ARCOBELLO TO THE SHOW
Mark Arcobello has been recalled to the Oilers. He has not played an NHL game, and could debut tomorrow night. More later.

If they were going to go to the Barons for immediate help, Arcobello’s the best centre available. And, good for the young man should he play his first NHL game on Wednesday.
This may not be a long term solution but looking at his stats and his range of skills I’d say he can play in a pinch. And I’m happy for him, a guy who has paid his dues and come a very ling way as a prospect especially given his size.
It’s in circumstances like these that I’m comfortable with Kruegar as our coach, knowing that as coach of the Swiss team he could not always replace one of his better players with an equally talented player (not a lot of depth there) so he knows how to shuffle a lineup and play players to their strengths.
Lets hope he finds a nice little role for Arcobello and the player and team find success.
Now I feel a lot less silly for suggesting that this could happen for the past several months. Don’t make me look foolish Arcobello, hat trick your first game!!
The Oilers need a C and they take the best one available from OKC and not the “political” choice (which would be VV in this case)
Whitney gets scratched when he under performs.
What’s up with the Oilers doling out ice time on merit and not reputation or political reasons?
Breath of fresh air.
Good luck Mark!
I hope you do well.
RMGS,
good for the young man should he play his first NHL game on Wednesday.
At 24 years old he’ll be the oldest Oiler C on Wednesday.
Crazy.
Will most likely be the best face-off man on the team too, I hope Arcobello does well, I’m rooting for him.
Sink or swim for Arcabello I guess. Get your 30% off. zone starts and hope you get noticed. In a good way that is. One more center goes down and we can fire the training staff again. Yeaaa, ( in a drawn out sarcastic way).
I wonder if they try to balance out the lines out since he had some success with Hall and Eberle…
Yakupov–Nugent Hopkins–Hemsky
Hall–Arcobello–Eberle
Smyth–Gagner–Petrell
Hartikainen–Lander–Paajarvi
Bad time for injuries too. Seems like the next 8 games are very winnable or at least would be with a full lineup.
I am happy to see him get the opportunity and hope he gets at least 3 games and some meaningful icetime.
After that I plan on saying “Ralph Krueger wrecked Mark Arcobello” frequently.
I think RK has to address the overpassing on the first unit.It seems we have you take it ,no, you take it over and over. This is carrying the unselfish to the point of stupidity.
Clare Drake when they were playing an overmatched Japanese team made his player take two passes before they shot.
Maybe we need the opposite a maximum of two passes then you have to shoot.
I’m assuming that since Krueger won’t be able to run Belanger and Horcoff in shutdown roles he’ll juggle to do a bit of power vs power.
Hall-Ganger-Hemsky
Yakupov-RNH-Eberle
Smyth-Lander-Petrell
Paajarvi-Arcobello-Hartikainen
First line will have to go power vs power and hope they can flourish. Second line gets the push in the offensive zone, and the third line you have to hope can saw off for all the defensive zone draws they’ll be taking.
I would try:
Hall – Arcobello – Eberle
Smyth – RNH – Hemsky
Yakupov – Gagner – Petrell
Harty – Lander – PRV
Switch Yak and Smyth if need be or RNH with Gagner. Ironically I think the least risky place to put Arcobello is between Hall and Eberle on the top line.
Hard not to be happy for this guy. Works his buns off and finds himself in the show.
I wonder if his playing time with the forwards who were locked out factored into the decision. He certainly has more familiarity on the ice with The Kids than say VV.
The golden trio needs more north south but they are competing against the best.
Each player on the Nordic line plays better together than apart. Hopefully they hang in there.
Gagner and Hemsky are best candidates to shield Yak.
So Im guessing Arco slots into Horcoffs role and sees reduced responsibilities.
There’s just no place to hide anyone on this roster.
A better road lineup (remembering RKs preference of pairs) is to swap Smyth and Hall. Then cross your fingers that each line holds back the tide and double shift 4 when possible.
Regardless, this team is going to be hard up until Belanger and Hotcoff equivalents are back in the lineup.
OT, but Vollman tweeted his usage numbers for this year’s rookies: http://t.co/mcuPnby0
Then he followed up with this:
Yes, Justin Schultz is arguably rookie of the year so far. Very impressive. RT @mtoggel That Shultz bubble kind of sticks out hey?
I think we all feel that way by eye, so it’s nice to see one of our favourite metrics begin to compliment Schultz the Younger.
Oh, and congrats to Colin MacDonald or whoever we called up.
Downright Fierce,
He’s playing for the Islanders. He became a good AHL 1st liner/NHL Tweener.
Don’t worry, they will figure it out. I would rather they learn by trying the skilled approach and then finding the appropriate ways to score than telling them to dumb down their game and play like a plugger.
Arco’s basically played with everyone in OKC…Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, Petrell, and Hartikainen, and maybe even on RW with Lander.
One or two of Paajarvi, Gagner, and Nugent-Hopkins is going to get a big push penalty-killing. Smyth and Lander, Petrell and Paajarvi, probably. Expect maybe even Hemsky might have to take up the PK torch.
What is all this nonsense about the Oilers not having any centre depth? They’ve got Gagner, Gagne, and Ganger. Come on, one out of those three should be able to win a faceoff.
On a more serious note, I hadn’t even considered Arcobello, but I know that I will be cheering like heck for him. Small player, great skill and some intelligence to boot. Reasonable expectations would be some good decisions made, creating something positive in the offensive zone, and generally not looking like a fish out of water. Unrealistic expectations would be a hat trick, four assists and the cover of the Hockey News.
You know, I’m good for whatever..
Spector spent a nice portion of his show talking about how Gagner is too small to play on the Oiler’s 2nd line. IMHO, Gagner has been the most consistent Oiler forward so far this season. I guess he’s going to have those sideburns trimmed off before he gets any respect from some the MSM here in Edmonton. I’m sure there are quite a few teams around the league that would be happy to take Gagner off of the Oiler’s hands.
I’m looking forward to the first NHL appearance of the Beautiful Bow™ (Mark Arcobello).
pboy,
10 points in 9 games, you know that’s horrible, especially for a 2nd liner.
IMHO, Gagner has been the most consistent Oiler forward so far this season.
Well he’s certainly been consistent at faceoffs, zone entries, and soft time points. Not to mention point production every year of 6.
I’m sure there are quite a few teams around the league that would be happy to take Gagner off of the Oiler’s hands.
Gawd I wish Colorado was one of them and O’Reilly was coming this way on the deal but that’s just silliness.
Hey it’s not that Gagner is shitty ok? He is what he is and unfortunately not much of it fills an Oiler need right now. It’s not his fault that he’s been forced into a role he isn’t suited for but that’s his lot on this team. He’s centering two guys likely to end their careers as minus players and he’s totally incapable of extracting himself from their jetstreams or helping them improve.
If he ends the year at near point per game production but -25 what should we say about him?
A lot of people here trapped inside a box, or a square.
I don’t think size is an issue. And I think he has courage and tenacity, from what my eye sees. I’d like to see more glue to his checks in his own end though. I’d like to see the same effort in his own end as he puts in at the other. That’s my problem with Gagner. Kid has skills and smarts though.

Trending versus hockey peers shows a very interesting picture.
A square … boxes are more than 2 dimensional
I would say a line but that would be crossed
Peckham to Oklahoma for conditioning -Link
I think they should roll Doobie with Ganja and Hempsky. Problems solved! (What problems?)
Isn’t Cory Conacher too small to play on the same team as Martin St. Louis? -). -).
Worrying about whether one has the perfect 2nd line centre when there are still massive holes in other parts of the roster, one of them being the MSM’s buddy Ryan Whitney, suggests that there are massive holes in the mainstream media.
Gagner is an actual NHL player. The Oilers don’t have 20 of them yet. When they have 20, then one can worry about whether Gagner is the perfect 2nd line centre.
Well they’ll probably just pass it between them. Meanwhile Horcer and Belanger are Jones-ing right now.
I love stats.hockeyanalysis.com

cabbiesmacker,
IMO, that’s still vastly better than how our centers used to give up on the zone and shade back under Renney. All three guys are contributing in the offensive zone.
Can’t blame Gagner for the whole line’s defensive shortcomings. Despite his enthusiasm and selfless play at times, Yak has a lot to learn about defense inn the NHL. Krueger needs to play them with his best defensive pairing.
How would VV be a political choice?
BlacqueJacque,
He’s a big strong ”Defensive” guy.
Gene Principe is filing a copyright infringement case against you at this very moment!
Arcobello is probably never going to have an NHL career, but if he can get 10 games in at about $8000 per game (vs $800 in the AHL) it will make a difference for the guy.
Bruce McCurdy,
Benn trying to think how I could get this clip, or any clip from the movie, into an article. This seems like the right spot.

My favourite spot is still the two soldiers talking “do you care if it falls?” “If what falls?” “The Roman Empire”…
Great stuff.
Draft pick, big body, has previous NHL games.
Why do you hate Arcobello so much?
I can see that but I don’t imagine it’s political on the scale of the Schremp situation.
I haven’t looked through all the combos in detail. But you’re basing the Hall-Petrell chemistry on 21 minutes played together last year?? Really?
You must be new here.
“Steve Smith”,
Yeah, should know better.
