And you know I knew it. When a sports team says day to day but the coach and GM speak in hushed tones it’s never good.

As Woodguy indicated earlier in the thread below Gernat has had surgery–and not Oiler surgery in Edmonton. He went to the Czech Republic and had the operation (which I find curious but the article suggests the doctor is a respected surgeon).

Hell, this is bad news and there’s not one bloody way to put a shine on this item. Martin Gernat was well ahead of his draft number and a strong prospect on a deep team.

Now he’s a question mark. We wait.

Christ. Even when the Oilers don’t play games, they get bad injury news.

When’s the stretch of good luck going to start?

  2. Ducey says:

Meh. If its the Hemsky/ Hall surgery he will have it fixed now and hopefully it will not be an issue later.

From what I have seen he has a long ways to go defensively and needs to put on some weight. I would expect he would spend all his ELC in the minors. This will be a minor issue in 4 yrs (hopefully).

Did someone say the Oil were too deep at D?

  4. jp says:

Too bad indeed. And it is curious that he had the surgery in the Czech Rep (guess that’s why the Oil King guys didn’t seem to know exactly what was going on…).

  5. mumbai max says:

Why would it be curious that he had surgery in a highly developed country where
he was born and lives? Prague is about 100 times more sophisticated
    than Edmonton. Just sayin.

  6. Chris Hext---formerly EasyOil--- says:

Not to be pedantic, but the Czech Republic is not Gernat’s home country, Slovakia is. Don’t hate me!

  7. Lowetide says:

Mumbai: Most NA sports organizations like to have their players receive surgery under their watchful eyes and monitor early days. At least that’s been my observation.

Chis: Pathetic would be “look you dink, he’s from Slovakia–you even said that!” Douche” but corrections in content are always welcome.

    @ Ducey

Except we haven’t seen what Hemsky and Hall can do since their surgeries. Maybe meh, maybe “injury prone”. Hopefully indeed.

  9. Lucinius says:

Almost makes you think that during the lockout the Oilers shouldn’t allow their players to move an inch out of bed lest they get maimed somehow.

  10. RexLibris says:

Strange as this sounds, I’d rather he sit out a year of junior than develop like Hall or Smid with a nagging injury that cuts into his professional career.

Doug Lynch comparisons aside, I’m not too worried. Just disappointed.

I think we know what we have in Gernat, to some degree, and if he gets his shoulder fixed now at least he’ll likely only have one more he can screw up down the road.
