    DBO:
Stupid Tencer interrupted the question, but I think Rishaug asked what kind of power Tambellini actually had. Lowe saying he had full control. Although he does say he asked Tambellini to do some things he didn’t want to do, but he is only the conduit to the owner.

Blames Katz now as well as Tambellini? Maybe this presser is the beginning of the end for him. That wasn’t smart. He is loosing his stuff badly in this one.

I want to look Kevin Lowestraight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no good, rotten, floor-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d*ckless, hopeless, heartless, fat-*ss, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed, sack of monkey sh*t he is! Hallelujah! Holly Sh*t! Where’s the Tylenol?”

I don’t think you would have wanted to go into the corners with Kevin Lowe in the eighties.

Yep…he’s become Bob Pulford, but both Lowe and Pulford were damn good hockey players, and good coaches and GM’s before burning out and becoming grumpy old men.

Judge a person by the full arc of their life.

This is Lowe’s last hurrah. He knows it. MacT knows it is his own too. They aren’t quitters. They both could have ridden off into the sunset.

There still is a hockey man in Lowe. But he was a competitive bad ass, and still is. Part of MacT’s job is to extract the good, and eliminate the bad. Tambellini was not able to do that. MacT will have a much better chance.

  3. Scotty LaDouche says:

Stauffer says Lowe is here until Lowe tells him its time to go.

  4. asiaoil says:

Four coaches and two GMs have been fired on Lowe’s pathetic watch over the Oilers (I count him being booted upstair as being fired). This is his last chance because there is nowhere else to hide and no other chumps willing to be his fall guys. Let’s say MacT and Howson actually do a pretty good job this summer – but if our goaltending sucks or we get some key injuries next season – we could be in the lottery again. I actually hope it happens because that would be the end of Lowe’s reign of error.

Honestly – it’s not Edmonton that’s the problem with UFA’s – it’s Kevin Lowe and his band of pathetic hangers on that are only there to make him feel better. The big tell will be if they don’t go jihad on the pro scouting team and force Kruger to keep Smith and Bucky. If those two areas don’t change this summer then we will all be here again next year – except this time I’ll be celebrating Lowe’s firing instead of feeling nauseous watching his arrogant sideshow at the PC.

  5. Bar_Qu says:

The venom to Howson is unjustified. I am fully aware of the “old boys club” label, and can understand it too, but the last time the Oilers went outside the org they got Tambellini – who was either incompetent or unwilling to stand up to a guy who pulled his strings. It is not like they got an unqualified bumpkin to take over.

Howson did a good to great job in his assistant GM role here before, and did a reasonably good job as GM for the CBJs. That he failed at that job and was fairly fired does not make him useless for the job he did before. I like him for identifying talent at the pro and amateur-level. I think he will bring value as a guy who has gained perspective from his time in the CBJ org’n – notably on how not to build a good team and what can be done to avoid selling your future for magic beans. Again, I get the angst over his place in the org, but better him than someone less qualified or more talentless.

i stand by what I said of MacTGM (MTGM): he needs to make the right moves to surround the top players with strong vet presence and support players. He said the right things in that regard in his presser, but I withold judgement until he actually does it.

Some of you are treating this like a twitter forum – express the strongest emotion immediately, avoid using measured/balanced language and include some curse words to emphasise your displeasure. Again, I get the emotion, but I don’t think today is the day to pass judgement on what has happened. No time for thought yet.

  6. FastOil says:

So, my contribution is to my cable package extras and a few slices of pizza a year. I pay for 1/5th of Ryan Jones’ skate lacing time for one game.

And you still overpayed based on value received

  8. Bag of Pucks says:

Did anyone catch the part in the presser where MacT mentioned Lucic by name and then Lowe said “I don’t think you can say his name” ya know, cos it’s tampering, and then MacT immediately recognized the gaffe?

Was almost comical to hear MacT expound so passionately about how much the game has changed since they played. I guess the positive is they’re learning some lessons from getting schooled by the rest of the league.

If the NJ Devils were a Mickey Mouse org before Lou, what are the Oilers at this point? Effing Goofy!

It’s somewhat understandable the arrogance these guys have from winning all those Cups at such a young age but it really is distasteful to see it on such obvious display. I suspect a little humility would go a long way with this ‘management team’ Today, Lowe reminded me of every insufferable prick boss I’d ever had rolled into one. He seems a long way removed from the ‘Slats’ father figure that mentored that young team so effectively – so long ago.

Oilers press conference making news ….

Winnipeg media can’t figure out why Lowe and Mac T are espousing very different things….. Lowe: Patience / Mact T – Urgency

K.Lowe – we know how to win 80′s success / Mact T – game has changed.

Two very different thoughts from each person.( Hockey News – if you are a player and you just witnessed that – you want to have a meeting with management -very confusing )

Hockey News reporter Adam P. – Kevin Lowe talking about the 80′s? How many cups he has won?

Everyone commenting on the reaction Lowe gave to ‘fair’ questions….

I have yet to see the PC – but hearing what 3rd party reporters are saying – Kevin Lowe embarrassed the organization today.

  12. Magnus says:

    A few thoughts :

If Lowe actually said about 2 types of fan, then I’m pretty much done with him. That’s incredibly stupid for anyone with a public business to say. Never thought he wall hat big a schmuck.

With Tambo gone, we can kiss 1st overall goodbye. I’m gonna miss that creepy smile pic of his.

MacT is only holding down the position until 2020 when the management team will consist of Bucky as GM, Joey Moss as assistant GM and Lowe’s floating head in a jar still overseeing it alla la Futurama.

Someone should call in and ask Stauffer how it feels to be a man whore.

    Long live the nepotism.

If that’s what it takes to embarrass the organization, I can’t help but think about how he’s managed the whole. Freaking. Thing. for the last 15 years. His message hasn’t changed, and asside from one magical year when a top 10 player landed in his lap, neither has his results.

Only thing bigger than his balls for saying it is his ego for believing what he said.

The guy may have been a great player, and may have made a hell of a trade to build the 05-06 run, but other than that he’s been shit.

I get the feeling that Kevin Lowe is really, really angry right now about how Tambellini created this whole fucking mess that made him look bad in this press conference.

  22. Racki says:

FYI, just because people are jumping all over it, the actual comment was:

“We have two types of fans – we have paying customers, and we have people watching the game that we still care about, but.. certainly the people that go to the games or support, we spend a lot of time talking to them, delivering our message.”

Now it wasn’t something I would have thrown out there, but it’s not as bad as “fuck you non paying fans!” that is being read into by may people. Just saying.

He didn’t say good stuff today though, and I already thought he should be gone.. but I think people are really picking things apart. I wasn’t sure but he might have also implied that the “those watching the game” type of fans were the media. Could be wrong.. but it made sense coming off of a pretty venomous question from MacKinnon. At any rate, I didn’t think it was a good thing to say, but he wasn’t saying that non-paying fans can go eff themselves or are unimportant.

    Flame on…

All bets are off for the roster now.

Listening to him speak today, I get the feeling that MacT already knows who he is going to trade, and he repeated the words bold, risk, and difficult decision.

I’d say we now need to add MPS, Eberle, and definitely Yakupov to the names Gagner and Hemsky as “on the block.”

My gut says Yak City is leaving town this summer. Hope I’m wrong.

  29. Racki says:

My gut says Yak City is leaving town this summer.Hope I’m wrong.

It’s possible, but I don’t think that’s what he was saying, nor do I think it will happen. I think the Oilers could be aggressive / “bold” by moving their 1st rounder (if they wanted.. but logic says draft one of the big C’s available)… they could trade Gagner (which some might see as bold), Hemsky, maybe some of their prospects… or he could have meant “bold” as in dismantling our entire supporting cast (Smyth, Horcoff, Jones, Petrell, etc..) and rebuilding it. Hard to say.

At any rate, I think Yak is safe… unless we are after a REAL key name.. such as a player with size and skill and is the right age.

Since you volunteered this, is it okay if I make repeated references to it everytime you say anything, to the point that it starts to define your persona around here?

Because seriously, that was about the best entrance to this thread you could have made.

(But what the hell timezone are you in?)

  34. asiaoil says:

Yak, MSP, Hall and RNH are the core at forward – you need two more big bodies – but not Lucic who would be over-priced and ineffective. Gagner, Hemmer and yes Eberle are trading chips. Eberle’s contract could go out for a big money top pair dman. Harti is the only guy in the bottom 6 worth worrying about and Horcoff can stay for one more year as long as we have a compliance buyout in hand. Smyth is a 4th liner, Belanger and Brown are extra forwards

Schulz jr, Smid, Petry and Schulz sr can stay on defense – we need all the decent players we can get. Add Kbomb and a legit top pair guy. Potter or Fistric as 7-8 guys

DD did a fine job this year so you just need to add a good backup.

    So we need:

2 big top 6 forwards (#2 center and #2 RW).

    1 LH top 4 dman

    1 big 4th line center

    2 big 3rd/4th line RW

    1 backup goaler

    Hall RNH Yak
    MSP xxx xxx
    Harti Horcoff xxx
    Smyth xxx xxx
    Belanger/Brown

    Smid Schulz jr
    xxx Petry
    Schulz sr Kbomb
    Potter/Fistric

    DD/xxx

Trade Bait: Eberle, Gagner, Hemmer, #1 pick, both #2 picks. I deal the #1 pick to Philly for Coutourier in a second if that deal is there. He solves many problems, can play right away, and let’s us use Eberle/Gags/Hemmer to fill holes on D and RW.

  35. oilersfan says:

asia oil, I wouldn’t trade this year;s first for Coururier at all. The Oilers could get Barkov or more likely Monahan. Both have his size and defensive chops but a much higher upside. Think Staal or Kopitar.

  36. oilersfan says:

I would trade either of the seconds and every first and second from 2014 -2020 to get the other players needed, though.

  37. BlueNoteNorth says:

I will believe MacT for what he says if:

“Take on some semblance of risk? Bold things? Explore different things?”
    • Trade Gagner

“Make the tough decisions? Do the difficult things?”
    • Buy out Smyth
    • Trade Hemsky

“Greater depth? Competitiveness? Support for our young core?”
    • Buy out Belanger
    • Replace Jones, Petrell, Smithson, Khabibulin, Whitney, Fistric, Potter

    MacT: I have an MBA.

MSM: Oh sorry, we’ll speak more slowly.

  38. B S says:

    asiaoil,

Please don’t trade Ebs. I don’t see Edmonton winning that trade. You won’t find anyone better to replace him with and when (if?) this team is finally competing his contract will be a steal. Coincidentally those holes on RW you mention could be filled by Eberle and Hemsky, just sayin’.

Every player is tradeable for the right price, but I just don’t see a scenario where Ebs nets you a stud #1 D-man, and anything less would be giving him away or taking someone else’s garbage contract. This has become one of those absurd quirks Oilers fans have developed this season in an effort to second guess the GM and figure out how to build a contender. like trading for Penner. The two big knocks on his tenure in Edmonton were that he plays soft (and he does except in the playoffs) and that he was aggravatingly inconsistent, the two problems with the current roster. The second half of this season MPS has been a faster, tougher player than Penner ever was in Edmonton.

  39. icecastles says:

Rondo: Who cares having an MBA does not mean much, maybe you are good a memorizing .

Oilers should now go all in with the ‘Old Boy’ revolution this summer:

    1) Send Yakupov to a one week golf academy to help his acculturation. He stays with Gretzky and they discuss being where the puck is going to go.

    2) Send Hall to be a guest at Messiers hotel. He spends his evenings talking about being a captain and sleeping with Madonna with the proprietor.

    3) Send Schultz Jr to play ball hockey with Coffey. He seems to have lost his love of the game playing with plumbers.

    4) Send Nuge to Dr. Randy Gregg. Afterwards Adam Lamb for workouts.

    5) Send Paajarvi and Hartakeinin to a remote northern cabin in Finland. They spend there days doing upper body work outs in the woods. There nights drinking copious amounts of Vodka while attending Esa Tikkanen’s famous finishing school Charm and Etiquette for Nordic Hockey players.

    6) Send Eberle to the Turks and Cacos to play ball hockey with Anderson. They can discuss being great on a team that has players that are greater.

    7) Send Hemsky to Sather. Tell Sather to send back a damn good top 4 defender.

    8) Send Smyth on a twelve month round the world cruise. Where he finds Smyth, beloved and retired Oilers great.

Magic beans versus a known quantity. You can probably extend Coutourier at a good rate this season and his game/size is a perfect fit for this team. Then we need value big guys for the 2nd line. We can’t keep stockpiling high draft picks who will command big salaries in year 4 – the cap will not allow this. That’s what we have to trade Gags and Eberle right now. We have to fill holes and these guys have redundant skills on our roster (small skill players). You can’t fall in love with players and Gags, Hemmer and Eberle are too much of a good thing. Which top 6 would you prefer:

    #1
    Hall RNH Eberle
    MSP Gags Yak

    or

    #2
    Hall RNH Yak
    MSP Coutourier Brower (or similar)

#1 is soft, young and skilled – while #2 has way more ability to play a tough 2 way game while still possessing a ton of skill. That Eberle contract is a killer as well now that we have YAK who will be a superior player.

  47. alice13 says:

Has anyone considered that Lowe’s defensive and ill-considered reaction to the questions might be less about his arrogance and have much more to do with the likely fact that he was answering exactly the same questions 24hrs previously in Katz’s office? He was embarrassed to be asked publicly what Katz had already grilled him over privately, and perhaps that’s where the strange answers (paying customers) came from – under the pressure he fell back on the sort of answers he gave Katz.

I would hope the lashing out was not arrogance but the fear of a man on the hot seat.

  48. CrazyCoach says:

godot10: I don’t think you would have wanted to go into the corners with Kevin Lowe in the eighties.

Yeah, but that was thirty years ago, and I’m willing to be dollars to doughnuts that if I have KLowe’s Rolodex or Google Contacts list at my disposal, along with a whole business operation working for me, that I could certainly build a team that is better than this group.

If you think that tenacity, toughness, and competitiveness are the sole domain of NHL GM’s than you obviously haven’t been in a room with Bill Gates when his minions inform him that once again, Apple is taking a fair share of the market.

  49. G Money says:

I’m surprised at the naivete of those who are shocked/surprised/offended that Tambo was fired and Lowe is still around.

    This is how corporations work.

First the staff (in hockey terms, the players) get the blame, and they get reassigned, demoted, or changed.

If that doesn’t work, the managers (in hockey terms, the coach) get blamed, and they get replaced, sometimes by new people (Quinn), sometimes by promotion (Renney, Krueger).

If that doesn’t work, the VP (in hockey terms, the GM) gets replaced, sometimes by new people, sometimes by promotion, or more correctly in this case, rehire and promote (MacT).

And last, if that doesn’t work, the board (in hockey terms the owner, Katz) replaces the CEO (in hockey terms the EVP i.e. Lowe).

Each level of change of course usually ALSO cascades down the line in both corporations and hockey teams. So a new VP (GM) often means the existing managers (coach) must fear for his/her job too.

MacT is now the third level up the corporate chain of failure. He may or may not keep Krueger. If he doesn’t turn the ship around in, say, two years, then and only then will Lowe be on the firing line.

Welcome to corporate life – sh*t flows downhill.

I like all of the Oilers top 6 as players individually, yet at some point they will have to decide which of the guys that don’t drive play, can’t play in the corners or in traffic are going. I agree that the D being so weak makes things worse for the forwards but some are still effective.

The ones that only shine when given time and space are killing the team. The team won’t get better at keeping the puck in without players that are able to do it game in and out no matter what the opposition does.

They are getting man handled in reg season games if the other team tries at all. Imagine playoffs.

  53. FastOil says:

From the presser it wouldn’t make sense given he’s the other skill winger that is feisty and Hall mentioned as similar to himself in style. Won’t need a babysitter or someone to do all the work so he can score.

The only thing is the crazy. He’s pretty wild and might be a concern reigning him in to team system play.

I agree it would be stupid. He has game breaker written all over him and likely will be ahead of Gagner, Hemsky and Eberle sooner rather than later, which is logical because he was a first and the others not.

  54. fuzzy muppet says:
