KINGS AT OILERS, G3 (12-13) 24.1.13
These two organizations will be forever connected by the Gretzky trade. The deal–in the opinion of many–changed hockey forever. Looking back on the days of summer 1988, the thing that stands out is the quotes from the principal players.
- Peter Pocklington: ”Wayne has an ego the size of Manhattan. ‘I understand that though. If people had told me how great I was day in and day out for 10 years, I’m sure my ego would be a pretty generous size, too.”
- Peter Pocklington: ”He’s a great actor, I thought he pulled it off beautifully when he showed how upset he was. ‘I think he was upset, but he wants the big dream.”
- Gretzky on Pocklington’s comments: ”I’m not going to get into a war of words with anybody from Edmonton. ‘But if that’s what he thinks, then I’m very disappointed. ‘I’m grateful for what the Oilers did for me for 10 years. I’m proud to have been an Oiler, and people who know me and are friends of mine know the statements aren’t true.’‘
- Edmonton Mayor Lawrence Decore: ‘It’s like taking all the bridges away and saying, ‘Edmonton, this is what you’re going to look like.”
- Los Angeles drew 452,248 fans to 40 home games last season, putting the team next to last in the 21-team league. (Detroit was No. 1 with 785,532; Edmonton was sixth with 678,270 and Vancouver was last with 440,095.)
- At the news conference in Edmonton, Pocklington portrayed himself as a somewhat reluctant participant in the deal.

In later years the Oilers and Kings have done business, with Lubo, Ryan Smyth and the pick that turned into Oscar Klefbom the major players coming to Edmonton and Jarret Stoll, Dustin Penner and Colin Fraser heading the other way for the Cup rings. Its funny, the Gretzky trade shook the foundation but Lombardi’s gathering of Oiler talent for the big run is impressive in its own way. I’m glad the Kings won the Stanley, and was impressed when they brought back Rogie Vachon and Marcel Dionne to help celebrate it opening night. A lot of people wondered why 99 wasn’t there, but for me bringing the old guard in was a reminder that champions and all time greats should never be measured by number of Stanley’s won. Greatness can exist on a mediocre or poor team, Oiler fans 92-now must know this to be true.
–
As far as I know, there won’t be any lineup changes tonight:
- Nuge-Hall-Eberle
- Gagner-Yakupov-Hemsky
- Horcoff-Smyth-Hartikainen
- Belanger-Paajarvi-Petrell
- Smid-Petry
- Schultz-Schultz
- Whitney-Potter
- Dubnyk
One thing the Oilers need to do tonight is stay out of the penalty box. Especially early. The game was in peril by the time Taylor Hall took his second shift, that’s craziness. Also, with the Kings defense decimated, the speed demon forwards need to push on the forecheck and try to get their blue to make mistakes and take penalties.
The Oilers have two outstanding PP units. Can we mail one back to MacT a decade ago?
–
The Barons lines and pairings were interesting last night. With two new arrivals, I was interested in seeing who would get pushed down the lineup:
- Arcobello-Green-Cheechoo
- Lander-Rajala-Pelss
- Martindale-Byers-Tyrvainen
- VandeVelde-Hamilton-House
- Brett Clark-Taylor Fedun
- Martin Marincin-Nathan Deck
- Kane Lafranchise-Colten Teubert
The ‘AHL veteran’ line is joined on defense by newcomer Brett Clark (also and AHL veteran) and Taylor Fedun, the most capable of the Oilers D prospects this season. Its interesting to see Rajala-Pelss pushing through (and on a line with Lander) past the others, and both had good games (Pelss 5 shots, Rajala an assist and 4 shots).
Marincin had his best game in a long while and flew several sorties into enemy territory. He resembled the player we saw in the fall, and scored (1-1-2) for the first time in forever.
Olivier Roy stopped 33 of 37. If I had to guess about callups, I’d go with F’s VandeVelde and Arcobello, and Fedun and Teubert on D. Brett Clark may find his way into that conversation soon.

Fistric draws penalty #3.
Have they made #45 jerseys yet?
The Oilers have yet to lead a game at any point this year.
Fantastic sequence by RNH on that shift. Hall didn’t support at all.
Make Fistric the Oiler’s captain already.
You know, it’s 1-0 LA with 13 minutes left in the period and you’re wondering why the score is so low and the game has slowed down. Then you remember this is Brent Sutter hockey.
7 power plays per team so far. Over half the game at this point.
With the exception of the Nick Schultz double brain fart, the defense has been a lot better, as well, tonight. Liking Fistric a lot. Don’t see him getting subbed out after this.
Time for the PP to connect.
Pat Quinn loves Fistric.
Lucinius,
No chance. Potter is only in if they sit Whitney
Ah, Fraser. I remember when people were saying you couldn’t win in the playoffs with him as your fourth line center (when he was here).
Oilers being given chances. Don’t seem to believe
This powerplay has to bloody score, with all our talent. I know the Kings PK is excellent, but still. We need the goal!
No way this team should go 0 for 7 on the pp. Krueger has some work to do.
That brings me back, to the days when some people were delusional enough to think a 4th line centre was the difference between the Oil and the playoffs.
I might even have been one of them.
Krueger isn’t doing the special teams this year, btw, apparently. Someone else is doing that job. Which is just dumb.
Other than the Oilers not scoring, there are some good things happening out there.
Quick is looking like a wall. He simply doesn’t allow any rebounds.
Sheesh I keep getting logged out when I refresh…aya. Good game so far gentlemen and ladies? Haven’t been able to keep up too.
Krueger can’t fix the bad ice.
Pajaarvi just got drilled twice in the offensive zone. The first time he seemed stunned, the second time he simply quit playing.
It’s going to be fun watching him get run out of the NHL.
OIlers = Darwinism at it’s finest.
Because I’m like that: that is nothing like a wall.
this is a very frustrating game to watch.
wonderful that Quick picks tonight to get his game back.
lots of broken sticks and fanned shots from the Oilers, who look like the better team. not that it matters.
That’s another BS call. Stick checks are illegal now
Do you think maybe that now that they’re getting their new arena they’ll turn the ice-not-suck-o-matic back on for the rest of their time at Rexall?
Best game I’ve ever seen Ryan Smyth play since returning.
He’s going to win that cup with the Oilers, lol.
An they miss a blatant too many men penalty AARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH
Dubnyk has been exceptional!
You know, we’ve probably only been clearly outplayed one period this year (maybe two – I didn’t see the first period against Vancouver). But at some point we probably need to win games.
Good Road game by Kings. All their stars playing playoff hockey. More growing pains for Oil
bookjLe,
now if he can find consistency…
Honestly, this has been a good game by the Oilers, overall. Only issue has been the lack of production by the powerplay. Krueger needs to take charge of it again, imo.
If the Oilers play this well every night, they’ll win their share. The Kings have been terrific tonight, Doughty and Kopitar have skated miles and Quick is the best player on the ice.
A final PP.
Eberle’s stickhandling is something to watch. Like silk.
the last two periods against SJ don’t count. they got up by five and intentionally coasted to the win.
this game is frustrating but this is how LA wins regular season games now, especially last year. they’ll give you chances but not great ones, and win by a goal.
Have. To. Score. On. This. Powerplay. Cannot emphasis it enough.
Well if bucky is running the pp that would explain alot
Proud of the effort tonight. Tough break catching the Champs coming off losses. They’ve hung around with a real good team.
Win or lose, they’ve been very good tonight
Which period?
pull dubnyk now.
bookjLe,
I was talking in aggregate terms – obviously there hasn’t been any one period during which we were obviously outplayed.
….
Third time a defenseman has saved a goal for the Kings in the game.
Sweet Jesus YESSSSSS… really nice work by Gagner lol
edit: WOW WTF Quick didn’t even try to get back in the net.
FUCK YEAH!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NUGE WITH A NUGGET!
Eberle. Truly magnificent player.
The highs, the lows, the drama unfolds. This is why we watch sport.
Nice
They missed a obvious penalty on gagner. That’s Karma….
PunjabiOil,
Personally, I watch for the reffing.
Yes!
Wow, whenever a few Oilers learn how to win some faceoffs, this will be a dangerous team.
WTF
Obviously
ANd they are screwing them AGAIN
FINALLY!
What?
About three penalties on that play.
BS
Horcoff’s authority helps the refs make the correct decision, as usual.
Ok, I am starting a fund for the $10,000 fine that Kruger gets after the game!
WTF!?
worst. game. ever.
Absolute horseshit…….I haven’t been this mad since the Mcgoof hand pass call
Sigh…maybe I’ll get to watch the Battle of Alberta at least…I always miss the exciting things…
The oilers should just walk out. I am pretty sure Katz will pay the fine.
This reffing is like Enrico Pallazzo in reverse.
ridiculous.
Unbelievable. And I suspect we’ll see a delay of game call for the crowd throwing stuff on the ice.
Just unbelievable.
Refs remember who paid them, apparently.
These refs are unprecedentedly bad. They’re going to need an airlift out of Rexall.
That’s what the fans said.
You still can’t call it after the play. There is no instant replay for interference.
That’s the capper of a total horseshit night of refereeing.
OIlers/Kings rivalry is back!
Ridiculous
I am sincerely surprised that we didn’t.
In a way, its fitting. This game was a clusterfuck from the word go. And the refs took it out of the players hands. Lordy.
so Gagner gets pushed into the goalie, trapped in the pad trying to get out, and gets goalie interference for not being able to get out quickly enough?
I think it is the worst ruffed game I have seen in the NHL.
He clearly signalled a goal. You can’t review a penalty. This is blatantly wrong. FFS.
I just heard Mike Johnson say “a break for the Oilers”. Haha.
A moral victory!
YAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yakupov with the Baseball Swing.
Yak!!!!!
Fuck me! Just fuck, wow, sorry Jesus wow!
Wow. Yak says FUCK YOU refs.
Holy shit!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO
That one’s for you, zebra.
LEGEND!!!!
Ha! Yakupov is going to be a happy guy in Edmonton.
This team has character! After the refs nearly screwed them out of a point. BRAVO!
Karma is such a bitch
Fuck, I love 64.
Schultz to Hall to Yakupov! We might hear that again.
He obviously never watched historic games he would never have imitated Fleury there.
Forgiven.
HOLY LIVING FUCK!!!!!!!!
OHMIGODYAAAAKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game is awesome.
Kruger a little excited there behind the bench too. Anyone else notice the slap that SS got?
WOW. Just… wow. WOW.
Thank goodness.
Love the guitar slide at center ice!! That kid is crazy.
Effin Oilers, should come with a drfibrillator
What a stupid game, great hand eye under pressure like that
I didn’t even see it and I’m pissed!
Great celly!
Love this kid
We should get minor league refs all the time, this has been a fun game so far.
mother. of. god.
ow ow
There’s an 80′s Oilers moment… reincarnated 20 years later. Wow.
Surorised it wasn’t called a high stick
Great call by Coach K to put Belanger out for the draw.
I even like Shawn Horcoff right now.
Pls stop the fleury comps
Belanger didn’t get an assist on that, but a key unsung hero in that face-off win.
Got em on the ropes, lets win this!!
Odds they call the goal no goal–put in with a high stick–during the break?
I say 50/50.
now win, dammit. win.
Ice Sage,
So help me God, I always kind of liked Fleury.
Refs conducting a bittersweet symphony
On the Live Update, it says the goal was disallowed due to a player being in the crease – was that reincarnated in the new CBA?
Whitney! LMAO
Steve Smith would be a secret Flames fan.
Johnson doesn’t like the call!!!
This game has been unreal.
It’s game three! and it feel like #82 with a playoff birth on the line…
Eberle…SHOOT THAT!
I LOVE 64.
“Steve Smith”,
Yeah, he’s improved with age and Gagner!!!!
FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!
Whatta game
I was wondering when the hell someone would go to the net. Thanks Sam.
And Gags with a fuck you to his haters.
Oilers with a fuck you to the refs.
Lol, nuts!!
They bloody well deserved that.
This was against the defending Champions, right?
I like these new Oilers. Great F’ing game.
Justice.
I’m exhausted.
Wow, craziest Oilers game in years.
Awesome win. Refs can’t keep us down.
The Oilers are out of the doldrums. No more bottom-feeder Oilers no no no.
I’m sure Gags was in the crease again
Welcome to the 2013 Oilers!
goodnight refs!
Sweet. Baby. Jesus.
Lowetide,
time for a scotch
that game was sick.
We’re not out of the woods yet – give ‘em half an hour or so.
Sam’s a gamer tonight. Dirty cross-check on Doughty, victim of the dumbass call by the ref, hero on the play to the night.
What a game.
I’m looking forward to the Sportscenter recap…
Edit: disappointing. I don’t think Hedger watched the game
Crazy balls.
The hero of this game? Dubnyk kept them in there until Yak and Gagner could put those pucks in. Good bounce back performance.
How’s this for irony… terrible refereeing made for a great game.
That game went from stupid to magical. I don’t even know what to say about that Yakupov goal
What a freaking game. My wife and I were yelling so loud at the television, with so many profanities that the kids came down to make sure we weren’t fighting with each other! The dog was hiding!
And then Nail scored and it got worse. Thank God it wasn’t on video.
Fucking kids, they’ll be the death of me (not mine, the Oilers).
Hell of a game by Dubnyk.
Gagner 17% on the dot – I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that from a natural centre.
Hall had a good game
It appears Yakupov is a major clutch player like Eberle. Wow.
Remember that first no goal when Yak shot the puck into the net after the re(tards)fs blew the whistle early….where Quick came out and gave lip to Yakupov?
SOOOO fitting that Nail was the one to save the game in the last couple seconds.
I haven’t run around the house cheering for over 20 years.
Okay, looks like the Gagner goal’s going to stand – whoo!
I don’t understand why they don’t just have a winger take the draws.
I love Yakupov and his celebrations. After all that bullshit from the refs, time clock.. he reacts again like he just won the lotto, had a baby, won the Stanley Cup and single handedly won WW2 all at the exact same time.
Nice work by Gags tonight. Liked Paajarvi as well. Fistric was a calming effect on D. Smid had an interesting, but good game. Dubnyk was solid, with the only goal against a fair one to give up (beat on a breakaway by a fantastic shot).
But Yakupov! Wow.
This game was epic. Throw in a bench brawl and it’d have had everything.
Or a defenceman. Or Yann Danis, or Ralph Krueger. How much worse could it get?
Hey, how about this unsung hero for the Oilers – Devan Dubnyk!
I do not think that “unsung” means what you think it means.
(Seriously, search this comments page for “Dubnyk”, and tell me how you get “unsung” out of that.)
The oldest player on the ice for that winning goal was the senior citizen Gagner at 23. Fun.
I mentioned the other night the OT options for Krueger are multiple. I know it was PP goal but I don’t see this team going to too many shootouts.
Well for me, Dubnyk, Schultz, Petry, Fistric, Nuge, Gagner, Hall, Yakupov and Paajarvi had strong games. So, our weak spot is RW!!!!!
i forgot that first stoopid no-goal.
the refs really were well and truly atrocious.
17%
Those were typed.
Lowetide,
Except MPS played RW! There’s one RWer in your list!
Man, that celebration by Yakupov will probably get roasted by the Toronto media tomorrow, but even TSN’s Flames’ correspondent loved it, given the circumstances with the refs.
We are in the playoffs!!
I’ve never questioned your math.
RNH can not handle this many minutes, or the tough ones for that matter. Not sold on him 5 on 5 yet.
Hemsky and the second line is not getting enough ice time. Gagner only got a lot because of the penalty kill.
There is nothing wrong with the top line getting 20 and the second getting 18. Why is Krueger putting that much on them. They aren’t as creative as they were with less time. I know they need more but this is too much too soon.
Also the second pp unit looks more dangerous. Yet after a long shift by the first line, the second line goes out for ten seconds draws and penalty and gets pulled off the ice. The first line is tired and the penalty gets killed off with ease.
Kruger looks like a genius on a lot of things but there is still lots to work out.
Lucinius,
I’m sure the MSM is hacking away at keyboards as we speak trying to say what an arrogant, disrespectful Russian move that was
Imagine this team with Streit instead of Whitney.
48 percent body fat,
You do realize there was like a million penalties that game…
The only thing that would have made this win better would have been if I could hear Rod call it. I can’t even begin to imagine what would have come out of his mouth tonight.
Fleury liked Yak’s celebration. Said it was the best 3rd game celebration he’s ever seen!
after a goal of that quality, in a situation like that, you gotta give the guy some poetic license.
damn, that celebration wasn’t cocky, it was magical.
slightly less bad?
Tikkanen would have had a good night.
I like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cHB3Rbz1OI
What a mess of a game. Lots of fun stuff to watch in this game but the thing that made the biggest impression with me is Justin Schultz. I can’t believe this guy is in game 3 of his NHL career. Smoothest guy on the ice at times tonight, and that is saying a lot!
now that’s just cruel.
crazy, crazy shit… I don’t think I’ll sleep tonight…
that felt like a playoff game from start to finish… all the chances, the tension, the quality goaltending, the refs and their weird ideas… just.. nuts.
live sports… hell of a thing.
RNH also holds his stick wrong.
Damian Cox and Don Cherry should be particularly entertaining.
bookjLe,
So 83% as good?
I guess there’s a first time for everything.
Wow, been a long time since a oiler game left me speechless.
Yakupov, may he forever be an Oiler.
Lowetide,
Lot of swearing around these parts too. wow.
God love that Russian kid, that celebration is absolutely terrific.
Coach K on Yak: “He’s watched a lot of soccer games.”
I could watch it all night.
I just watched the last few minutes of the game again and yes, it was that freaking awesome.
Yakupov Jersey’s will be flying off the racks tomorrow.
my wife and i went ballistic so many times, the cat went into hiding and both our voices are hoarse.
Here ya go… http://theoddmanrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/YakupovCelebrates.gif
Any shit talk on twitter from anyone and I will be going for my first twitter block.
Still wired, honestly. Granted, I woke up just before the game, but for all the vitriol I was spewing in my mind at the screen during the game, for the Oilers to actually win the game in the fashion they did? Just wow.
This team looked fantastic for large enough parts of the night (except that damnable powerplay) against a Kings’ team back in form. Sure, there’ll be more games like the San Jose game than we’d like this year.. but in previous years I just don’t see them pulling out the Vancouver and L.A. games like they have.
