SPLITS
Tomorrow, the Edmonton Oilers will recall more Barons, likely Hartikainen, Paajarvi, VandeVelde and Teubert. Already in Edmonton are the “big four” of Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz. For many Barons, the second half of the 12-13 season is vital.
I wanted to post the numbers after the call ups so we can split the season and see if the prospects who get left behind end up with something resembling progress in the season’s second half. First half RE from pre-season in brackets where it is applicable.
Forwards
- Jordan Eberle 34, 25-26-51 +11 (37, 20-23-43)
- Taylor Hall 26, 14-20-34 E
- Mark Arcobello 34, 9-22-31 -5 (37, 9-11-20)
- Teemu Hartikainen 36, 11-15-26 -3 (35, 11-11-20)
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 19, 8-12-20 +7 (35, 14-28-42)
- Magnus Paajarvi 36, 4-16-20 -6 (38, 11-15-26)
- Chris VandeVelde 30, 1-8-9 E (25, 2-2-4)
- Josh Green 19, 4-4-8 -5 (35, 9-15-24)
- Anton Lander 32, 3-5-8 -4 (35, 4-8-12)
- Dane Byers 36, 2-3-5 -3 (30, 5-9-14)
- Curtis Hamilton 30, 2-2-4 -6 (33, 4-6-10)
- Tanner House 24, 2-1-3 -1 (10, 0-1-1)
- Tanner Pitlick 29, 1-2-3 -9 (72, 8-13-21)
- Ryan Martindale 8, 0-3-3 +2 (15, 1-2-3)
- Toni Rajala 6, 1-1-2 +1 (13, 1-1-2)
- Kristians Pelss 3, 0-2-2 +1 (13, 2-1-3)
- Antti Tyrvainen 9, 1-0-1 +1 (21, 2-1-3)
- Eric Hunter 2, 0-0-0 -1
- Cameron Abney 4, 0-0-0 +1 (20, 0-0-0)
- Erick Lizon 6, 0-0-0 -2
- Phil Cornet 8, 0-0-0 -2 (26, 6-5-11)
AHL veterans Arcobello, Josh Green and Dane Byers will need to post some offense, and the opportunity is there for Hartikainen or Paajarvi if they stay in OKC in the second half. Pitlick, Hamilton and Lander will be in competition with Rajala, Cornet, Martindale and maybe Pelss for some of those skill minutes. Todd Nelson has some work to do.
Defense
- Justin Schultz 34, 18-30-48 +8 (35, 6-15-21)
- Martin Marincin 31, 3-10-13 +8 (31, 2-8-10)
- Taylor Fedun 33, 2-7-9 -1 (28, 2-6-8)
- Colten Teubert 35, 2-3-5 -4 (35, 2-6-8)
- Nathan Deck 16, 0-4-4 +3
- Jordan Henry 19, 0-2-2 -3
- Teigan Zahn 5, 0-1-1 E
- Brandon Davidson 6, 0-1-1 E (30, 1-4-5)
- Alex Plante 26, 0-1-1 -7 (28, 1-6-7)
- Andrew Hotham 1, 0-0-0 E
- Kane Lafranchise 4, 0-0-0 -6
- Dan Ringwald 7, 0-0-0 E (30, 1-6-7)
If the Oilers don’t add some help on the blue to go with Marincin, Fedun, Teubert and Plante then they really don’t care about the Barons. I do like Deck, and am fascinated with Hotham’s even tonight–incredible. Send help!
Goal
- Yann Danis 27, 2.95 .908 (22, 2.41 .918)
- Olivier Roy 12, 2.92 .898 (8, 2.56 .915)
Danis started slow, got hot in the middle and has been poor in January. Roy has been inconsistent for the entire season and certainly seems to have his arrows going in a bad direction (not as bad as Tyler Bunz–don’t look!).

Since the Oilers need some depth on D, what are the odds they go after Jim Vandermeer as a Sutton replacement?
if the oil call up Yann Danis, as i hope they will, this crew is extra screwed.
I wonder if you could two birds with one stone by picking up Volchenkov out of NJ.
- Ulanov/Smith feels-no-pain defenceman – depth and reliability
- Someone who can actually talk to Yak without resorting to pantomime
That’s a bit unfair. In the recent press scrum Yakupov was doing just fine in English, including the part when he punked out Terry Jones. It’s not easy to be witty in your non-native language, and if he is at that point, he’ll be just fine:

The kid strikes me as pretty bright and self-assured, which I realize is terrifying for the old school scribes.
Looking forward to LT getting him on the radio one day, so we can actually hear some intelligent questions.
Man this OKC team is either going to produce some unsung heroes or drop right into the shitter (do not pass GO)!
Yep. If I’m Todd Nelson I burn the stat sheet from all the games before tonight and give everyone a fresh start. Barons have to get something good from some of these people.

Apparently that’s the sked.
Thanks to PJ Oil for tweeting. Vancouver Sunday is at least their second game in 24 hours, and SJ may be a good team to play early. No softies until the 2nd Sat against CAL.
My sister the Prez won’t be happy with me for saying so, but those two weren’t exactly comparables. It may well be that they both felt no pain, but Ulanov provided rather more depth than reliability.
