COYOTES AT OILERS G40 (12-13) 10.4.13

Taylor Hall put the Anaheim game into perspective: “You never know what can happen, but this was one we had to win.” After that, who needs analysis?

Plenty of interesting writing about the Oilers in the last 24 hours. I suggest reading:

I would only add that season over season comparisons are difficult this year, because the current Oilers doesn’t have any games scheduled against the soft underbelly of the NHL. Either way, I enjoyed both reads.

IN THIS WORLD, THERE’S TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE MY FRIEND

It’s kind of a funny thing. If we list the current Oilers who were drafted by the club, we get the following list:

  1. Nail Yakupov (2012)
  2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011)
  3. Taylor Hall (2010)
  4. Magnus Paajarvi (2009)
  5. Anton Lander (2009)
  6. Jordan Eberle (2008)
  7. Teemu Hartikainen (2008)
  8. Sam Gagner (2007)
  9. Jeff Petry (2006)
  10. Theo Peckham (2006)
  11. Chris VandeVelde (2005)
  12. Devan Dubnyk (2004)
  13. Ales Hemsky (2001)
  14. Shawn Horcoff (1998)
  15. Ryan Smyth (1994)

With the exception of Justin Schultz, how many Oilers procured outside the draft are vital to the team’s fortunes? Smid and Schultz the elder? It’s a damn short list. That’s the Lowe/Tambellini part of the list, and we’re missing a few Ryan Smyth seasons courtesy the GM, too.

april 10 st

Not much to say, we’ll have to wait until Saturday night to see if we’re talking playoffs or draft. Speaking of which, I’m kind of up in the air about who to have on this weekend–draft, Oil Kings, bloggers, etc. Any requests? Let me know.

The Oilers list of needs heading into the summer is once again too long for Steve Tambellini to manage: #1 D, #2 G, 2-way winger and a 4line C. I sincerely believe if he had two holes to fill the club would be better off, and remain hopeful MacT will have an impact. The secondary info we get re: the draft last season seems to give heavy credit to salt and pepper MacT. We wait.

PDO popped in last night and suggested the club sign Nathan Horton in the summer, then deal Hemmer for D. How would that look?

  • Nuge-Hall-Eberle
  • Gagner-Paajarvi-Horton
  • Horcoff-Hartikainen-Yakupov
  • Smid-Petry
  • New D from Hemsky deal-J Schultz

I like it, although trading Hemsky will be a tough day. What say you?

i haven’t been to an Oilers game in a million years, but from the broadcast the atmosphere seems pretty terrible.

not talking about the fans, who are understandably quiet, but the music – organ and otherwise – is just terrible and the in-arena announcers sound likewise terrible when compared to broadcasts from other arenas.

  2. rich says:

    Hey – Klinkhammer’s hurt…cue the comeback!

  3. hunter1909 says:

I love watching Yakupov, no one else during his too during powerplays.

First he’s set up for a open one timer but no one passes him the puck ever so it’s only a terrible errant pass that surprises him lol….

Then he hands the puck over it was brilliant classic Yakupov, who imo will return next season as a 40 goal man.

  4. striatic says:

and yes, this is what i’ve been reduced to commenting on : [

  5. hunter1909 says:

It’s a dubious pleasure, to watch them and not have to care at all whether or not they score, etc.

  6. wuthering says:

    I wish the visual was temporary . . .

  7. hunter1909 says:

If they could be spotted 2 goals before each game, they’d be a playoff team.

  8. VanOil says:

    striatic,

But, but what about the Octane? Oh wait I am down there with you :[

whenever they show the octane on TV everyone sitting around them looks embarrassed.

  10. crude says:

I have lost patience with this organization.

  11. Lucinius says:

I’m done for the night. Some other things I can get done and these boys just aren’t worth watching with stuff needing to get done.

    God damn.

Oilers are so bad I’m not procrastinating. Fuck that’s bad.

striatic: whenever they show the octane on TV everyone sitting around them looks embarrassed.

Of all the things management should be held accountable for over the last few years, those terrible cheerleaders may be the worst.

Also: Yep, that was a good steak sandwich.

  14. godot10 says:

Those nobodies at forward playing for Dave Tippett aren’t awful when backed by the NHL defense Phoenix has.

2 more actual NHL defensemen please.

  15. Lowetide says:

That’s the season right there. D passes the puck and it’s a CF, forwards come back and do it themselves and a clean breakout. Need better passers on the blue.

  16. hunter1909 says:

How about if the Kid Line all get fighting majors in the third?

  17. striatic says:

Lowetide: Need better passers on the blue.

Petry and Schultz Jr. not good enough?

    you don’t say ..

Don’t worry about the Dfense at all. We will re-sign Whitney and Oscar Klefbom will add the punch we need next year for sure !!!!

  22. hunter1909 says:

Visitors enjoying themselves. Appear relaxed and calm, totally in control of the game. Nice of the Oilers to accommodate them.

  23. VanOil says:

Which Oilers do you want to get to play in the world championships?

For me having Hall, Eberle and Dubby getting a chance to play on a winner might be worth it. I would rather Nuge, Yak and Schultz Jr recover in the view that they need to recover for a good off season.

  24. striatic says:

    ha ha ha …

the Yotes broadcast team thinks the fans are doing the wave to help their team get back into it.

rather than from being bored as hell.

    Yakupov!

  28. VanOil says:

I think we can safely assume the Nail Yakupov has above average hand eye coordination.

  65. Smarmy says:

  70. khildahl says:

Earl Hebner came out in stripes for the third tonight. Not that anything other than crappy hockey lost them the game.

  71. OilLeak says:

Whitney!!! Lock that man up!! He’ll secure 1st overall picks for years to come once khabby is gone.

  72. jake70 says:

At least the moment of realization they are out of it comes with only handful of games left, not half the season.

  73. VanOil says:

    Lowetide:

But you don’t get credited with a shot on that net. Damn Statistics.

    hunter1909:
With the team 2-1 down in a must win game, with the goalie pulled and with 17 seconds left in the game…thecaptainshawnhorcoff did what he’s always best at…

Yes, if it’s one thing Horcoff does is take a lot of bad offensive zone penalties.

Also – yes, Dubnyk is totally to blame for that last goal!

People lose their minds when the Oilers lose. There is loads to critique about this game, but Horcoff is not a ==== (as used by Hunter) and that last goal was not Dubnyk’s fault.

  75. hunter1909 says:

The last goal, while frustrating, made no difference in the end result. We were cooked at that point. I don’t think Schultz Old had a good game. There have been a few times recently where I have noticed him for the wrong reasons.

  80. russ99 says:

    Booo!!

Fire Tambellini. Playoffs were within reach had he done his job in July and signed decent players, brought in players midseason when we didn’t have enough centers, and made some moves to fill holes at the deadline.

  81. Lowetide says:

    Michael Parkatti ‏@mparkatti 25s

    EDM takes 3rd 20-16, lose ES Corsi 54-41 overall. Hemsky/Gagner +5, Paajarvi +2, Petry +1. RNH -15, Eberle -13, Hall/Whitney -10.

And with a top five in reach the bonus is it will cost ST a job.

Now that is a stat line you don’t see too often, minus Whitney being Whitney.

  85. hunter1909 says:

    bookje,

Apologies, man. Just a little over-excited at the conclusion of another season of Oilers hockey.

  86. jake70 says:

Well, now when I go to nhl.com and check the standings, I will choose LEAGUE, not conference. When’s the draft?

  87. icecastles says:

Pretty much checked out earlier in the season. got curious when Horcoff came back and they showed some spark, actually got a bit excited when they went on their 5-game streak. Didn’t even bother to watch tonight.

I resented this management team for a while. Now… every time I go back to the well of fandom, it’s a bit closer to dry.

They might be a contender again some day. I honestly doubt it at this point (they’ll eventually be a good team, I don’t see them being a great team), but they might. The problem is by the time it happens, I’m not really going to care anymore. Every year I drift a little further from being able to love this team and like in any relationship, once bitten twice shy. Eventually it’s just too late and even if she becomes your dream girl, your heart just isn’t there anymore. It feels hollow because you’ve given too much and gotten nothing in return.

I’m a rational enough person and have enough other interests that I see no point in continuing to invest time and emotion in something that just leaves me feeling let down and builds me up only to let me down even further.

  90. Ducey says:

Kessy with another goal tonight. Incredible.

  91. hunter1909 says:

Yak was outstanding arguing from the penalty box. Yakupov’s great X 27 grandfather rode in the army of Genghis Khan. That’s a death stare if ever there was one. Yandle’s going to have nightmares for a month.

  92. Captain Obvious says:

    Ducey:
Terrible reffing as usual. Its like the WWF.

Seriously. This is as mad I’ve been watching in a long time. Phoenix is a dirty, crybaby, hockey team that revels in cheapshots and the refs do nothing about it. I think fighting in hockey is stupid, but that’s because I expect the officials to officiate. If they aren’t going to officiate, and if fighting must exist then Brown should be fighting, but not some other goon. He should be trying to put Handzel or Doan in the hospital untouchables style.

  93. crude says:

VanOil: Dudstep. Preferably with this little girl. http://youtu.be/2cXDgFwE13g

What’s funny is I typed “dubstep” but replaced it with techno for LT’s sake. ha.

  94. Clarence Oveur says:

Gents, the Edmonton media sorely needs this man to provide a rant on this organization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htr2UloK-5A. His name is Mike Valenti and he’s a sports “shock jock” of sorts for a radio show out of Detroit.

Part of the problem is that no one in the local MSM is willing to criticize this abortion of a franchise. So much goddamn complacency.

  95. icecastles says:

To clarify, I think the Oilers will get better. Much better. They might become the next Canucks. But I see minimal chance of them becoming Pittsburgh or Chicago and comparisons to the dynasty era are laughable (among other things, it’s almost impossible for any team in the cap era). By the time significant enough changes are made in the front office, it will be too late. They’re already burning off a lot of good cheap years on their stars with nothing to show, and they’re eventually going to lose at least a few of them completely.

I can see Hall demanding a trade. And there aren’t going to be many more J. Schultz windfalls if the team continues on their current course.

  96. bookje says:

    hunter1909,

I’m sure Horcoff forgives you. :)

  97. crude says:

That was my favorite part of the game, and Hall lashing out, that was fun.

  98. bookje says:

    icecastles,

As soon as the Oilers win their first playoff round, you will be dying your hair in team colours and high fiving everyone on Whyte ave.

In fact, its probably the best way to go about it, ignore the team until they are good.

But is is possible for US?

  99. Clay says:

I find that now that the team is (was) actually in contention for a playoff spot, I can’t watch the games.

When they were super horrible and wrapping up 30th place by February, there was actually a lot to watch for. Individual success and growth by young guys mostly, and the outcome of each game was really of no consequence.

Now? Can’t watch. I can’t handle the disappointment. It’s sort of like a flashback to the late 90s and early 00′s, except that when the team just lost out, there was the built-in excuse of not having enough skill due to their low budget.

This time around, it stings 10 fold, because the team is being run by people who, for the most part, can’t see the forest for all the damn trees. It’s criminal.

That said, wtf happened to the top line after the last CGY game? I mean, really, what the fuck? How can three guys go from being absolutely unstoppable, to going a combined 0-0-0 -10 in the last four incredibly important games?

  100. Kitchener says:

    dessert1111: Mac

Those two owe me a lot of Rieder beer.

The season is over, folks. Time to give Dubey a charlie horse and draft top 5. We’re 3 points out of top F’n 5. 3 points! This is our last chance to “draft elite talent,” so they better charlie horse half the team on Sunday morning (after we cream Calgary) and lose every game down the stretch.

“Down with Calgary” > “Draft top 5″

Smyth was standing up during the last time out. Standing up. He knew he wasn’t seeing ice again in the game. Regardless of what his legs are saying, his blood is still copper/blue and his desire is right in the game. He’ll try to be back next year.

  101. icecastles says:

    bookje:

But is is possible for US?

It’s not. And that’s the worst part. I will keep peeking at the games from between my fingers and checking stats 3 times a day. This is what makes me most angry: the goddamn false hope that no matter how logical and rational I am, I seem unable to completely shake.

I hate you Oilers! I love you Oilers! I hate you!

  102. Clarence Oveur says:

    And the song was exciting
    There was a time
    Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
    When hope was high
    And games worth watching
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be less mocking
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams of Cups were made and realized
There was no UFA to be paid
No lottery picks, no player to be despised

But the management come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

I had a dream my team would be
So different from this hell I’m seeing
So different now from what it seemed

Kevin Lowe has killed my dream!

I hate you Oilers! I love you Oilers! I hate you!

I spent a year in rural Africa in 2001 with brief intermittent internet about once every two weeks and no TV. I came home and realized that I missed an entire Oilers season and that I didn’t really miss it at all. I pretty much stopped watching.

    Then came 2006 and I was doomed…

  112. vishcosity says:

Yeah I don’t think I’m buying any tickets this year, and I seem unable to cheer for the DFL hockey anymore. Its like I’m over the whole early pick thing, regardless of potential talent available.

Sure like watching Yakupov, he is so hungry for that puck that I can’t believe it doesn’t wear off on team mates. Like, how can you watch someone be that voracious and not do the same?

If I pay I feel ripped off. While I watch a bad (free) feed, its amazing how much more positive I am. I enjoyed the whole first period and definitely the 5 minutes played with 6 minutes to go.

  113. Lowetide says:

    Cody Nickolet ‏@WHLFromAbove 1m

Oilers prospect Kale Kessy scores the OT winner as the Kamloops Blazers sweep Kelowna with a 4-3 win in Game 4. He now has 11 playoff goals.

I believe I can speak for just about everyone, just how much those heartwarming words mean to us.

Now, Smyth’s coming back, and of course captain Horc’s, then Hemsky’s probably not going to get traded so there’s the old top line, reunited and ready to fly pointlessly up and down the ice, over and over again.

Hell, let’s bring them all back! We’re a dynasty! Kevin Lowe has 6 cup rings!! Lowe for Pope!!

  116. Ducey says:

Captain Happy: That’s quite sad, actually.

How is a guy with 11 goals in 10 games “sad”?

  117. hunter1909 says:

    Next season:

Hall returns 7 pounds heavier and 35 pounds meaner.

RNH returns 7 pounds heavier and ready to rock and roll.

Eberle flies from the first day and every day onward.

Yakupov returns as a 35-45 goal man.

Justin Schultz’s Mom makes sure he returns around 220 pounds.

    Paajarvi scores 15-20 goals, somehow.

Dubnyk continues to play like a basement chesterfield jammed up somewhere.

    Smid will be Smid.

Petry will get his head together this summer, and show up ready to play.

    Ditto Nick Schultz.

    The bad:

Klefbom turns up and either gets hurt or gets injured.

Horcoff returns, as does Hemsky, Smyth, and so many other bad players that the fans write off the team before the season starts; only to be suckered by a 30 game opening stretch where the team wins 20 games in regulation or something.

Team collapse/fight for 8th, like they used to back 8-9 years earlier. Lowe’s mouthpiece Scott Howson announces the rebuild’s been successful. Fans bicker among themselves whether or not Howson’s the right man for the job.

  118. Captain Happy says:

Ducey: How is a guy with 11 goals in 10 games “sad”?

How many junior players have done that.?

    Hundreds?

    Thousands?

Here’s tonight’s final helpful suggestion for the Oilers:

Give Horcoff a new number, like 100. or, 999. Or, 1001. No one could ever diss Horc again, if he had such a groovy jersey number.

  121. VanOil says:

Message to Oilers management: Please, ffs, don’t bring up any AHLers to tantalise everyone with worthless displays of overachieving and unsustainable performance during these final, meaningless games.

  123. hunter1909 says:

    Oilers = Atlanta Falcons.

If people started referring to them as “the Falcons” it would drive Katz insane, in direct proportion to it’s popularity and day to day use.

  124. oilersfan says:

Mark napier was on Gregor yesterday and he talked about how the 1986 flames were built to beat the oilers. They would trap, line up at the blue line to prevent easy zone entry, or at the red line to force ici g. Well 28 years later half the league plays like that. Why cant the kids score? Because after the explosion every team meets for an hour on game day and strategizes on how to neutralize Hall. Stop him and you stop the oilers. Line him up against the canucks , kings, ducks and phoenix, 4 teams who play defense better than bob johnson could have dreamed.

And for the tenth time that eberle contract is a 25% overpay. He is a 60 point player . Those players arent worth more than $ 5 million in the current cap.

C’mon! They’re going to trade Rajala anyway! Let’s see him suit up at least once as an Oiler!

Man, It’s so tough to cheer for these guys when they do so many purely stupid things in the defensive zone every game. Clear walk-ins on the net, lack of coverage on the second guy coming in, breakout passes to no one, trying to carry it out at a snails pace, and on it goes. So frustrating. They’re doing it to themselves!

Part of the problem is that no one in the local MSM is willing to criticize this abortion of a franchise. So much goddamn complacency.

Well, it looks like Brownlee is going to get his media credentials yanked by the Oilers PR crew.

Just a thought: Perhaps Daryl Katz should consider handing out pink slips to his management team instead of contract extensions.

@TrendsmapCanada Terrific. Any chance the sentiment being expressed is trending with Oiler ownership? I’m guessing not.

I said it before about Steve Kelly. He was drafted on the strength of his playoff numbers during his draft year. I remember Barry Fraser raving about his playoff season that year. He had 16 pts in 15 games. The next year he followed it up with 31 pts in 18 games.

Kinda like Jerred Smithson’s awesome playoff faceoff percentage that Tambellini threw out during his trade deadline presser.

They need a coach, there is a good one down in Oklahoma luckily.

They just need a coach and A GM. The worst coach I ever seen I can’t watch any of his interviews. Its funny because good teams change over their roster even during their winning years, but Tambelini is pretty much standing pat the last two years, no trades at either deadline of significance when marginal and depth players actually have value. Then they actually resign guys like Hordichuk…unbelievable. Then on top of that after no moves all year to plug holes in their roster. They trade a pick and add a UFA 15th forward to their depth when they were clearly not making the playoffs as of the deadline.

  133. Ducey says:

    BONVIE,

Just because Brownlee happens to be saying something you agree with doesn’t make him “the man”. He is the L. Petrell of journalists. No insight. Just the obvious – usually written in a negative tone. Nothing that some kid couldn’t write for his highschool paper. 80% of the posters here are better writers than him. 90% have more useful insight.

Captain Happy: How many junior players have done that.?

How many junior players have put up 75 pt seasons in their draft year? Thousands? I guess its pretty sad that McKinnon did that this year.

I am not saying that Kessy is Nathan Mckinnon. Just that its good news that an Oilers prospect is producing. Is he going to keep it up. No. Does it mean he might turn into a useful NHL player? Well, he now has a better chance than before. A tough guy who can score is the great white whale in this league and if nothing else his trade value just went up.

I imagine had he been Canucks or Wild property, certain not so happy people would be using him to criticise Oiler managment.

  135. danny says:

Does anyone think starting a Kickstarter funded project to purchase a full page ad in an Edmonton tabloid, and create an open letter to Katz. The contents of the letter would probably be determined by committee, but i suspect that it would be asking to be heard, and direct him/media to a supporting website, chronicling a handful of well-spoken and logical/statistical findings from respected sources in the Oiler community.

I’d be on board with doing a large share of the work, if I get the sense that people think its a worthwhile endeavour,

For anyone unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a crowdsourcing platform where you state the project parameters, and a goal amount. People that want to partake in the funding of your project make donations.

Interested in peoples thoughts. I’d imagine an ad buy like that could cost a fair amount, but kickstarter is pretty impressive for these things.

Using twitter, facebook, HFboards, blogs etc, it would reach a large audience fairly quickly. I think the MSM would cover it as it progresses too. It’s an interesting way to vent some of our frustrations at the very least.
