondering why you didn’t mention him instead but then I remembered that you were such a big fan of the signing.
Also, Nick Schultz had better scoring chance numbers than Gilbert. Who knew?
derpy derp.
I saw a comment the other day (don’t know if it was from a good source – just something someone said here or on ON) that Gilbert was traded for ‘lifestyle reasons’ – maybe he got tired of Oiler fans?
In any case, I am not sure that it is a net loss for the Oilers, though we should get a better picture after we see how Schultz and Gilbert perform on their respective teams in the coming season.
Woodguy,
I suppose there’s Plante, too.
Sorry Trak, didin’t know I had to run down everyone.
I’ll check with you before I post anything in the future.
Derp, derpy
I’m confused for how Philly is going have the $8Mill in cap space they are going to need to sign Suter. Are they getting some kind of break on the Pronger contract, Is Timmonen retiring, Is there an amnesty provision if your goalie is scared of Bears?
Not sure he’s “young” anymore at 23.
That was D.SF and he hasn’t provided anything else other than the rumour itself.
I’m losing a lot of comments today, so I’ll try again:
DSF made that claim, and with zero evidence (shocking, I know)
Thank you, I tried posting this twice. It appears DEE ESS EFF sends comments to moderation.
Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
Bob Hartley has been named the #Flames new head coach. DETAILS ~ http://bit.ly/L9rydo
No. We are trading for Timonen to help the Flyers out.
Also, Nick Schultz had better scoring chance numbers than Gilbert. Who knew?
And look, lower QC numbers too!
I think that everyone likes it that Schultz is now an Oiler.
I think everyone feels he’s a good defenseman.
This includes those who question the trade that brought him here.
If Tambo had ADDED Schultz to a Gilbert-lead D, he’d be considered a frickin genius.
In fact, you’d probably be reading these comments on TamboTime; Lowetide just a distant memory.
Woodguy,
I see. In any case, it sure seems like a lot of youngin’s patrolling the OKC blue next season.
Great news on the Davidson signing.
Did Dat Sceptical Fellow get run out of here?
TSN reporting Hartley is the new coach in Cowpie.
Best of luck to the Flames next season, of course.
I was just pondering the possibility that Dependably Spurious & Fatuous was in fact my wife, just posting on LT’s site to be irksome.
If you are married, you will perhaps agree that your wife knows precisely how to be vexing, no?
My blocked comment was because I also mentioned D.S.F. – I guess LT got tired of his constant trolling and how it somewhat hijacked legitimate discussions.
What’s a “SC Dman”? it sure sounds good, but doesn’t seem to ring any bells. Unlike say, Bobby Orr, I don’t remember Gilbert being good enough to lead his team anywhere except down the standings. He was a member of a pretty fabulous defence foursome about ten years ago along with Souray, Visnovsky, and that other guy…but had a yellow streak a mile long that doesn’t exactly endear him to old timey hockey fans.
One wonders which other veteran Oilers were there to back him up: Horcoff? Smyth? Hemsky?
Shultz on the other hand not only outpointed TG, but provided a solid defensive presence, which, i suppose can’t be measured with your data, and therefore to you is meaningless.
Actually the more I look into Timmonen it looks like Philly should have no problem getting rid of him. Even though his cap hit is $6.3 he is only paid $3mill next year, so he could be a good pickup for a low budget team like Colorado or Dallas.
Right. And a proactive GM would make sure that team is us.
He does have a NMC though, which complicates things. But it is still very do-able and he would come at low cost. In fact, it might be possible to deal him at the deadline to a SC contender for more than what he cost.
Bears…LOL…Nice one GD. How many years before there’s a strong suggestion from Philly that Breezy go back to the motherland to play in the KHL? Although Russia has bears.
Ed Snider does whatever the hell he wants and then the NHL has to change their rules to accommodate his actions. That’s how.
Oh, certainly. But for me, trying to draw any kind of conclusions about from them is guesswork at best because that context is missing. So, my question becomes, why put them out there without the context? Doesn’t it just lead to people basing their opinions on bad stats?
Or in other words, if the context isnt’ there, is this any more valuable than +/-?
Woodguy,
Not sure he’s “young” anymore at 23.
If he’s not young anymore, what does that say about Samwise? Are kid gloves off for him too? I suspect if that’s the case, Trak will have a field day, but maybe considering how hard people have been sheltering him from criticism, this might be due. He’s still not part of the solution here.
——
Quite honestly, if Plante can get his skating to the point where he doesn’t look like Strudwick 2.0 up there, there’s a lot to like there. Both him and Teubert have some nice things coming along, and both of them, especially since both are not considered AHL Vets yet. There may yet be life for each in the NHL, if Teubs can get healthy and Plante gets mobile.
I’m excited to see what our young blue liners do next year in the AHL.
Mr DeBakey,
If only. I don’t think it’s a bad move, because I think Nick will command less money on his next contract than Tom, so there’s more value there, but that only presumes that he signs here, which remains to be seen.
spoiler,
Yeah he seems like he might be a better option for the Oil than overpaying Garrison or Wideman for 4 years. I think Lidstrom retiring just made them an extra Million a year.
By your logic all players on bad teams are bad.
Flush Hall, RNH and Eberle then, they finished 29th last year.
You cannot be serious.
Only Eberle is bad, because he’s not a number 1 overall draft pick.
Wow. 3 posts in a row getting moderated. Fun times.
Jordan,
You wrote three straight posts about D§F?
Ribs,
Na. 3 posts trying to link to TSN’s announcement about Hartley being the new coach in cow-town. One of which included a joke about trading Eberle and a second for Jack Johnson.
Didn’t mention Dashing Silver Fox once.
Ha!
Well done.
Jordan,
If he’s not young anymore, what does that say about Samwise? Are kid gloves off for him too?
Yes.
His 10pts in the last 25 games of the year getting good icetime with very good players was big miss on his part imo.
Ouch. The Oilers spent a first round pick on developing Strudwick 2.0.? That hurts.
