OIL KINGS V TIGERS

Edmonton Oil Kings take on the Medicine Hat Tigers tonight. The Tigers boast a phenom named Hunter Shinkaruk who is an outstanding draft eligible prospect–many believe he’ll be drafted before Curtis Lazar at the 2013 entry draft.

Oiler prospects Travis Ewanyk and Mitchell Moroz will continue their efforts to find time on skill lines, and the Oil Kings blueline hopes for a return for Keegan Lowe. Draft fans might want to pay attention to Cody Corbett and Ashton Sautner, two kids who were eligible but passed over at the 2012 draft.

One or both may end up being taken next summer.

Very fun game to watch. Lazar has not been overly impressive in the four games I’ve caught this year but he is a talent for sure. Shinkaruk has the potential to be a great complimentary player in the NHL. If he is still on the board when Anaheim picks they would be crazy not to take Shinkaruk due to his already established chemistry with Emerson Etem,

Moroz was ineffective, Ewaynk was solid and may end up being a solid 4th line player.

This is the first year I have paid any attention to the WHL and I have to say it’s been entertaining. The games are interesting to attend and there is always a great seat available. FYI next game on Shaw is on Oct 17th Everett @ Swift Current. Ryan Murray is the marquee player for Everett. I’ve never heard of anyone on Swift Current but I’ll tune in to check it out,

Didn’t you have a post a few months ago called small pools and it was about Edmonton selecting from.. small pools?

    So much for insider trading.

When they picked Moroz it seemed like a strange pick.

I was willing to give them a pass because he was an oil king and they must have seen something that just wasn’t apparent to those watching games.

At the development camp it was obvious that Moroz was lost when he had to deal with that little round thing called a puck.

The theory that the scouts were given free rein after being overruled on their real first choice makes sense to me.

If that theory is right it says volumes of how well our scouting picks will do after we stop picking first overall.

Henrik Samuelsson is humming along at a ppg. We should really try to swing a deal for his rights this year. We would have had a very different conversation if we’d managed to move up and nab him instead of Moroz.

Also keeping an eye on D Matt Finn, the player the Oilers should have selected at #32.
