GONNA RAISE A FUSS, GONNA RAISE RAJALA

If you’re 21, coming off a solid season in Finland’s SM-Liiga and your parent team sends you to Stockton, it might be easy to get a little down on things.

You have to chuckle when things like this happen. Rajala–skill winger prospect on a team that is drafting players at his position 1st overall every spring–decides to come over after a very good season in Finland (he led his team in goals, 16) and arrives in time to get buried by NHL players. Lordy.

However, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Rajala is having a nice surge here in Stockton lately, and if the NHL ever starts the season it is a safe bet that Rajala will see some OKC time this year. He’s 9, 6-5-11 +5 after yesterday and tied for 13th (of course) in league scoring. He is 5-5-10 in his last 5 games and has 40 shots for the season. Nice.

Oh, by the way, Jeremie Blain is off to a nice start too. Just sayin’.

I’ll have a GDT thread up at 5pm today, but Nail Yakupov is scheduled to play in the Subway Series tonight in G1. The QMJHL roster is here (there are some injuries) and the Russian roster is here. Our man wears #10.

So who is ahead of him on the depth chart as skilled RW? Eberle, Yakupov, Hemsky and Pitlick. This is not too bad. I must be missing someone.

i feel for guys like Rajala…too many wingers on the Oilers and not enough spots…same as Omark i suppose?

I think Rieder is primarily a RW and will also be in the mix. For all the critcism of “reaches” and not drafting “skill” I think the Oilers have plenty of smallish, skilled players in the pipeline. IMO the real shortage is big skilled centerman and I hope that is priority #1 for this years draft as there are a number of them out there.

I’m very interested to see how the league equivalencies play out for Rajala given the very unusual career path he has taken to date.

No worries, this will all be cleared up when the Oilers trade RNH and Yak for Luongo. Problem solved. You’re welcome!

Does anyone know if the super series is being televised or streamed???

  7. jfry says:

Fuzzy, all the games are on sportsnet this week

I see that Hemsky kid is doing ok. 16gp 11 10 21pts in the Czech league. Last lockout he went 31 in 47 in the same league. Hopefully that improvement is a sign of things to come in EDM.

    Also, Danis 3.13, .895. Roy 2.68, .915

So far this season, Danis hasn’t done anything to take Bulin’s spot.

  9. jfry says:

@ducey, i could be wrong, but i think with the KHL growing that we’ve seen a distinct drop in the quality of play in the cze league. i have nothing to base that on other than my cze friends complaining because they hate the KHL. those numbers are nice though

LT, have you done or will you do a grading on the 2009 class? JW has a Barons grading thread up at ON, and Paajarvi and Lander are not scoring……..starting to be a concern? If the lockout ended, who is going to score for OKC? Maybe Rajala comes to OKC at some point and continues the pace.

Just looking at MacKinnon’s stats…..just turned 17 Sep 1st, 18gp 18g, 12a, 30pts, +19……sheesh, can the Oil trade for balls on lottery day??

A friend asked me the other day whether the KHL is ahead of the AHL in terms of quality of competition.

I think it is… But it is a challenging comparison.

    Thoughts?

You never have any Herb Alpert videos on your website. Why’s that? Why the anti-Alpert prejudice? Lonely Bull would have been perfect for some Penner threads.

I actually tweeted Corey Pronman to ask him if the KHL is a more difficult league than the AHL, and he responded with, “Yes, by a wide margin”. Just one man’s opinion, but the guy sure seems to know his stuff.

…And Peckham signs with an ECHL team. At least he’s playing?

  15. PeOiler says:

I’m hoping to see 77 Jimmy Oligny get some decent ice time. Plays in all situations, and through 18 games leads PEI Rocket D-men in goals(8), points(15), +/-(+5), and PIM(49).
