AVALANCHE AT OILERS G14 (12-13) 16.2.12
Nail Yakupov is apparently moving from the 2line to the 3line, as coach Krueger plans to take him away from Gagner-Hemsky (which is a very good spot) to the Belanger-Smyth line (those are two veterans, nice soft landing spot for the kid AND he gets to play RW).
I’m excited to see Yakupov have another scoring spree. He had 4 goals in 7 January games, but has scored only once in 6 contests this month. It doesn’t really matter, he’s such a ridiculous talent the goals will come–Nail Yakupov is a wonderful young hockey player.
Let’s compare him to the other #1′s through each of their first 13 NHL games:
- Yakupov 13, 5-3-8 -7 12pims 22shots 14:45TOI
- Hall 13, 3-3-6 -5 4pims 26shots 16:15TOI
- Nuge 13, 6-6-12 +4 6pims 26shots 16:55TOI
I don’t know which of these men will have the better career, but believe each will enjoy significant success. As an Oiler fan since 1972, I’m so thrilled to be along for the ride.
–
The early HNIC game will salute the 50th anniversary of the 1963 Stanley win, so expect a late start to the game and possibly missing the early minutes of the Oiler game. The Leafs always do this crap, but this time around it’s going to be long because Dave Keon will be in attendance. Keon was (along with Frank Mahovlich) the best skater for Toronto in the 1960s and 1970s, and does not attend these events because Harold Ballard.
So this is a rare item, expect a long ovation and men older than me in tears. I don’t blame them, childhood heroes are special no matter your age, and those with the courage of their convictions are even more worthy.
–
Nail Yakupov, Chris VandeVelde, Justin Schultz, Jeff Petry, Mark Fistric and Teemu Hartikainen got their heads shaved at WEM yesterday in the annual Hair Massacre in support of children with life threatening illnesses. What a wonderful cause, and God bless these young men for doing it. (photo courtesy the Edmonton Journal).

We talked about Toni Rajala last night, he had a good evening for the Barons (who got a Bettman point but lost in the shootout). Rajala’s arrows are heading up, but 2007 1st round pick Alex Plante is down, down in a coal mine underneath the ground. The three first round picks from 2007 (Oilers edition)–a draft class that should have set them up for years–looks like this in terms of NHL action:
- Sam Gagner #6 overall: 379, 81-152-233
- Alex Plante #15 overall: 10, 0-2-2
- Riley Nash #21 overall: 5, 0-1-1
Gagner is an NHL regular and tied for 27th in points this season; Nash is enjoying his best AHL season (his entry level contract expires this year); Plante has been a healthy scratch for three games in a row. Those concussions, along with some foot speed issues look like they had a major impact on his lack of development. I doubt he’s in the organization as part of the 50 man roster next year.
The five names taken right after Plante (Colton Gillies, Alexei Cherepanov, Ian Cole, Logan MacMillan, Angelo Esposito) are as a group underperforming their draft number (and of course Cherepanov passed away before he had the opportunity to show us his skill), suggesting a soft area in the first round (although Max Pacioretty, Michael Backlund and David Perron were still available).
2007 was an opportunity missed.

Brandon Davidson had a helluva debut in Stockton.
–
Michael Parkatti has been posting scoring chance numbers over at his blog and they are (as always) revealing interesting things. For instance, the club’s successful lines are filled with kids. Here are the numbers for the Dallas game (I believe these are even strength):
- Jordan Eberle +11
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins +8
- Taylor Hall +8
- Teemu Hartikainen +4
- Eric Belanger +1
- Magnus Paajarvi -1
- Sam Gagner -5
- Ales Hemsky -5
- Nail Yakupov -6
- Lennart Petrell -8
- Chris VandeVelde -8
- Ben Eager -11
Faced with those numbers at even strength, I’d think the coach would:
- leave the top line the hell alone
- give the Nordic line (w/Belanger sitting in for Lander) more minutes
- suffer through the Yak growing pains with Gagner-Hemsky knowing that good times are on the way
- rotate as many new people onto the 4line as humanly possible
Krueger, who has been impressive in media scrums and in both in-game decision making and lineup decision-making, decided to tweak this way:
- leave the top line the hell alone
- give Gagner-Hemsky another LW (Hartikainen) in the hopes the chance plus minus edges toward level par
- move Yakupov to his natural position (RW) and give him two veterans (Belanger-Smyth) to make things easier. That’s a rocking chair for the kid, and might have added value if Smyth can post some offense.

LAUGHER
The Oilers are averaging only 2.15 goals per game, ranking 28th in the 30-team NHL. The Avs are 27th at 2.17. Sooner or later the Oilers are going to break out, and maybe it will be tonight against an injury riddled Quebec Nordique lineup. Edmonton (apparently) got some good news late yesterday, as it looks like Justin Schultz and Jeff Petry will both play despite some bumps and bruises.
A few places on the Al Gore have suggested this is a “must win” for the Oilers, but I think with their streaky past and the relative youth on the roster they could just as well go on a winning streak away from home as they could at Rexall. I do think there are a lot of good arrows, but that’s been the case for some time. As Taylor Hall said after the Dallas game, if they play as well as last game every night, they’ll do just fine.
We’re a long way from the first “must win” game of this season.

Hall, damn, ouch!
Hell of a shift
Hall has been all Corsi and no Red Light this period.
Man. Hockey is hard.
Taylor Hall just can’t finish…That’s why some people get so irritated with him.
shhhh… you’re going to stimulate darling surly ferret in all the wrong ways.
I hope that’s not the only slide we see from Yak tonight.
I see the scoring drought isn’t going away.
19 shots and 5 minutes to go in the first period… sigh.
Man, I didn’t realize the Oilers killed Mark Lee and Kelly Hrudeys dogs.
“O’reilly miffed at not being named captain”. if true and he wants big $$$ that does not sound like a player to be trading for.
Forward lines look well conceived. D pairings not so much
Farqwad
Oh, Ouch!
DD is looking real shaky…
time to start looking lottery.
Will it ever end???
Habby time
omg
Seriously? Ouch!
THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING!
PULL HIM NOW!!!!!!!!
So how ’bout them Cubs?
7-3 oilers maybe?
Man alive I hate this hockey team.
I have never seen so much pinching by the Oiler D… even Smid has been below the opposing goal line twice.
LMAO
Stupid fucking Aliens.
Finally!!!
Hemsky!!!!! Ouch!!!!!!
The Malbec I went for as per LT not going to get me through ~ upgrading ala Woodguy to a Speyside single malt. Working already think eye(sic) just saw Hemskey score.
*closes Western conference standings window*
*opens Bob Mackenzie draft rankings window*
Wait! Hemsky!!
Ales Hemsky, sniper.
Taylor Hall, playmaker.
Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, checking centre.
Warm in February.
Cold day in hell.
DD is not going to be a good afer hours guest at this rate.
Well Hemmer makes it a little better!
tthank you thank you thank you thank you
Just when I was going to say that the Oilers can’t get any puck luck…
0-22 on EV shots.
1-1 on PP shots.
notes
- hemsky is our undisputed goal leader… odd
- cherry is an idiot
- RK could legit run a 54-55-56 line… that just hit me
- almost made a whole 20mins without a penalty.
- d zone coverage I guess wasn’t worked on during the days off. it shows.
There has to be a curse at work here. 23 shots in the first period and down 3-1. Unbelievable.
Did I see a disgusted look from McLean as they cut to commercial? Why for?
Dennis King @DKingBH
Scoring Chances: 11-7; 1-0 ST
Man. Ralph needs some better scripts
Nice last moment shot of McLean – he is as tired of cherry as the rest of us! Ouch!
like this?:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOU4zcA3vvI
The PA guy at Rexall keeps saying Steve Duchene scored. I love it.
Good points
All the Dmen trying to play like J Schultz. We have J Schultz play some bloody D!
Dubie will break every oiler heart.
He will have nights when he stops everything then let’s one in off his back or fumbles the puck .
He is a big man but to me just a little too big and clumsy.
Friedman on Stock: “unsalvageable”… in more ways than one.
I think we’ve got lacrosse refs tonight. Or Joanette.
The number of odd man rushes the team gives up is ludicrous.
RK’s up ice pressure scheme has the D pinching a ton and the F just aren’t good at covering.
14 in particular lolly gagged on the back check and his man scored the 3rd goal. 93 when for up ice pressure with only 1 D back and another trapped. Not good decisions.
DD having a tough night.
89 had a bad period too.
Running around is his own zone a lot and not helping the exits much at all. He might be the key problem zone exit wise on that line. Getting walked by Duchene was pretty gross too.
93 is much better a quarterbacking the break out.
The game is far from over though. 4-93-14 are going to break the seal soon.
I don’t believe tonight’s game is vital, but that period tells us the Oilers aren’t good enough. Whatever else, this team is headed in the wrong direction. Two periods to prove I’m wrong.
Don Cherry is crazy saying the Oilers should get bigger. We are building an All Star team here. We don’t need grit or size. We like soft players here.
Go home Cherry
We can’t seriously be putting that period on Doobie.
Driftwood’s Fat Tug Ale is one that the beer drinkers ought to try. It’s divine, but strong (consider yourself warned).
Romulus Apotheosis,
Yes, just like that.
….Anything. Hah. Long live Grapes.
this team is just excruciating to watch.
their defense is just so bad. i don’t even understand how ..
Khabibulin in?
WHY!?
Not all his fault but I don’t think he played very well, he should have 1 or 2 of those. It happens though.
And like this
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=ufdOgPKnflc&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DufdOgPKnflc
This team starts to games and periods is consistently horrible.
You’re not wrong LT, bad teams find ways to lose games even when they’re the better team on a given night. All the good things that some players achieve get outdone by the marginal players on the team.
i’m liking both Eager and PRV tonight.
What a line
Heh, now they’re rapping on the commentary.
“Nugent-Hopkins with the blast
against the glass
on the pass
from Eberle”
So Matt Duchene is single-handedly better than the Oilers.
Ouch
Smyth taking a shot like that short handed, took a PKer out of the play on the opposite side….uggh.
Harry Potter on the other side is looking pretty good right now
Glad I bought that bottle of Tomintoul.
Everyone calm the heck down, Krueger is a world class communicator
That trumps everything
Well, that’s enough for me tonight. You have to wonder how long Krueger’s job is safe if the lack of results continue…
On the bright side, until that last goal Justin Schultz had the same number of PP goals as the entire Avalanche team combined.
My biggest concern is that 3 litres of ale isn’t going to be enough.
Well. I’m just going to watch. The only things I disagree with are pulling DD and the D pairings. Ralph! Let them run!
Man this is frustrating. I can’t imagine the player’s level of frustration.
Clay,
It’s not Kreuger that should be worried:
Tambo is about a week away from unemployment at this rate…
Stupid ref blowing that dead.
One can only hope.
Man, Duchene can fly. Kind of like what Hall was advertised to be.
If the Avs minus their top 2 players can thump us, I don’t think thats a good sign. But at least we are good sports about it, none of that pushing or scrapping that other teams do when they are getting worked in front of their home crowd. My oil are the softest bunch of pussies ever to tank a NHL season. But I still love them. Go oil.
Looks more like a penalty on the Avs
There have been stretches during this game where they have looked absolutely briliant and then Colorado scores. Just like there.
Good call there on the high stick, surprised he saw it.
Unbearable……this 9 game road trip is going to put the season to rest.
I would be stunned if Tambellini has a job by the end of the weekend.
Stauffer going on about how the Oilers have to be careful, or MPS is going to be waiver-eligible. Well then, let’s by all means bury him.
FFS. Is there anywhere that tracks odd man rushes? Oilers differential has to be worst in the league
Exciting Last Place Hockey?
Bruce is probably ripping the refs a new asshole somewhere.
I am stunned that Tambellini has a job.
Look at how much ice each team has. This is a n AHL game.
I agree with you and hope you’re right. However, this team should at least be scoring goals, and they’re 27th in the league in goals for. They’re playing the 30th place team in scoring right now (who is going to zoom right past them).
Man I got angry at the game and drank repeatedly in anger and am on the floor.
The melodrama is thick here at LT’s tonight.
Finally
RNH!!!!!!!
The Oilers are the awesomest awesomes!
Ok here we go! Need some emotion from that one.
At least the Oil have 1 good line. Wow.
And good for Nuge to get his first!
About time, not only for him but the line.
Beautiful.
well maybe that gets the nuge going
RNH is my friend and I am drinky.
Whitney makes a simple pass and the commentators are polishing his knob.
Taylor Hall is taking over this game! He is going to will the win. Ouch!
Nuge for the Natural hat trick, slides to center ice, shoots ducks in the press gallery. Why because fuck Don Cherry this is Nuge city!
Ales Hemsky is a bad man.
Hall and Hopkins, with sails unfurled.
Jesus Hemsky!
OH SHIT!
Smyth picks off a pass and then makes a great pass to Hemsky who slides in from the slot and pulls Varlamov’s pants down.
Ales Hemsky, ladies and gentlemen
HOLY FUCK!!!!!
Hemsky!!!!!!
Well, we have a game.
Hemsky deked the shit out of Varlamov. Beauty!!!!!!!!
Ok maybe not the Natural hat trick but Harry Potter is getting less interesting.
WOW! Hemsky BEAUTIFUL goal!
hemsky… unbelievably evil.
Did the sky stop falling yet?
*uncrumples Oiler jersey in corner*
That’s one of the nicest goals I’ve seen this year. Tonnes of fun to see Hemsky score one like that!
Like this guy? I hate days like that.
How long before Krueger starts experimenting with Hemsky or Yak as top line RW?
I’ve been hard on 94 lately, but that was a great sequence by him there. What a freeking roller coaster ride with this team
Harry Potter is pretty good.
Nuge = Harry Potter
Can’t speak to the Kiridori version but wine aerators are great for the impatient drunk. Now if only they can come up with a device the speeds my steaks resting time.
cmon ebs.
.Yes, Spoiler and now The game is fuzzy
I love Paajarvi’s anticipation and work ethic. Great, smart little play to stop that puck behind the net. Didn’t lead to anything, but great play.
And he starts muscling Avs around in front of the net like a boss.
everything is so frustrating
Well this is must win now.
Kris11,
There, there. Let it all out.
BlacqueJacque,
Noticed that as well. Used his body well. No way he is that aggressive last year. Small steps
If Hopkins chips that to 83 it’s hat trick time and we’re tied. The wall is cracking boys!
Looks like my son’s first tv watching game might turn out after all.
i love u steve smith
Love PRV waiting to watch the replay on the bigscreen before leaving the ice.
So if the Oil come back and win this thing, does that mean there is a second team with a #goaliecontrovery in the Northwest Division?
~_^
looking for hemsky’s second career hatty in the 3rd!
Can’t get excited of the goals by Edmonton, there is so much ice out there for the players. This is the way Edmonton hopes all teams would play against them.
TemujinBC,
Two weeks ago loads of people wanted to keep Danis and not even give NK a game. Given Danis’ struggles it would have been a terrible decision.
What the fuck is PJ Stock doing with that collar? I’d love for Healey to turn that collar down and tell PJ to smarten up.
P.J stock is a fool!
Ok, so judging by the comments, the Oilers got a couple? As soon as I stopped watching. Fak. Now I don’t know if I should turn it back on.
38 shots through 2, and by my eye not many have been from the perimeter. This game is pond hockey.
PJ Stock = Draco Malfoy with the popped collar to get in character
Hope McCurdy adds special HNIC grade tonight just for Stock. Time for Cassie Campbell the most decorated player the CBC employees to make the panel. Give Stock the fluff interviews.
For all those who ripped me for defending Hemsky so vehemently at trade dead line last year, you may apologize now.
Hall and Hemsky are going to force the Oilers to win this game.
I’m really souring on 89. Watching him closely and not seeing much I like today.
Nik looks like Nik.
Gonna need more whiskey for the 3rd.
Yes
Stay away clay.
Haha, the wall. Holy moly, The Avs are not good. Oilers should beat them if they’re getting any better.
Hemsky’s the man. The insane patience/timing he has in him is ridiculous. 20% shooting percentage, but how many of them were actual shots and not him just out waiting everyone and placing the puck in the net?
I’d bet on Tambellini getting canned first.
Too many horses on the D that can’t pull the load.
You’re not the only one.
Someone posted WOWY numbers somewhere that really stung my confidence in Gagner, too.
A lot of coasting tonight. He’s prone to that every now and then. He says he’s working on his consistency every season and I think it’s getting better. We’re just seeing an off night from him.
He’s a huge problem on zone exits for his line.
83 is most dangerous on the rush and he never has the puck on his stick going north due to cluserfuckery in dzone by the dmen and 89.
Oilers with 35 shots on net after 2 periods. This game must be giving raging love to the usual suspects around here.
Weekes said something smart!
scoring chances and shots wildly favor the oil… and most of the shots are on the net tonight! good news.
Also… Healy said in a re-draft of 2009 O’Rielly goes 2nd… he said it was the consensus of hockey folks’ opinion…
my question: not OEL?
I can’t help but feel this is a 3-3 game if DD was still in net.
I know the goalie change is what most people will put the revival down too but the one Khabby let in was a shocker.
Yea, been seeing a lot of that this year as well. He seemed to work well with Cogliano exiting the zone but with no one else since. He just takes too long to get going. It’s the worst when he tries to lug it up in front of the netminder and gets stripped.
“The most dangerous team at both ends of the ice…” I think that’s the most well-said thing to ever come out of Oake’s mouth.
I’ve liked Hemsky a lot tonight, but it’s kind of weird that, on the scoresheet at least, the first line isn’t leading the comeback, because it’s been outstanding.
Looks like RK has taken the Blender to the forward lines as well
Yak is back on the second line?
About bloody time, zebras
SO MANY OPEN NETS ;ilhg;ilh,423thsdf;lkui54yetrlsijgdwre
Belanger PP?
I totally thought that as well and then I remembered, don cherry said they are too small.
56 out….
SHoulder injury
on and on it goes
Jones and Matheson tweeted Teemu out with a shoulder injury – thus the blender for the lines.
Nice PP. we sure could have used a goal.
Great skating by Yak surprises… Hemsky? Someone who wasn’t ready for that pass!
Nice hustle by Ben Eager!
It’s not that RNH is too small, as I understand it, but if the Oilers’ *other* centres were bigger, that would allow the top line to score more often. I think that’s the theory, anyway.
Tie the fucking game!
Eager deserved a penalty shot. It would have been worth it for the novelty.
yes
WICKED pass by Yak to Gagner who finds Ebs around the net.
Whatagame!
EBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DOUBLE SCHNIDE!!!!
Just need Hall to score now.
kill everyone yes!
Excellent play by Gagner. Well done.
89 redeeming his night on that PP.
Very nice work there.
Like that PP unit down low. Left side Ebs is going to carve out your eye. Right side Yak is going to crush your skull and in front of the net Smyth is going to crush your nuts. Oh Oh the drink is getting to me.
Gagner looks hurt.
Ugh.
Nice work by Gagner there… he walked off the half-wall and blasted a nice low slapper earlier in the PP, then did the same thing on the goal, but faking the shot and sliding a nice pass to Ebs for the open net goal.
Hall at 8 shots with time to go. If he starts to shoot at a reasonable chance, he posts elite numbers,
Win the fucking game!
50 shots…
lets try for 60!!!
I don’t recall seeing Harski this period.
I think Alberta’s CPLED coordinator just won at Score and Win. Any of the other students-at-law or recently called lawyers here catch that?
Shoulder hurt.
spoiler,
He’s hurt. shoulder. not returing
What is rarer in Oilers history 60 shots or a Hemsky hat trick? SportsSelect have to start offering odds on the next Oiler to need shoulder surgery. They can send some of the proceeds to the Hospital
Thanks, lads.
VanOil,
according to Tencer, team record is 55.
Principe says 55 vs Minny Mar. 21/86
The sports action props had the over/under on Oiler shots at 29.5 and Oiler goals at 2.5
I’m beginning to really like this team of yours.
I don’t think I’ve ever (and will ever again) seriously thought a goalie who allowed 4 goals should get a star.
regwald,
regwald,
They’re gonna break that. 52 already
If there is a player who thinks faster than Eberle, I’d love to know who it is.
I don’t know who it is who pointed this out, but Yakupov is really a passer who shows glimmers of brilliance. Never anything as sublime as Nuge’s make-space-and-pass subtleties and stickhandling tricks, just instant reaction passes and wicked velocity. His accuracy could use some work, and his teammates need to realize the puck isn’t going to be on his stick very long and is going to be coming at them like a Nolan Ryan fastball.
So glad we didn’t draft Murray.
Whitney is garbage.
Yak.
Whitney with the horrible pass causes a total clusterfuck.
And whitney with the shit giveaway…leads to a pp against…
6 should be back in the box next game. That was a lazy give away.
Khabi sayin ‘Hey Varlamov is not the only Russian goalie who can make great saves in this game!’
Nah, I don’t think his brain is as quick as Ebs’. HIs hands might be quiker though.
regwald,
Thanks.

for after the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcM14Al83Ls if your going to paraphrase Taylor Swift
