KINGS AT OILERS G15 (12-13). 19.2.13
It’s becoming fun to be an Oilers fan again. For instance, I have a crazy busy day but it doesn’t matter. Why? Oilers play tonight! Anything could happen! Saturday night’s game was an instant classic and I expect we’ll see a few more this winter.
I used to work the 5 to 8pm shift at CKGY in Red Deer, this is back in the period where the station was downtown. I lived two minutes away but the ITV games mid-week started at 7:30pm. I’d race home to catch the end of period one, and (this was eary 1980s) it was rare to see a 0-0 game after one. The Oilers were high event both ways and since I didn’t worry about Corsi or zone entries or PDO it was all good, clean fun.
I think we can (I can) get so caught up in the minutiae of the game it is sometimes easy to miss the pure joy of watching free flowing hockey. This blog helps, the in-game conversation is rarely heavy (do people still use that word? It was a staple in the 1970′s. You’d say something mildly intelligent and some knob would drawl “heavvvvveeeeee” and everyone would laugh and miss your point. What a stupid decade) and usually insightful. Hope we get some fun goals and a win tonight and hope you join me in the GDT.

The storyline tonight will be (partly) built around Teemu Hartikainen’s ability to play. Based on what we heard yesterday, it sounds like he’ll be good to go and will line up with Gagner and Hemsky. If he can’t go, Magnus Paajarvi would apparently move up the depth chart, meaning he went from hot dog eating healthy scratch at 7pm Saturday to hero later that night and then among the top 6F’s by Tuesday. A Star Is Born?
–
Theo Peckham’s conditioning stint is over, he’s on his way back to Edmonton.
–
Terry Jones has an article up reminding us of Canada’s official hockey ambassador Don Cherry and his measured, thoughtful comments about Nail Yakupov’s celebration after scoring a very late goal to send things to overtime last time LAK were in town.
- Cherry: “You don’t do stuff like that. L.A. is going to remember this. They are going to remember this to the dying day. Don’t act like that, kids. You’ll get in trouble every time.”
DYING DAY! If only Nail had been born in Kingston. Silly Nail.
–
In actual news, the Oilers got a big win Saturday and would do themselves an enormous favor with a regulation win tonight.
- Krueger: “As much as we’ve never gone two games without some sort of points, we need, badly, somewhere here, to put games together. We have to be in a stronger position for the (nine game) road trip. That’s the pressure we’re putting on ourselves right now — to string some together. It’s a necessity that has to happen.”
Oilers host LAK tonight, Minnesota Thursday and then Phoenix on Saturday. The following week they are on the road to Chicago, Dallas, St. Louis and Minnesota. That’s 7 games, and based on the season results so far Edmonton might expect to gather 7 or 8 points. They’ve been pretty solid on the road, and have been surprisingly strong against Chicago recently (certainly last year). The other teams are ‘in the range’ with the Oilers in the standings (well, St. Louis is ahead by 4 points) so a .500 record (say 3-3-1) seems plausible over the next two weeks. I understand Ralph Krueger creating a scenario where there’s pressure on during the homestand but I don’t really see how it’s a fact.
They’re doing fine. Avoid a long losing streak and you’re good to go. Hang around until the deadline and then address needs.

We’re getting into the season now (pretty much one third of the way, folks!) and the 5×5/60 numbers are beginning to add up, last year’s numbers in brackets.
- Taylor Hall 2.32 (2.07) up arrow
- Sam Gagner 2.00 (1.96) up arrow
- Nail Yakupov 1.54
- Jordan Eberle 1.43 (3.08) down arrow
- Ales Hemsky 1.43 (1.57) down arrow
- Ryan Smyth 1.42 (1.93) down arrow
- Ryan Nugent Hopkins 1.24 (1.98) down arrow
- Magnus Paajarvi 0.61 (0.75) down arrow
- Eric Belanger 0.58 (0.64) down arrow
- Lennart Petrell 0.57 (0.83) down arrow
That’s what we might expect, right? Lots of numbers close to last year, Eberle’s down but we were suspicious based on his own past. Fair? I think so. The kid has a nice number based on minutes and how he’s looked at evens (all over the place)–once he settles down this team is going to win some games they shouldn’t win.
–
I was prepared to trumpet the Oilers PDO number as a sign of great things to come, but the Kings haven’t squeezed out a drop since they left Shawshank. It the battle of thirst, LA wins and one hopes they don’t find deliverance before tonight at midnight (“Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh”).

Ralph Krueger is saying nice things about Ben Eager. Joanne Ireland has the story in the EJ.
- Krueger: “In the Western Conference, the kind of toughness we need is the kind (Eager) is bringing us. We need players who will go through you every single time you have the puck. That’s what we’re really demanding of him and I’m pleased with the way he’s come off the injury to give us that. That’s a lot of weight coming at you at a very high speed.”
Eager has lots of hockey issues (pass/take a pass, giveaways–he gave away the puck three times in short order the other night but nhl.com says he doesn’t have any) but the coach says nice things. You know what else he does? Plays him. 7.5 minutes a night in the games he’s played in (concussion problems have kept him from playing more). I think coach Krueger has made progress with the ‘great Oilers roster myth’–the 2 minutes a night player is no longer on the roster–and I do think a team needs toughness and attitude in the lineup. Just make sure they can play the game.
I guess I just thought Eager was a better player. The article linked from Ireland also talks about a free agent signing that took a year to pay off (Belanger). Good read.

Only Yak remembers to shoot.
And Hall hung onto the puck too long. Gah. This Oiler team is so frustrating. So close and yet so far from bridging the gap.
That’s the same zebra that put on a circus last time the Kings were in town!
AND the Nuge is a marvel defensively.
The Nuge is such a marvel of coordination.
Filthy Hobbits!
Gagner solves Quick on a drop pass from Hall.
Seconds after a weird bounce almost goes into the Oilers net…
Look what happens when you shoot the puck!
I think I’m going to be very unpopular here for this, but seems to me that Hall is often guilty of trying to do too much on his own and ends up killing a play. Just me?
Gagner (Hall, J Schultz)
SHOOOOOOOT!
Now the refs will do everything to give LA supposed makeup calls to give them a goal. It is that kind of reffing.
Nice drop #4
Gagner!!!!
The stadium announcer said #19 Jeff Schultz.
TCHO, disagree on Hall.
Are you related toTCHO chocolates in any way?
Such a weird fucking game.
jeff schultz?
wtf…Jeff Schultz?? Twice?
I am more impressed with Gagner wining the face off against Stoll than scoring. Also despite the goal, I think Yak needs to be on the ice for a 5v3′s we need some one to shoot.
Jeff Schultz. or Nick or Justin?
Kris11,
Nope. Just tcho.
RK, please stop putting 6 on the ice for four-on-fours. He is lost trying to pivot around in his own zone.
they’re still in this thing.
Good chocolate. Order some and preted you made it to all your friends. Presuming you call yourself TCHO to your friends.
LA broadcast team really high on Hemsky.
He’s the best Oiler out there. Followed by Eager, Schultz, and Petry.
What will Gagner be asking for in his next contract? It won’t be 3.5 per year.
Bloody Chicago giving Vancouver a point.
Meh, important thing is that Vancouver heard Chelsea Dagger to finish a game yet again.
Meh.
If you are playing a struggling goalie who looks to have rebound control issues, you many want to shoot the puck more often.
Exits really disjointed and jail breaks making the D make first passes that are too long instead of 12-15ft.
Not all of it is on the F’s though (most is), sometimes the D is ignoring the safe short pass and doing weird things. Petry in particular a few times.
Just meh.
David Staples@dstaples
#Oilers outchancing #LAKings 17-8, but only Sam “Lucky” Gagner has scored so far.
Dennis King@DKingBH
2nd period chances: 8-10; 1-0 ST. After 40 min: 19-15; 5-1
Who do we believe?
My god.. intermission player interview that had a decently intelligent question..
Neither team very impressive that period. It is a wierd game- stripes have them on edge?
Not thar impressed with the Kings – Carter seems disinterested. Kopitar has taken a few shots from the outside when normally he’d bury his shoulder and drive to the net. Stoll invisible. I can see why they’re having trouble scoring.
Gret99zky,
Dennis, reflexively.
Doesn’t matter he won’t be playing in Edmonton.
I’d take Kings SC’s, they seem to jive more with what i’m seeing.
Although 5 on the PP seems generous.
What’s up with Calgary always getting the second game of a visiting teams back to back?
It’s not like the Kings or Oilers are expending too much energy here, but yeah, I noticed that too.
Oilers top line can’t get the puck out on account of being cute. Tiresome, and I love these guys.
LA is pretty much trapping on the Oiler’s blue line.
Have Yak and Harti flipped lines?
Hartikainan has looked a step slower than 89 and 83 tonight. Not sure about the line. Will anyone fit with them?
The Nuge is a first class wizard with the puck.
Cmon Hall, chip n chase when its a 1 on 4 and your team is on a line change.
just not getting the bounces tonight. nuts.
VanOil,
We could could keep Gagner if Toews was are #1 center.
Now his is D Sutter hockey. Should work well versus the Oilers. the odd man rushes against will start soon
That’s a beautiful fourth line at work there.
Hartikainen is an ox. With hands.
wicked game!
Harski and Paajarvi were beasts on that cycle. Something almost came of it a number of times.
I’m about khabi’s age and I can’t for the life of me imagine making a stretch save like that…. I guess this accounts for our vast difference in yearly income.
EDIT: I could probably drink him under the table though. This may or may not be related to my inability to ‘do the splits’.
Rondo,
i think that the Nuge might be closer to Toews than most people think. I believe he might be in the Datsyk-late career Yzerman range, as far as being an offensively gifted two-way player.
Rondo,
Rondo, my friend, you’re an accidental satirist in search of a target.
Go get Brown.
JohnnyRocket,
Hitchcock called it when he compared Nuge to Datsyuk.
Dustin Brown is a piece of shit. .
JohnnyRocket,
Rondo means in terms of size. Seriously.
ooof, is Nuge ok?
Rondo: We do.
If the Oilers can’t find a place for Hartikainen well I just don’t know.
5 with the failed clearing attempt, leading to 25 seconds of scrabbling in our own zone.
I sense an LA goal comming soon.
God dammit Khabi how do you cough up so many rebounds with modern equipment? It does 90% of the work for you.
Shaiko and Lando are damn good.
Who?
I’d add 91 to that list.
Eager with a great game. Can good Eager keep showing up? And Dubnyk needs the next start.
Lando Calrissiam?
This ref is a joker. I am takin names.
Err… Calrissian
I could imagine some Oiler fans would not trade RNH for Toews.
And Yak is predictably back on the second line.
Both teams will be playing for the Bettman point from here on in.
Yeah, we were all about to jump all over you for that one.
you can get pads set up in different ways, including super stiff and reboundy.
i think he thinks he can better direct his rebounds with a stiffer pad, but he so obviously can’t.
I mean his chest pad. And his glove, for that matter. How do you give three or four rebounds off your glove? Sheesh.
That’s what she said.
what percentage of games have gone to OT this year? Got to be 30-40%
Nuge hurt.
Whitney is a timebomb, every time he is on the ice.
Whitney jesus.
Nuge back.
I don’t think I’ve ever been leerier of a goalie with a .970 SV%.
“Steve Smith”,
Remember when Brian Boucher set a record for consecutive minutes of SO?
Man goalies.
Fuck you Khabi.
Good night.
Lol, there it is.
off the linesman skate. loss.
goddammit
It’s okay – we’ll tie it up, and then the goal will be called back, and then Yakupov will score for real.
His celebration will be really subdued, though.
Damn it!
Fuck
Shit.
Haahahahaha.
all that for nothing.
“Steve Smith”,
Yo would be right
Fuck sakes – classic
Eberle needs to get a stick on Carter there
“I think Khabby will get first star tonight……(jinx)…..errrrr.”
Thanks Gord.
Khabibulin has to have that.
That hit by Hall on Doughty was almost worth the goal. Almost.
Hall has been looking to hit Doughty like that for 3 years now.
striatic,
What the hell are you talking about? It was an empty net goal!
that sucked.
I just cannot believe how this team gives up so many last minute goals. Especially at home. Its been such a disease for so many years.
Squandered.
Bit of a wasted effort. Trevor Lewis and Colin Fraser sunk us?
“Steve Smith”,
i meant the one before that.
i’m on about a 60 second delay.
You can’t blame Khabi for either of those goals, man.
striatic,
Can’t fault Khabby on that. Great, subtle deflection.
Awful game.
Lots of watching the play instead of making a play.
14 was not good at anything.
Never won a battle for a loose puck, just didn’t do much of anything.
Game was right there and only a handful of Oilers really worked to get it.
Meh.
Shitty loss. Five times a ref or linesman got in the way of an Oiler or Oiler play, and of course it ends up playing a part in us losing. Ugh.
Worst player tonight, imo, was Eberle. Pulled a vanishing act for most of the game and really struggled defensively.
Man. That’s going to leave a mark. Oilers did it to themselves, though.
It’s tired. They must lead the league in this last few years, and it’s probably not close.
I blame Khabi for the 2008 recession.
Does Ralph send a message to Ebs and sit him next game?
Hossa is having a career year. Hansen deserves to have the book thrown at him. I hope Hossa is alright. It would be a shame if his season is cut short.
Mark Spector Sports@SportsnetSpec
For the record, saw nothing intentional in Hansen-Hossa incident. Can’t see any supplementary discipline there.
Wrong.
Sitting Ebs might be a smart move. He’d have a fire under him when he returned. It’d be nice for the vets to know that the kids aren’t so golden that the can’t be healthy scratches.
And here we all were, sitting around, thinking to ourselves, “I wonder what Mark Spector thinks?” Buddy’s a mind reader.
Completely wrong. How the hell is a forearm to the back of the head not intentional?
Khabby played good. You have to be able to score some goals at home.
Hey guys, you know what I think would really help this team? Wait for it… Call me batshit crazy but I think this team could use another defenseman!
Hurry the fuck up Oscar.
When Petry(not his fault) did the stutter step behind the net before the linesman cost us the goal…
0 points FFS
Yann Danis would have prevented it.
“It’s tough giving up that late goal, but that’s not where we lost it. We were flat tonight. The result was what we deserved.” – Gagner
Yes. We need another top four defenseman, so that Whitney can be traded to a contender as insurance.
Good on Gagner. Damn straight.
jake70,
It’s actually just amazing. I think it is mental. It feels like the whole building just puckers the asshole with about 3 mins left, looking for the Bettman pt, and then boom there it is. It’s unreal how often we cave late. This one wasn’t as bad as usual, but it’s still really something.
One good thing, Dubnyk’s back in Thursday.
That was a very winnable game if you take the Kings squad that showed up, and yet they lost (without a loser point, to boot). In a shortened season, that spells early golf games.
Hall was a beauty again. Just wished he had better finish.
Yakupov was good – maybe his best game yet.
Khabibulin made me eat my words.
Eberle’s lazy backchecking was on display tonight. The kid’s a wizard in the offensive zone but more of a bystander too often in his own end.
Whitney needs to be traded or sat.
And, god damn it, take more shots and drive to the net.
#Oilers outchanced #LAKings 19 to 6, but failed to shut down attack in final minutes, lose game. Blech.
— David Staples (@dstaples) February 20, 2013
The drapes, the drapes, the drapes are on fire.
You’d think after setting a franchise record for shots last game and the 6 goals that resulted the Oilers would be thinking shoot. But, nope.
They only scored on six of those shots and the other fifty shots were totally wasted so what was the point of all of those shots. Really, I would rather have a team that took 10 shots but scored on all of them!
Idiots!
I wonder if a sarcasm thingy was needed on that one?
Oops, apparently this was edited to 19 16 shortly after.
sending a wrong message if they send paajarvi down to okc, the kid is growing each game and is sensitive. i understand waiver wire rule but this guy is becoming a good checking nhl”er. i think a demotion to the minors would hurt more than help>
That was very frustrating. I haven’t actively cheered for a team in 15 years. It’s not all fun.
Hall and Hemsky were very good, and I continue to like Paajarvi. Wish he would get more ice time. The most noteworthy player to me, and not in a good way, was Justin Schultz. He doesn’t look like the same player as the beginning of the year. He’s still an asset but that other guy was all over the ice jumping into the play at every opportunity.
Oh, and I take everything back I said about Ellerbe. A fifth round pick for that statue might be generous. Peckham is still terrible though.
[Edit] He won’t, but Hansen should get a serious suspension. I’m tired of guys getting injured on cheap shots. Suspensions should start at five games and go up in groups of five. No more Shanahan reading of the tea leaves and nonsense excuses like “reactionary” plays. You target the head with an elbow, you hit the head with an elbow, you sit five games. Next time, you sit ten. Also, ban hard plastic equipment.
I know I tend to oversimplify things, but really, what is so complicated about this?
That dinosaur Don Cherry mentioned something like that in the mid-nineties…..
