OKC V HOUSTON 3.11.12

Photo courtesy Rob Ferguson. All rights reserved. The OKC powerplay is helping a lot of these young forwards to pad their stats. How is everyone doing at even strength? The results may surprise you.

Lets start with the special teams.

POWERPLAY TOTALS, OKC 12-13

  1. RNH 7, 2-4-6
  2. Justin Schultz 8, 2-4-6
  3. Jordan Eberle 8, 1-4-5
  4. Magnus Paajarvi 8, 1-3-4
  5. Teemu Hartikainen 8, 1-1-2
  6. Mark Arcobello 7, 1-0-1

SHORTHANDED TOTALS, OKC 12-13

  1. Justin Schultz 8, 2-0-2
  2. Chris VandeVelde 7, 0-1-1

Schultz has been a big deal in both special teams, and Nuge + Eberle ignited the powerplay in a big way. Nice numbers too for Paajarvi and Hartikainen gets a little attention too on the PP.

EVEN STRENGTH TOTALS, OKC 12-13

  1. Teemu Hartikainen 8, 2-5-7
  2. Mark Arcobello 7, 2-4-6
  3. Justin Schultz, 8, 2-3-5
  4. Martin Marincin 8, 2-2-4
  5. Jordan Eberle 8, 3-0-3
  6. Ryan Martindale 6, 0-3-3
  7. Taylor Fedun 8, 0-3-3
  8. Josh Green 3, 1-1-2
  9. Magnus Paajarvi 8, 1-1-2
  10. Dane Byers 8, 1-1-2
  11. Krisitans Pelss 3, 0-2-2
  12. RNH 7, 0-2-2
  13. Chris VandeVelde 7, 0-2-2
  14. Tyler Pitlick 8, 0-2-2
  15. Taylor Hall 1, 1-0-1
  16. Teigan Zahn 1, 0-1-1
  17. Curtis Hamilton 5, 1-0-1
  18. Tanner House 5, 1-0-1
  19. Antti Tyrvainen 5, 1-0-1
  20. Brandon Davidson 6, 0-1-1
  21. Colten Teubert 8, 0-1-1

Now we know that Hartikainen has been getting the even strength push in terms of qual team since Josh Green went down, but those even strength totals are impressive. Arcobello has a very good track record for even strength scoring and that Marincin-Schultz tandem scores well again. Eberle has 3 goals at evens, Nuge a couple of assists and Hall scored his goal last night at even strength. We should expect those three to move up this list–and I think we should expect Paajarvi to score well here too.

Chris VandeVelde gets some credit here for solid play in a defensive role. He and Tanner House are auditioning for different job types than the rest of the forwards and their numbers won’t be reflected in the boxcars. Anton Lander does not appear on any list.

    Should be quite a game.

From the last post: that Hockey Wilderness blog is ridiculous. Wild fans have a special hatred for Taylor Hall that gets very biblical. Lot of mention of ‘hell’ and ‘satan’.

    2nd line winger!

  2. Gi JQE says:

Anyone know where I can stream from? I have been unsuccessful in streaming any of the OKC games so far..

    Tips?

Lowetide, has the lineup been released for tonight’s game?

    2nd line winger!

Yeah. So, how many wingers had a better goals per game ratio with at least forty games last year? Maybe fifteen or twenty?

  4. Lowetide says:

I actually haven’t seen many people ripping Hall. Most reasonable people see him as an outstanding young player with a small but building injury history.

  5. Lowetide says:

Eric rodgers hasn’t posted lineups yet, but did tweet “Not sure on lines, but projected scratches are Green, Davidson, Marincin, Lander, Martindale, Hall”

  6. PaperDesigner says:

Good grief, they’re playing Abney again?

I looked it up. Hall was 27th among all players for points per game amongst those that played at least 40 games. So, yeah. Second line player.

  7. Gi JQE says:

    Lowetide,

    Lander scartched back to back…

I don’t see the upside others seem to in him…

  8. Jesse says:

One interesting thing about this lockout is that you get more exposure on how the officiating is handled in other leagues. I’m quite impressed that the AHL rescinded Hall’s match penalty. I don’t think you’d *ever* see that sort of thing in the NHL. There was also another incident in another leage (KHL iirc) where after a particularly henious display of poor officiating the officials were suspended and demoted. I’m not sure if that was the KHL or the AHL. But again, you’d never see that sort of acknowledgement of error on the official’s part in the NHL. They should be taking notes.

  9. Jesse says:

Does any know what time the game starts MST?

  10. Lowetide says:

    6 our time, Jesse.

The Habs-Soviet game from 1975 is on HNIC for anyone interested. My severe dislike for the Habs blinded me to how good that team was.

  19. Hot Carl says:

Pitlick looks like he’s getting comfortable throwing his body around in a man’s league. Hope that kid works out.

  20. Chunklets says:

    Jesse,

That was in the KHL, after Lokomotiv Yaroslavl scored with 7 guys on the ice. IIRC, one ref got suspended for the season, and the other officials were sent down to the minors for the rest of 2012-13. The KHL has also suspended a goal judge for the season (can’t remember exactly what the bad call was there), and meted out unspecified discipline to several other refs for things like making the wrong judgement call in goaltender interference situations. They’re pretty hard on their refs over there…

  21. Rebilled says:

Commentator pronounces ‘spinneramma’ with a soft ‘a’, how fancy¡

  22. Jesse says:

Holy crap, I don’t think I’ve realized how big and fast Pitlick is before. On that last rush he sure showed some good speed.

  23. Acumen says:

This Johan Larsson kid’s a gamer. I like him.

  24. kinger says:

    LT,

Early returns on Schultz suggest he’s a difference maker in the “gain the zone with control” category.

Can’t have too many of those guys around.

  25. Lois Lowe says:

All of the drama on Hockey Wilderness got me to look up their record post-lockout. The saddest part is that the franchise has less playoff series wins than the Oilers do and only one more playoff appearance. They have clearly been a better team during the regular season, but that’s kind of like saying you’re marginally prettier than the ugliest girl at the dance.

I look forward to a good rivalry over the coming years; lord knows the Wild have eaten the Oilers’ lunch the last 5 or 6 seasons.

  26. Lowetide says:

I’m loving it. The entire Justin Schultz story has been a dream. A wonderful, crazy, Scarlett Johansson knocks on the door and I’m still single dream.

  27. Hot Carl says:

On an unrelated note, can someone explain how Visine works? Seems very unnatural. One minute I’m sitting in my study, frantically pouring a glass of sauvignon blanc into my face while staring with bloodshot eyes at my 40″ LG desktop montitor. The next I’m downstairs, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, charming our dinner guests with tales of past successes and future endeavors. Go Barons.

  28. fuzzy muppet says:

NOOOOOOOOGE. from some kid named Schultz

  29. Lowetide says:

    Nugnet-Hopkins (Schultz, Eberle)

  30. Matt.N says:

    Goal call

RNH (Schultz, Eberle) 19:07 2nd period. Even strength.

Schultz from his own end head mans the pass to RNH who penetrates deep into the offensive end. RNH pivot turns to lose his check and then passes off to Eberle in the corner . Ebbs puts it back to Schultz on the left point. The Houston winger pressures Schultz at the point. Instead of putting it deep, the “smart” play, Schultz simply accelerates by his man on the wide side. He works deep to the bottom of the circle. The defence comes off RNH to pressure Schultz. RNH goes to the top of the circle and takes the backhand pass from Schultz. RNH loads and fires a wrist shot by the goalie.

  31. OilLeak says:

Eberle dekes out the whole Aero team, wow.

  32. Lowetide says:

McCarron with an assist and 7 sog on tonight for Cornell

  33. Lowetide says:

Khaira and Laleggia also have assists tonigth.

  34. dessert1111 says:

Barons have had some good chances tonight but overall I’m finding the game a bit boring. In fact, these last few games have seemed like the Barons haven’t had a whole tonne of shots.

  35. striatic says:

    dessert1111,

Danis has really been keeping them in this, much like last game.

Let’s see if the Barons replicate last game’s 3rd period break down as well..

  36. Matt.N says:

RNH, Eberle and Schultz look like they don’t belong in this league. Plante, Hamilton and Tuebert look like they belong in this league.

Teemu looks right at home on the LW with Nuge and Ebs. He really seems to have found his role.

  37. delooper says:

The Barons have a fair bit of trouble getting the puck out of the zone. Not always, but a lot of the time. Schultz can walk the puck out of the zone on his own. But they get locked-in the defensive zone too often given their skill.

  38. fuzzy muppet says:

Plante will never be an NHL player. He simply can’t skate. Another blown 1st round pick for the Old Oiler scouts.

  39. dessert1111 says:

It seems like the Barons have the same problem on D that the Oilers do, too many 6-7 guys and not enough skill. Could really use another guy to play top pairing, why on earth is Ringwald paired with Schultz

  40. striatic says:

i missed the first 10 seconds .. how’d Eberle get open like that?

  41. Lowetide says:

I remember so well the day Plante was drafted. I wanted Gagner or Voracek at #6, so after that it didn’t really matter to me (I’m a fan, but realistically what the hell do I know about the 15th best player in any draft?).

Anyway, I’m at Schanks when they take Gagner, and after that I’m having a beer and mocking Guy Flaming (he’s going the live show with Bob Stauffer on Team 1260). But I gotta go, and now Guy is motioning me over because he knows I’m sneaking out.

He says “Oilers are high on Plante, I think they take him at #15.” And I know Plante has skating issues because a buddy of mine who knows more about hockey than I’ll ever know told me he turns like a barge.

  42. OilLeak says:

The D can’t make a pass out of the zone with the exception of Schultz and Fedun. Plante is too slow, and makes poor decisions under pressure. Zahn constantly makes poor passes and is error prone. Ringwald isn’t particularly good at anything. Teubert is still wildly inconsistent and doesn’t clear the zone particularly well, he still has some time to improve , but it’s still a wait-and-see approach.

  43. Lowetide says:

    Eberle the great (5).

  44. dessert1111 says:

The VandeVelde line seems to have shooting vomit. Him and Hamilton always seem to shoot right when they get to the top of the slot, and it’s better than no shot getting off in the zone, but they seem to be low percentage ones and then they lose possession

  45. dessert1111 says:

All this is very correct. It’s a bit painful to watch at time. If they got one or two more puck moving defensemen or ones with a good first pass I think you’d see the Barons scoring a whole lot more. When Teubert is your third best puck mover, you have a problem.

  46. dessert1111 says:

    Eberle made them look silly

  47. spoiler says:

Let’s not forget Marincin would normally be in the line up.

MPS gets Billy Smithed. Eberle finishes.

  48. fuzzy muppet says:

Shooting percentages be damned. Eberle’s hands are otherworldly. He is unreal

  49. Lowetide says:

Eberle is a freak. Man, that guy. I believe Nuge and that defenseman no one can remember the name of get the a’s.

  50. dessert1111 says:

He’s slowly been showing more of his skills game to game. In on all three points tonight. RNH, Eberle Schultz combine for the 2nd time tonight. I guess this is what we’ve been expecting.

  51. OilLeak says:

    spoiler,

Too early to know what Marincin will become, but he definitely has the skill and passing ability to make a difference. Hopefully his defensive game comes along with a little more experience.

  53. spoiler says:

    fuzzy muppet,

The Aero announcer is beginning to annoy me.

  62. dessert1111 says:

They should just run RNH Eberle Hartikainen Pajaarvi Schultz the rest of the game. I know they’re not on the powerplay, but hell let’s try Pajaarvi on the point even strength why not. No line changes.

  63. fuzzy muppet says:

    OilLeak,

And he’s been responsible for the last two GA

  64. dessert1111 says:

Nice offensive play there. Just no finish.

  65. Matt.N says:

How bad is it that the Oilers have started him in 17 games?

  66. OilLeak says:

    fuzzy muppet:
    OilLeak,

And he’s been responsible for the last two GA

Maybe Vandevelde sits in favour of Lander in the next game.

  67. fuzzy muppet says:

    dessert1111,

    If only!

  68. dessert1111 says:

Well if this goes to a shootout you’d think the Barons have the advantage. Hell wouldn’t mind seeing one.

  69. OilLeak says:

Matt.N: How bad is it that the Oilers have started him in17 games?

Almost as bad as dressing Lander for 56 games when he can’t crack the AHL line-up on a consistent basis.

  70. fuzzy muppet says:

Stupid lockout is getting me riled up about minor league hockey!

  71. Matt.N says:

3 EVS goals by OKC. Schultz, Ebs and RNH are +3.

2 EVS goals by Houston. CVV and Dane Byers -2.

Pretty much the story of the game

  72. Matt.N says:

MPS drives the net and bumps the goalie. Seems to be surprised this earns him a face wash. Get your hands up young man! Protect yourself at all times.

  73. dessert1111 says:

I like the whole OKC has been utilizing Paajarvi’s skills. A third line winger, first unit PK and first unit PP point. He looks good there.

  74. dessert1111 says:

Eberle RNH Schultz? Arcobello and Paajarvi?

  75. Matt.N says:

CVV on a short handed 2on 1 with 20 seconds left. Doesn’t get a scoring chance or IATA the very least get it deep. Turns it over at the blue line. Houston gets it back to the other end and misses a glorious chance with 2 seconds on the clock. Defensive forward my ass.

  76. dessert1111 says:

    well that was embarrassing

  77. striatic says:

    pathetic.

  78. OilLeak says:

Well that was a bitter loss.

  79. Jesse says:

    What a brutal shoot out.

  80. dessert1111 says:

Guess I’ll see you guys tomorrow where the Barons will hopefully keep playing after 40 minutes for a change…oooff

  81. striatic says:

i know it is just an AHL game but .. who cares .. that was shameful and Danis in particular deserved better.

if these players are going to be champions at any level they need to put games like this one away. routinely.

  82. Lowetide says:

Can’t blame the team. once again, the Oilers organization has a defense that can’t play at level. That’s on the management, folks. Just is.

  83. OilLeak says:

    Lowetide:
Can’t blame the team. once again, the Oilers organization has a defense that can’t play at level. That’s on the management, folks. Just is.

Zahn and Ringwald shouldn’t be anywhere near the AHL as it stands and some of the AHL vets need to give their heads a shake as well

  84. delooper says:

If only they could bring Smid and Petry down to OKC.

  85. DSF says:

    delooper:
If only they could bring Smid and Petry down to OKC.

If only the Aeros could bring Suter and Gilbert down to Houston.

  86. David S says:

Think things are bad now? How screwed will the Barons be when the lockout is over?

  87. RickDeckard says:

    David S:
Think things are bad now? How screwed will the Barons be when the lockout is over?

Their defense might be less exposed when only the AHLers are left.

  88. Marc says:

    Lowetide:
Can’t blame the team. once again, the Oilers organization has a defense that can’t play at level. That’s on the management, folks. Just is.

Out of curiousity, what exactly would you have done differently if you were in charge? Because it doesn’t seem to me like there was actually much room to maneuver this season.

Schultz is guaranteed a spot as long as the lock out lasts.

Fedun almost made the big club last season and has the organisation’s full support as he recovers from his injury, so he was never going to the ECHL.

Teubert , Plante and Ringwald are all AHL vets who performed well on a playoff team last season. Plante was an AHL all star. How easy would actually be to bring in AHL vets who are clear upgrades on the AHL vets the Barons already had? And as Teubert is also one of the Oilers key D prospects, I doubt he would be going anywhere in any event.

So that’s five of 7 D spots locked up from the outset. Davidson has no junior eligibility left so he had to go to either the ECHL or the AHL. Marincin could play another year of junior I think. Is that what you think the Oilers should have done then – kept Marincin in junior, put Davidson in the ECHL and brought in AHL vets with no future with the Oilers in to the Barons in their place?

  89. Lowetide says:

Marc: I would have signed Brandon Davidson and Jeremie Blain and sent them to Stockton until injuries hit. The AHL definition of a rookie for their league is the following:

Players who enter the season with fewer than 25 games of professional experience in North America (NHL or AHL) or fewer than 100 games of experience in a European elite league qualify as an AHL rookie.

    The Barons have:

    1. Justin Schultz (9 games)
    2. Taylor Fedun (9 games)
    3. Martin Marincin (8 games)
    4. Brandon Davidson (6 games)
    5. Teigan Zahn (2 games)

    1. Colten Teubert (9 games)
    2. Alex Plante (6 games)
    3. Dan Ringwald (5 games)

So, that’s 36 games for rookies, 21 for AHL veterans. 63% of the Barons total GP (or basically two of three pairings) is/was a rookie.

The Barons have room for an AHL rookie right now, they could go out and acquire one today. Ryan Parent is available, Norfolk just cut him loose. The AHL is a tough damn league, and the Oilers badly miscalculated the strength of their defense.

    Again!
