It was confirmed today that Oscar Klefbom is gone for the season and will have shoulder surgery. The story is here.
Klefbom’s skill set is a strong fit with the rest of the Oilers department of youth. While the forwards can roll offensively and Justin Schultz can join the party, Klefbom represents the strong defensive side of the future. You could compare his style of play to the original Boys on the Bus members like Kevin Lowe.
Its a setback, but I am often reminded about these shoulder surgeries being commonplace nowadays and recovery does seem to be close to 100% (better according to some).
The silver lining? Klefbom said he’s likely done with SEL hockey now, and will be in the Oilers organization (NHL or AHL) next season. It would be wise to give him a half season or more in OKC, but the Oilers don’t run their team that way. I suspect Oscar Klefbom will be in the opening night lineup for 2013-14 if he has a strong training camp.
