OKC V SAN ANTONIO 19.10.12
The “future” is in OKC tonight against San Antonio. The Barons lineup has some changes from last weekend’s group and the twin phenoms have a new Don Ashby.
Starting forwards
- Nuge-Green-Eberle
- Arcobello-Tyrvainen-Pitlick
- VandeVelde-Paajarvi-Hartikainen
- House-Byers-Hamilton
A few comments on the lines: Green is the most experienced AHL forward on the club, has size and some skill. He might appear to be an unlikely fit but as with most things done by Coach Nelson there’s sound reasoning to the move. Suspect he’ll have success, bet we see that line a lot this winter.
Arcobello was to my eye the best forward on the team last weekend, so he gets a push and Pitlick remains in the top 6. Tyrvainen gives the line some toughness and physical play.
The 3line has two of the big prospects this year, along with VandeVelde. I’m not certain how much offense VV can provide but the other two should be able to generate chances.
4line has House with Byers and the almost forgotten Hamilton. These fellows are interchangeable with the healthy cuts, and in fact Martindale and Lander are certainly higher on the depth chart.
Pairings
- Marincin-Schultz
- Fedun-Teubert
- Ringwald-Plante
A more veteran group tonight. Nelson mentioned the other day how impressed he was with Marincin’s defense, so maybe that pairing will work this season. I like the 2pairing, they should be steady. Ringwald and Plante have experience and that should settle everything down. Yann Danis is the starting goaltender.

Khaira with an early assist for Michigan Tech tonight.
Lets go Barons!
PS hows Rieder doing?
rieder plays tonight, too. Game hasn’t started yet.
Not happy that Martindale and Lander are sitting, but I’d like to see the franchise make a decision on Arcobello, Vande Velde and House. I’d hate to see them lose one or two bona fide prospects at center because we took a “wait and see” approach to longshots.
Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like Martindale and Lander’s ceiling is higher than House, VV and Arcobello. I understand the need for AHL depth, and maybe I’m getting carried away over one game, but I’d like to see some development, espcecially in this lockout year.
Wow the audio better improve for the actual game, sounds terrible.

Nothing yet
Nope, audio still blows. I can’t believe video feeds like this still exist in this day and age.
Puck hasn’t dropped yet, anthem just started.
Wow the free feed is better than the one I’m getting from AHLlive.com, never again.
Schultz skates the puck deep into the offensive zone easily.
http://www.thefirstrow.eu/watch/147547/1/watch-ahl:-san-antonio-rampage-vs-oklahoma-city-barons.html
this feed works better on my mac
1-0 Rampage
JF Jacques on the powerplay! I never thought I would hear those words again.
No points for Nugeberle. They suck forever,
Fedun with a couple of nice hits in his own zone
Rieder with a PP assist early for Kitchener
Ebs with some nice moves but missed the finish
Can we start running them out of town yet?
I’ll make a bold prediction and say Rieder will see NHL action as early as next year
Taylor Hall has grown a lot in the off season, but he seems to be really slow out there. Must be the nagging injury.
Slick Goal by Marincin!
We ran them to OKC already.
And Katz to Seattle.
Marincin with a very nice goal and Hartikainen with skill on the assist
Never would have thought the shoulder injury would be such a detriment to his foot speed.
The feed I’m watching seems to be from the 80′s.
The quality of video and light is 80′s.
And the Baron’s defensive game is very 80′s, too.
I miss hating Khabibulin.
Schultz with the Shortie!
i am glad Schultz signed with the good guys.
Schultz (VandeVelde). that kid defender sure scores off the wrister.
omg Schultz with another beautiful snipe
RNH with a Taylor Hall-esque move to push thru the D and get a good shot on net
I think number 4 is Plante; I believe I read that Taylor Hall will be kept out of the lineup for at least two weeks while he conditions.
Which explains why he looks so slow
Wow nice shot by Schultzy…..this kid is gonna score some points!
What a great night to be able to watch some hockey! Instead of all the bitching about hockey that’s been going on for 4 days.
The Barons games will be my savior this year. Just booked my flights to Abbotsford for the Nov 9-10 game. Long weekend as well! Let me know if anyone else will be out there and I can come say hello and have a beer with you!
OKC doesn’t control the play as much as they should.
Not sure if serious or…
Not at all, in fact the first line is getting out worked at times.
Anyone listening to the announcer talk with a producer during the breaks? The producer knows nothing about hockey
Alex Plante is the only Baron that is -1. Did they leave him out there all by himself?
Thanks!
OilLeak,
No, I am serious. Hall will be kept out of the lineup for two weeks, then he is going to get his shoulder checked out again and see if he’s ready to enter the lineup.
Anyone know if a team has ever had two players nominated for the Calder in the same year?
I think the AHL is a pretty strong league. The 1line has been playing uphill tonight, to be expected imo. The PP is where they should shine, and with Green on that line it should be better.
I think Heatley and Kovalchuk were both nominated in 2001
Dean yes I was chuckling about that myself! Asking if there are lots of NHL players in the AHL. but I guess it’s not that surprising Oklahoma isn’t exactly a hockey-crazy market
delooper,
i don’t think OKC is playing that poorly.
San Antonio is a good team. playoff team last year and they are big and work the cycle well.
i’d say OKC is outplaying them everywhere but on that cycle.
Well aware that Hall isn’t in the lineup, Kris11 and myself were joking regarding Hall’s foot speed issues.
Deans123,
don’t worry, it’s just like lacrosse : ]
OilLeak,
Oh okay, sorry I thought you were seriously wondering. My bad!
I am watching the most gripping basketball game ever on the barons feed.
that Hartikainen pass was a beauty. I don’t know where he’ll land in the NHL (what line, scoring or checking) but he’s got some nice hands for a big man.
Doesn’t look like much of a crowd there for opening night. Maybe they’re all hoping for the car tomorrow?
dessert1111,
they’ve been hyping that damn car for months now, so i’d say yes.
I hope the producer and the announcer get in an off air fight. It would be great if they just started cussing each other out
Just once I want Pajaarvi to go inside instead of outside the defender on that drive
That was a nice shift.
Another assist for Rieder.
That looked familiar.
coverage poor there.
Dan Ringwald is not having a good game
LT, have you had a chance to see Rieder play yet?
The 1st line looks better with Paajarvi on it than Josh Green.
no. Looking forward to it.
Deans123,
Ya hilarious! The announcer said he didn’t think the rampage would get anymore goals!
Hartikainen (Schultz, NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE)
Schultz – - >> Too good for the AHL
I hate to sound like a broken record, but Schultz is so good.
OK goal by J Schultz and co!
Schultz is the class of this team, even more so than Nugeberle.
c’mon .. it was better than OK .. it was great!
Schultz oozes offense.
Too soon to sign Schultz to a 6×6?
power move by Harty from behind the net. Looks like he’s getting rewarded with 1st line time. He doesn’t look out of place either, looks to have gained a step from last week almost.
Hartikainen has certainly come alive in this game, seems to be moving much better than previous efforts
Sometimes I wish I was 20 again.
Another nice play by that Finnish kid. He’s doing alright tonight.
He’s no Granlund
Why do you say that LT?
Eberle just undresses that poor soul. Lol.
The Rampage guy in the black suit hyping the crowd looks like Ralph Klein. Maybe it is!
Cheerleaders.
OKC cheer squad?
Okay, this is more like what I was expecting.
Well you can still look at them, and just cuz you’re in your 20s doesn’t mean they’ll look back, trust me
Anyone see a pattern, like the parent club…….opposition goalies upping their play vs. the Barons, noticed it last week vs. Eerie.
EBERSQUEEEEE! Finally.
NUUUUGEBEEERLE!!
ho ho ho boy!
Not bad, not bad. Eberle (Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge)
There are those long over due(first 2 games you jokers) points!
Love the game, but hate the goal WOOOOOO!
They do that at the Canuckdome and it is the lamest piece o piss in the west.
Nice push by Arcobello and then nice hit by Tyrvainen. Gotta see more of that from both of them this game, they’ve been quiet.
Well, Hall is still a bust. Moreau was better than Hall will be.
Hard to do anything, when the golden kids get all the ice
That’s true, they havent had much ice time but I get the feeling there isn’t much of a leash to stay in the top 6/9, even in the lineup, so they have to make their case pretty much each shift. I’m pulling for both of them.
I’ll make a bold prediction and say that there will be NHL action as early as next year.
I’d trade them all for Toby Petersen.
Sam?
MacT, is that you?!?
no, not Sam.
He’s forgotten more about hockey than I’ll ever know.
You know this lockout isn’t so bad, I’m cheering for a winning team for the first time since spring 2006
So am I, but Arcobello is getting the shaft with his linemates as well. Unless Nelson is using Arcobello to shelter Pitlick to give him a boost.
Dessert1111: Ain’t that the truth.
Schultz is a brilliant offensive factor at the level. BRILLIANT!
Does everyone else have pretty much no sound?
Yeah. They buggered it up between periods.
ya, no sound.
No sound here either. Got the okc radio going via live 365 app. Bit of a delay but ok.
I imagine the producer is there to enable basic hockey rules to be shared with an audience not to familiar with hockey.
Any ideas where I could find the highlights? I could only listen to the game.
Thanks…working on a Damned mix CD. Almost 40 and being a punk lover the most of my life, I can’t see how they ever got past me…
Funny, I heard them at the Black Frog in Vancouver. An “Oiler Friendly” bar that isn’t owned by the Black DOg, but had people working there that worked in Edmonton previously. Great DJ.
I have sound, voices very low, annoying hum that is louder though.
B-Dog,
Will be up on oilers site usually an hour or so after the game.
The Damned? They were one of the first. I mean right at the beginning.
First UK punk band with a single, and first to the states…I know that now, and I consider myself a musicfile. Have a radioshow out here in the valley and everything.
I wish there was sound so I could hear them call harsky a “Gritty Finn” at least once.
I’ve long offered a service where, for a fee, I’ll call people up on Skype and recite media nicknames for hockey players. If you want in, give me your Skype ID and credit card number/expiry date.
2 shorties for Schultz!
Schultz is dangerous. From Laredo, apparently.
I worked at Parlee McLaws on the Syncrude file all the way through University…I know not to trust lawyer promises.
So that’s what it feels like to be rooting for a winning team.
Justin Schultz for President!*
*of Hockey Operations?
Schultz: 2-1-3 +5! Is that right???????????????????????
Ralph Klein doing interviews….lol.
Off-topic,* but I’ve always found that an unfortunate name for a law firm – full of McLawyers practicing McLaw by drafting McPleadings. Don’t know the first damned thing about the firm itself, which I’m sure is excellent, but if I need to make a Personal McDirective, I’ll go elsewhere.
* It’s my sound, man!
Cam Barker is in the lineup for the Texas Stars
“Steve Smith”,
Maybe I should have taken thst offer to see what schultz had to say
Suntory: Is your show streamed?
interesting perhaps to me only but both RNH assists were backhand passes from his knees behind the net.
teams need to learn you can’t leave him alone back there.
striatic,
In his office…(swoons)
Lowetide,
Yes. Tuesdays from 6-7 Pacific. Then all shows are instantly archived.
http://www.civl.ca we record out of the UFV campus. about 100 metres from where the Barons will play Nov 9 and 10.
My (and now my friend who shares the show) is called RagnaRock. My tagname is Professor Odinson.
I mostly play 90s alternative, but my buddy plays stranger things. We like to have a theme for each show.
the kid is a legitimate stud.
nixing the empty netter he was 1-1-2 +4 which is still excellent.
when he’s on the ice the puck seems settled and he has defensive chops despite not having them tested much tonight.
going to need to watch the highlights and see where he was on ice on the goals he didn’t assist.
For what it’s worth, this was Kitchener’s first home game of the season. From what I hear, this is due to construction at their home arena.
more from the highlights ..
PRV played a big role in Schultz’s first goal despite not getting an assist, gaining the zone with a nice chip and chasing it down shorthanded.
Schulz wasn’t a factor in the goals he didn’t assist.
OKC took major advantage of SA Centre Wellwood who was minus 4 on the night.
Just trying for an ironic understatement there. Damn fine pass that will work 4/5 times in the NHL too!
Sooner than needed, but may be not unreasonable. How has Schultz’s defense been? I only got to watch the end of the 2nd and the 3rd tonight. Didn’t notice him on D, which is likely a good thing… Very impressive offensive player!!
Nicely said LT!
Generally great to see a decent hockey game (at least in part). A comment or 2 earlier about the kids getting outworked, but I didn’t see any of that in the time I watched. OKC overall outshooting SA 2:1 on the game – hard to find much fault in that!
Was that intentional or a genuine mistake? Casey Wellman is the guy who got raped by the Barons tonight. I had to check to make sure it wasn’t our beloved Gagner comp K Wellwood who’d got torched. The Wellman kid appears to be a pretty decent hockey player in games not played tonight.
they were outworked along the boards a bit in the first, which in part led to SA having the extra PP opportunities, but after that it was smooth sailing.
jp,
my mistake, i meant Wellman.
I think it’s brilliant! Any time an opposition C goes -4 its a “Wellwood” and if it is -5 why that’s a “Kyle Wellwood!”
listening to how Justin Schultz plays, the reason why we traded for Nick Schultz, seems a little clearer……
to me anyway.
loosemoose,
We didn’t want our defensive corps to become unnecessarily good?
Laleggia with an assist tonight, 3sog
As LT said, it was an excellent and appropriate slip of the tongue! No need to apologize!
I think the lockout is going to be trouble for some of the veterans on the team. The 2nd tier prospects are all going to be heading into NHL camp hitting their stride while the veterans will likely be playing catch up all season long. Plus the kids are going to have a lot of chemistry. Some of the older players are probably going to feel a bit secluded since the team has been turned over to the young guns.
It will be interesting to see the difference between the players playing overseas and in the AHL and the players that are taking time off.
I’m sure there’s been a ton of posts on Schultz tonight but Marincin looked really good to me too. I knew he was good but he looks pretty close to the NHL already.
I already went to Nuge’s house and smashed all of his baby furniture and his crib. When he gets back to Edmonton and has nowhere to sit and nowhere to sleep, he will get the message!
The lockout I’m sure will leave a lot of the guys who aren’t playing a step behind. Can’t say I’m too concerned with the possibility of turning the team over to the kids sooner rather than later though. Most of the key players (at least up front) are among those playing during the lockout anyway:
Hall-RNH-Ebs
Yak-Gagner-Hemsky
Can’t say I’d be too disappointed if the other guys currently playing (Paajarvi, Hatrikainen, Lander and for that matter Petrell) take a spot from the likes of Jones, Eager, Hordichuk and co. I’m betting Belanger can’t possibly be any worse than last season (kinda looked like a guy who was playing his first game after missing TC all of last year anyway), and Smyth has badly run out of gas in the 2nd half of the past 2 seasons, so a late start may not be bad for him either.
Not quite as rosy on defense and in goal. Only Smid, J Schultz and Potter are playing now. J Schultz should have a running start for his rookie season, and being in game shape off the bat might allow Potter to keep his spot on the team. May be Whitney will be well served by more time to heal/train too?? Who knows?? Petry, N Schultz, Sutton and the goalies are just sitting. And I fear Peckham might be heeding the call of those cheeseburgers before his long summer is done…
On the balance though, the Oilers will likely fare better than the average NHL team due to the lockout. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see that soon, but the crappy Barons feeds will have to do in the mean time.
Ewanyk with a goal tonight, Moroz with the assist in a 5-1 win for the Oil Kings
Zhakov with another goal in a 3-2 loss
Rieder with 3 assists in a 6-2 win
Kahira with an assist in a 5-3 win
Laleggia with an assist in a 5-1 win
Simpson with an assist in a 5-0 win
K. Jones with an assist in a 4-0 win.
A decent point scoring streak of sorts except for a scoreless game this morning from the slumping Yakupov…
“Steve Smith”,
you think Tom Gilbert is better than i do.
I guess we will see how the Oilers fare in the next couple years.
wanna bet they do better then when ole Gibby minded the back end?
So Schultz was +5 on the night, with rookie partner Marincin matching him.
Wow.
I like how you’ll attribute that to the Gilbert-Schultz trade, instead of the assorted peripheral moves the Oilers made (one first overall pick, two more and Eberle maturing, Schultz signing, etc.).
But yeah, if the Oilers stop finishing in the basement, that will establish that Gilbert’s a lousy defenceman.
I’ve never understood the anti-Gilbert sentiment. Even before the 4m deal there was some hesitation to endorse. I suspect he has all his teeth, a clear sign he doesn’t care enough.
Lowetide,
I am not anti Gilbert. In fact, I suffered numerous barbs from the peanut gallery, as I tried to explain howGGinny would turn into a nice second pairing two way dman.
I think I am more pro NSchultz. I like the trade and, while I think it may have been a bit more than a hockey trade, will work out for both teams.
In other words, you thought he would regress?
Nick Schultz’s numbers prior to last year were decent, so he may rebound. But last year he was at best a third pairing guy, and it’s hard to imagine him rebounding to Gilbertian levels.
I think Justin Schultz is very exciting. I won’t buy that he’s a legitimate NHL defender until I see him play some NHL games, but it certainly looks like he might be. He may, in fact, be better than Gilbert (if not now, then down the road). But his presence doesn’t justify downgrading Gilbert to Nick Schultz, anymore than Yakupov means that we should trade Hall for second line talent.
It’s the shoes.
I’m a little leery of QualComp numbers and don’t think I could make the same statement about Schultz as you, “Steve”, or at least with the same level of confidence. And judging by the reaction out of Minnesota, he was certainly thought of more highly than a fringe NHLer by his coaches, teammates and fans.
That said, I think Gilbert is the better player and have difficulty justifying the trade. I and others have speculated here that there had something more to the trade than what we saw (a demand, some dressing room issue, family issue, etc)
I’ve speculated the same – it makes too little sense from a straight hockey standpoint, and the contracts are so similar that they can’t have been a factor. Add in the fact that Gilbert seemed thrilled to be going to Minnesota, and I do wonder if he had a hand in it (in which case kudos to all concerned for not letting it blow up into a Prongerian episode). Anyway, I’m not inclined to lambaste management too much for it, in case their hand was forced, but I can’t countenance the view that it improved the hockey team.
“Steve Smith”,
I get it. You really like Gilbert. Nothing wrong with that.
You say I thought he would regress, but I would argue at the time of me saying that, second pairing wasn’t a regression. Thats really not relevant though…..
I guess the biggest dissconnect here is I don’t think nick Schultz is that much of a downgrade on Gilbert.
If you do, that’s cool.
Time will tell, but I think both teams will look back and see this trade as good .
