STARS V BARONS 2.3.13
The OKC Barons are in action tonight and tomorrow afternoon (plus Monday night) in one of the AHL’s charming weekend schedules. The club has found the range of late with solid outings, but playing tonight in Cedar Park, Texas and tomorrow afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina doesn’t really seem fair.
Lineup currently via Tend the Farm, and they have a fabulous write up here.
Likely Oklahoma City Barons Lineup:
Philippe Cornet – Mark Arcobello – Jonathan Cheechoo
Toni Rajala – C.J. Stretch – Josh Green
Eric Hunter – Ryan Martindale – Antti Tyrvainen
Darcy Hordichuk – Tanner House – Curtis Hamilton
Brett Clark – Taylor Fedun
Randy Jones – Andrew Hotham
Martin Marincin – Colten Teubert/Alex Plante
Niko Hovinen
Backup: Yann Danis
–
I spoke to Jim Byers tonight on the radio show, it is one hour in. He is such a gent. You can download the show here.
–
Hall update: apparently his injury may keep him out of tomorrow’s game. That’s fine. Marathon not a sprint. Besides, he’ll probably get charged in Minnesota.
–
Among the things Byers passed along: Pelss doesn’t sound like he’s going to be out much longer, and Pitlick is status quo so I don’t think we’ll see him for awhile.
–
CJ Stretch. Damn fine name.

did Cheechoo get called up? I’d like to see it. he’s earned it,
Line combos for #OKCBarons, LW-C-RW: Cornet-Arcobello-Cheechoo; Rajala-Stretch-Green; Hunter-Martindale-Tyrvainen; Hordichuk-House-Hamilton
DBO: No. I think Hartikainen can come off the IR so its likely Paajarvi gets sent down soon.
Maybe Potter to the IR with the concussion to free up a spot.

Defence pairings for #OKCBarons: Clark & Hotham; Jones & Teubert; Marincin & Plante
Lowetide,
Just got the Cheechoo thing from a tweet CopperandBlue retweeted from an OKC guy. No idea if it’s true. he couldn’t be called up anyways, he’d have to sign an NHL contract wouldn’t he?
gotta say. Move Jones back to the 3rd and run Cheechoo with gagner and Hemsky. The guy plays physical and can shoot, Better then we’ve done so far.
So no Fedun? Is he injured or a HS? Does he get HSed often?
Squid: They usually rotate through and of course this is a crazy weekend. But no, Fedun hasn’t been a HS much this season.
Interesting on Cheechoo, wonder if Hall gets IR’d.
Khaira has a goal tonight.
Lowetide,
That makes sense, and is a relief at the same time. I have had high hopes for Fedun since his training camp a couple years ago and feel for the soft-spoken guy who had to overcome such adversity. I love players that succeed with desire and brainpower, of which Fedun seems to be an example of. His timeline to the bigs might be a little quicker that the younger prospects as well.
Cheechoo (Cornet, Arcobello)
Squid: I met him last summer at the Team 1260 golf tournament. I introduced myself and told him I had been following his progress and he seemed surprised. Not in a fake way, genuinely surprised someone knew who he was and what he’d been through.
He has been a guy I’m cheering for since.
Nash with his first NHL goal tonight.
Corey from Hurricane’s blog Shutdownline tweeted:
Corey S @ShutdownLine
I hope Nash likes it in Raleigh because he might be with the Hurricanes for quite some time.
LT,
I’ve read that Tuebert is sitting out quite a bit lately. (more than the others) True?
Nice goal by Marincin just out of the penalty box
Marincin (Hotham)
Marincin (Hotham)
What ever happened to Nathan Deck?
Edit: Looks like he’s back in Stockton, wonder why? Not gritty enough or something stupid like that.
Woodguy,
You can add 2 assists to Nash as well… so far, going into the 3rd.
Yes. He’s lost his way. I still make the Penner deal though, 19th overall that turned into Klefbom is a nice piece for the rebuild. Teubert isn’t going to make it, gents.
Lowetide,
Really not surprised about Teubert, he looked awful in OKC earlier in the year. When you’re scratched regularly in favour of Alex Plante, it says a lot about your career trajectory.
Jim Byers is a great he deserves a shot a the show!
OKC currently showing Oil levels of collapse.
Due to the Cheechoo/Hall roomers above I have been reading up. So far I have learned that a) there are some very nasty people on this interweby thing and b) Double hernia’s can slow a guy down especially if he not to quick to begin with. c) confidence is important and playing with Big Joe Helps.
Cheechoo talks about his hips locking up due to the surgery. Unlocking the hips is one of the mantras of my favorite function strength guru Gray Cook. If the Gray can reduce injuries in the NFL and turn Pro Golfers into real athletes maybe he could help the Oilers. Cheechoo could also help the Oilers if he can skate again, I can’t tell from the radio. Has any one seen him good yet? Oilers don’t have a guy that can cycle like Big Joe but the have a few that can saucer a pass. Confidence seems OK in OKC.
I did not like the Nash trade at the time. Marincin has calmed the waters a little but still. C’s are vital.

Cogliano with the hat trick.
Here’s the original post with comments
http://lowetide.blogspot.ca/2010/06/oilers-trade-riley-nash.html?m=1
In other news….
Andrew Cogliano with a hat trick against Phoenix in two periods.
With 8 goals and 13 points, he is on pace for 33 goals and 55 points over an 82 game season.
Not bad for a third line player who is also +10.
I hope the Oilers enjoy that 3rd round pick.
Lowetide,
Those people claiming Stu the Average-Above average bastard is terrible because he was the scout in Nash’s area when they drafted him might have to back down a little. Seems like getting an NHL player in the first round out of that draft is a success.
And Tuebert scores.
All the noise was that he didn’t want to play in the AHL and the Oilers wouldn’t guarantee him a spot.
Not sure how much of it was true.
He was going to walk after the draft for whatever reason, so they had to do it.
And reading that thread, I said the same damn thing.
Sorry.
I have found some trades I would like to make courtesy of HNIC Satellite Hotstove.
HNIC’s 2nd intermissions are making the 1st seem sensible and that’s hard to do. Elliot is the star Ron can stay on the road but he needs better wingers. I would do the following:
Bring Hrudey back from Colour Commentary. Promote Campbell into this roll she is wasted doing player interviews and has shone when given the chance. To make room demote PJ Stock to doing fluff peaces on player equipment and training techniques or just mopping the floors. He can fill in for Heatley when Heatley’s grumpiness hits toxic levels and the nation needs a break.
LT both Elliot and Campbell would be good guest for your radio show, to bad they then to work Saturdays.
never apologize for a good memory.
I sent an email to Elliotte this week and am hopeful. Gotta say i’m a fan.
leadfarmer,
Which would put him in a tie for the lead with the oilers. I knew someone would get good use out of one of our midgets.

Hehe, yeah, Teubert is trying to prove LT wrong.
My hopes for Teubert as an Oilers prospect are all but gone too, but he does seem like just the kind of player who could put it together at age 25 or 26. His issues are mostly hockey sense, reads and such. He’s got great try, likes to hit, sticks up for teammates, and his mobility is fine (that is, he doesn’t have Plante’s cement feet). If he eventually learns to play defense, he’s a solid 3rd pairing NHLer. I wouldn’t bet on it happening, but he doesn’t have any fatal flaws to prevent a long NHL career (as a guy like Plante does). And he’s not that far away right now.
By the way, Teubert may have been HSed a time or two, but he’s played 50 of 52 games before tonight. Plante is the guy who’s really played himself into the PB.
Cogs shooting 27.6%. Just sayin.
Just spent an frustrating few minutes trying to find Cogliano’s 2013 Face% to through cold water on his great night/season. This a makes me poor/nasty human being right along with JP apparently.
Not that relevant when he plays on the wing. Good thing we did not think of that.
I wish him all the best in career he seems to be a decent human being and it a tough league to make a living in as a smallish man by NHL standards.
Looking forward to the Elliot interview already hope he finds time.
Way to not mention that he’s shooting 27.6% this year and went 13-13-26 last year in 82 games.
Oh, its you.
Of course its the worst trade in the history of the Oilers.
Carry on.
Ha!
I just did the math too.
*slow clap*
*raises glass*
Cheechoo (Clark)
Well done
Do you think that in the light of Hordichuk and others of his ilick being waved that this year/lockout will be seen as the time when the designated enforcer/goon jumped the shark at the NHL level?
Cheechoo is a ex-shark making a case for a job.
Khaira 1-1-2
Kellen Jones 1-0-1
I thought Clark was going to do a Smid there behind the net, but he made it work. 4-4 midway through the 3rd.
What’s everyone drinking? My wife feels like a lush because no one has mentioned alcohol and we’re in the pail.
You are truly something.
You come on here and troll everyone with “the Oilers are not big enough”.
Then you come and troll with a cogs hat-trick (even though his SP% is currently more than double his career average) trying to make it seem like a giant mistake to give up a 5’10″ 180 lb 3rd line forward.
Also it was a 2nd round pick, not a 3rd.
You manage to speak out of both sides of your mouth within two days, quite impressive.
I really don’t know why I (or anyone else) still responds to you, but it probably has something to do with the same reason we are Oiler fans…
I wasn’t but will start as its a hockey night after all. Crystal Skull and San Pellegrino Grapefruit are calling. As I feel like a girl drink drunk tonight
Lowetide,
Some Sleeman now. Had some homemade wine earlier.
I am getting a 55-56 point season for Cheechoo using Gabriel Desjardins NHLE’s though the age variable is as suspect as his skating. I have not used his calculations before so I may be off and Newfy Vodka is not going to help.
Stone cold sober, but now that you mention it, a Writer’s Tears on the rocks is being served up.
I think the Oilers could give Cheechoo a two week tryout contract at the NHL level to bring him up.
Barons win in the shootout. Green and Arcobello with the goals.
Barons win 5-4 in the shootout. Big win for a team that needs the points and has a weekend from hell ahead.
I don’t disagree but who would you send down, I figure Paarjavi is on his way down to make room for Hartikainen and/or Horcoff? I can’t see the Oilers brain trust parting with Eager or Petrell my two choices.
I wasn’t trying to be nasty:)
Cogs is a fine player, but he’s not going to score 33G and 55Pts. And he hasn’t been a plus player since his rookie year (+1).
In terms of Cheechoo’s speed – it’s pretty average. Don’t notice it much one way or the other. I could see him being signed and called up at some point this year.
I would like a OKC writer/blogger to provide player grades ala McCrudy/Willis. Maybe the ice girl Jessica will do it she seems to be passionate and opinionated about the Barons.
http://www.okcbarons.com/index.cfm?FA=icegirls&RA=showDetail&staffID=94
Cherry is such an old looney he just suggested he does not want a free trip to Russia next year. Maybe if goes and likes it he will give Yak a break.
jp,
Sorry to imply you were being nasty, I was feeling shame for my own behavior. Good to hear Cheechoo’s legs are not as bad I feared reading some truely nasty Ottawa commentators.
If Cheechoo keeps scoring 3 points a night something is going to happen.
As long as he isn’t slower than Smyth.
Seems like Tyler Bunz has some traction here lately. Has put together 6 or 7 nice games in late Feb-early March. Won again tonight and save% is slowly creeping back towards .900 after his miserable early numbers.
That sound fantastic.
I like greyhounds and that’s like a sparkly greyhound.
I have not had a greyhound but after Googling it I will add it to my repertoire, thanks. I was warned when I was first introduced to San Pellegrino Grapefruit (Pompelmo) that I would not be able to drink it with out adding Gin or Vodka. She was right! I keep trying as it is nice neat, but I know it can be very nice with booze so why fight it.
Greyhounds are my favorite vodka drink after a well made Caesar with pickled asparagus.
My wife keeps us stocked on Pelegrino (Costco has great prices on cases of cans)
I’ll have to tell her to pick up some grapefruit.
So? 100% of the shots that go in count as goals, and 0% of those that don’t do.
Zelepukin,
Which he is.
My point about bringing up Cogs is not that we made a bad trade, since he had to go due to our small size. It was about some teams use 2nd round picks to make their team better and some use them to draft guys that if they are lucky will be waiver fodder, aka Moroz.
Just making sure… but it’s natural that I hate the Texas Stars, right?
They are damn good and I hate them.
oh yeah, absolutely. Anything Dallas related.
No, that’s wrong.
