OILERS AT BLUE JACKETS, G 12 (12-13) 10.2.13

The Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets don’t really have much of a rivalry, they’ve been poor clubs for years and spent their time miles and miles from the playoffs. Columbus made the playoffs one time–2009–with Ken Hitchock as their coach and names like Rick Nash, Kristian Huselius, Manny Malhotra and Jan Hejda leading the way. Since 2000, the year the Jackets entered the league, Edmonton has been in the playoffs three times out of 12 sorties–2001, 2003, 2006–and since then they’ve been at the bottom of the league standings.

About the only time you see the two teams together is at their draft, with their tables often side by side (tables go in draft order) and their choices easily comparable as the years go by:

  • 2007: Gagner v Voracek.
  • 2012: Yakupov v Murray.

Long  way to go on both draft years, I’ll take the Oilers pair and consider it a good day but you could certainly make an argument for Voracek over Gagner and the other race is just getting started.

The ninja people have a new toy (thanks to Woodguy for the link and the head’s up) that gives us a look at a player’s usage over his career. Sam Gagner:

pu gagner capture

If it is unreadable click on it and that might help, I think this is an excellent way to look at a player’s usage over several seasons. Gagner has been in the blue (positive) since arriving  but facing easy qual comp and getting (for the most part) good to excellent zone starts. This season the zone starts are more severe and the qual comp is easily the most difficult he’s faced, and we have a rote luftballon. Taylor Hall graph is here, fun toy.

Yesterday the Oilers faced the Red Wings, who feature two of the greatest centermen of the era (Datsyuk, Zetterberg). I heard a lot of talk on the broadcast about faceoff failures, but for me the game showed how far the Oilers are from being able to match up on the road against clubs like Detroit. Gagner-Hemsky are posting CorsiRel numbers that show them struggling, and that line needs to perform at par (imo) in order for the team to make the second season. The Qual comp numbers (and I know its early and we do have to be careful with the qual comp results) show the Hall line is getting the hard matching giant opponents, and his line is also king of CorsiRel.

That’s a concern, folks. I can see why RK moved the rookie off that line (although adding Hall didn’t help to my eye) for the tough road game.

I’m going to be a Krueger fan for a long time. After a loss in Detroit and facing his toughest early test today in Columbus (this team needs a win, in fact an easy win would be grand) the coach had this to say:

  • Krueger: “They’re willing to put in the work, and more than anything it’s about learning how to win,” Krueger said. “They’re pushing each other in the right direction and we’re making steps every day.”

Oilers didn’t send Chris VandeVelde back after yesterday’s game, so that means Eric Belanger is not a certainty to play this afternoon in Columbus.

I’m going to have an article up on Theo Peckham at ON later, but I wonder if the Oilers will cut down from their current 8D when he is recalled. Currently the Oilers–with Ryan Jones close and Belanger likely to come off IR today–have this 23-man roster:

  1. G Devan Dubnyk
  2. G Nikolai Khabibulin
  3. D Justin Schultz
  4. D Ladislav Smid
  5. D Jeff Petry
  6. D Nick Schultz
  7. D Ryan Whitney
  8. D Corey Potter
  9. D Mark Fistric
  10. D Theo Peckham (on roster, on rehab)
  11. C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  12. C Sam Gagner
  13. C Ryan Smyth
  14. C Chris VandeVelde
  15. L Taylor Hall
  16. L Teemu Hartikainen
  17. L Magnus Paajarvi
  18. L Ben Eager
  19. L Darcy Hordichuk (4 games, 2:02 ATOI)
  20. R Ales Hemsky
  21. R Jordan Eberle
  22. R Nail Yakupov
  23. R Lennart Petrell

It is easy to get Eric Belanger (Chris VandeVelde) on the roster, and you could get Ryan Jones back on the roster by sending out Paajarvi. However, he’s averaging 10 minutes a night and playing well. I think moving off one of the defensemen via trade is the better way, and if ST can find a new home for Peckham (or Whitney) then it makes sense to do it now.

Khabibulin was very good yesterday. Credit where due, I guess rehab assignments are overrated.

You’ll see a lot of numbers today, but the important ones are 2.18 (goals per game) and shooting percentage (8%, 24 goals on 300 shots). That number was 9.5 a year ago, meaning the Oilers would have 4 or 5 more goals if the shooting percentage from last season had followed along.

By request, changing the channel.

    BlacqueJacque:
    Woodguy,

What do you think of John Shannon’s point that they almost always try to carry it in, rather than dump?I think he’s onto something – the defenders couldn’t stack up like that if they had to be ready for Taylor Hall, Magnus Paajarvi, or Nail Yakupov retrieving a dump-in.

Hit the blue line doing 100mph, if they are standing up, soft dump and oilers will have 2 players at the puck before opp can turn around.

  2. striatic says:

    Principe is next level.

  3. Oilanderp says:

I’ve been waiting for something like this (problems entering zone) ever since I became aware that apparently the advanced stats guys say dump and chase doesn’t work. I was brought up to play good ol dump n chase n bang n smash hockey (unless you have an obvious clear lane to enter). Especially early in the game: gives you an opportunity to make the defence worry and look behind them, wincing for what’s coming all game.

  4. leadfarmer says:

Paajarvi on a powerplay. Now I’ve seen everything.

  5. spoiler says:

Not sure about this 1-2-2 PP set-up with the personnel they have out there. Scary-o.

  6. VanOil says:

Is that a field goal or a rugby try?

  7. Lowetide says:

Oilers getting another penaty here. Very poor performance, Ralph Krueger better get a handle on this team.

  8. FPB94 says:

Idk why y’all want a bunch of very skilled (but thin) guys to dump it in. Worst strategy IMO.

Losing the puck at the blue just looks worst than dumping it straight to a dman.

  9. delooper says:

I don’t think it’s good for the game to have the referees calling so many erratic and difficult to explain penalties. If they were reasonable penalties, okay. But they’ve mostly been borderline.

  10. godot10 says:

A 100 mph fastball is an ineffective pitch, unless you also have a good change-up.

Carry the puck in, by all means, but you have to chip-n-chase occasionally to keep the defense honest.

  11. Lucinius says:

I actually didn’t mind MPS on that powerplay; he did decently.

As for the penalties.. eh. Refs suck all across the league. Thankfully Dubnyk is A+ lately.

  12. BlacqueJacque says:

Man, when you know the coaches will be breaking down the Blue Jackets’ power play and using it to illustrate what the Oilers should do, it’s pretty depressing.

  13. Lowetide says:

Dubnyk may actually be on fire.

  14. fuzzy muppet says:

Dubnyk is standing on his head!

  15. striatic says:

the oilers don’t deserve Dubnyk right now.

  16. Southern Oil says:

That was a great PK shift from MPS. Now if he can only chip in a few goals

  17. Lowetide says:

Man these refs are bad. I make it a point not to complain and don’t want to bitch, but good lord this is horrible.

  18. Lowetide says:

Eberle is crazy good with reactions.

  19. 48 percent body fat says:

So how many of you think Eberle is still worth 6M a year (when we knew we had all these number one picks to sign) and how many of you would give Nuge 6M after this year with very little production 5 on 5 in his career.

Yes they are young but that is the point not to sign them to 6M right away.

If all five sign for 500k less that saves use 2.5 M. A very good third line center and depth player.

  20. delooper says:

Nice one Eberle. That’s a good goal.

  21. BlacqueJacque says:

Holy crap, Jordan Eberle is being introduced to some Mean Regression rather than regression to mean.

  22. Lucinius says:

Not sure that’ll count. Looked high.

  23. Rebilled says:

    VanOil,

since you brought it up, Canada did beat Scotland today in the rugby 7′s final. World Champs! The final was in the States, Canada beat the US in the semis to get to the finals. The NBC coverage did a great job interviewing a US team member for the majority of the 2nd half. Classic.

  24. striatic says:

    dammit.

  25. Woodguy says:

14 needs the NHL war room to get hiom off the schnide.

  26. spoiler says:

6 M a year will be cheap in year 3 with any growth in salary cap. For all the young stars.

  28. Gret99zky says:

Dubey is a bright shining light this year.

Spengler may have boosted his confidence.

  29. Woodguy says:

    Fuck you Zebra!

  30. leadfarmer says:

    48 percent body fat,

You mean the oilers gave contracts on prediction not production. Thats never happened before.

  31. VanOil says:

    Rebilled,

Good to hear. That is a big success for Canada.

  32. Woodguy says:

    godot10:

    Agreed.

Hit the line fast, if the lane is there, take it, if not then soft chip.

Hard dump shouldn’t be used with skilled men 5v4.

I love your sense of humor. Very dry. Like a Churchill Martini.

  34. delooper says:

I was about to say the Oilers look badly outplayed this game. But things seem to be turning around.

  35. Lowetide says:

The funny thing is (puts on his kevlar body suit) Eberle’s current level of performance is reasonable based on his full resume.

  36. leadfarmer says:

These calls are getting ridiculous even when they are on the other team. Its like a completely different sport when the playoffs start.

  37. Rebilled says:

Has RK played #94 this period?

  38. Lucinius says:

Time to see this powerplay again… Which powerplay will we see? The good one or the ohmygodtheysuck one?

Really sucks to say, but I do agree with the ref on the high stick by Eberle. I don’t believe it should have counted (but I was hoping!).

    I’ve liked Yak’s game tonight.

Best Oiler has been Dubnyk by a country mile, though.

  39. Gret99zky says:

Hit and run in the parking lot.

    Fan right or fan wrong?

  40. leadfarmer says:

    Lowetide,

He got a contract as a tough minute outscorer even though he is an easy minute outscorer. I think in the long run the contract is fine, but the next couple years you could have easily take 1.5 million off.

  41. Lucinius says:

Horrible duo work there by RNH and Hall. Five feet apart, maybe. Idiotic.

  42. BlacqueJacque says:

    One-too-many-pass strikes again.

Hall-Nuge-Eberle finding chemistry though. It was almost quite literally the Taylor Hall power play, though.

  43. 48 percent body fat says:

    VanOil,

The salary cap is not going to continue to grow at the same rate. Law of diminishing returns. We have also had a ten million scale back and max 4M growth next year. Also with all the make whole that is lost revenue. Less for the cap to grow. Dont forget it is also 50 percent and not 57 so that is even slower growth.

We need to stop jumping the gun and signing based on a HORCOFF YEAR.

If nuge gets 30 points would you sign him for 6M? Pretty dumb management. Look at Subban. Awesome work by the GM there. Unfortunately we have set a stupid precedent.

  44. leadfarmer says:

I think they put in a rule where the oilers pp can only score on a diving header or something.

  45. spoiler says:

    Woodguy: Agreed.

Hit the line fast, if the lane is there, take it, if not then soft chip.

Hard dump shouldn’t be used with skilled men 5v4.

Can still use a version of the hard dump. Watch CBJ enter the zone on the PP… The puck carrier “allows” the two Oiler forwards to trap him to one of the walls at the blue line, but when he fires it in he rifles it around the boards to the empty wall on the other side of the ice, where he has two CBJ forwards stacked vertically waiting for the puck. Smart.

  46. danny says:

What the hell is that Fan Right Fan Wrong crap anyways? How is something as dumb as that approved let alone sponsored?

  47. leadfarmer says:

    48 percent body fat,

The thing is they dont need to sign him this year. They can sign him after next year. Just like the 14 and 4 contracts could have waited.

  48. crude says:

Can the Oilers just score a couple fucking goals already?!

  49. Lowetide says:

Oilers should be up by at least 2 despite the shot clock. If they lose, this could get ugly on the homestand. I do like the blue without Whitney, maybe that’s just by eye we’ll have to see.

    Dubnyk. Very nice.

  50. Rebilled says:

    danny,

Telus must have extremely hot girls working for them.

  51. Rebilled says:

    Diving. Woozynewski.

  52. VanOil says:

    48 percent body fat,

I am counting on at least one team move and maybe two new franchises this CBA which will grow the HHR inline with during the last one. But we will need better Refs for that to happen.

  53. danny says:

That was a dive by Wiz.

  54. Woodguy says:

Wis should have got 2 for diving there as well.

Funny how a stick on his left foot makes his right foot fly in the air.

    Asshole.

  55. FPB94 says:

I like Nikita Nikitin, but it’s pretty sad when he’s the focal point of your PP.

  56. Lucinius says:

Diving has to be the only thing refs don’t call anymore.

  57. Lucinius says:

Columbus is due for a goal on the powerplay.. just based on percentages if nothing else.

  58. raventalon40 says:

Wow the whole Columbus PP unit are left handed shots.

  59. leadfarmer says:

Coming into this season i was expecting a lot of 6-4 wins and losses. Was not expecting this.

  60. raventalon40 says:

    Does Petry think he’s Fistric?

  61. Lowetide says:

Dubnyk is Bernie freaking Parent tonight. The Oilers are shitty. Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty

    Shitty

  62. delooper says:

If the NHL wants to have games that are continual power plays and 4-on-4, why not just take that step and play 4 on 4 all the time? That way penalties are killers. Or they could make all penalties in the first half of the season count for double. So instead of a 2-minute minor, you get a 4-minute double minor for the same play.

  63. Lucinius says:

Oiler goalies have to be classified as at risk for heart attacks, right?

  64. Gret99zky says:

Gagner tied the 8 point record last year.

He’s trying for the turnovers in a game record tonight.

  65. BlacqueJacque says:

Holy motherluvin shit that was one heck of a defensive play by Schultz.

  66. Rebilled says:

    CALDER!

  67. spoiler says:

Jesus Schultz… Fucking Lidstrom like there.

  68. striatic says:

    Lowetide,

    shitty?

  69. delooper says:

Bad and good for Schultz. He’s fast.

  70. Lowetide says:

    WHAT A PLAY BY SCHULTZ!

    Him and Dubnyk are good.

Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty Shitty

  71. godot10 says:

Jordan Eberle is still getting chances like crazy. It is just an adjustment to more minutes and tougher quality of competition. Precision dulled a touch by all that triple A pitching the first half of the season.

Didn’t Nugent-Hopkins have something like six goal at Christmas his draft year. He was primarily a playmaker. We all knew this. His full ice game is much improved over last year. If Eberle were finishing, Nugent-Hopkins would be collecting assists, and the boo birds wouldn’t be whining.

Hall tilts the ice like perhaps no other left wing in the game, and the whiners are out there too.

When the worm turns, it will be a marvel to behold.

  72. voxwah says:

Holy shit Shultz. Excellent d play on the backcheck

    Captain Happy: If you prefer:

    MPS 2010/11
    P/60 – 1.36

    Granlund 2012/13
    P/60 – 1.44

Now, I would think most observers would agree Granlund has been a little underwhelming but it’s still early and the Wild, in general, have been struggling so far.

I expect by the end of this season things could look a little different.

Again that stat is misleading, that P/60 number represents 5v5 only.

    5v4

    MPS 3.45 P/60
    Grandlund 0.00 P/60

I don’t see why MPS should be punished because Granlund has done nothing at all with 19 mins of PP time.

Have the Wild really been struggling or is that simply their level of play?

Just think of how you are treating Granlund when you talk about MPS. As LT has said a million times before prospects do not develop in a straight line.

  74. LMHF#1 says:

All of a sudden we can’t hit the damn net. Time for some new (composite) lumber for some of these guys.

  79. Woodguy says:

I think the Oilers don’t have to do that with their talent.

Good if you can get it to work, but opens up more variance on puck retrival.

  87. hunter1909 says:

Justin Schultz is the ghost of one of the Montreal Canadiens greatest ever defencemen. No idea which one, any ideas?

J.C. Trembley had a mean style like Schultz. Serge Savard? Maybe not if Savard was nearly as great as Orr pre-broken legs.

Bruce can figure out the physics of this.

That play killed it for me. Schultz is going to be a great defenceman.

  88. sliderule says:

BY MY EYE (feel free to skip) the real problem is Nuge’s shoulder. He can’t take draws, can’t shoot, can’t pass like he was doing last year… I think that’s why there is little dumping and chasing on the PP, he’ll get busted. I think Kreuger gave him permission to surrender the face-offs, it’s pathetic.

Everything else about him is fine. His positioning is sublime, higher level shit, can skate like the wind and in stealth mode, but something ain’t right. It’s tough for me to watch as he is probably my fave of the kids.

    Go Nuge!

Never drink on a Sunday, unless it is a long weekend in summertime (my week starts early Monday).

The Oilers are not sharp imo beyond the PK and of course the goalie and then certain individuals. For the third period I think Krueger should revert to the old lines and pairings then work on things during the three off days this coming week.

It’s a mess. Man. Columbus is maybe the only team in the league that isn’t ahead after those two periods.

Broke down and purchased Center Ice this weekend. Last two games are my first of the season. Like the aggressive forecheck, love DD’s play. Everything else pretty much sucks.

  107. striatic says:

    huge period.

panic time if the Oilers blow it in this one.

  108. Rebilled says:

    BlacqueJacque,

Coffee, Drambui, Rum, and Fireball. It’s family day in BC tomorrow.

  109. Lowetide says:

WG: Eager did it again just now.

  110. Lucinius says:

Big problem defensively is how weak they are with their sticks.

  111. Smarmy says:

bookjLe: Fully Agree – one of the stupidest things I have seen since the NHL superheroes – remember those?

Were those the spots where Keith Tkachuk wore hockey gear and picked your car door lock when you locked your keys inside?

Oilers PP it totally perimeter and stand still. It’s amazing how often PPs go into funks doing this and still do it all the time.

  112. In the Grease says:

    Justin Schultz shoulder problem???? no!!!!!

  113. Jordan says:

Is the story here actually going to be how much this team needs Shawn Horcoff? Team has been shit since he’s been injured.

No, I’m not trolling. Dead serious. Does Horcoff really make this team that much better?

  114. Lowetide says:

    Rebilled:
    BlacqueJacque,

Next weekend, same bat time, same bat channel. :-)

  115. In the Grease says:

Thank god he’s back out, almost had an aneurysm.

Columbus announcers had me in panic mode…lol

  116. hunter1909 says:

Dubinsky and Umberger still playing Torts hockey LMAO.

  117. Lowetide says:

Man Nuge wins battles for pucks. Have we seen a teenager do that?

  118. FPB94 says:

    Man is RNH’s shot garbage.

On the good side imagine rooting for CJB: Even when you (rarely) utterly outplay teams, you still lose!

  119. spoiler says:

When do you think Nuge will be able to hit the net again? This is becoming ridiculous. I know he got one on the net in the first, but sweet baby Jesus the number of times he has missed the net this year inside of fifteen feet has been astounding.

  120. pboy says:

The problem on the PP is that the kids are isolating the puck on the boards and not using the whole ice. The one time they worked the puck to Hall on the point, they created some nice opportunities.

They can use a few good practices. I think it’s a function of a new system, an abbreviated training camp and limited practice time. These kids are too good not to figure this out.

  121. striatic says:

    Jordan,

the Oilers weren’t exactly *great* with him either.

  122. BlacqueJacque says:

    FPB94,
You can’t post that… wtf man.

    Fat lady etc. etc.

  123. spoiler says:

    Lowetide:
Man Nuge wins battles for pucks. Have we seen a teenager do that?

    Bobby Clarke.

  124. FPB94 says:

    BlacqueJacque,

I don’t trust the Oilers. I just trust CBJ’s ability to drop the ball.

  125. BlacqueJacque says:

    Lowetide,

    Crosby.

  126. nelson88 says:

The Oilers could use one of the Foligno brothers. Agree with LT wholeheartedly that they need to start scoring a few “greasy” goals.

  127. Lowetide says:

    spoiler: Bobby Clarke.

He was 20 when he hit the league. I’m sure there’s someone, maybe recently. I just don’t remember anyone that young winning so many of those battles as a teenager.

  128. DBO says:

    total dive. fuck off

  129. harrigan says:

    spoiler:

Could be a sophomore jinx kind of thing. Also, it’s easy to forget how young he still is. But yeah, it was getting ridiculous a week ago. Now, it’s gotten to the point where it’s absurd.

  130. speeds says:

    FPB94:
    Man is RNH’s shot garbage.

On the good side imagine rooting for CJB: Even when you (rarely) utterly outplay teams, you still lose!

On the plus side, if the draft were held today, CLB would be picking 2nd, 3rd (LA’s pick-Carter) and 8th overall (NYR’s pick-Nash).

  131. Smarmy says:

Lot of kids sports in Alberta are languishing if they’re counting on funds from Oilers scoring prowess.

  132. Lowetide says:

    BlacqueJacque:
    Lowetide,

    Crosby.

    Well, I’ll take that! :-)

  133. Lowetide says:

This might be Dubnyk’s best NHL game so far. 30 shots and maybe 6 that I thought were goals.

  134. Smarmy says:

You know the Jackets are going to score.

  135. sliderule says:

In fairness these back to back games are going to be brutal.

Detroit got outshot 47/31 at home so they obviously had heavy legs.

  136. delooper says:

Nice, a little sanity coming back to the Oilers game.

  137. raventalon40 says:

Whoa! The Columbus building isn’t empty

  138. FPB94 says:

    speeds,

Maybe their brass smartened up. Getting picks when a work stoppage was imminent and fuck!

  139. Lowetide says:

Well if the Oilers skaters are men they’ll go out and score one for their goalie.

  140. DBO says:

see Gagner is too small. LOL. and cue the trolls

  141. crude says:

    This is getting old.

  142. Clarkenstein says:

    Groundhog Day!

  143. delooper says:

    Damn you, Smarmy.

  144. Lucinius says:

    Knew it was coming.

  145. hunter1909 says:

    Dubnyk must let one in.

  146. BlacqueJacque says:

Oilers still at 11 shots?! Not one shot in 10 minutes in the third period?!

Dubnyk deserves to yell at some Oilers.

    WOW EBERLE… … ow Eberle :(

  147. striatic says:

    panic.

  148. hunter1909 says:

    Snap!

  149. DBO says:

And Eberle killed. Um. Good thing we have a tough guy dressed so no one takes shots at our kids

  150. Smarmy says:

Please fire all the front office for the love of god.

  151. raventalon40 says:

Newsflash: Dubnyk is but a mortal man.

  152. Lucinius says:

Oilers need one of their game changers to, you know, change the game.

  153. FPB94 says:

    DBO,

Ah please. Like Hordichuk has something to do with it. He just checked Eberle because he was trying to score.

    #Notthe80′sanymore

  154. DBO says:

clean hit. But tough guys stop those I thought.

  155. BlacqueJacque says:

You know when you’ve hit rock bottom, you’re supposed to quit craving crack or heroin or alcohol or first overall picks, and there’s nowhere lower to go?

The Oilers brought a shovel and their own casket.

  156. Lowetide says:

Looked like a clean hit from here. Right?

  157. DBO says:

    FPB94,

Sorry was my sarcasm not clear enough?

  158. Smarmy says:

Eberle has to go out and do a Datsyuk now.

  159. Lucinius says:

It was clean. I think his visor bit him in the face when he hit the ice, though.

  160. hunter1909 says:

Since the Oilers obviously don’t give a fucking damn whether or not they win games, I’m hoping for another regular time loss, and another, until they get bag skated ha ha they could fill the arena!

  161. FPB94 says:

    DBO,

    I blame the Interwebz.

  162. VanOil says:

Sick to my stomach thinking about Eberle being hurt. But the neighbors New Years feast is starting to smell good.

  163. nelson88 says:

saskie boy. Eberle will be fine. looked like his visor hit his nose when he went down

  164. DBO says:

    Lowetide,

And yeah it was clean. Merely commenting on how many feel we need tough guys to “protect” our stars. try scoring on a PP, that’ll protect them. And again, it was a clean hit, hell of a gutsy play by Eberle cutting in like that Anderson esque.

  165. Lucinius says:

Smyth is the one you move up, really?

  166. hunter1909 says:

Tutyins playing nice, because he doesn’t want to get his future Oiler teammates mad.

  167. striatic says:

the hit didn’t mess him up.

he landed face first and his nose went into his visor.

  168. Lowetide says:

Paajarvi with the Pete Mahovlich and he almost made it.

  169. DBO says:

And yeah, we don’t deserve to win this

  170. FPB94 says:

Magnus Paajarvi, the future Todd Marchant.

  171. Lucinius says:

This team is eventually going to get better, right?

    Right!?

  172. BlacqueJacque says:

We’re back to the original lines.

  173. hunter1909 says:

Oilers seriously do not worry about their young player’s getting injured.

Oilers are one rough hockey team to play for, lol.

  174. Smarmy says:

    Lucinius:
This team is eventually going to get better, right?

    Right!?

No. The injuries will start happening and it will get worse. Much much worse.

  175. fuzzy muppet says:

IMO. this effort is worse than the SJ game..

They should be ashamed of this game.

  176. Ryan says:

This is not a good hockey team. 11 is optimistic.

    Cue the draft watch posts.

    Any updates on Seth jones?

  177. harrigan says:

Boy, I’m starting to think that without Dubnyk the playoff hunt would already be over for this team.

  178. Lowetide says:

Lucinius: They’ve lost the melody, this happens to young kids. As Blacque Jacque mentioned, they’re back to the original lines and that makes sense to me. These last few minutes are going to be about hanging on to a road point, might as well give yourself every chance.

  179. FPB94 says:

Hey, there’s Colton Gillies. What a terrible pick.

  180. DBO says:

Look on the bright side. We are winning the faceoff battle!

    or not

  181. Lowetide says:

    Ryan Smyth takes. another. penalty.

  182. hunter1909 says:

    FPB94:
Magnus Paajarvi, the future Todd Marchant.

WTF I know you’re a Hab’s fan; I could have sworn I’d read Peter Mahovilich.

  183. Rebilled says:

    wow

  184. DBO says:

shocker. Smyth another penalty. Healthy scratch maybe? Been ugly. No training camp has hurt him as much as anyone.

  185. spoiler says:

Ethan friggin Smyth… Was it a penalty of “aggression”?

  186. Lucinius says:

Fuck you Smyth. FUCK YOU MOREAU-WANNABE!

I feel like weeping in a corner.

  187. fuzzy muppet says:

Why isn’t smyth stapled to the bench?

    Accountability my ass

  188. crude says:

    oooh boy Smyth

  189. bookjLe says:

Smitty needs a seat in the press box to get a different view of the game.

  190. delooper says:

Smyth is doing a pretty good job of sinking this game.

  191. hunter1909 says:

Ryan Smyth = the new captainethanmoreau

  192. jake70 says:

Ethan Moreau has a 94 voodoo doll, sticks a pin in it every time Smyth is in the O-zone.

  193. nelson88 says:

dump, chase. 30 seconds in the offensive zone and a good scoring chance. please diagram for future use.

  194. FPB94 says:

Smyth would be a dressed HS if he were a young guy.

    Where’s Robert Nilsson.

  195. striatic says:

didn’t take much to explode that stick.

  196. raventalon40 says:

    Smarmy,

I don’t want to sound like the Oilers should be in a panic here… but I feel like with all the promise and skill this team has they’re not willing to do all the tough things and go to the hard places to score the hard goals. Not every goal is going to be a highlight reel goal. For chrissakes, Hemsky’s been our grittiest top 6 guy… time to move up a guy like MPS who has earned it.

At some point the discussion about drafting BPA and trading from a position of strength to attain a position of need may need to start. I’m not saying now, or soon, but if this isn’t rock bottom (losing in an effort like this to Columbus) then I don’t know what is. Too many duplicated skill sets and we’ve seen how that matches up on the road against good home teams like Detroit. I don’t know who you would be willing to give up since all the Oiler kids are golden but can we realistically expect that the top 6 will look like this for the next decade?

  197. spoiler says:

    No hands!!!

  198. fuzzy muppet says:

    MAGGIE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  199. Lowetide says:

    PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJAAAAAAAAAAAAARVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

    Nice play Gagner.
