KLEFBOM SURGERY

It was confirmed today that Oscar Klefbom is gone for the season and will have shoulder surgery. The story is here.

Klefbom’s skill set is a strong fit with the rest of the Oilers department of youth. While the forwards can roll offensively and Justin Schultz can join the party, Klefbom represents the strong defensive side of the future. You could compare his style of play to the original Boys on the Bus members like Kevin Lowe.

Its a setback, but I am often reminded about these shoulder surgeries being commonplace nowadays and recovery does seem to be close to 100% (better according to some).

The silver lining? Klefbom said he’s likely done with SEL hockey now, and will be in the Oilers organization (NHL or AHL) next season. It would be wise to give him a half season or more in OKC, but the Oilers don’t run their team that way. I suspect Oscar Klefbom will be in the opening night lineup for 2013-14 if he has a strong training camp.

Gary Bettman and the lockout boys might have something to say about that… Although to be hones I’m a hopeless optimist too. =D

lol. Man. I’m better this lockout than the last one, but it sure would be nice to type 12-13 a few more times!

So assuming this season is a wash, the Oilers will have J. Schultz for sure, potentially Klefbom, and an outside chance of Marincin as well on the blue to start next season. That’s going to make for a lot of chaos.

On a semi-related note, Ryan Murray proves he was who the Oilers really wanted to pick this June. Out for the season with a shoulder injury.

There is no way Marincin makes the NHL next season, except for a handful of games, way too much chaos in his game still and needs to develop that frame of his.

How about this somewhat possible (though still unlikely) scenario?

    Smid – Petry
    Schultz-Schultz
    Teubert-Klefbom
    Fedun/Musil

Presumably they’d get a defenseman for Whitney, Peckham or Potter, though. But imagine if they didn’t? Oooof.
