OKC V CHARLOTTE 12.1.13
There have been more than 20 transactions in the AHL so far today, none involving the OKC Barons. I think the Oilers would like to see a little better performance from their callups before punching their ticket to the NHL–and that sure as hell should come tonight. A 7-0 game that featured a lot of “waving” of sticks and a thousand “also in photo” events is an outstanding coaching tool and one would bet money Todd Nelson used it to his best advantage. Delaying flights north to the promised land (only in hockey can we describe Edmonton in January as a sanctuary) is likely an attention-getter and a fine one at that.
They give away a car every Saturday night at the Barons games, and based on the crowds there’s an insane chance to win. One story we’re all following this season is Brandon Davidson’s recovery from cancer treatment. What a terrific young man. God speed.
Todd Nelson has (for the most part) been straight up in his assessment of the young prospects in OKC. The latest from him on Teemu Hartikainen is exactly what we should look for when a player is called up to the NHL.
- Nelson: “He’s a guy who needed to be here and work on his game. He’s gotten a lot better in a lot of different aspects. He’s interesting. He’s pretty versatile. He’s developed into a good player on the power play in front of the net. If given the opportunity, I think he’s ready to make that jump.”
A nice pre-game look is here, and this is another outstanding resource for OKC info.
Lineups when they arrive, and don’t worry prospect fans they can’t scratch all of the draft picks, at least until they sign a few more PTO’s.

I wonder if this is the schedule?
http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=60153&d=1358025645
Tencer says away Sunday at Vancouver, home to san jose Tuesday, home to LA Thursday, then away for sat night in Calgary.
Ugly game last night – glad I watched basically none of it (got it on in the background long enough to hear the score go from 2-0 to 5-0, then wasn’t overly interested in watching the remainder of the mess).
Hopefully they can get some reinforcements in before long, though we’re likely looking at more of the ECHL types they’ve brought in already. Not sure where anyone better would come from. Maybe the big club can swing a trade for some depth/AHL help…
And from the artfulpuck link – Helmer will not be coming back to OKC: http://artfulpuck.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/bryan-helmer-to-the-springfield-falcons/
If that schedule is accurate, the last month of the season is really favourable for the Oilers – 9 out of the 16 games are against teams that I think will miss the playoffs (Columbus, Anaheim, Calgary and Minnesota).
Any thoughts on trading for Marc-Andre Gragnani?
Offensive Defenceman with size
6’2 192 lbs
Former AHL ROY
He can put up points. Not really sure why Vancouver gave up on him so easily.
I imagine he’d be cheap to acquire.
Y’know, you’d think with all the bad things the Broncs have done to Baltimore over the years, starting with Elway Lindros-ing them, that the football gods would give them a few breaks in this game.
My only comfort is that if they win, Manning has to play in freezing cold again next week.
Projected #OKCBarons scratches: Lafranchise, Davidson, Schultz, Ringwald, Eberle, Pitlick, Hamilton, Tyrvainen, House, Hall, Henry
Message here? I think probably. Pitlick and Hamilton have to get more involved. tyrvainen is so deep in the doghouse I don’t know he’ll ever get out.
Projected #OKCBarons D-Pairs: Deck-Fedun, Marincin-Plante, Hotham-Teubert. Yann Danis in net
Looks like Marincin is over the flu, I think they need 2 more AHL d.
Projected #OKCBarons lines: Green-Arcobello-Cornet, Rajala-Lander-Paajarvi, Byers-Martindale-Hartikainen, Pelss-VandeVelde-Lizon
I like Cornet getting a chance on the top line, and also like the two veterans on the top line. Rajala was flying last night (as crazy as that sounds) and is rewarded. Harski on the 3line a surprise, but maybe it turns into the 2line if they play well.
Pelss getting a chance should be fun, VV on 4line the night before the call? and Lizon isn’t an AHL player.
zharkov with 2 assists already tonight, 1-4-5 in 4 period since returning from Wj’s.
That’s a loud message for the young 2nd rounders for sure.
Doesn’t Tyrvainen have a broken arm/wrist in addition to being in the doghouse?
So Ravens fans, does that make up for 25 yrs of watching The Drive?
Or do you want the win too?
If God pays attention to the NFL, Ravens win this on the first play.
What a football game!
Flacco wins this, I’ll stop mocking him.
Much better effort this game. I think Paajarvi and Fedun showed well in this period.
Payback, Elway, payback. It’s a bitch.
Manning now 8-10 in post-season. 0 for every cold game.
Ravens with all the personal motivation a a team could want: Elway, Modell, Lewis.
This game was a bettors dream.
Did Arcobello do that on purpose? Cagey
Arcobello (Plante, Green) 1-1 Much better game for the Barons.
I’ll never mock Flacco again. He’s good enough for sure.
Kellen Jones with a goal and Kyle Bigos with 2A tonight.
Cornet with a goal. Good for him, he’s back and getting a chance with skill and making it count. Hartikainen with a beautiful pass, Green with the other A.
Nice pressure on that PP and on the shift after by the new Nordic line. Great chance by Rajala at the end.
Rajala with the goal and a hell of sequence on that shift, Martindale with some nice work too.
Hehe, the Checkers can’t be happy with that. Good pressure, Byers pushes about 6 guys into the crease, Rajala puts a rebound over the scrum for a 3-1 lead.
Rajala from Byers. Looks like they had the skill in Stockton, Martindale gets the second A. 3-1 OKC.
Awful goal let in by Danis
Looks that way doesn’t it? Pitlick or Hamilton better show something soon or get left behind.
Sounded like Martindale had a few chances on that shift before the goal.
It seems all the streams for the AHL games have disappeared since the NHL announced it was coming back to work.
That’s the thing about hockey. The round matters on draft weekend, after that its every man for himself.
Rajala with another really good shift, he’s a slippery player.
Dillon Simpson and Jujhar Khaira with assists. Khaira is my pick as the best pick from the last draft outside the first round.
Agreed on Khaira.
Some updates on how most of the Oilers college hockey guys fared in Dec. here: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/83675/ncaa-college-prospects-notebook-for-december-2012/#more-83675
Khaira and Bigos were all-stars in a couple of tournaments. McCarron finally scoring a bit. Laleggia leading the nation in D scoring and improving on the defensive side. Jones also improving his 2-way game. Lots of positives.
Well that was a disappointing end to an overall good game by the Barons. OTL.
Not enough ammo. Oiler fans know this lesson well.
But Stu had all those bullets.
What happened?
Captain Happy,
They were all in the PB.
Lowetide,
Yeah, this brought me back to when Falloon was in town.
Patience, mosquito.
Well that and Danis has been terrible as of late.
There is a reason he is an AHL goaltender.
Captain Happy,
Captain Happy,
Be an ECHLr if he keeps playing like that
Be an ECHLr soon if he keeps playing like that.
